Agreed. He makes it look effortless. Yes, there is a little (excellent) layering in the video. Is his performance any less impressive on his vocal plathroughs? Nope, even more so.

About the lyrics: I listen to harsh vocals like they’re another instrument on initial listens of songs, later I look up the lyrics and it adds another layer when listening again.
Absolutely! I usually hear the vocals first as a beat in the mix. I usually don’t pay mind to the actual words unless the music has done its part for me. Then I will go back and focus on lyrics. It’s a total experience and dissection of the overall art and it’s the process of processing that makes me love heavier music. There are so many layers that you can discover and rediscover over and over in each song. It’s very complex and love it
On initial listen 100% agree, its more like a extra melody or instrument. But i dont rly look up the lyrics. I just "make my own lyrics" if that makes anysense 😂
Exactly. I remember Enslaved talking about how the vocals were used first and foremost as an instrument and I expect many many bands approach it the same way. And it works.

Go check out The Charismatic Voice, Elizabeth has several videos with Will including her famous throat camera video where she actually put a camera down Will's throat and showed how the vocal folds acted with different forms of his harsh vocals.
I heard a pretty interesting analogy in terms of why metalheads have zero issue not being able to understand the lyrics or veery loosely follow along : "When we hear a singer performing in another language than our own, we tend to not really care as much about understanding the words at that moment but rather try to understand the passion in the voice and the technique. In the same sense, we try to do the same with harsh vocals. We might not be able to understand the lyrics well, but goddamn are the vocal techniques that keep getting either invented or put a spin on is fascinating, and the passion behind what they do." Another quote I liked, came across it not too long ago : If we have genres of music like we do movies, why can't there be a horror genre? That's what the really heavy metal portrays to me. You have singers that sound like goblins, zombies, demons, eldritch abominations. Sounds like horror to me"

You absolutely get adjusted to the sound of these types of growls with exposure. You start to pick up certain consonant sounds and can dissect the lyrics from them easily enough. Something like Periphery would be a great addition to your channel.

So great to have a genuine, and insightful reaction to this track and not just people pulling faces. Great stuff! Really appreciated you breaking down various elements; not just the vocals.
Thanks! Will has also made a one take vocal performance of this very song, where you can see his face making all the sounds clearly and witness how he does not need fancy editing and layering to be a beast. For reactions I might suggest Will Ramos doing vocal cover of Sleep Token: Chokehold. There you can hear his gorgeous cleans and get an idea about what his singing voice sounds like. Some screams, too, to showcase the smooth transitions. When it comes to metal lyrics, the long standing tradition has been to sit down with a new album with lyrics leaflet in your hand for couple of first listens so you learn to follow the lyrics. This was done already on era with lot less distorted lyrics, and it still works.
It seems to me the very best screamers tend to have very good clean singing capabilities, too. It might be related to the fact that to do dirty vocals on very high level you have to have really solid breath support and knowledge about how to manipulate the vocal tract. Which then lays a foundation for interesting cleans, too.
I third this. @PeterBarber - please take this comment plus lots of other good info in the comments section into account and react to more of Will - would love to see it!
