Bob and Brad discuss how to fix foot pain (metatarsalgia).
Some of our astute followers have noticed me slurring my words. I am not drunk but working with Brad it would be justifiable. I had 6 infected cysts removed from my mouth (noncancerous) and I have residual scar tissue and numbness. I will try to do better. Thanks Bob.

I asked about this a month or so ago. Thanks for doing a video on it. One other thing I found out about it was my calves were super tight from doing lots of calf raises at the gym (been working on building calves). I started massaging and stretching my calves along with walking around with these little foot pads made for plantar fasciitis. Within a couple weeks I had no more pain. Now I am diligent about keeping my calves massaged and not letting them get tight on me.

I’ve been running barefoot (actually barefoot, not in minimalist shoes) for over 11 years now. Somewhere around 10,000 miles, several ultra marathons up to 100k distance. It’s been a life changer for my running. I need to start running in some minimalist shoes to be able to run on carrying terrains / courses, but I have become very picky on my foot ware. It’s important to transition slowly into barefoot running, otherwise you can have some major issues.

I love, love, love that you guys are endorsing minimalist shoes. My feet have always felt the best barefoot or nearly so. And the next time I buy shoes I plan to buy Xero shoes, which are considered barefoot shoes.
It's crazy what people have done to our feet for vanity. I have to admit, the wide toe box doesn't look as attractive to me. But the older I get the less I care about appearance if it comes at the expense of comfort or health.

Crocs hurt my foot more than any other shoe! I do a lot of gardening so I thought a lose shoe would be good when I'm squatting all the time. But the crocs allow my foot to slide forward, jambing my toes into the tip of the shoe and even though it looks broad, the shape of the shoe actually slants down on the outside, putting pressure on my 3rd and 4th toes! My best solution has been my New Balance walking shoes, and I'm VERY careful now to make sure I balance my weight toward the heel when I'm stooping or squatting or even walking. I threw the crocs out, massage my feet morning and night, and have very little pain anymore.

I have always despised wearing shoes. I could never find anything that was comfortable and always took them off as soon as I got home. When I took them off at the end of the day and stood up everything would pop. Finally found out I have Ehlers-Danlos. Foot pain is horrible. Thanks for all the videos you guys do. They really help me with everything.

I’ve had Metatarsalgia for a year and a half now, i feel like i have tried everything, what’s annoying is i’ve never worn tight shoes or high heels x.x … is there anything one can do to increase/build up the fatty pad under the ball of the foot naturally that would help cushion it?

I was told to wear whose with a wide toe box and a rigid sole. I definitely get pain when I wear a shoe with a flexible sole.

Hey Bob and Brad. Love your videos, they help a lot with a 50 year old trying to hold it together as long as I can. While working on my knees I've developed a foot problem because I had to transition to doing squats and lunges on the balls of my feet. Now my knees feel great but I have a lot of pain in my forefoot. Not sure if it's Mortons, Metatarsalgia or maybe even Planters. Is this a fixable problem with just physical therapy?

I like Merrell's Encore line and I love my Birkenstocks. Their negative heel really helped my feet. Chaco sandals are pretty good and have a negative heel, if you can handle constantly having to adjusting the straps. Plus they are water tolerant for beaches and hiking.

  • @akeleven

I gave up on closed shoes, only wear sandals now. I found a style ( Teva Tirra) that has adjustable straps over the forefoot, nearly flat with a little bit of arch support. All I have to do is add metatarsal pads and they are as comfortable as any shoe I've ever had. Unfortunately the company discontinued that model so I have been buying off eBay. Hopefully will have a few pairs stocked up to last a long time. Those designer shoes you talked about are expensive.

    Two years ago
Out of thin air, my feet started to hurt while I play football and I’ve always described it as tingling, numbness, needless, and burning pain in the arch of my both feet.
The bottom of my foot too ( the ball of the foot) hurts like hell too. It’s like they’re suffocating or going to sleep but in a sharp way.
Most of the time this happens only when I wear any type of shoes. However, over time the pain became worse and worse that my both feet hurt too even when I walk.
In Russia they told me that all of my nerves are fine however the reason behind this pain is that I have a first-degree flat foot allegedly. I purchased custom-made insoles and they kinda helped me. The pain is 10 outta 10 without them. And with them is 7/10.
Recently another doctor informed me that my arch is fine and I don’t have a flat foot. I have plantar fasciitis instead.
And now I’m confused because one of the famous symptoms of plantar fasciitis is severe pain when you take your first step in the morning and heel pain in general. Because most of the time my heel feels just fine and it doesn’t hurt at all. It has been like this for two years now, unfortunately, I’ve missed many semi-professional football tryouts due to this injury and my dream is falling apart.

I wore Keen hiking boots which have wide toe boxes and I got metatarsalgia after hiking and walking 30 miles in 5 days. Lots of waterfall stairs and am sure it's from overuse and that terrain. Last month I bought Topo Terraventure 3 shoes which have the zero drop and wide toe box. Odd looking because we've been brainwashed all this time, but they fit sooo nice. I'm never going back to pointy shoes. They're all getting replaced.

