“Judy Garland” the so-called legend has become just that, she has almost obliterated the woman (Frances Gumm) behind the persona. Her childhood and most of her adulthood was traumatic due to complex reasons; including (but not limited to), cultural, historical, personal and financial issues. Some were out of her control, others she lacked the discipline to harness or deal with in a mature and rational way. She struggled with addiction to prescription medication, usually doled out to her by inept and unscrupulous doctors. Back then addiction wasn’t understood as well as it is today; there weren’t specialists or clinics to help patients with this specific problem. I think Frances' biggest issue was that she seemed to attract men who were corrupt or abusers. Was that her fault? Of course not. But I so wish she had the strength of character to detect such shady characters before she got involved with them. She was cheated out of money as well as manipulated emotionally. She was a complex woman and extremely vulnerable. It is a shame she is sometimes seen as a tragic figure who gave in to her addiction. However, I recognise in her resilience and bravery, as well as a strength to keep going. But her body gave up in the end. There doesn’t have to be a moral to every story or every person's existence, but I believe that what’s left to reflect on is Frances' immense legacy, which was her talent and admirable spirit. That, if nothing else, must be celebrated in her honor, in my opinion.

It wasn’t that her substance abused was bad. It was that the Director would dead ass wait to get to her until the end of the day. He would make actresses do the scenes over and over again and he just picked on Judy and Judy knew that. The actor Patty Duke was literally playing her. The Director treated her horribly, but Judy got back by stealing some of the costumes, and then wearing them on her own performances. and he will wait all day to basically shoot her scenes, knowing that she had a substance abuse problem so when they got to Judy she be either high or drunk.

The costumes were gifted to Judy by the dress designer, who knew how much publicity the dress would bring (which was correct as she wore it in her concert tours thereafter).

Why are you showing clips of her from A Star Is Born and referencing the debacle that was Valley of the Dolls? And a debacle NOT of Judy’s making. Let her rest in peace. Her art speaks for itself.

Her substance abuse disorder was created, delivered, required, and administered by the entertainment industry higher-ups. A human body cannot be given everything she was given day in and out and not get used to or addicted to it. It's a very sad story that Judy died at the young age of 47 and that she could've lived a much happier and longer life had they simply allowed her to be a human. Her voice is unparalleled to this day!

Uses a shot from A Star is Born and says she was fired from this film. You have to click on it to see that she was fired in Valley of the Dolls. This is a disgusting post.

Shows one clip of Susan Hayward then cuts to A Star Is Born, perhaps her greatest triumph!

I heard it was exactly the opposite. It’s easy for people to point their finger at someone that’s not here to defend themselves.
I heard, paraphrased, that she did what she did, to get kicked off the production after she read the script. She didn’t want people saying that’s what Dorothy ended up doing later in life just for a part in a movie.
    I agree with her.

And not by her choice. She was put on that path by the powers that be. People love to create a mess and then just turn the other way and act as if they played no part in it.