His cover of chokehold is super clean, and was like wow will actually CAN sing 🤣🤣 all his one takes too show off his abilities super well. His pain remains trilogy of like a deathcore ballot
I can never get enough of these reaction videos of extreme metal and harsh vocals. Both because of the shock factor and because of how interesting it is to hear someone trying to explain how they are made. For me regarding listening to music I kind of rarely listen to the lyrics, or even look them up. I know I often miss out a lot but I've always just accepted the vocals as "just" another instrument. I remember once when I looked up the lyrics to a metal song I got disappointed and since then I've kind of avoided it. I most likely have a bunch of diagnoses, whereas ADHD is one of them, so I easily get overload if there's too many impressions. Most people gets over exited by this kind of music but for me it's kind of more relaxing, I know it sounds odd but the only way I can explain it is that it must be a combination of my ADHD and that I have blood type A that naturally has a higher level of cortisol, which is a stress hormone. I work my best when I can have a wall of sound around me, so I can focus on what I want to do. That's when I thrive! Something else I've noticed with myself is that I am drawn to music with odd time signatures and seemingly irregular tempo. I don't know why. You are totally right about the drummer (all of the band members are of course very talented). But check out one of the videos where he plays one of their songs on Meinl cymbals. He is not even having his eyes open during the fastest parts, but when he plays the slow parts he does. This video perfectly shows that with the commentary of another drummer: ua-cam.com/video/E0Tf0fb2tD0/v-deo.htmlsi=aoDbCxPXJI9MD2b0 Btw, this is Symphonic Deathcore so you are right about the strings other than guitars. I am also impressed that you got deathcore right, because many don't. A hallmark for deathcore music is the breakdowns. Another band that is starting to get more attention, and rightfully so is Mental Cruelty. The music videos for Lorna Shore and Mental Cruelty's videos are directed by the same dude so you'll see some similarities. I'd totally love to see you, Elizabeth and Will do a reaction together to one of Mental Cruelty's songs from the last album Zwielicht. Even tough I love Will Ramos and Lorna Shore, I am a bit more infatuated in Mental Cruelty because they are taking a bit darker approach since they with the last album started to implement black metal to their music. So it's now Symphonic Blackened Deathcore. I guess some of the reason for why I like them so much, besides the before mentioned, is that I have my roots in Germany but I am from Sweden. Btw, you do know there is a harsh vocalist that also is named Barber right? Tom Barber, an obvious check out!
After your video for Alex and Slaughter to Prevail, I was wondering how long it would take for you to look into Will and Lorna Shore. Excited about this one!
26:14 Kudos to Peter and Editor for making the small audio direction switch up while Peter is explaining Stereoscopic Image. Very nice touch and one that I don't think very many people would take the time to do, so very nice work and thank you!
Even if it's on your own time, check out the one take playthrough of this song from Will. It's on his YT channel. It's crazy to see how casual and relaxed he is when doing these crazy harsh vocals. He also has done vocal playthroughs with clean singing as well. I recommend his cover of Sleep Token's "Hypnosis" for that.
I don’t know which is better, this analysis or learning that Will is casually going to Opera shows 😅. His cleans absolutely took me when I first heard Hypnosis. I believe that came out shortly after this beast of a song, and I couldn't process the fact that they were the same person.
check out Into The Earth. I think that songs breakdowns showcase how filthy Will's lows really are. and of course the emotional ride of the Pain Remains trilogy.
Omg I'm so glad you see that similarity between kpop and metal! My 2 fav genres lol most people think they couldn't be more opposite but ive always thought they had similarities with the like organized chaos and huge sound switches and stuff.
You mentioned the drums a few times in the video. I really recommend checking out Austin Archey’s drum playthroughs. I suggest Cursed to Die and Into the Earth.
As it seems you really like the drumming, you should check out the drum playthroughs by both Lorna shore and slaughter to prevail! Just insane to see how fast they play
Is the Will Ramos -> Sleep Tokan pipeline about to happen to Peter as well?? Hahaha great reaction If you want to hear Will’s singing voice, either of his Sleep Token covers are great. He stays true to the originals, with some added Will flair lol. Also, Sleep Token is another band that has crazy transitions section to section sometimes. They’re well known for being whatever genre they want to be and it’s always fun seeing people react to them for the first time. The Summoning and Take Me Back To Eden seem to be a lot of people’s starting points. If you like soulful vocals, you could do something like Bloodsport (from the room below) which is just Vessel (the singer) and piano, or maybe The Apparition or Rain which are two of my favorites right now. Lots to choose from but The Summoning and TMBTE are good introductions to their sound and Bloodsport is great for hearing the emotion he can get out of his voice. Rain is just a fun song to try to sing along to for me, with some vocal range in it.
