Sorry this is a very vague answer as it depends our clinical evidence. Say it is anything from 12 weeks up to 7-8 months from when you start a treatment plan. There are many factors that count towards the difference in time length the main factor is if there is problems or dysfunction around the big toe as this will increase the load going through the leaser plantar plate those toes
If you’re getting symptoms after swimming, this can be irritated if you are using the Foot to push you off the wall, however if this is not the case and you’re not pushing off the wall and you’re still getting irritation on swimming that is a sign you’re not offloading it enough
Really helpful video , thank you. I tore my plantar plate last July but it was misdiagnosed until a few weeks ago when it was finally scanned. It’s really painful still and I actually tore the other about 6 months after as I was limping on it so heavily. Will it still be helpful to use the taping on it, and will that still be able to help it heal?

Thank you so much. I’ve also listened to your podcast on plantar plate injuries from about a year ago which was really helpful, esp with regard to the carbon insole / rocker sole shoes.
We only start those exercises once there is significant strength in the toes. In our clinic we say once you can do the toe flexion exercise with a black band, though our black bands we use are much harder than most, so hard to quantifying this with out seeing you.
How long should a person use this taping method? Is there a cut off time period where it is doing harm instead of helping or does it matter? I’ve been dealing with a plantar plate injury for four months now & apprehensive about removing the tape too soon.
@@NKActiveClinics thank you for your response & all the info you have put out about this injury. It’s the most comprehensive I have found. It has been much appreciated!
Hi Deep Black, the taping can help with the pain, however taping will not reduce the correct deformity long term,, the only way to fix the deformity is surgery.
I do not know if I have a plantar plate tear. NHS podiatrist says that I have capsulitis with possible plantar tear. I have a hammer toe and bunion. Should I use this tape to hold down toe in these circumstances? NHS podiatrist says they don't do taping & it is questionable if it works for anything. All I have been given are flat foam type insoles with a softer type of foam under.the capsulitis. I have tried to do it myself with kinesiology tape. Should I change to the zinc oxide and do you have any other tips please?
Thanks for the message Chris, it is common to have more than one condition occurring at once. For Plantar plate injuries, taping can be helpful to reduce pain and symptoms, it will not change the deformity, however can be helpful in pain management. Personally I think zinc oxide tape is needed, rather than K Tape, as it is too flexible. If taping is helpful then the use a rocker stiff shoe or carbon lining can be helpful. Then the key is to build the strength as the pain settles, then graded return to activity, however this is depend on the severity of the hammer toe and how flexible it is. As always the advice is the speak to your NHS Podiatrist, however we can help out if required. Thanks Nick

Hello Nick, Would you happen to know anyone that can help me with this in Merida, Mexico? I did a search for a podiatrist and the reviews were sadly lacking…there doesn’t seem to be any actual doctors for this here?!? I am quite perplexed because this is a capital city and has one of the best hospital systems in the country. The hospital is the one that the American President would be taken to if something went wrong while he was here…so I’m quite confused as to why there seems to be no reputable doctors of the feet?!? Or, would I be better off contacting a physiotherapist? Thank you so much for your help in advance.

Thanks for the question. Depends which bone in the toes there are 5 metatarsals and 14 toe bones. In general people with a fracture find it better in a rigid rocker shoe or boot. Speak to the person managing your fracture, they can advise.
Steve Wells trail and error, I explain we need to get the toe as plantar flexed as possible, however it must not be uncomfortable to walk on. I get the patients to try it and learn how much they can tolerate
Hi Martin, you can use this kind of tape, however the method is slightly different. Drop me an email to nick@nkactive.co.uk and I can send you video of the taping. @@NKActiveClinics Thank you so much for replying! I was looking for ways to tape the big toe and I came across that type of taping that you show me in the image. @@NKActiveClinics Thank you very much, Nick! You're very kind! I saw a foot and ankle surgeon two days ago, showed him my last MRI and X-Rays and he said it's not turf toe, but hallux rigidus grade 0 (for being grade 0 it hurts like hell!). He advised a steroid injection on both hallux and he's positive that that will clear everything up. I've only been doing physiotherapy and resting for the last 5 weeks without seeing any improvements. What do you think about that?
@@martinwright1575 It is hallux rigidius taping can help or using a rigid sole shoe or rocker sole shoe or orthoses with a Mortons extension or a 1st toe cut out to off load (it all depends how stiff the toe is) A steroid injection can be very helpful and often can help settle symptoms. The Key part with the physio is to make the exercises harder and make sure they are hard enough (this agains depends on the range of motion from the toe) to see any good strength changes it takes longer than 5 weeks
Hi Nick, just watched through your plantar plate playlist. Some great content, so thank you. If I was to tape my toe, can I just wear runners as per normal or is this intended to be done with the met some and cut out?
iDuncan thanks for the questions. You can use the tape and just run as normal as long as the tape doesn’t cause any pain on running (if it does usually means you have pulled it too tight). It can be used with or with out the insole with met dome. It all depends what helps settle your symptoms.
thanks so much for the reverse bit of tape tip. Perfect.
