So glad you can enjoy some Steely Dan! 70s music, often characterized by slow song buildups. Sometimes complex lyrics, complex intros or outros, long wandering melodies. Usually less repetitive than current pop music, though not always.
The story about this song is an older guy on his way to a 3-Way with younger girls. Donald seems to be saying that the reality of a Me'nage a' Trois doesn't match up to the hype, or that he just couldn't perform to the level required?
Think it's sorta both. If you make that kind of thing a habit, you're definitely playing with fire. It's that 'cotton candy': pretty, delicate, too sweet to last forever
"Don't you know what it means to become an orgy guy? It changes everything. I'd have to dress different. I'd have to act different. I'd have to grow a moustache and get all kinds of robes and lotions...." ~Seinfeld

Gotta love them drums with the Purdie shuffle! There's a whole video out there on that alone. Definitely worth watching. Also, the backup singers really deserve a hand on this one. Well done. Hope you'll consider "My Rival" next. Steely Ben's done a video to it.
Gotta love that horn section, accent with out changing the focus of the music. The harmony is transcendent. SD's music of crime and the underside of society and the great moral facade that is who we really are, awe inspiring.
I was gonna recommend Babylon Sisters a few weeks back after I saw the "Peg" reaction, But, I figured somebody would eventually get around to it. My very first CD I bought for my very first CD player, back in 1986, was a Steely Dan CD. I love'em that much!
As I was listening to this piece I noticed the drummer was occasionally playing the Purdie Shuffle. I got curious and looked it up and sure enough Bernard Purdie played on this recording. The man himself the shuffle was named after.
Glad you were digging one of my favorite songs by the Dan! FYI yes it really is "sisters" plural - the singers on the recording are just sliding that final s on the end of "sisters" into the start of "shake it" -- it's a standard singers' technique when you want a really smooth line, I was schooled in it by several choir directors :-D ... If you want to see Don and Walt do this one live with a really tight fabulous band, check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/JMVKAOyTUe4/v-deo.html ... carry on, man!
Yay Jamal! What a blast to watch & listen to w/ you, a favorite of mine, smooth as melted butter. Watching your face @ end, just when song is on the fade out, you get wave of fresh "you've got to shake it babies"-LOL- wonderful to see sweet surprise on your smiling face! Thank you, again, so much, for spending the time & opening the mind, experiencing other genres, offering genuine emotion, solemn respect & infectious curiosity for this music. Many of us, like myself, grew up w/a lot of this, took for granted it's only a radio dial away & slowly drifted away from my roots. Listening w/you, brought me back to basics, w/newfound respect, awe in some cases (the very young ages of Gregg Allman, along w/ Led Zeppelin, these guys blow doors off absolutely anyone today musically @ same age, hell, most musicians entire career can't do what Led Zeppelin did on debut album). I promised Led Zeppelin that if they forgave me for leaving, that I'd never, never, never gonna leave you, never leave you when the summer comes along

Im glad you review Steely Dan man. They took so much pride in their music. Youll get a kick out of how they got their band name if you care to figure it out lol.
Actually it sounds like Purdue but it's really a drum machine. They built it for this album and that's why it took so long for this album to come out. I believe the drum machine actually won a Grammy. I think it's name was Melvin. It was a groundbreaking piece of technology at the time.
@@lorenzobaines6222 The Wendel drum machine (the first ever drum machine!) was built by engineer Roger Nichols during the middle of recording of the album. Therefore some of the songs like this one, Gaucho, and Third World Man (which was actually a leftover from the Aja sessions) are 100% natural drums. Other songs like Hey Nineteen, Glamour Profession, Time Out Of Mind, and My Rival have the Wendel drum replacement machine in place, where they took the drum grooves played by a real drummer and replaced the sounds with samples to make every snare hit sound identical and fix tiny timing mistakes, etc.