Will ❤ Saw them live last summer, they're great live too. 1 checked out from bucket list 😂 Tell me, have you seen a video where Elisabeth (Charismatic Voice) puts a camera in Will's throat and he does all his "sounds"? And if you're interested in different growls/growlers, you should check out Tomi Joutsen (Amorphis). There is a voice I would happily wake up to 😊 "The Bee" is nice or "Dark Waters". 2-in-1 would be "Amongst Stars" (with Anneke van Giersbergen)
My absolute favorite part of watching reactions to this song is watching the facial expressions to the pig noises. In addition to horror movies, I think harsh vocalists would also be amazing at video game vocals.
When I was first getting into metal, i started with the ole death metal, and when i could understand cannibal corpse, everything became easier to understand. That said, I love Will's vocals because when you're a bit familiar, you can understand everything. Same with Tatiana with Jinjer. They both really focus on enunciation especially in their growls so that their lyrics are heard and understood. Love your reaction!
I was watching your analysis and breakdown on Gigi's cover of Unholy, you mentioned that you like dark gritty stuff so here's a new rabbit hole for you to dive into-Ado. I reccomend going for 1) Usseewa 2) Unravel 3) Crime and Punishment 4) Tot Musica Any of those. Your videos are amazing, as always.
28:00 the only parallel with Hollywood are voice actors like Dee Bradley Baker who do A LOT of animal/creature/monster work for animation and video games. Worth checking out for sure because the talent is just as crazy. You've probably seen about 20 things Dee Bradley Baker has done voice work on without knowing it.
wasn't expecting a dee bradley baker mention on this side of youtube! I mainly know him from clone wars and tbb so I knew he has a pretty versatile voice (being able to voice all of the bad batch except omega) but I didn't know he does animal and monster sounds too, that's pretty cool
This song was my introduction to the Death Metal scene, and I was definitely expecting you to be very shocked when you started listening to this 😆. It's not an easy song to listen to because we can't hear the lyrics very well, and there's a LOT going on instrumentally, but I think that's what is making Lorna Shore stand out among the other death metal bands. Elizabeth and Will had said that he uses his false vocal cords to create the sounds that he uses while singing, and that he does it healthily with very little formal training (I think?? It's been a while since I've seen those videos), is a very rare talent among singers who use harsh vocal techniques. Thanks for taking the time to create and post this video Peter!! Greatly appreciate it!
Great reaction. There's a video of Nick Nocturnal and Will in which Will was listening to some "singing" clips and had to guess if it was an animal or a human. This might be fun for you to check out and guess along. Greetings from Germany
So I’m sure people have mentioned but there is also a one take playthrough which is much rawer, amazing! Then he also does a full analysis of the one take playthrough. I’m sure you’d love all of that!
THANK YOU for drawing that comparison to Deathcore and Kpop. I have been listening to both genres a LOT for over a decade, and I could never figure out what it was about the two genres that I liked so much. I chalked it up to both having "hard to understand lyrics" because that brings a lot of texture to the ears that you dont really get from any other genres. However as time went on and both got easier for me to understand as I learned/ got familiar with them, but there was still what felt like magic that was never lost to me. Once you said that I felt like I finally understood why my love for both was so strong and unmatched by other genres (which I do enjoy other music, but they are easily my top two) and now I can actually explain to other people what it is.
You mentioned percussion. Lorna Shore's drummer, Austin Archey, also has one take playthroughs. He looks like he is in a place of perfect Zen, while destroying with technical perfection.
As to your comment about wanting to hear Will's clean, I would highly recommend Will's vocal cover of "Chokehold" by Sleep Token. He actually has beautiful cleans and really shows more of his range in that song and it's a quality cover. Edit: that left ear right ear sound edit you did at the end when you were talking about it was trippy and I approve.
16:58: it's even more impressive than that. Because double kicks doesn't mean that every time you hit it happens twice, it just means that you have a second pedal so you can use both of your feet, which is really hard to control specially at those speeds, and it's already pretty damn hard to get there in the first place
It's not just the speed that's impressive (though it definitely is), it's also the precision that blows me away. When I attempt to drum on stuff with my hands and feet I quickly get sloppy and tired, whereas these drummers continue to sound like a fucking machine gun while staying perfectly on beat (to my untrained ears, anyways).
