BJJ Black Belt Struggling to Sweep 2X National Wrestling Champion

  • This BJJ rolling session was from the last no gi class I had before the quarantine. During the rolling you'll see me roll with Brandon who is a 2X NAIA college wrestling champ not to mention he's an absolute powerhouse of a human being.
    Another big bummer about this whole lock down thing is that I was looking forward to having Brandon in the gym more often since wrestling season was over. And you can see him starting to try to engage from off his back which is good. If he ever has time to stick with Brazilian Jiujitsu it's going to be scary.
    You can check out some more videos of Brandon's on his channel at: / brandon44999 or just search Brandon Reed wrestling.
    When you watch us roll you'll see us doing situational rolling. Top person works for a submission or pass and bottom person works for the sweep. I struggled with Brandon's base and balance and even if I got a sweep he quickly recovered his position. Also, I had to quickly switch from full guard, butterfly guard and half guard to try and find a position to work from.
    This is one of the most valuable reasons you should roll with wrestlers when you get the chance. They don't engage in the way Brazilian Jiu-jitsu players do and so it's a great test to see how your BJJ works against someone of a different grappling style.
    My other roll was with Stephen who is a young MMA fighter who wrestled in high school. He's super scrappy and I'm excited to see how he develops once we get back to training.
    If you're wondering at the end I tap because I was stuck in a rough neck crank and wasn't getting out. My neck was already a little funny that day so I tapped. When you roll I'd encourage you to be intelligent and do the same.
    Also if you're stuck at home and need some help with exercise, workouts or tips for preparing your BJJ for when you return.
    Visit: www.chewjitsu....
    And get my free at home training guide.
    Hope you enjoyed the video and I hope you and your family are well!
    Thanks for watching.

      It's because all they do is practice not getting pinned on their back. So, it's instinctive to naturally not go to their back and get pinned. Plus they develop great strong base.

      @Нурали Калиаскар judo and bjj are two separate things, in judo there's throws and in bjj there is ground fighting so if a judokka goes against a bjj fighter on the ground you are pretty much dead

    • @Supbishxoxo
      @Supbishxoxo 4 роки тому +14

      @Sam Johnson coming from a mma background I would have to disagree there. JUDO is very effective at getting your opponent to the ground but then what? Most of the submissions taught in Judo are easily countered by someone of the same skill in Bjj because then the fight has gone to the ground where the judo player would be basic/amateur at best. The proof is in the pudding really a black belt judo player will compete in grappling tournaments at bjj BLUE belt which proves it really. You may beat a white belt or low blue in full grappling/ground fighting but from purple up your not in the same league!

    • @Supbishxoxo
      @Supbishxoxo 4 роки тому +8

      @Нурали Калиаскар alot of people don't fully understand what they are even talking about. It's like comparing a pony to a horse. Although they are very similar and even share alot of things they are still a different art and the knuckle daggers (who probably just see belt colour) don't fully understand this as they don't even understand the sport they dictate as the best.

    He is the equivalent of a black belt in grappling, just not in BJJ. Brandon is a great grappler so there is nothing wrong with not being able to control or submit a guy like that. Just a different style and it helps us all get better training with guys like him. Kudos to all!

    This D1 NCAA wrestler came into our gym recently. The guy had a hell of a top game already. People could sweep him sometimes but no one could establish mount or side control. It took a purple belt getting him in a bunch of triangles to actually beat him. I could keep him from passing my guard but not much else. I think it was harder for him because we were training gi and I'm sure he's not used to grips.

    I started wrestling at 7. Judo on and off since 1997. Coach now at 47. I love rolling with BJJ guys. I think that training BJJ folks on takedowns, drops and throws is the most fun I've ever had as a coach or teacher.
    I cant stand the "wrestling vs bjj" debate though. Wrestlers do tend to make better jj grapplers than those who have no background in wrestling though. But it's just a different set of parameters.

    3:15 sweet escape/reversal. He does have a good base. Your sweep attempts were strong. A couple successful

      From my perspective working against someone who is heavier or stronger than you thins could land you in a crucifix or reverse triangle pretty easily :/ But if you’re as explosive as this guy it could be a good idea

      I learned that escape in high school but it wasn’t easy to pull off. With enough practice I can see where it can be quite useful.
