John Kreese appeared in Karate Kid parts I, II and III. He was a Vietnam veteran and US Army Karate Champion from 1970 through 1972. He ran a successful Cobra Kai dojo before being embarrassed by Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi. Sato was Miyagi's former best friend and learned karate from Miyagi's father. He became a business mogul and a Master karate teacher of US military in Okinawa. Terry Silver is John Kreese's best friends and fellow Cobra Kai master. He got revenge for Kreese by tormenting Daniel and Miyagi.
This analysis goes over each sensei's fighting skills in detail, and examines their background and how they did against Mr. Miyagi.

I think Sato is overhyped, but I still agree with your rankings. Watching the Karate Kid part 2 more recently, I feel like I picked up on cues that suggested Miyagi was another level above Sato -which Miyagi knew and Sato may have been realizing again throughout the film. I think Sato may have assumed that Miyagi would have abandoned karate along with Okinawa. Though events started underlining the fact that he didn't leave because he was afraid of Sato. If you watch the movie again, pay attention to the moments he has around Miyagi. You can see his confidence begin to break down, but he holds strong to his code. When Sato sees Miyagi break that huge wooden beam on top of him, not only did he realize he saved his life, it confirmed to him, straight up, that Miyagi was on a whole other level. Also... on a side note, I don't think Sato was trying to break that driftwood, it was set up for conditioning his hand. I mean, It was encased in cement legs. Too much trouble to go through for something you're going to break.
Despite the above, I do think Sato had enough in his bag to take Terry Silver.
Even though Kreese was a champion and had a head start on training over Silver. It seems clear that Silver surpassed him. Part of it could be due to Silver's superior athleticism, but I think his money may have given him more time to train and better quality to train with. I kind of wish they would have stayed with the direction I thought they went with in Karate Kid 3 regarding their history. I was under the impression that Kreese was an older captain who saved Silver under his command a number of times. I think it would have been easier to restore Silver in Cobra Kai if they'd played it like this. I think its going to be hard to buy that they are or are close the same age. The actors obviously have more years between them. Keeping Silver a bit younger would have made him seem more dangerous as Kreese is well past his prime in Cobra Kai.
I actually think you could make an argument that Mike Barnes could have taken Kreese in part 3. As far as Daniel's opponents were concerned, he had national recognition and dominated Daniel like no other character. I would expect his fighting level to be closer to Kreese and Silver's than Daniel's -and again, I think you could argue that he could beat Kreese in a fight... at least during the timeframe of Karate Kid 3. If Barnes shows up in Cobra Kai, with the head start in ability he had in part 3 and the fact he is younger than the old senseis, I'd expect him to be the most dangerous fighter.
I'd still put Kreese above the Colonel due to the fact that his background seemed more impressive and the Cobra Kai students seemed like they were better fighters than Dugan's alphas. I will add that I think Julie would have won the all valley tournament against Daniel and Johnny, though I'd be iffy about her being able to take Barnes.

