Mold is actually a houseplant itself and should be addressed as madame and sir.
:-D :-D :-D thanks so much for watching
@@heartzzq so can breathing and microwaves and a plethora of other things
Elaina Ward so can going out and breathing fumes. White mould doesn’t harm the plant, any pets you have or any humans that breath it in. This is harmless saprophytic fungus, which isn’t harmful to humans at all.
Elaina Ward I can only guess that you maybe have a little hypochondria? My sister in law is the same but not all mould, dirt etc is bad for you. Just stay away from black mould.
@@heartzzq mold can but the stuff that grows on our plants is not really mold it's a fungus
I've seen the mold before. It's easily gotten rid of with a little cinnamon. White residue on the soil could also be calcium buildup from using an unfiltered tap water.
Agreed crusty white or tan buildup on top of soil is likely calcium or salt/mineral buildup from the tap water being used to water with. You should scrape it off to remove the problem - it's not good for your plants.
Don’t plants die when you use filtered bottled water??
I tried cinnamon and the mold came back. Any suggestions?
So I’m actually curious, should you use filtered water compared to tap water or hose water, or does it depend on the plant?
@@cherylk3479 u can't use tap water for plants????????
Funny, my teenager is studying various molds in science and recognized the fluffy white mass on my Mediterranean herb seedlings! I had no clue what she was talking about until I watched your video! Thank you so much! My wife and I were panicking because of the white mold, she recently put her plant to a bigger pot and changed the soil, she got the soil from the garden. After the white mold happened, we were researching if we needed to use some kind of fungicide. Then we saw your video and we are relieved. She did overwater the plant and that seems to be the problem. We will let it dry a bit. Thank you again for the awesome tip
So happy that this video has helped you and your wife with your plant :-D and to know that this mold is harmless :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful Tuesday XXXX
You should never use soil from your garden you should always use the potting soil most of it is sterile butt. Always if you do want to try to incorporate soil from your garden you need to put it in the oven and bake it to kill any insects or things that would harm your plants. It's a different environment outside that's why garden soil is good. Period. That is for plants growing outside in the ground that potted plants need different care
@@kathleenmurphy2379 I dig mine up and let it sit double bagged for a few weeks. Any little insects die off, and the good bacteria remains. However, that being said I have a full indoor basement garden so my soil needs are a bit dramatic 😉

I am having the same issue...I am a new gardener and I've learned that I have OVER watered my outdoor plants that are still in pots. I stopped watering once I realized what I was doing but then it seemed to rain for 3 days straight. I put them over the under hang of the house but they still got some rain. So just 3% and nothing else? Did u use thgis method and it worked? If so how long did it take to work?
@@thecprvibe9156 it works within minutes. I had black mold growth on my wall in my basement. Just 3% hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle and just drench the mold and wait 10-15 mins. Then you can just scrape it off.
I found getting a fork to aerate the soil and put less water in the pot to work just fine.
My question is is this white mold bad for the air inside the house?

Fungus & plants (Inc trees) often work together to provide each other nutrients that they can't get independently. The fungus can also connect trees so that trees share nutrients between themselves or support the younger trees. I think I first came across that in "what plants think" documentary on yt. But you can Google it too.
Only issue is, some molds do produce toxins that aren't the best to breathe in, so be sensible.
Thanks so much for sharing this info

Got some bad news for you as like any other molds around your house this mold also releases spores which are not very good for your lungs. Just get rid of it by spraying/watering a solution made with equal parts of water and Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). This will also help your plant to absorb nutrients more easily.
I have some seedlings with this growing on top (pepper plants). If I let the surface dry, it goes away (or can't see it). Comes back when I water them. Doesn't seem to be harming them at all. Good to get this confirmed.

Thank you! I was concerned, because I have gardenias that I bought with a PH problem in the soil, and they had yellow leaves as a result... So I got the PH corrected,
and was trying to be careful not to overwater it... but then I had just watered my plants when we had a rainstorm, and I was vacillating back and forth for a few minutes
as to whether I should bring the plants under the eaves to protect them or whether the soil would drain. By the time I made up my mind to bring them under the eaves,
it had already gotten the soil a bit too wet. I then had to bring them inside because they said we would have gusty winds, hail etc (which didn't show up in our area)
and it was cooler inside. So I guess the combination of the soil being a bit too wet and the cooler temps (70's) without the sun caused the mold to grow on the top of
the plants. The mold was not as white as yours, but I believe it was a common soil mold based on what you said about it. All the right combination of things that happened
was there. That makes me feel a LOT better and to worry less. I am sure now that my plants will recover. They didn't wilt, so I don't believe the overwatering got to the point
where the plant could not uptake water to it's leaves. So hopefully this situation with the yellow leaves will resolve as I keep the soil moist but not soggy, and keep the PH at
the right level. Thank you again for the video, because I sure did not need one more thing to worry about with these gardenias!
So happy that the video put your mind at ease, and I bet your gardenias will continue to thrive well, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