I'd have to grow a moustache and get all kinds of robes and lotions...."
~Seinfeld
Scrolling through the comments I finally found someone who explains this to Jamel. He couldn't understand sisters not sister! It must be his clean lifestyle!!
This is the Steely Danverse, anything good is followed by crushing existential depression
@@brianm6530 He's just playin' cool I bet, I seen the way he looks over his glasses sometimes LOL
Man, I really enjoy your videos, especially the Steely Dan reactions. I've been a fan of theirs for many years and to see you react allows me to react to them again and I thank you for that.
Be cool, man and keep going.
Gotta love them drums with the Purdie shuffle! There's a whole video out there on that alone. Definitely worth watching. Also, the backup singers really deserve a hand on this one. Well done. Hope you'll consider "My Rival" next. Steely Ben's done a video to it.
And we told you about this song for like a year, Jamel/Jamal. I love seeing it at last. Peace and be safe. You are a treasure to me.
Whoooo hooooooo Steely Dan baby!!!!! I knew you'd like Babylon Sisters! That song is outrageous live! I hate the Santa Ana's too.
Steely Dan with a Slow Mo but steady forward thrusting rhythm, and as always super precise musicians. You are making a good revival show!
the song's title is Babylon Sisters, the guy doing the video was correct with the title.
Yep....and song is about him going to a 3-way hook-up. Noticed that Steely Ben shows 3 dancers in the video. 😂😂😂😂
@@darlenedejohnette5180 love’s not a game for three
As I was listening to this piece I noticed the drummer was occasionally playing the Purdie Shuffle.
Welcome to the Steely Dan club. I'm 69 now and still listen to the Dan every day
How in the World can anyone not LOVE " Steely Dan" This Music is like fine wine , it gets better with age ... VIVE S.D.
Wait until you hear "The Royal Scam" title track from that album.
Wrong album - this was from Gaucho.
@@murraywestenskow2896 I did say title track from "That" album, meaning The Royal Scam Album, yes this is obviously Gaucho. I just wanted to clarify that the album has a song with the same name. I am sure He can figure it out
@@michaelyork4554 good taste-- I am a 100% Dan fanatic, but the Royal Scam album is my fav out of sooo many good ones!!!
The whole album is MURDER!
Kirschwasser is a very delicate and refined tasting cherry brandy. It is German for cherry water and is derived from morello cherries. There are many uses for this alcohol including filling chocolates, in Swiss cheese fondue, and of course for drinking.
"ANY MAJOR DUDE WILL TELL YOU".......Please!!!!
Quite a short track but one of the best, with great guitar solo. i hope he plays it as well Nick.
LOVE that track!
Love Any Major Dude
That's flat out one of Steely Dan's best. And man, they got a loooot of top shit.
yep one of their very best
I was grilling steaks and listening to the Gaucho album at about the exact same time this video dropped on YT....LOL!!! Great minds brother!
I remember pulling the plastic off this one and hearing it for the first time...it took so long to come out. Felt like we'd been holding our breath for years. And this was the first tune. We were going off like Jamel.
My favorite Steely Dan song. This band was made for headphones.
Contrary....SD is best when played on a real hifi system.
Hell yes!!! You kick ass, Jamel AKA Jamal. Thank you for doing what your doing. Very entertaining.
My man, I love Steely Dan, I'm 61 years old and when I was in high school I was turned on to them. We used to play basketball and afterward chill out by getting high and putting Steely Dan on and man oh man. They are one of my favorite bands, some of the best music, loved your reaction.
Making a request for a reaction for Steely Dan "Gaucho". More SD magic.
That whole album is straight through for me. My fav.
Yes, please. On Gaucho, the backing choir is quite spectacular
That song actually helped me get a final Jeopardy question about Argentinian cowboys. Thanks Steely Dan!
You wanna know how much I love "Gaucho"? I flew from California to NYC for Gaucho Night during their 10-night residency at the Beacon Theatre. I thought drummer Keith Carlock did a fantastic job interpreting Jeff Porcaro's immortal drum track. My heart was full after hearing Gaucho in 2016.
Who is your gaucho amigo?
Im glad you review Steely Dan man. They took so much pride in their music. Youll get a kick out of how they got their band name if you care to figure it out lol.
That's that "Purdie Shuffle"
Yes yes yes that Purdie Shuffle on the drums!
Yes it is
Actually it sounds like Purdue but it's really a drum machine. They built it for this album and that's why it took so long for this album to come out. I believe the drum machine actually won a Grammy. I think it's name was Melvin. It was a groundbreaking piece of technology at the time.
Lorenzo Baines Perdie plays on the album. But wendell was the drum machine. Not used on every song
My favorite reaction channel! I love when you felt that groove and said "shiiiiiiet" lol. That's something I would say!
I’d like to see you react to Golden Earring. “Radar Love” and “Twilight Zone.”
YES! YES! YES! 🔥🔥🔥
TheTruthIsRacist I’m only familiar with the two, but it doesn’t surprise me that they have more good ones.
Easily two of the greatest rock songs of all time. Same band 10 years apart.
Love watching your reaction to "The Dan of Steel"! Have you ever covered any of the songs from Donald Fagen's (half of the Steely Dan duo) first solo album The Nightfly? Check out the title track and New Frontier. Fagen uses some of the world's best studio musicians! Great stuff! Thanks again!!
Yes! Love that you got around to reacting to this. Can't wait for when you do Gaucho, with the beautiful Jeff Porcaro on drums (the guy who played Lido Shuffle, Lowdown, FM, Africa, Rosanna plus a whole lot of other tunes you've reacted to).
Bruh, welcome. Steely Dan is tight!!! Been listening to them for literally decades now. Even saw them in concert. Killed it!
The Background Vocals are amazing!! And you have an All-star Horn section!!
"Hold on. Drink WHAT?!?!" LOLOL I've been wondering that for 40 years....
Introduced this song to my daughters over 30 years ago and we still sing it together as loud as we can, brings back great memories. Thank you and enjoy!!!
Sweet dude glad you're digging into a little of the old school fusion jazz rock and roll. I saw these guys 2 times in the eighties to the best shows I've ever seen other than Led Zeppelin
Wrong decade, my friend. Steely Dan did not perform live in the 80's. Steely Dan took that decade off, didn't return to live performances 'til the 90's
Then 79. Dude!!. Stop being the police. Steely Dan got together in 1967. Don't try to police people dude! just enjoy jthe music. And I love young people's reaction to music that I've seen before. So get a life
@@brianwhitney5441 well said.... Boom!💯
@@cd1857 You might want to let the fact that Steely Dan didn't form until 1972, or that they stopped touring in 1974 slide, officer.