1. No to Julie being able to beat the TOP TIER male characters. The guy she beat up at the end of her movie was totally inferior to Johnny, Chozen, Barnes, and any version of Daniel by the end of KK1 on. However, Julie could beat MOST of the male teen characters just not the "top tier" ones (like Robbie and Miguel). And she was absolutely the best FEMALE fighter in the franchise. Tory and Samantha and Aisha would stand no good chance against a 17 year old version of her.
2. 17 year old Mike Barnes could not have won a fight against Kreese due to the extreme difference in age and experience and Kreese's greater size and strength BUT he might have been able to do a little damage maybe bruise Kreese before getting the crap beaten out of him BUT he had way more POTENTIAL AND NATURAL ABILITY, HE WAS A PRODIGY so with just a few more years of training he would totally evolve past Kreese and Silver. I could see him beating up Kreese or Silver with just 4 more years of training after KK3 (he would be 21) but putting up a damned good fight against them but probably still lose with 2 or 3 more years of training.
3. Being by far the most inferior of the adult senseis I could see either Mike Barnes or Daniel beating Colonel Dugan if its 18 year old versions of them, one year beyond KK3.
4. On the topic of Kreese being "past his prime" he was actually past his prime in the KK movies. The actor (and I think the character too) was in his mid 40s then (late 70s now). Not OLD like now but the character's "prime" is early 1970s but KK takes place in mid 1980s.
5. Silver being so much inferior to Kreese in size and strength could be chalked up to his youth. He looked like some barely over 18 kid and men need to be in their mid 20s between 23 and 25 to achieve maximum physical strength. I think Kreese was a few years older. By KK3 Kreese lost that advantage.
@@Zurround Regarding Julie's opponent: It is true that he was far inferior to Johnny, Chosen and Barnes, but she had already received what I perceived as years of training prior to meeting Miyagi. She also had natural instincts and athleticism that impressed Miyagi. So I'd say she at least had quite a head start over Daniel from when he met Miyagi. Now we could argue about how these things might play out in real life... with size/strength (look at Miyagi's success as a little old man in the franchise). In the Karate Kid universe, I think it is implied that she was of greater talent, experience and agility than Daniel was. I think Johnny was a talent as well and may have gotten caught off guard by Daniel -losing the early points, but Daniel of course may have been the smarter fighter at the time as well. I'm open to either interpretation.
Regarding Mike Barnes vs Kreese: Seeing the way he fought in those movies brings the argument that Mike Barnes might be able to take Kreese. Though I'd agree with you in the sense that it would probably not be written that way. Probably more of a fighting choreography issue than a script issue. I will add that Barnes did last longer against Miyagi in one of the two fights he had against him. More of a discussion point than a point I really believe. I'm sure the writers probably would have put Kreese over Barnes.
Kreese seemed like at least a decade older than Silver in Karate Kid 3. This still makes sense with Kreese being his captain. It will be interesting to see what's up with Silver in Cobra Kai. Lots of crazy canvas to work with there.
@@rickscott8756 Silver was 40 years old in KK3 based on the OFFICIAL MOVIE NOVELIZATION. The novel said "about 40 so it could be 39 or 41 I guess. The complaints I read about a 28 year old actor portraying a 40 year old character are ANNOYING. Of course someone doing A LOT of martial arts training and due to being very rich getting the absolute best nutrition, exercise help and medical care and NOT having a lot of the stresses that wear poor people out is going to AGE BETTER so its not that much of a stretch. Its like they a 23 year old actor is portraying someone who is 106. its not a HUGE stretch. For all we knew the character had no gray hear only because he DYED IT and at 40 grey first appears in the beard then the head later and he had a shaved face. Not unrealistic at all. I saw Next Karate kid and read the novel in 1994 and my memory is sketchy so I don't know what her training history was. It bothered me that her opponent never got any hits in on her just a SHOVE. The writers obviously were not comfortable with a man (or boy) hitting a WOMAN (or girl) but I never find it interesting if the hero in a martial arts movie wins TOO EASILY. He should have at least given her a bloody nose, a black eye and maybe some bruises before losing to her. Do you agree that she should return as a FEMALE SENSEI? Call me sexist all you want but it bothers me that the number of FEMALE SENSEIS in this franchise is still ZERO going all the way back to 1984.
@@rickscott8756 I admit the ACTOR was a wimp but story continuity gives Daniel the win over Julie. He beat Johnny, Chozen AND Mike Barnes and that is one hell of a "resume" for lack of a better term. Julie is not beating them. Beating those 3 teen "powerhouses" gives Daniel fighting superiority over her plot wise. Granted he had 3 movies to develop and show his accomplishments and Julie only got ONE movie so its kind of an unfair comparison. I would love it if the KK universe expanded with BOOKS NOVELS like Star Wars and Star Trek because then she could get a sequel in BOOK FORM.
One thing is for certain: Sato is the smartest evil sensei. He was the one who backed down from fighting Miyagi.

@Every Little Thing Just because they were trained by the same person doesn't mean the same skill level. Look at Terry Silver and John Kreese. Trained by the same person yet Terry is ahead by a lot.
I think Miyagi knew he would beat him, and did not want to let him lose face. Due to him still feeling he was his friend. Remember in matric, tripped my friend like he did me 5 minutes ago and he then went into full attack mode. I just easily blocked everything he had, and then grabbed his hands and told him I am his friend. I do not want to fight him. It was just playing. He bent my thumb which at that moment felt like nothing. Had the doctor check it... hairline fracture. The next day he bragged when he saw my thumb to the other people, which I replied in front of everybody, it was because he was my friend and I tried to stop him fighting. He went all red in the face and never brought it up again.

But if they were to fight it would definitely be close unlike with the other fighters who couldnt land a hit on him sato would hurt miyiagi a lot even if he lost by the end

At the time Sato would've had almost 50 years of experience, personally taught U.S. Marines, trained more intensive and regularly than Miyagi did, still practices the traditional Okinawan way and is not afraid to fight to the death. If Miyagi was able to beat them so easily, Sato would've straight up murdered them.
Mayagi trained all the time. Kata, meditation, he turned maintenance like paint the fence into karate practice
But Miyagi was way wiser. More calm and focused.
Miyagi whooped Kreese (twice!) and Silver--in their dojo! I have no doubt Sato could beat the stuffing out of Silver in a NY minute.

@Mike H Part of why Miyagi took as long as he did was because he was taking the moral high ground and making sure NOT to kill or permanently maim them (though I am sure they were sore the next day). Not the case with Sato.
@@Zurround not really. Miyagi went slow cause he was rather old and slow and Silver was a VERY fast fighter. If Sato simply goes in there, he'd he ham before he can land effective strikes, seeing as Silver's long range kicks will hit him first
Sato isn't trying to break the beam if wood. He set it up as a training tool, much like a makiwara to condition his body. In this case, his shuto.

One thing in favor of Sato is he trained his nephew. His nephew taught Daniel some new key move in cobra kai we can't forget Daniel used it against Kreis and yea Sato by far better than other 3.

