I have revered Telemann for over 50 years--since I was age 15. I am here to add that the opening piece of his Tafelmusik is unusually like Telemann's mainstream: It requires a sensitivity to subtlety and delicacy of harmony/orchestration which performance/recording after performance has failed to realize. And now, at last: I must applaud! (My spirit had given up.) The music is done artistic justice here, disclosing the depth of its mastery. "Telemann is a subtle artist, whose profundities are not revealed to dullards" [Sir Arthur Hutchings, paraphrased]. Yes.

There is no such thing as who was the greatest composer. Telemann, Bach or Handel, they were all extraordinary men gifted with the blessings of music. Each of their own, separate styles and different ways and yet all very passionate and very moving. It's amazing that most their works have survived 2 World Wars and have been preserved, and it's up to our modern generation to express their music and keep for future generations to come. All the above men mentioned were all men of faith and their faith in Almighty God and in the Lord is a testimony to their love and mastery to the art of what we call the blessed gift of God from Himself, Music.

Always when I listen to Telemann´s chamber works, I have the same sensation I get when listening to J.S.Bach´s sacred works, that is being in touch with something divine, music that germinates from something beyond the human mind. It´s like the sanctity of the secular music, treated with such taste, profundity, respect for the instruments, extremely witty. No wonder both men were so close, and although they met few times, they always had each other in mind and even got to be "family" (C.Ph.Bach was his grandson). Despite how prolific he was, you never get the sensation of hearing something over and over, which you can experience with other composers. It´s a composer to admire, that deserves to be in better consideration in concert halls than it is today.

It wasn't a 'school', as such; more like a musical shift. It was almost a century from Haydn's birth (1732) to Beethoven's death (1827), with Mozart in the middle (1756-1791) and there is no evidence that the three were ever in the same place at the same time. At the peak of Beethoven's fame, Haydn was dead (1809) and Mozart long dead.
It is also worth remembering that many lesser composers, famous in their day, were writing in the new classical style by about 1760.
But, yes: you are right. The early classical works have an eerie baroque flavour. Many composers kept the harpsichord resolutely for decades.

    • @anthonypuccetti8779

CPE Bach was not Mozart's godfather. Telemann was CPE Bach's godfather. JC Bach didn't start the classical period or start the Viennese school, he was a galant style composer, as were most other composers of his generation, and was influenced primarily by Neapolitan opera and Giovanni Battista Sammartini. The Italian galant and Neapolitan opera styles was the basis for the classical style. The Viennese school began with Austrian composers such as Holzbauer, Wagenseil and Monn, who were galant style composers, and Haydn, who was influenced by them.

Yes, I'm a big Zelenka fan too. He wrote far less than Bach or Telemann, though, and most of his music was for the Church. You can fit all his orchestral music on a few cds.

I remember driving in the car with my mother, who I hated, playing the classical station in NY, WQXR, completely transfixed and at the conclusion of the piece, the disc jockey announcing in his snide, pompous voice reeking of snobbish elitist class patronization, modulated by an uncharacteristic sense of humility the composer as Georg Telemann. The music made such a deep and indelible impression, more than half a century later, I am reminded of the breadth and expanse of this genius. Thank you for posing