@@darmakx99 Yeah, that's what I meant by hard to control. I started learning double bass drum recently and I can get to 140bpm, but even if I have the speed to go faster I just can't stay on beat. Bear in mind, though, that these drummers aren't perfect all the time and almost always the studio versions are quantised. Still, I don't think it's the case with Austin, because in the videos he recorded with Meinl you can tell it's not quantised when he plays fills, but his feet are still extremely precise. Edit: I forgot to mention that the techinique Austin uses (heel toe) is really hard to nail at SLOWER speeds, yet he does it seamlessly. Just goes to show how much control he has.
Funny thing about your comment toward the end about deathcore vocalists being picked up by producers for horror movie sound effects, Dickie Allen from Infant Annihilator said that he was originally training to be a monster/creature voice actor before he became a deathcore vocalist.
When you listen to metal for years it eventually becomes clear as to what they're saying and bands are like brands of metal, you find your favorite and get invested in that band. So you end up learning the lyrics through the internet and sometimes the lyrics come with the album.
Will actually doesn't multi-track his vocals, he's learned to activate different sound sources simultaneously so that layered sound can actually be made live! Mind blowing talent
"another genre that does this is K-Pop" The most music I listened to the past 2 years explained in one sentence. I actually listen to dozens of genres but for some reason the last almost 2 1/2 year were Hardcore/Metalcore/... and K-Pop.
Always fun to see reactions! Will is incredibly talented. Not only does he have a huge range in scale and technique for harsh vocals, but he can sing beautifully as well! Check out his vocal cover of Sleep Token- Rain, it's amazing!
As both an opera & metal enthusiast, I approach the music the same way.... for me it's always about the sound first. I've grown up going to the symphony & opera, so I'm used to purely instrumental music or not understanding lyrics because they're in another language... vocals are another instrument, so I always appreciate them in a musical context first. Even when I'm listening to rap or hip-hop for the first time I'm listening to the rhythm, melody & syncopation of the words rather than the lyrics themselves. So I usually don't look for lyrics until I've listened to a track a few times, and having experienced the emotions conveyed musically the lyrics just add an extra dimension to it.
Hey what a nice reaction you did, I think is my fav from this song. One thing that I surely know that you know Jajaj is that the era that will can go so low is with tongue colocaron just like the monk voice 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

This video perfectly shows that with the commentary of another drummer: ua-cam.com/video/E0Tf0fb2tD0/v-deo.htmlsi=aoDbCxPXJI9MD2b0
Btw, this is Symphonic Deathcore so you are right about the strings other than guitars.
You definitely become accustomed to the style of singing where you start understanding it faster the more you listen to this type of music
After your video for Alex and Slaughter to Prevail, I was wondering how long it would take for you to look into Will and Lorna Shore. Excited about this one!
Will and Alex have really opened a lot of people’s eyes to harsher metal genres. So good to see!
This is great! Can't wait for the: "human scream or animal noise?" gameshow 😂😅🤣
theres on an youtube called man or beast
26:14
Kudos to Peter and Editor for making the small audio direction switch up while Peter is explaining Stereoscopic Image. Very nice touch and one that I don't think very many people would take the time to do, so very nice work and thank you!
I'm expecting you to go down the rabbit hole as quickly as Elizabeth did and, in the process, she and Will became besties
Wow you just met two UA-cam/musical LEGENDS and barely even realised xD I love it
terminology of death core vocals is like terminology of skateboard tricks.
I don’t know which is better, this analysis or learning that Will is casually going to Opera shows 😅. His cleans absolutely took me when I first heard Hypnosis. I believe that came out shortly after this beast of a song, and I couldn't process the fact that they were the same person.
Came for the reaction to the pig squeals, stayed for the awesome commentary
check out Into The Earth. I think that songs breakdowns showcase how filthy Will's lows really are. and of course the emotional ride of the Pain Remains trilogy.