A. Miyagi ran out of time. (This would be my reason if i were in his shoes)
B. He wanted daniel to find his own way. But wouldnt withold a new move if daniel needed him.
C. He was protecting him from the dirty side of miyagi-do karate so its open to interpretation

@@TitoBoy805 Granted, Chozen's free shot on Miyagi was a sneak attack/cheapshot from behind with the spear. Head on with or without a spear or any weapon Chozen couldn't hit Mr. Miyagi though. I do agree he was the most formidable/skilled, strongest, experienced martial arts fighter Daniel faced. People don't get Mike Barnes, a top national karate champion at best but a skilled, resilient, aggressive tank regardless, fought/beat down a chubby, out of practice, untrained, afraid Daniel in 3. Though Daniel wasn't scared before Silver's mind games but not fighting for his life as he did against Chozen plus still borderline overweight and out of shape and practice except practicing kata. Mike's one weakness ironically. Chozen vs Mike Barnes would be a very close fight and a brutal, two sided fight to the finish but Chozen would've won. And would definitely destroy Barnes now. Chozen was Sato's number one student, a trained killer born and raised in the ancient okinawan style of karate of Mr. Miyagi's family by his uncle Sato, and a combat instructor for American soldiers. Terry Silver used psychological warfare on Daniel sending his and Mike's two cronies alongside Mike to harass/intimidate Daniel to sign up for the tournament, trained Daniel in the ways of the Cobra Kai briefly, teaching Daniel aggression, brute strength and anger while making Daniel forget everything Miyagi taught Daniel and everything karate was about, making Daniel believe he's invincible, injure himself and once Silver revealed his true nature alongside Kreese and Barnes Daniel was totally broken mentally and emotionally and paralyzed by fear of Barnes. That was the theme of karate kid part three. In the end after Mr. Miyagi's speech about not losing to fear, Daniel overcame his fear of Mike and won using Miyagi's kata counter/defense attack. Which was the only Karate counter technique Mike couldn't defend himself against or counter from Daniel. Daniel in Karate Kid 2 minus Terry Silver's psychological warfare and mind games to instill fear would've beaten Mike street fight or tournament wise but it still would've been a very close, competitive, tough match up.
I agree with your list. Out of all the villains (shown fighting), Silver is easily the most well rounded fighter, but Sato is a master of Miyagi Do, so he wins easily. I'm interested to see how Silver's skills age in Cobra Kai.
@Mike H Had Mike friend, had. Both the character and the actor are dead. Modern day Chozen, I believe is better than Terry, and I hope we get to see that in season 4.

John Kreese was probably better than Silver when they were both in the army. But clearly Silver has surpassed Kreese

One thing that I do want to add is that when we see Miyagi approach Sato and he is striking the large piece of wood he is not trying to break it, he is using the wood for hand conditioning. This seems to (incorrectly) put Miyagi at an advantage when he breaks the large plank that was on top of Sato. But, this is not the same situation, Sato is just training.
Look how easily Miyagi dodges that spinning kick, after having to move to his left to block Silver's incoming kick - suddenly in a very vulnerable position to Silver's spinning kick. Silver has a very quick spin kick, and Miyagi is still able to out maneuver it. That's just not fair, if his defense is that good. That counter spin kick by Silver was devastating, and hits every other fighter on the show. Kreese, Daniel, and Johnny. The answer it has to be Sato if he's at least 75% the fighter Miyagi is; otherwise Miyagi just wasn't from this planet.
I think one guy dodges that spinning kick at the beginning when we first see Terry, however miyagi's dodge was better, like u said he was in a vulnerable position

It's preposterous that this question is even being asked. Sato would absolutely rag-doll all 3 of the others AT THE SAME TIME. Dugan was just a wannabe, and would easily be the first to go down with minimal effort from Sato. Silver and Kreese basically have identical skill sets, but Silver is slightly more dangerous because he has a longer reach, tries to utilize his range, and has somewhat better control of his emotions during a fight (unlike Kreese, he doesn't just charge straight ahead like an angry bull EVERY time). But let's not forget that Miyagi easily took each of them down individually, and didn't seem overly concerned about them double-teaming him before Kreese's ego got in the way. But Miyagi DID, however, write his last will once he agreed to fight Sato. AND Sato trained Chozen in the offensive techniques that he would later pass on to Daniel...which Daniel would then use to defeat Kreese himself. Unless a building collapses on him, there's no possible way Sato doesn't win this easily.

Dugan was a wannabe compared to Kreese, Silver or Miyagi but would probably take your average joe. He was only an ex-army colonel with army combatitive training. Kreese and Silver were ex special forces and far more highly trained and skilled in Karate. Either one would destroy Dugan easily. Sato, Chozen, Johnny and Mike would mop the floor with Dugan easily too .
@@castortroy7704 Daniel beats Dugan too if its after beating Mike Barnes. As wimpy as the ACTOR his his accomplishments by the end of the first trilogy are enough to beat Dugan as far as story continuity is concerned.

