Dec.28th: Happy birthday jazz Pianist-Bandleader Earl Kennedy "Fatha" Hines (1903-1983) Grammy Hall of Fame inductee. Thank you and God bless. RIP. Thanks for the upload, bessjazz. Blessings
Many people don’t realise that in fact It was Earl Hines who was actually Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five & Hot Seven musical director (as well, of course, as his accompanist) on ‘Weatherbird’ and the other Armstrong/Hines jazz classics of the time - almost 100 years ago now!
TEDDY WILSON e sua admirável simplicidade e classe, ao lado de HINES, o mestre do "stride", com uma lição do melhor do JAZZ-piano - uma delícia para os sentidos ! ! !
I definitely can't either and most likely never will, but after all, Hines was the one that both Teddy Wilson and Art Tatum themselves admired more than any other. Count Basie - a close personal friend to Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson, no less - claimed that Hines was the greatest jazz pianist he has ever heard and Erroll Garner is on record saying that his gods were Earl Hines and Art Tatum (in that order!). So there is no shame in being a lesser pianist than Master Earl.
Earl Hines has always been one of my favourite pianists and it's a shame that he is somewhat forgotten today. Yes his trademark hysterical playing style, served with a technical virtuosity comparable to Art Tatum's and Oscar Peterson's, remains immediately recognisable among a million.
Earl simply slides on the keys. He never finishes the phrases. His fingers flying on the keys like a butterfly. Greatest, virtuoso pianist in jazz history
Teddy Wilson looks like an apprentice against Earl Hines. His notes hardly sound and he constantly looks on the keyboard not to make mistake. Very funny! It's like Goliath and Dwarf
When you realize that they're playing these complicated tunes from memory...O-O
Two masters. Thank you for this historic masterpiece. 🙂

... hope you've found the Hines docu on Vimeo, Jacob? On of the VERY greatest jazz docus ever made.
He's my godfather.
I don't think he is forgotten at all, still mentioned as a pioneer of jazz piano (sometimes even as "the father of jazz piano")
Earl Hines is the most original and creative pianist ever
