BJJ Black Belt Struggling to Sweep 2X National Wrestling Champion

- This BJJ rolling session was from the last no gi class I had before the quarantine. During the rolling you'll see me roll with Brandon who is a 2X NAIA college wrestling champ not to mention he's an absolute powerhouse of a human being.
Another big bummer about this whole lock down thing is that I was looking forward to having Brandon in the gym more often since wrestling season was over. And you can see him starting to try to engage from off his back which is good. If he ever has time to stick with Brazilian Jiujitsu it's going to be scary.
You can check out some more videos of Brandon's on his channel at: / brandon44999 or just search Brandon Reed wrestling.
When you watch us roll you'll see us doing situational rolling. Top person works for a submission or pass and bottom person works for the sweep. I struggled with Brandon's base and balance and even if I got a sweep he quickly recovered his position. Also, I had to quickly switch from full guard, butterfly guard and half guard to try and find a position to work from.
This is one of the most valuable reasons you should roll with wrestlers when you get the chance. They don't engage in the way Brazilian Jiu-jitsu players do and so it's a great test to see how your BJJ works against someone of a different grappling style.
My other roll was with Stephen who is a young MMA fighter who wrestled in high school. He's super scrappy and I'm excited to see how he develops once we get back to training.
If you're wondering at the end I tap because I was stuck in a rough neck crank and wasn't getting out. My neck was already a little funny that day so I tapped. When you roll I'd encourage you to be intelligent and do the same.
Also if you're stuck at home and need some help with exercise, workouts or tips for preparing your BJJ for when you return.

Hope you enjoyed the video and I hope you and your family are well!
Thanks for watching.

If you’d ever like to train with the team and I. Check out my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville,KY.
I love how the wrestler guy just refuses to give up the position
wrestling 101 lol
zelipapa84 it’s one of the reasons they’re a great test for your sweeps.
Exodus XP hard to pin but tends to give their back sometimes though
wish I had wrestled more. wrestlers always give ya a go. that's why you never look at the color of the belt.
It's because all they do is practice not getting pinned on their back. So, it's instinctive to naturally not go to their back and get pinned. Plus they develop great strong base.
Tried to scissor sweep a wrestler once. Tried other things after that.
Peter Ågren yeah it’s a bad position for wrestlers. You’re too square on them if they have a strong base.
I am glad that you have found the thing which suits your needs. I like judo as well.
@Нурали Калиаскар judo and bjj are two separate things, in judo there's throws and in bjj there is ground fighting so if a judokka goes against a bjj fighter on the ground you are pretty much dead
@Sam Johnson coming from a mma background I would have to disagree there. JUDO is very effective at getting your opponent to the ground but then what? Most of the submissions taught in Judo are easily countered by someone of the same skill in Bjj because then the fight has gone to the ground where the judo player would be basic/amateur at best. The proof is in the pudding really a black belt judo player will compete in grappling tournaments at bjj BLUE belt which proves it really. You may beat a white belt or low blue in full grappling/ground fighting but from purple up your not in the same league!
@Нурали Калиаскар alot of people don't fully understand what they are even talking about. It's like comparing a pony to a horse. Although they are very similar and even share alot of things they are still a different art and the knuckle daggers (who probably just see belt colour) don't fully understand this as they don't even understand the sport they dictate as the best.
Amazing, his core strength is off the charts you can see getting back on top is in his DNA from all that wrestling. Awesome content thanks for posting.
He is the equivalent of a black belt in grappling, just not in BJJ. Brandon is a great grappler so there is nothing wrong with not being able to control or submit a guy like that. Just a different style and it helps us all get better training with guys like him. Kudos to all!
Love Chewy's attitude and learning attitude, because most black belts would never admit this. Chewy is humble and real. OSSS!!!
Yes. The black belts who are like chewy will only improve in their art. OSS!
This comment is underrated.