Sato was heavily implied to be on Miyagi's level who wrecked Kreese and Silver and he taught Chozen who was way stronger than any Cobra Kai student. Sato is probably also the one who taught Chozen the pressure point technique which allowed him to easily wreck Daniel who is somewhat equal to Johnny and Kreese. It's also the same technique that allowed Daniel to almost kill Kreese so yeah Sato is the best fighter out of the 4
Pretty sure Miyagi is FAR stronger. He was able to break a log Sato couldnt for decades with one strike

None of them are beating Sato. Sato was Miyagi's Rival (Miyagi was superior and Sato would have lost but they were in the same "league"). When you consider how almost effortlessly Miyagi beat those other men no way would Sato lose to them, maybe he would beat them not quite as easily as Miyagi. I think Silver has evolved beyond Kreese and would beat Kreese. ANY of them would beat Colonel Dougan, he was a wannabe Kreese.
Plus Sato likely would have the same knowledge Chosen does in Cobra Kai season 3, making him fairly unbeatable and possibly superhuman

No way was sato and miyagi the same league, miyagi strikes a piece of timber that's trapping sato with one blow to free him. Karate kid 2.
Sato had been striking a piece of timber every day for all the year's that miyagi had left, and you can see how worn the wood is that sato has repeatedly hit. Sato had vowed to kill miyagi if he ever returned and miyagi would never fight him. Not because he couldn't beat him,it was because he was his friend and in respect of his fellow father's student.
I think Silver would win in honesty, Kreese was easily taken down twice, by Miyagi, if you look very close, Miyagi was barley dodging Silver’s high kicks, it was a very close hit, (that may be because Thomas Ian Griffith is actually experienced in real life, & at that time they weren’t expecting him to move like that) Dugan was easily taken down by Miyagi, more so then Kreese, in Saito’s case….Miyagi most likely didn’t want to fight his friend, someone he truly loved. So Silver wins

Mr. Miyagi vs Sato would be a very close, evenly matched, narrow fight. Both were trained by Miyagi's father in the ancient okinawan ways of karate. Sato was larger and stronger but Miyagi was wiser and his father's son. I think Miyagi would narrowly win and cripple Sato's knees or legs so he didn't have to kill Sato.
With one lesson, Chozen made Daniel the best fighter in Cobra Kai with the pressure point techniques. Imagine all of the things Miyagi and Sato knew that they never taught Daniel and Chozen?
@Mike H of this group, it’s no contest. Sato might not have matched Miyagi but the gap wouldn’t have been far - I expect Sato would handle all 3 easily like Chozen would handle Barnes and Johnny easily.
Yes, and what is more I suspect that there were some things Miyagi knew that Sato did not due to being the son of their master while Sato was just an "honorary" son and due to the fact that Miyagi was superior to Sato. I am thinking that this fictional universe has some death move similar to the one that Uma Thurman used to kill David Carrodine that is even more "restricted" than the techniques Daniel learned from Chozen that ONLY Miyagi was taught and died with him...
Sorry but no. Daniel is not the best. He's tied with Johnny. Johnny knows Daniel knows that move, if they fought he would make sure Daniel doesnt use it on him lol. And its ONE tecnique. Chozen knows MANY MORE

@@Rambo20244 Probability scale. If 2 fighters are a perfectly even match its 50,50. If one is slightly better it might be 51,49 or 52, 48. If Sato wins he would kill Miyagi but even if Miyagi has major advantage there is still a chance of loss. For example if its 90, 10 in favor of Miyagi that means Sato has a one in ten chance of winning which means death for Miyagi. Even with the odds greatly in his favor he had to consider the possibility of it. He still had the advantage.
Miyagi would beat sato. Yes sato has size but miyagi has a better understanding of karate and can control his emotions which means he controls the situation
He would? You're making it sound certain, but we actually don't know, as both were on the same skill level, but never fought, so you never know! Don't assume Miaygi would have won for sure! Sato was a 10th Dan Grandmaster, who could have found that one vital strike, that put Miaygi in a coma, or dead.
It would've been an extremely tough, narrowly close, two sided fight. I personally believe Mr. Miyagi vs Sato would be a tie.
@@pauljohnson6019 Well for starters, their teacher was Miyagi's father, whom undoubtedly spent more time with Miyagi than Sato and most likely would've taught Miyagi more than he taught anyone else including Sato. Also Miyagi would've had the advantage of being in control of his emotions. Sato was blinded by rage and wanting revenge, which even he acknowledged himself later.

I think that Terry is likely the best because his manipulation is so big that he will give you PTSD against him.
Kreese is not the best anymore because he already had his karate days.
Sato would be almost as strong but Sato has no concentration because of his anger.

Sato had rage, but it was controlled rage. His concentration would have been fine. His skill level is comparable to Miyagi. He would have destroyed Silver almost as easily. Maybe even easier, because Sato wouldn't have gone easy on him like Miyagi did.

Given the rooftop fight and Ned easily floored Eric with an elbow in the 4 v1 before the other three jumped in and blocked and countered Eric's 2nd blow with a knee to the chest after Eric elbowed Gabe, got kicked by Charlie and floored Morgan effortlessly beforehand.

Have you considered that he was well past his prime in the mid 1980s and maybe he fought better back then? You do not know for sure that he ALWAYS relied on that same move just because of a few fights he had much later in life?

Kreese is a one trick pony. Silver is more diverse frankly, someone would have picked up on Kreese over reliance of his front punch.
I think Sato might be the best. Kreese and Colonel Dugan both show similar mistakes of being predictable and the stiffness in their stances. I don't think they have declined as fighters in my opinion, but I think it's just something that comes with age and ring rust. When fighters get older, they tend to become more reliant on older moves and stick to what they know, and it seems like they don't practice anymore, but mostly teach. Sato really only has the Miyagi-Do title that gives us an indication that he's good. Miyagi never seems afraid of Sato, but the idea of having to face him. We know that they both trained with Miyagi's father, but we don't know who the better martial artist was. However, Cobra Kai gave us an insight into some of the new techniques in Miyago-Do. Chozen presumably learned the pressure point technique from Sato and while I do believe Terry is a superior martial artist to Kreese, we have seen that these techniques are able to beat the Cobra Kai style. Terry has shown to put up the best fight against Miyagi, but he still got beaten pretty easily and if he had to face Sato; could Terry counter Miyagi-Do Karate or would he repeat the same mistakes?