I should have been jaming this right here.
And on drums, the great Bernard “Pretty” Purdie. You may remember him from Home At Last.
Did he already do Home at Last?
saw them just before Walter Becker passed away, and yes, it was a total groove live. and the backup singers, with the grooovin hips back and forth and the sweet harmonies.... sweet. keep on groovin my man...
Hey, Jamel. Would you mind doing a “reaction” video to, “Steely’s, “Glamour Profession”? It’s also on the Goucho, album.
glamour profession and third world man! the 2 best songs on gaucho, in my opinion.
I agree!
That's a definite thumbs up 👍

steve arnold thanks for adding the link to the song!!
You are amazing! Your reaction is so wonderful! You remind me why true music fans all over the world have been loving this song and album for decades.
They sure do know how to create a groove.
Just so you know. That drum groove you are hearing is from Bernard Purdie. It's his signature groove , called the "Purdie shuffle".
I was hoping you’d listen to this one! Definitely one of the best jams.
Loving the reactions as alway Jamal. The groove is the fabulous "Purdie Shuffle". You need to treat your ears as Bernard was also on Kid Charlemane... Go on give it a listen. You know you want to..
Take care.
Oh my gosh I have heard this song the last 30 years.. my dad was a huge steely dan fan.. never til tonight realized they were singing about hookers! This video gave me such a great laugh.. love your reactions to steely dan especially! Glad you have an appreciation for the music I grew up with.. I was an 80s kid but grew up on 70s music from my parents 😁
Any man that can love Steely Dan as much as you do has my full respect.