This D1 NCAA wrestler came into our gym recently. The guy had a hell of a top game already. People could sweep him sometimes but no one could establish mount or side control. It took a purple belt getting him in a bunch of triangles to actually beat him. I could keep him from passing my guard but not much else. I think it was harder for him because we were training gi and I'm sure he's not used to grips.
Gotta give props to the purple belt as well. A D1 wrestler is always a challenge for every grappler from any grappling art.
Bro is prolly a monster in no gi
im losing my god damn mind without training
THIS !!!!
N a same 😂 I about cried watching this. I miss my training and team.
This.
I wanna bjj hug so bad, even if it hurts.
I hear you I just want a fight something to work for
This guy's instinctive positional awareness is incredible. Inspirational
3:20... that funk roll escape from homie... excellent.
jidase he only rolled thru an oma plata
@@jonathanwilliams1746 The moment you're talking about came before 3:20. 3:20 has the funk roll that he's talking about
That was super smooth.
Instinct for him to come out the back door when scrambling
I laughed when i saw that bro looove a good funk roll😂
As a 130 lb purple belt....I thank you for protecting me. Lmao. That guy is all yours.
Sly.AL. 😂
Lmao
Both follow strict rules
1. Dont be on your back
2. Dont give your back
3:20 is getting added to the training regimen. We're not gonna sit here and act like he didn't just get outta side control like that lol.
I was thinking the exact same thing. That one is going in my book. No reason why BJJ cant learn from wrestling if it works. I think that's the whole point anyway, isnt it?
@Jake 1 is directed at wrestling and 2 is directed at BJJ
Takes a truly humble MAN to post this. Absolutely Amazing. Beautiful watching what I just did.
He doesn’t accept the bottom position, something a lot of bjj guys lack, is that drive. Great rolls, thank you for posting them.
They make it look elegant. Weightless. They just flow. Constant change.
"Be like water, my friend."
@@tojiroh boom 👌😁
Weight less? Lol They were struggling
it's so beautiful. Did you cry before or after?
I know this kid. His name is Brandon Reed and he wrestled for Lindsey Wilson. I had the chance to drill with him. He’s a humble guy and top notch athlete.
Hey, do u think greco or freestyle is a better basic for bjj?
@@arisaadi3890 scholastic is the best style for BJJ because of the amount of time we spend on ground control and escapes. This is what makes collegiate wrestlers so tough in BJJ.
When the second guy came I thought "Why is Chewie fighting a blue belt in gi... 🤔🤔", then I realized it was not a gi but his regular clothes with a blue underwear which I mistook for a belt... 😂😂
Yeah at first I was like dang he's good for a blue belt hahaha.
Suraj Shaw that took me a while to realize!!!
With the endurance and athleticism of a national wrestling champ he would be able to use his background and unorthodox approach as a way to woop many in the field. Give him a few years and he won't be stopped...
I really love these rolling videos with the slo-mo sections. It really helps my brain grasp (at least to a higher degree) what I'm looking at
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks for the comment.
I started wrestling at 7. Judo on and off since 1997. Coach now at 47. I love rolling with BJJ guys. I think that training BJJ folks on takedowns, drops and throws is the most fun I've ever had as a coach or teacher.
I cant stand the "wrestling vs bjj" debate though. Wrestlers do tend to make better jj grapplers than those who have no background in wrestling though. But it's just a different set of parameters.
Thanks for the post Chewy.
I love as a black belt and an instructor you're not afraid to show you getting tapped it happens to all of us and even the best of us thank you for the very informative video
100%. I legit think my time away from wrestling has moved me into the “BJJ/Nogi” mindset too often. I really think a legit wrestling class with pins and points is a huge help.
See you soon as the zombies are gone and we can cuddle.
Pretty cool of chewy to post this. No ego, just a great guy loving it all!
0:21 after he reverses “they had us in the first half, not gonna lie”
xD
you won 2020
Brandons dedication in life still amazes me everyday
Never in my life would I thought two men rolling around on the ground would be so beautiful
Haha
Very composed and strong. You can tell he’s been in every position before many times. There’s no thinking about how to get out or recover... very cool to see in slow mo. Thx
Its like when you throw a cat, and he always lands ready to rock
I love how the wrestler never ever lets go of the overhook once he gets it. A good lesson learned.