I agree with your rankings. Sato is only rivaled by Miyagi himself both in knowledge and techniques.
In Cobra Kai season 3 it has been revealed when Daniel sparred with Chozen, that Sato kept the old Miyagi family Karate secret scrolls.
Always wondered if the Miyagi and Sato death match was not preempted by the hurricane, Sato has a strong chance of beating and killing Miyagi.
I'm a big believer in Mr. Miyagi's father keeping some secrets within the family and teaching them only to Miyagi and not Sato, which would lead to Sato's defeat in combat against Mr. Miyagi.
Miyagi karate is all about balance and Sato was very unbalanced due to his feelings so I don't see him beating his old friend.
Sato was the sensei for Miyagi do after Miyagi s father died. Before Sato died he put Chozen in as his successor. Chozen has no logical successor at the moment. One of the current students like Miguel or Hawk?
Sato would win. As we have seen in the recent Cobra Kai, Miyagi-Do had a whole level of lethality and dangerousness that Miyagi never showed. I think that this was because he likely abandoned those techniques due to his WWII experiences. Sato didn't abandon those techniques. Also, Sato very much had a similar attitude in a fight with Kreese and Silver. More advanced skill and a ruthless fighting attitude? A deadly combination.
I think Sato vs Miyagi would be even.

I thought it was pretty obvious that Kreese was superior to Silver. I mean it's been hinted at throughout the series. It was implied that Silver couldn't have beaten the lieutenant in the fight to the death, which was why Kreese fought in his place; not to mention how much Silver clearly looked up to Kreese and the fact that Kreese was the main sensei of Cobra Kai.

Students surpass their masters a bunch of times. Silver was clearly better than Kreese since he trained a guy who would mop the floor with Daniel and any Cobra Kai student. The only reason Silver wasn't in charge of Cobra Kai was that he was busy being rich and evil somewhere else.

Another interesting and informative video, Ken. I've long wondered if Terry Silver competed in the U.S. Army Karate tournaments that Kreese won three years in a row (1970-1972), and if so, what position Silver placed. Silver may have just been a 'late bloomer' when it came to developing his karate skills; I liked that you mentioned how we see Silver keeping up with hard sparring well into the '80s (whereas Kreese, apparently, did not), so by that point in time, it's more than merely possible Silver's karate skills were above Kreese's. On the other hand, it could be that Kreese was simply more skilled than Silver at winning point tournaments. A third possibility (given Silver's unquestioning loyalty to Kreese) is that Terry Silver "let" Kreese win those tournaments, as he didn't wish to discredit his fellow soldier who saved his life multiple times in Vietnam.
Next up, I hope you do an in-depth breakdown of *Ken* *Cole* vs. *Tom* *Cole* -- Who would win in a fight? And *Ken* *Cole* vs. LA District Attorney *Willy* *Cole* . Car salesmen and lawyers are deceptive and dangerous people, so good luck should you ever come to blows with them. (And even if you won, you might ultimately lose...in court.)

Thanks for the insight. I'm wondering if you have an opinion of what Kreese has gone through post - Miyagi fights. He was so ineffective. Do you think this flattened his ego as a martial artist? He was still able-bodied after Miyagi threw him to the floor, but didn't get up to keep fighting. Why? Was he afraid after all, or possibly afraid of being more humiliated? Was he humbled enough to wonder why he was so easily defeated, and curious about Miyagi's style and desire to learn more things? Or does he think Miyagi got lucky that day? What do you think his mindset is about it all and does it affect his own esteem?

And to be honest I have to agree with your ranking, thats exactly how I would have done it because its logical, even though Terry Silver is a favourite character of mine, you have to go with the facts and SATO was as good as miyagi and miyagi didn't have to break a sweat against the others, he even kicked Mike Barnes in the butt and Mike Barnes without a doubt is the toughest out of the students with Chozen a close 2nd I think. So yes I'm looking forward to seeing the return of Terry Silver in the season 4 and hope he has not lost his evilness as thats what makes him a great Villain, keep up the great work Ken and look forward to the next video. I think Kreese using the same approach might come down to the idea that that was his signature technique in his glory days. Those moves were good moves (in his mind) that served him well in the past. After they failed him (maybe for the first time) in his schermish with Miyagi, he wanted to prove to himself that Miyagi was just lucky, and maybe Kreese felt that he wasn't really prepared enough (he was flustered in his mind over attacking Johnny and his other students) to make those moves really work in that moment.
Ken, this is another great video! I really appreciate the way you analyze all the details of the fight choreography, and go over it so well. I hope you understand how much I enjoy your videos, even if I have some disagreements with opinions... My personal take is: I agree with ranking Dugan as #4 and Sato as #1. However, I would put Silver as #3 and Kreese as #2. This belief starts with how Silver thanks Kreese for all the times he saved him. That gives me the impression that Kreese is also stronger than Silver in Karate (it was never specified - it's just how I interpret things). Personally, I don't think Kreese was much weaker in the 80s than he was in the 70s, I think Mr. Miyagi just knew a more powerful kind of Karate than Kreese did (and it would have worked against Kreese in the early 70s, if tested then). Remember, Mr. Miyagi is much older than both Kreese and Silver (those two have the advantage in youth) yet Mr. Miyagi dominates them both. Neither of them even landed one single punch or kick on Mr. Miyagi. However, Kreese did at least dodge one chop from Mr. Miyagi (Silver never even did that). This makes me think Kreese is slightly above Silver in Karate... On another subject, I agree with what you said about Sato. But I believe that Karate Kid part II gave us a hidden hint that Miyagi is actually better in Karate than Sato (but Miyagi just chooses not to announce this). Please feel free to watch a video I posted on my UA-cam channel called "Story you missed in Karate Kid II" for the detail what I'm referring to. I'd love to read any comments from you to see if you agree with me that this suggests Mr. Miyagi is above Sato.

