  • Was Sato (from Karate Kid Part II) an overrated fighter and a fake karate master? Ken reassesses Sato's No. 1 ranking after carefully reviewing new evidence. We never see Sato fight, Mr. Miyagi laughs at the thought of fighting Sato, Sato's dojo poster contains falsehoods, Sato's karate students are really bad, and Miyagi says Daniel LaRusso could block Sato's punch. Ken then elevates Terry Silver to No. 1 sensei villain fighter and places Sato below John Kreese. This video is sponsored by Dyantox.
Is Terry Silver connected to Tom Cole/Ken Cole? Check out COBRA COLE featuring David Shatraw here: • Cobra Cole - Cobra Kai...
Sato Toguchi (played by Danny Kamekona in Karate Kid Part II) was Mr. Miyagi's (played by Pat Morita) best friend before Miyagi stole his fiance and Sato challenged him to a death match. Miyagi fled Okinawa but Sato still wanted revenge. Sato trained his nephew Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) who eventually challenge dDaniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) to a deathmatch.

I already made a very lengthy comment in your first rankings video, and I put Sato in "theoretical" first place, and I put Silver first for skills we actually seen. Many of the reasons I stated in that comment were addressed here in this video, so no need for me to address them again.
Here are a few points to "defend" Sato...
    1. Miyagi handled Sato's aggression pretty much the same as he handled everybody else who challenged him. It was a Miyagi character trait. Avoid the fight... Show no fear... Let them attack first...etc.
    2. The quiet, mysterious ones are often the biggest threat. You just NEVER know what skills they might be packing... I am giving Sato the benefit if the doubt that he might have pulled some kind of weapon on Miyagi.
    3. Miyagi Making his last will and testament and giving them to Daniel? Just a precaution. Miyagi knew SOMEBODY had to lose, and did not want to risk death without his affairs being in order. You could say he knew that ANYBODY can get in a "lucky" shot.
    4. How would Miyagi have known what other skills Sato may have picked up after Miyagi left, or Sato knowing what Miyagi learned for that matter. Sato likely continued training under Miyagi's father, while Miyagi had to find his own path. Sato DID give clues of his skills, such as the beam of wood, but nothing conclusive. Breaking a beam is different from breaking a body, after all.

My theory on Sato is that he was formidable (though still far below Miyagi's level) in his prime, but that by the time we see him in Karate Kid II, he's developed a severe case of arthritis and some other health issues, and can no longer do very much physically. He thus bases his reputation on past accomplishments, some of them real, some exaggerated.

I disagree. Sato may have been less talented than Miyagi, but he was still better than Silver. He taught for 40 years, in the time of the 2nd movie. Let's say he started at 10, 40 years means he's 50. Terry was younger. Terry started to learn martial arts, only when he was in the military, which means Sato had more experience than Terry. I don't think that in Okinawa, where they take martial arts very seriously, you can be a fake black belt, they would not allow it to happen. Sato was probably 1st Dan in Goju-Ryu, so I anyone ask he can show a certificate. Also Chozen is very skillful, who taught him how to be skillful? That's right- Sato. Sorry my friend, that's my counter points to your points, but I can't say the points are not good. Very interesting video.

This theory dies with Chozen, Chozen skills are too great, it could only mean that Chozen had a good Sensei, and you can't just teach Chozen his skills with just knowledge, you must also be good at Karate, and this video is clearly a joke, Mr Miyagi just wanted to teach Daniel estate planning? it was nice at the start but the longer it went, it just sounded more absurd. This video or (ABUSRD) theory is clearly the case of recency bias.

Sato is ment to be as strong or almost as strong as miyagi. That is what story tells.

Sato wasn't trying to break the beam. The beam is locked into the pillars and is used as a striking post to increase bone density, toughen the hands and condition yourself to the endure the pain of repeated impacts. It's one of many hand conditioning exercises found in traditional Karate. Some Karate schools even practice this by striking their hands and arms against the support beams that brace the ceiling. It's no different that striking makiwara to condition the hands and arms. My experience? 30 years in martial arts, 5 black belts and I own a martial arts studio. No, Sato isn't bad at Karate.

Ken, you're so talented at making videos like these. I love the way you notice details which other people don't, and add them up to create your own theories. You do that so well - regardless if I agree or disagree with your overall point in the end.
And in this case, I would disagree. First, I think Miyagi-Do Karate at it's best is clearly more powerful than Cobra Kai at it's best. And I think that as Sato and Miyagi learned as kids together, Miyagi was only slightly better (hence, he could break the log, which Sato could not). But with a little luck going the wrong way, Sato could have beaten Miyagi. And Miyagi realized this. That's why Miyagi left for the USA (he knew either one could die - and wished that upon neither), and why he was preparing for the possibility of death after he finally agreed to fight Sato.
If Sato ever fought Silver (in a fair fight), then I doubt it would have looked very different than when Miyagi fought Silver.