Dude is solid for sure. That was awesome to watch. Thanks for posting.
Love it how the styles are so visibly different.
1:24
I love that back and forth :-)
It’s different rolling with wrestlers I like it it tests me and it’s always nice to say that you rolled with a state champ , the guy that won first in wrestling in my state NC is a blue belt in my gym
I'm a 2x outta NC. Late 200's 71st HS. Coach atta BJJ gym here in San Antonio TX. Love rolling with you guys. More fun taking you guys down though 😉
You make it look so easy. So methodical and precise yet graceful and elegant. I grind now so that I may reach this level of performance one day.
- A Struggling White Belt
Very nice grappling. Great flow where finally high level wrestling and bjj comes together.
All you guys are absolute beast! great video keep up good work!!!
Great rolling! Very smooth. Wrestlers have such great base.
Not a practitioner but an enthusiastic spectator. This was a lot of fun to watch....the fluid changes of position and leverage. I hope to some day give it a shot.
One of the big things that wrestlers always bring to the table especially after they learn the bjj basics, is their ability to scramble and embrace the grind. I've noticed a lot of jiu jitsu guys struggle with that a bit.
BTW, this music is 🔥! What song/track is this?
Great rolls. Great camera and editing, as well! I enjoyed.
3:21 bro I'm screaming crucifix at my screan
Me to after that omoplata. I thought he might figure four his legs and attack it. Marcello you know would have.
@@brendon2462 Sorry I'm not Marcelo
@@Chewjitsu I know, great roll and content. I love that shoulder crunch sweep though.
i love these rolling sessions videos
My regular training partner and I are both blue belts with about a year and a half of training. Our school is new with a lot of blue belts that have about the same experience and size as us. I do really well when rolling with pretty much everyone except my training partner. He came in 4th in states in NY when he was a senior wrestler in high school. Wrestling makes a difference.
That was super cool to watch! It's always fun watching the teachers roll! And this was pretty amazing to watch!
That guy looks like he could be really good in just a couple of years. Chewey if you're lucky you may have a Travis Stevens on your hands.
Haha he already looks really good to me!
Martial Life he’s a beast man. Still has more college wrestling though.
I agree. I wrestled in junior high and high school and I was animal strong but never looked as good as this dude.
He is really good wrestling is better sheesh
@@Chewjitsu who is this guy? What college, division?
Really enjoyed watching this. What a beast that wrestler is and you both had some really good moments. You can tell you are both trying new things, being creative and having fun. Can’t wait for all this to be over so we can all get back to training
I love rolling with wrestlers. They are always so tough and a lot of fun.
What a monster! Good rolls.
brandon is an entire army
Wrestling trains you to not give up top position which is a big reason why it works so well in mma.. this was dope.
This was very entertaining. Really cool style matchup, and genuinely great production quality.
One thing I love about this video is that there is no egos just training, learning and respect
Your rolling edits are always so sick Nick ! Keep it up 👍👍
Your sweep set ups are on point
I love when both show respect each martial art
The reversal after the omaplata sweep was super funky. That dude is awesome.
He's a super fun roll.
Great techniques great flow rolling you get to learn a lot doing that. Going all out all the time not always fun.
Heck yea. Grade A rolls. The wrestler looks like a tough puzzle to solve for someone like me who hasn't rolled against too many wrestlers. I always enjoy your answers to these scenarios!
It's a fun puzzle and a great test for your sweeps. Thanks for the comment Dallas.
4:07-4:20 the dude with the red shirt in the background. Smooth af
Oh yea bro he snapped
Isnt that Chad?
He’s clearly going against a newbie
I really loved watching this. Missing this alot
Wow man this is awesome to watch like i said before this is why i love bjj. High level rolling 🙏Thanks bro
I wish I could train. But honestly I just want it to be over. This morning a nurse friend of mine got his test results back ... He's positive. Let's hope for the best.