Here’s some food for thought both miyagi and sato were trained by miyagi father at the same time. We’ve never seen Sato in action. And that board wasn’t made to break through it for conditioning his hand. Also Sato trained Chozen his newphew. Sato also knew miyagi ancient secret techniques.
I completely agree with your ranking of Sato as the best. I have a couple of additional thoughts that further prove the Sato theory. My thoughts come from smaller key scenes in Karate Kid 2, the first being the ice breaking scene in the bar, when Daniel prepares to break the ice, the focus turns to Sato when Daniel and Mr. Miagi begin the breathing exercise, you see in Sato's face that he is interested in how Miagi has done as a teacher, and he smiles slightly when he sees that Miagi is passing on the secrets of Miagi-Do, this shows his confidence as an equal to Miagi. Of all the teachers in the four films, Miagi always handles them with confidence and calm, with Sato, Miagi shows a sense of hesitation, proving that he views Sato as an equal rival. Even though Daniel wins over Chosen with the drum technique, Daniel receives by far the most punishment from Chosen than he got from Johnny or Mike Barns and is almost beaten bloody and blue by Chosen, so Chosen clearly has the advantage and is a much more skilled and adaptive fighter, this shows that Sato is probably the most skilled teacher, maybe even a more skilled teacher than Miagi as at that time he had never taught anyone other than Daniel and Sato had been teaching for 40 years. Also, Miagi never was known for being too over confident, but he always seemed to be sure of his ability to overcome the other teachers from the films, but when he gives Daniel the truck and house "back home" will and testament before the fight with Sato and his general concern for Daniel "making it" back home on his own, we see that Miagi is humble enough to know that Sato has just as good, if not a better chance of winning. Logistically Miagi beat all three of the other negative teachers with relative ease, and we never got to see him fight, but your theory makes the most sense. Also, I have this question, did Silver take Miagi too lightly? His general demeanor was joking and silly during his fight with Miagi, do you think Silver would have been victorious against Miagi had he been more focused and truly determined? Your comments on Silver are right on, he seems to be the most effective and most skilled, perhaps Silver has a much deeper history in martial arts?
Sato and Miyagi it's almost too close. Could be decided on who might be willing to be more ruthless in the end. In this extreme scenario, I think I would have to favour Sato..

Couldn't agree more with the rankings you gave out. What i am really looking forward to is how Miyagi Do Karate will evolve in season four with Daniel and Johnny working side by side, brining the best of both teachings they have had together. It could prove to be quite the style to be beaten, especially what we have seen from chozen so far in both the films and the series. Would be intersting to see a video on your take of what could happen with regards to this.

Agree with putting Sato first based on their backgrounds. Always found it interesting that Kreese was a military karate champion when presumably Silver wasn’t, but Silver isn’t at all phased by how easily Miyagi beats Kreese and still mocks him, suggesting he feels he’s the superior fighter. I guess a lot could have changed over the roughly 13 years between Kreese being champion and KK3, and Cobra Kai suggests that Silver had a lot of catching up to do (which based on the start of KK3, he was doing relentlessly)
No, that scene never certified Silver is better than Kreese. That's a misjudgment by many. Who do you think taught Terry Silver karate? John Kreese. But Silver advanced, no doubt. Kreese was an infantry colonel in the armed forces and the US army karate champion. Silver lasted longer against Miyagi than Kreese because Mr. Miyagi was toying with Silver to humiliate him more.

Why risk injury, or Barnes and Kreese recovering and having to fight 2 or 3 at a time instead? My judgment would be that Kreese was better than Silver initially, but Silver trained relentlessly after what happened in Cobra Kai season 3 and likely then surpassed Kreese

We already know that Miyagi beat all of them..and Sato had the same teacher as Miyagi did which was his father. Sato would beat all of them. With respect to Sensei John Kreese & Terry silver; it would definitely be a challenge if both of them fought one on one. They both learned at the same military tactics and techniques as well as both of them are experts in Cobra Kai. Chances are it would probably be a draw. As far as Dugan is concerned, yes... he belongs as last. He's pretty much all emotionally messed up as you conveyed.