I've also been stretching a lot and writing the ABCS with my feet. I'm not taking any anti-inflammatories. I already don't have good circulation to my feet (never had since I was a kid) so I also am only heating my feet and not icing them.

I think this is what I have. I drove 6 hours a few years ago in Sketchers that are otherwise comfy but are extremely narrow at the top (I had never really had a problem before then because my feet are narrow too) and my left foot has never been the same again. Went to the GP but I did not get a diagnosis was just told to massage the foot. That hasn't helped and now I can't even lie on my left side in bed because my left foot on the mattress causes more pain. I have foot pain all the time now which reduces a little when I massage but I cannot effectively massage myself. Any home remedies you can recommend or is physiotherapy my only hope?

I had surgery for removal of a Morton’s neuroma in my right foot several years ago. Then two subsequent surgeries to correct the first surgery! My second toe tries to go under the big toe. And all the calluses that go with that unnatural position. (Per doctor, my long toe bones are extra long). My foot constantly feels like it’s wrapped in an Ace bandage. I looked on Amazon for the white separators you showed, but couldn’t find them. Can you give me information on how to get them? This has taken over a substantial part of my life. I’m 73 and want to be more active but this is really holding me back! (My feet are size 10 to 10 1/2 to 11 and NARROW!). For those of us who used to be ballet point dancers etc. - the conditions with your feet once you hit your 50s are remarkable and accelerated. I had no idea I had capsulitis and metatarsalgia until I was standing in my kitchen and my toe dislocated. I'm not overweight and I've always tried to find the widest athletic shoes to wear in daily life I've come to the point where I think buying men's shoes will probably serve me best because they are typically wider to start with. I've also not a lot of shoes curve up in the toe area. Which puts pressure and pain in that area as well. Thank you for all you do!

I can’t even imagine. I did gymnastics 4-6 hours a day until I broke my back and ruptured 4 disks. I have joint pain really bad in my feet. Mostly my right foot since I used it more when lifting at turning constantly on beam and floor. From that, the constant pounding and a few injuries (torn Achilles tendon, some other torn tendons and ligaments)my one foot is in constant pain all day since my 30s. In my 40s, now, it is to the point of seeing specialists about it. I can’t even imagine if the same amount of time I did in gymnastics was spent doing ballet on my toes in point shoes. It must be awful!

My bunions were hereditary as my mom noticed them when I was 5 yrs old. By 60 yrs old and standing jobs the bunions became extremely severe. I had foot surgeries in 2019 to remove the bunions, straighten hammer toes, and fuse toes at the 1st joint . The dr also shortened some toes as well. Thru all that my toes are not straight as I expected especially after having pins in all of my toes for 6 wks and a walking boot after each surgery for 12 wks.
Thanks for the toe separator idea. I'll give it a try if I can stand the pain. I still have a great deal of pain as I have arthritis in all my foot joints. Dr said I probably have neuropathy as well.
    Good luck, Brad!

@@sassysandie2865 I was very nervous about it too, probably why I waited too long. Yes, I'm very happy about having it done, as my feet were not the worst but extremely bad. I definitely waited too many years to have it done. Find a very good dr , make sure you ask all the questions you have and know what to expect. Our feet are very important, more important to the rest of our body that people don't realize. Praying you find a very good dr and you get answers you need. Good luck!

Never worn heels or tight shoes. Being a horse rider I have always worn riding boots, docs or trainers. I have MN and Metatarsalgia chronically. What I did have was crushed forefoot by being stomped on (several times)., I get a little fed up of being told it was the high heels. Sigh.

For leather shoes, check out Duck Shoes USA. For athletic shoes, try Altra or Hoka. I would not go for toe shoes or zero shoes as they lack cushion. You just need zero drop with an open toe box. You can do that with cushion. The human foot was not made for concrete. You need adequate cushion.

If it’s totally shoes that cause things like bunions, then why would one of my feet have a side bunion and the other not? Also I didn’t get a bunion until after I stopped wearing pointy shoes.

Pilates and Yamuna foot work, plus toe separators like Bob and Brad suggest. Talk to a podiatrist about insoles. You don’t want bunions to get worse, and those things help.

My feet are a total warped mess - was on "point" before 6 years old (toe shoes) with very strict teachers - one from the French Ballet, and one also from the Russian Ballet who came once a month for extensive training. Multiple foot problems but more recently the last couple of years my feet "lock up" and I can't take a step for several minutes, seems to be from the tendons on the top of my feet and the bones, even the doctors have no clue - will have to find a foot specialist. Putting my foot in an arch of any type makes things worse, if that helps in dx in any way.

had this problem with normal shoes on left foot. went away on its own. now I wear incredibly wide shoes ( altras, be lenkas) and now I have it on the right,..... not sure this is the ONLY reason you can have irritation to the joint. I think weight gain and collapsed arches can be a cause limiting space in ANY shoe....

Look at newborn feet. That splay is meant to stay our whole lives. The problem is all our shoes are not foot-shaped at all. We end up with shoe-shaped feet. Even men who live in athletic shoes or my husband who lives in Vans…their bare feet end up shoe-shaped. We need to normalize foot-shaped shoes so our feet can stay foot-shaped.