I hope Will sees this video because we know he's hyped about Opera and I bet he'd love to do a video with Peter !
The playthroughs are a must really.
I love these videos. There's always something that I've never noticed before and it makes for a really cool experience
Love when people have open minds towards new music. Great video🙂
I love that when you explained stereoscopic, you exampled it by moving the sound from left right, genius!
waited for you to react to Will. Thx a lot!
Charismatic voice put camera in his throat. He is a vocal beast
Is the Will Ramos -> Sleep Tokan pipeline about to happen to Peter as well?? Hahaha great reaction
If you want to hear Will’s singing voice, either of his Sleep Token covers are great.
Rain is just a fun song to try to sing along to for me, with some vocal range in it.
you can see Will's technical prowess in his one takes and would love to see you react to this song on the one take!!
Those Adam's solos are the most awesome solo's i've ever heard!
Will ❤ Saw them live last summer, they're great live too. 1 checked out from bucket list 😂
Tell me, have you seen a video where Elisabeth (Charismatic Voice) puts a camera in Will's throat and he does all his "sounds"?
And if you're interested in different growls/growlers, you should check out Tomi Joutsen (Amorphis). There is a voice I would happily wake up to 😊
"The Bee" is nice or "Dark Waters".
Absolutely love the stank face Peter, lol.
Will and Alex are amazing. There's a lot of talent in the metal genre, both men and women.
This was amazing! Automatic subscribe. Please do more.
Welcome!
Will Ramos did a cover of chokehold from sleep token. I would pay to see a reaction to that.
You still need to do a Slaughter to Prevail live performance, like Bonebreaker live in Moscow, or his one take performance of Viking
I was watching your analysis and breakdown on Gigi's cover of Unholy, you mentioned that you like dark gritty stuff so here's a new rabbit hole for you to dive into-Ado. I reccomend going for
1) Usseewa
2) Unravel
3) Crime and Punishment
4) Tot Musica
Any of those.
Absolutely listen to his one take of this song to really get his harsh ranges. It is bonkers.
Thought I was having an aneurysm when you did the left to right audio thing 😂
Will has a One Take Vocal cover of this song which is personally my favourite version.
You explaining focused vs panno vocal tracks at the end there had me listening to the whole song again in a different way. Thank you.
Ive never heard a better explination of the sounds, you made it second nature for me to understand.
Damn! I knew Will could do some freaky stuff but wow, that was amazing😲 Thanks for the analysis, Peter✨🎶
You have to check out Will's one take vocal of this. He is a beast.
Wow. Definitely not something I'll listen to again but I loved the breakdown of how the vocals are accomplished! Awesome job, as always!
@7:27 omg that face is the epitome of first ramos reaction ahahhaha. love the videos peter
When you listen to metal for years it eventually becomes clear as to what they're saying and bands are like brands of metal, you find your favorite and get invested in that band. So you end up learning the lyrics through the internet and sometimes the lyrics come with the album.
I love music.
Another great vocalist is Ben Duerr from Shadow Of Intent, low vocals but cleans. Thanks
I like how you panned the sound from left to right as you were explaining it. Nice one.. 🙂
Will actually doesn't multi-track his vocals, he's learned to activate different sound sources simultaneously so that layered sound can actually be made live! Mind blowing talent
Woahhh that was cool how you played the audio in the left and right ear when you were explaining it haha
Brilliant editing on that left ear right ear part 👏 👌
"another genre that does this is K-Pop"
The most music I listened to the past 2 years explained in one sentence.
Will's one take Lorna Shore videos on his channel. Also his one take Sleep Token covers for some clean singing by Will.
He is the greatest vocalist to ever grace this earth. I don’t think there’s anyone that can top him or ever will.
Time to check out Phil Bozeman in Whitechapel. He has a very warm baritone clean voice and powerful harsh vocals yet easier to hear the lyrics. "Without Us" is probably a good song to get the contrast between the two types