According to the poster in KK2, Sato is the official instructor of the U.S. military. So naturally one could conclude that he is the source of Kreese, Silver, & Dugan's knowledge. Therefore better than all of them. How ironic that the teachings of Miyagi's own father would end up being warped into the teachings of Cobra Kai.
That's not really a good argument. Miguel beat Robbie in all of their fights yet Daniel has still shown to have the upper hand on Johnny when they fought.

There is no question Sato, a true master, is superior. He is so formidable that Mr. Miyagi legitimately believed there was a chance he would die in battle against Sato, hence Mr. Miyagi giving Daniel his last will and testament. Mr. Miyagi would have defeated Sato, but it would have been a brutal battle.

I think Miyagi thought he might die only because he would not be able to end Sato's life. I think Miyagi knew that he was the superior fighter. His father may have also passed a little more on to his own son than he did to Sato. In a similar sort of way that Miyagi didn't really teach Daniel the full scope of his karate. The more I've watched part 2, the more I've noticed little hints that suggest Miyagi had the clear edge over Sato. Miyagi knew it, and I think Sato begins to remember it throughout the movie but is held to his Okinawan code of honor.

I think also that Miyagi just knew with it simply being a fight to the death in general that there was a chance he would die. I don't necessarily think he would've thought any differently if he was approaching a fight to the death against Kreese or Silver either. He's not arrogant after all.

There's no reason for the writers to include the will and testament scene other than to signal that Sato was at least within striking distance of being a threat to Miyagi's life. I agree with the assessment that Sato would be the most dangerous partly because Miyagi himself seems to think so. When he decides that he has no choice but to fight Sato he puts his legal affairs in order. None of the other sensei appear to garner that much respect from him.

Sato, miyaggi was intimidated by him, they try to make it seem that it has to do with honor, but I believe miyaggi was terrified by him. Miyaggi toyed around with the others. I think siva comes in second followed by kreese than that other guy.

Silver may have had a chance against Miyagi if he hadn't under estimated him. Had he been more serious, I bet he would have stood a chance. Kreese was distracted by anger and pride, Silver wanted to humiliate Miyagi, but he actually had Miyagi on the defensive due to Silver's more rounded style and adaptability
Yes, I recently analyzed the fight and realized that Terry obviously did all the attacking but if he maybe let Miyagi counter an attack he would've maybe been able to counter Miyagi's if that makes sense.
But Miyagi is on a whole other level and as we know he knew other techniques which he never even used.
Here’s a question. In 3, right before Kreese stops Terry and says “we’re old friends” right before it looked like they were both going to attack Miyagi. Do you think he could have taken them both on at the same time? Love the channel!
I do think he could've taken both on at the same time, and I'm sad that we won't ever be able to see Miyagi do that. But maybe we'll get Chozen v. Kreese and Silver at once 😄
@@KenCole I am wondering if Kreese, Silver, and Barnes were to surround Miyagi and fight him together as a team AT THE SAME TIME would Miyagi still win and if so would he win but get hurt some unable to counter every attack? He was being CAREFUL when fighting Silver and Kreese not to kill or permanently maim them (he did not like them AT ALL but he was taking the moral high ground). I think if they were to attack him AT THE SAME TIME WORKING TOGETHER he would lose the "luxury" of fighting carefully to avoid hurting them too badly and would HAVE to either kill or maim them to avoid getting hurt himself.

Miyagi seems to be experienced in fighting while outnumbered e.g. He was able to beat Johnny and his gang, Chozen (with weapon) and his gang, then in the next KK, he fought a group of random scumbags plus when terry and kreese was abt to team up on him he did his stance and seemed to be confident before Kreese insisted on fighting him alone

Chozen being the only one to get a shot on miyagi by the spear...but cause he was chcking on daniel....then miyagi beat barnes and his crew...then beat barnes..kreese..and silver....miyagi beat everybody ...even in the next karate kid. yes miyagi would have beatten all 3 of them.

Sato's background SHOULD make him top pick here, but he is still an unknown quality as far as actual fighting skill goes, He should have been able to go, at least toe to toe with Miyagi, but we never got to see that happen. Ultimately, if the death fight were to have happened, either Miyagi would have spared his old friend, or Sato would have shown mercy, possibly both, with Miyagi sparing Sato and Sato taking advantage. but stopping before the death blow. No matter how you slice it, Miyagi had plot armor that Sato would never had been able to break.
Consider also that the wood beam that Sato was trying to break was found by Miyagi and Sato 40 years prior. Sato had clearly been trying to break it for some time, as indicated by the wear on the wood where Sato was striking it. Breaking that wood beam would be an incredible achievement, one that he had been working on for presumably 40 years. Then later, Miyagi (conveniently) breaks a similar wood beam to save Sato's life. Maybe you can chalk that up to adrenaline rush, but then again, fighting for your life would boost your adrenaline levels too.
We have no real reference of Sato's fighting skill other then he is Miyagi Do, he owns a large dojo that trains US soldiers, and that Chozen, who we KNOW can fight, is his finest student. This says alot in his favor, but we still haven't actually witnessed his skills to properly judge him. Notice also... Sato was going for a similar punch that failed with Kreese and Dugan. Who knows haw that would have gotten over...
I think SIlver is a real contender to Sato, for all the reasons mentioned in the video. I think he may be a little more aggressive then Sato as well. I do, however believe that Sato, with his years of Miyagi Do training, possibly even more then Miyagi himself had, (remember, Sato Stayed in Okinawa when Miyagi left, and I doubt that Miyagi's father took sides, continuing to train his remaining student) would beat Silver just as easily as Miyagi did.
I think Kreese is properly placed, for the reasons stated in the video. He is persistent and patient, but he does not seem to learn from his mistakes. I think Dugan is not in the league of the other three, a true one trick pony who does not know what to do when his skill set fails him, One way he DOES step up to Kreese in particular, is beating up on his students when he feels the need to prove how tough he is. Against anybody with real fighting skills, Dugan fails quickly, as shown when he attempted to try to fight Miyagi
Overall who do I, personally think is best? Theoretically, Sato is obvious, but for what we have actually seen on the screen, SIlver takes the prize. Keep in mind also, with Sato's Miyagi Do training, Silver's mind tricks should be all but completely ineffective, as it was with Miyagi. This would likely be true with Chozen as well, although it still seems to be lost on poor Daniel. Johnny, unfortunately did not have the benefit of Miyagi's wisdom.