Thanks for the great video! I have a small container garden (vegetables) in my backyard, southern exposure, *lots* of direct sunlight, warm days and cool nights. This was 4 years ago but it’s still very helpful to me as a 15 year old who started potting inside my house also I did see the mold growing but I was paranoid so I just kept watering it and that’s most likely why mine had grown bigger it’s almost touching my plant and I was scared but than I went and watched this video and realized I’ve been overwatering it and that the soil I have chosen for my Venus fly trap is honestly really bad so I will be buying new stuff for it and stop over watering :)
Thats wonderful that the video has helped you, and when you repot your Venus fly trap its important that you use only soil that is especially for Carnivorous plants, as normal houseplant soil contains nutrients which can harm Venus flytraps, and use rainwater to water as Venus flytraps need a soil and water that is nutrient free, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

I hope your peace Lilly will be ok, its normal at this time of year to see a bit of wilting and yellowing in Winter, it should pick up now Spring is here next week, the mold itself is beneficial to the soil but can also be a sign of overwatering, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
every plant in my seed dome molded heavily, beyond fixing, mold growing on seeds as well as the starter pods, had to chuck that, but when i noticed mold in my potted plants next to the dome i removed the visible mold and then sprinkled a heavy layer of cinnamon and now letting the pots dry out, will not be watering for another two days at least.. i hope this works.. thanks for the information, im a lot less worried now, i have a track record of over watering and have had thrips, white flies, and even wild mushrooms growing in my garden . i will make sure to water less and let the soil dry more from now on.

I had it in my plant for three years and the plant was very beautiful. One day, I changed the plant to a bigger pot and it stopped and the mould never came back, might because I covered it with new soil. To be honest, this plant is not beautiful as before might be for many reasons but surely the white mould was not harmful.

My carnivorous plants have this mold on their soil. As you mentioned, it doesn't look attractive, and that's what I'm worried about. It's awkward having to explain to people that it's safe. Especially since they're people that can't keep an indoor plant alive to be able to witness this stage. As a person that has 30 plants in my office, 20 being différent species. I notice the mold with plants like pothos that require moist soil after needing water when the top soil is dry and the bottom soil 25% wet. The mold appears and then "dies" out until the next watering. What can I do to stop the mold from coming back on my carnivorous plants' soil? It's tricky because their soil always has to stay wet by keeping the base of their pots in 1/3 in of water., The this is that it's not even soil it's perlite and spagnum moss.
Hi Ricardo :-D Carnivorous plants are very prone to getting this white mold on their surface of their substrates due to them always needing to be kept moist, I find my carnivorous plants are always coming down with this mold too, I gently turn over the very top surface of their substrate with a tiny fork, this helps to keep it looking more attractive although I have to keep doing it a lot, you could try using horticultural sand on the top of the soil as this will not harm the carnivorous plants and should not dry out the soil if the plants are kept in a saucer of water but the sand on the surface should help to keep the mold down, thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comment and wishing you a fantastic plant powered weekend XXXX
My grandmother overwatered my pothos and has this fungi now. I've been drying it out (as pothos needs sometimes,) and is still doing just fine.

As someone who has no clue about succulents and is trying to learn to take care for mine, thank you for this i began to panic about this. It definitely was the overwatering because it rained more than I thought it would this winter and my succulent got super overwatered bc I kept it outside for maximum sun haha

I got a cute little deer fern a few weeks back and since it's a fern and likes the rainforest I've been watering it every few days, so it's constantly been moist. I appreciate being put at ease a little! Although I don't know if I'm watering it too much

Thank you for the video! I was a bit worried, I have some tropical seeds that I've probably been keeping a bit too moist out of worry that they might dry out and die, and the soil has started getting the white fuzzies even after treating with some fungicide. Good to know it's fine even if I can't get it to go away.