Daniel Oh same . Keep in mind this is from before the quarantine.
Daniel Oh they’ll be fine. This thing has like a less than 1% fatality rate. People need to calm the fuck down, Jesus Christ

Sight your source. I call BS on the “ high prevalence” we don’t have enough information in a few months to make that claim, hell we don’t even know how prevalent it is. Stop the fear mongering.
joebeast15 -
Exactly, healthy people have little to nothing to fear from this. The biggest risk is spreading it to an elderly parent or someone at high risk ( depressed immune system for example). Hell, you’ve probably already have been exposed and just don’t know.
Chuck Noob I’m actually fairly certain I already had it. Was pretty sick in late January into early February. Had a lot of acute bronchitis symptoms, etc. it sucked but was it bad enough that I’d advocate abdicating our civil liberties, burning the bill of rights, giving unfettered power to the government, and crashing our economy? Hell no. I’m sorry but if I have to choose between that and your mee maw getting sick then you aren’t going to like my answer.
That was such good work! Got me hyped great all three of y’all!
Taj Peterson happy to do so!
That was an awesome roll series. So.fun to watch.
Nice! I love rolling with high level wrestlers like that.
Beautiful rolls!
Beautiful seamless art
Damn, he recovers so fast
What is great is that Chewie and this monster can both roll at an easy pace and nobody gets INJURED !! Both can roll in a control way. You put 2 white belts again ( who are agressive) and one gets injured .
Thanks for sharing. Extremely needed
Love this channel, that dude was so strong
Love these style of videos chewey hope your safe bro
Whoever disliked this video is just a insecure jealous human.
😂
Absolutely
It was your mother
Two amazing talents......soooooooo good!!!!!!! Loved it!
What a beautiful roll
Damn he did the funk wrestling side control escape at 3:20! Love it!
That shit was clean never seen that before....in that situation most ppl would just shrimp away
3:15 sweet escape/reversal. He does have a good base. Your sweep attempts were strong. A couple successful
funk roll
@@raiderspheresportstalkshow1926 that's right! Thanks
The beat was nice! I haven't rolled for 2 years, this makes me want to get back into it.
any chance you can do a video on the escape brandon used at 3:20?
Kieran O'Halloran came here to say the same thing, so clean
Known as a funk roll in wrestling.
Bjj scout has a good video about it
From my perspective working against someone who is heavier or stronger than you thins could land you in a crucifix or reverse triangle pretty easily :/ But if you’re as explosive as this guy it could be a good idea
I learned that escape in high school but it wasn’t easy to pull off. With enough practice I can see where it can be quite useful.
Awesome session 🙏🏼 Thanks for sharing!
editing is top-notch
3:20 very slick. I'm copying this one.
It requires immense strength, another reason steroids work so well for Jiujitsu.
@@badatcreatingrochellecryst6719 Nah, that's a technical move same as ghost escape.
Yo, I just love the scramble between both of them, don't just let people do what they want, make them work for it.
Really enjoyed watching that, love the flow 🙏👌😬
This is why I want to learn wrestling and bjj so bad
I NEED TO ROLL!
Love your butterfly guard! You are so good!
3:10 slick ass escape
You allmost nailed it brother with my favorite Dummy sweep 😊🤙👍🏻
Brandon Reed future ADCC Champ?
ok thats freekin awesome. you got him a few times but its like his back is rubber. soon as he hit the mat he bounces, great to watch cheers
I watched the flow at 3:15 about 10 times. That was a really interesting way out of side control.
You were successful at times to pin him down but you’re right, it’s difficult to take down a 2 time national wrestler. Thank you for sharing the video.
Good hard work. I miss the gym so much
Great rolls
Wresting will always be the best base for MMA
Great song great edits dude!!
that half guard sweep s bliss...
Telling you man wrestling make the best jj artists.
This almost brought me to tears. I didn't realize how much I was missing grappling...
Very nice! Thank you for sharing the video.