I could see Sato having the same level of skill as Miyagi, if not slightly less so, but he'd definitely be more aggressive and offensively oriented than Miyagi, which might make him more dangerous, but also not as difficult to land a hit on.
Miyagi always seemed to prefer to feel an enemy out, get a look at their initial conduct before going in for the hit. With Kreese, as you say in this video, he let him beat himself simply by dodging. In Part 3, he already knew Kreese's style and so went in on the attack much sooner, but still let him throw the first hit. Against Terry and Col. Dugan, he took his time letting them come to him and cleanly wiped both.
Although we only have speculation, considering Miyagi left Daniel his will before the planned fight with Sato, Miyagi evidently knew that either he'd die by simply letting Sato kill him or he'd fight in earnest but realise he couldn't win, not against his friend. Whatever the case, Sato was the only opponent Miyagi showed any real apprehension toward fighting against, unlike Kreese or even Terry. (Col. Dugan was honestly a joke, he looks like he could've been beaten by Daniel or Johnny... from Part 1).
Coupled with the fact that we find out in Cobra Kai,

Chozen reveals to Daniel that Sato taught him the true style of Miyagi-Do, all of the techniques and specifically the paralysing moves. If Sato knew this extent of the style, then he'd absolutely murder Kreese, Terry and Dugan. It'd fit with his personality as well, being more aggressive then Miyagi ever was. It would also explain any apprehension Sato showed in fighting Miyagi, as Miyagi would surely know the same level but understandably never use it as it may have been too extreme, even for him to use. (I dunno, I'm just wildly guessing with that one).
Miyagi definately knew those things, but he'd probably never actually use them. He was all about defending.
My ranking: Sato 1st place, Silver 2nd, Kreese 3rd, Dugan 4th.

Even though Silver is my favorite one, I have to agree. We didnt get to see Sato fight so we can only speculate and assume he is the better fighter because of his amazing background for which we have the best reference on Miyagi's fighting and we did get to see him fight Terry and Miyagi totally annihilated him. I mean, we al know that the actor that plays Silver in real life would beat them all because he is by far the most skilled if not the only with martial arts background but when it comes to characters Sato is supposed to have the same background as Miyagi but in addition lets not forget that Sato got to train with Miyagi's father LONGER than him because Miyagi left Okinawa at a very early age whereas Sato stayed and its very likely he would continue training with him so it might be possible for Sato to be even better than Miyagi which is mind blowing.
This is an interesting point about Sato and whether he might have trained longer than Miyagi.
@@KenCole i think he most definitively did. miyagi left okinawa at 20 or younger and returned after 40 years or so and his father was still around so sato had all that time to keep training with him.

Sato and Miyagi trained together in Okinawa, Neither Terry or Kreese could beat Miyagi in KK3 so they could NOT beat Sato, (because Sato taught Chozen the darker secrets of their karate), and Chozen taught those secrets to Daniel, who beats Kreese with it in season 3's end. So I think Daniel could probably beat Terry Silver in a real match, but not in the tournament, (because of the rules).

I totally agree with you in that order, too bad we'll never get to see the Miyagi & Sato fight though we may have seen the glimpse of it through Daniel & Chosen fight. It could be a tie bcuz in Karate Kid 2 Chosen lost to Daniel but in the Cobra Kai series Chosen clearly won over Daniel, even though it was only a sparring session.

Great video, and I love all your points, but Sato was not as skilled as Miyagi. In KKII we see Sato practicing karate chopping a beam of wood repeatedly but never able to break it. Miyagi broke a beam of wood about the same thickness during the typhoon that struck when it was on top of Sato. That's why Miyagi fled Okinawa. He didn't want to kill his best friend, and if Sato fought Miyagi, Miyagi would've ended up killing him.
This isn't a criticism of Sato by no means; this is an acknowledgment of how truly awesome and terrifying Miyagi's karate skills really are.

Silver is highly efficient with his high kicks. It's his close combat skills that concern me. I say Sato beats him in close combat.