Really interesting perspective. Personally if we went with this theory I would suggest that Miyagi wrote his will in the expectation that Sato may fight dirty; whilst honour is a huge thing, you’ve rightly pointed out that Sato let Chozen do a lot of the damage with his cronies and may well have expected them to step in if things weren’t going his way. I’m still leaning towards Sato being good at karate, and I’m not sure he’d have been practicing still in private if he wasn’t any good, but it would have been nice to see some karate from him. This video has given me a lot to think about (as most of your videos do). Keep up the great work

    • @Zurround

I think the will was a "probability scale" decision. If you have 2 perfectly even matched fighters its 50/50. If one is a little better than the other it might be 52 to 48. In a fight to the death a loss is almost certainly death. The only way Sato could win and NOT kill Miyagi (I doubt he would have shown mercy) would be if the fight ran on for so long and he took so much damage that by the time he wins he is too exhausted to finish Miyagi.
So for example if its 90,10 in favor of Miyagi that is a pretty big advantage but it also means he has a 1 in ten chance of losing = death. Even if its 95, 5 in Miyagi's favor he has a 1 in 20 chance of death. Even if the odds are in his favor the chance of losing would still be enough to have a will made out just in case. Against Kreese and Silver and Barnes there is no need, its probably on a par with the chance of getting killed in a car accident taking one trip on a country road during nice weather.

You might be right. I think the reason Sato has been talked about reverently until now is because he taught Chozen, who at this point is probably the best all-around fighter. Sato might have known the Miyagi-do techniques very well and could teach them decently enough but just couldn't apply them himself nearly as well as Miyagi in actual combat. So he passed the techniques on to Chozen, who like you said is more naturally gifted, and Chozen in a way just kind of "took the ball and ran with it" to be better than his uncle at karate.
While Sato may not have been the greatest at karate I have a feeling his business success might come into play in season 5. Hopefully he also taught Chozen everything he knew about business because that could be what gives them a chance against Silver and his seemingly unlimited resources.

Perhaps the REAL reason we never see Sato fight is simply because Danny Kamekona is not a martial artist and seeing his character fight was not necessary to the story. As far as the "character" not being a good martial artist, I think his reputation would have long since spiraled downward if this had been the case. Also, I would have serious doubts as to his ability to teach martial arts to both the military and to his very own nephew if his own skills were lackluster. Finally, when Daniel asks Miyagi if Sato was any good, Miyagi does not say anything to the contrary.

Awesome video! You got me to laugh out loud! In all seriousness there were some legit points brought up. I find it hard to believe Miyagi and his father wouldn't have been able to train Sato into being a decent fighter with years of training, but could train Daniel to win a tournament against far more experienced fighters in a couple weeks. Miyagi completely outclassed Terry and given the evidence I think it's clear he outclassed Sato. Now I will say this. Sato who knows Miyagi well had confidence he could win despite knowing and I'm assuming sparred against him often. Maybe he was delusional, but you wouldn't think he would be so adamant for years that he could win. I think Miyagi saying Daniel could block Sato's punch was more of him criticizing Sato for attempting such an obvious and straightforward attack. I think its likely Sato's anger made him a worse fighter since Miyagi-do is all about defense. I think Sato crushes Krease. Honestly, I think him and Terry are in the same tier. I'll give the slight edge to Sato. I think Chozen vs Terry in season 5 is pretty close to how it would have gone down between Sato and Silver.

Sato is no coward either and is obviously prepared to fight Miyagi to the death, a step I don't think Silver would be prepared to take if he thought he might lose.
I think what makes Terry Silver the most dangerous villain in the Karate Kid universe is not his fighting skill (though this is formidable), it's his manipulative skills and resources. I think Rambo once said 'I've always believed that the mind is the best weapon', and Terry Silver knows this to be true too.
Mark my words, Silver is going wage a psychological war against Daniel and Chozen once he realises he can't win a physical confrontation. If Chozen has one weakness it's going to be his code of honour, and if anyone can exploit this it's Terry Silver.

I had initially figured Miyagi saying even Daniel could block Sato's punch was about that specific punch and how telegraphed it was.
Though, Sato being a capable teacher, but bad at the actual application of Karate is an interesting idea.

Ok, I'll admit that a lot of what you say makes sense. I myself have always noted the almost identical dimensions of the Satos beam of wood and the one that Mr Myagi breaks.
But, if Sato really does suck as much as you say, then how could Chozen have gotten as good as he is without Satos help, and still respect Sato as much as he does?

Maybe because Sato knew the techniques and despite not being able to perform as well, he could teach a talented young fighter, who respects him because he helped him during his depression.

It makes to sense to say that Sato was bad at Karate while at the same time being able to instruct Chozen, who was actually very good at it. Where did Chozen get his skills from? He got them from Sato. Perhaps Miyagi was better at Karate than Sato, just like he was better than Kreese and everybody else in the franchise, but that doesn't make Sato bad at Karate. It just doesn't make sense.

8:02 Yes Daniel-san could have blocked it since "master" Sato telegraphed it from a mile away.
Johnny was a much better fighter and Daniel blocked most of Johnny's punches with his face.
    Sato ran a McDojo
