  • Founded in Berlin, Wisconsin in 1898, Russell has been the bootmaker of choice for the pioneers of history. From Eisenhower to Earl Shaffer and Charles Lindbergh to Harrison Ford, our quaint little workshop has created a tradition unlike any other in footwear. This video explores the Russell workshop and features a conversation between CEO Luke Kolbie and COO Joe Gonyo regarding the unique boot making process found only at Russell Moccasin.

I can’t wait to own a pair of Russell’s. This was a testament to the quality, heritage, and craftsmanship put into every pair.

@@w.c.russellmoccasinco When you get your Russell Moccasin footwear, don't be surprised of the quality and fit. I have three pair of Russell Moccasins. I had my first pair custom made in 2002. I even have a pair in red, white, & blue.

I worked for Gokeys in StPaul MN and they made their boots this way. The cobblers were upstairs from the retail store. Fascinating to watch the process.

The only shoe/boot/moccasin that have touched my feet in the last 13 years are Russell's. I did not know about their amazing product when I made a visit to the factory in 2010. I now own 10 pairs! They have served me well walking about the USA, South America, and on 4 trips to Africa. My local cobbler was very impressed when resoling a pair last year. Keep up the good work! See you at Sandanona in Millbrook, NY next time you come through!

I got my first pair of Russell’s 17 years ago that I still wear today. I’ve had them re-soled twice and they are still holding up. You don’t see that kind of craftsmanship much anymore. I’m currently breaking in a pair of safari boots and the quality is still as good as it was 17 years ago.

Thanks Cody! What is funny is that many of our craftsmen have been around so long that there is a high chance your new one was made by the same boot maker as your first pair!

Its a very compelling message - Longevity, hand made in the US, good designs that are repairable, theoretically waterproof without crazy degradable membranes. The legacy of Russell appears to be stark.
I just hope that legacy still exists, and if I decide to spend 2.5-3 times as much money as I would normally spend on boots, that customer service is willing to actually help me if something goes wrong. And I also hope that the money going toward those boots would be for the actual features, materials and labor of the boots with a fair profit on top. Hopefully not just a brand name price padding to line the pockets of a venture capitalist wanting to cheapen and streamline a product and coast on the namesake of a previously high end brand while quality degrades.

There something to be said for doing things right in the first place, creating something that can be maintained is paramount. Great job.

I remember back in the 1960s in Laredo, Texas, my grandpa and my grandma, we used to cross the border to Mexico to buy Mexican beer and a dry beef called- carne seca from a town called sabinas hidalgo- they still make it today, it's dehydrated beef and they rolled it up it's cook with eggs and tomatoes and onions after it's a prepared they call it machacado it's a very popular meal in the northern state of Mexico, and I remember the butcher shop and other neighbors around the business they always had a list of things they wanted my grandparents to bring back on the next trip to them - everything from hand towels shampoo Levi's pants and Levi's jackets stetson hats exetera exetera- The reason was because everything made in USA was excellent quality and I mean Everything, today everything made in USA still great quality but it's a little more expensive and somethings are just not made here anymore, Russell moccasins are still made here and it's a living pruff that Made in America is Made good ,I'm retired now so I don't do lots of outdoor activities but after watching how good this boots are made I'm in 100% and it's a perfect excuse to go walking and exercise but the best part is the feeling of wearing a great pair of American Made by hand boots. GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GID BLESS THE AMERICAN WORKING PEOPLE AND THEIR EMPLOYERS.

I have a pair of Russell boots that i purchased in 1971. They are still in one piece though a little beat up. I also have a pair of Russell chukkas purchased in the early 1980's. They have been resoled a couple of times and are still going strong.

I have been hunting with a pair of Russell Sheep Hunters with the air bob sole for over 25 years. Best boots in the nation and you can send them in for repair and refurbishing when they begin to wear out. Great product.

I am constantly wearing out boots and gloves as well because I am outside working so much so I think that I need to buy my first pair. This makes sense to me on how they are built because from making moccasins myself for myself and family you indeed do start from the bottom and go up for your moccasin m. First we trace out the door to make sure that it’s gonna fit your foot personally and true. That’s what my daughter used to wear as a child all the time or she went barefoot. I’m glad I stumbled onto this video.

I owned a pair of boots similar to W.C. Russell Moccasin Co. boots back in 1995. Those boots were excellent, and I loved the way they fit, I eventually out grew them, and I've been looking for something similar to purchase for the past twenty nine years. Something tells me the manufacture of my old boots copied W.C. Russell Moccasin Co.'s pattern, but there's nothing like the original. I am ready to pick up some of your boots. I would like to know when's a good time during the year to check the website for new inventory?

I love the look of the Ball and Buck collaboration which looked to be a safari inspired version of Joe’s PH (Bronzed leather and tan twill) but I was late to become aware of them. At 3:20 into the video there appears to be a pair similar to the B&B (sitting at far left on a shelf).
I was wondering if that’s and option. I LOVE the look of the safari PH but like the upper of Joe’s version. Is that a possibility?

I just got a pair of the south 40s delivered today and they look pretty poorly put together. I sent a message to the company hoping for some resolution. The boots don’t match and appear to have zero quality control before being shipped out. Hope they respond and make it right.

Love all my boots/shoes from Russells, but I cancelled my last order because waiting well over a year for a pair of boots is ridiculous, whether that’s because they were bought out or not is debatable, the longest I had to wait for a order in the past was 5 months. I’ve switched to the boot makers in the northwest US for my footwear needs, they’re comparable to Russells and can delivery on reasonable timelines………

I own 3 pairs and love them, I'm not sure this changing of ownership will be good for the brand.
Choices and customization is what drove the brand to this point and these new owners want to do away with that.
This is certainly an attempt to wring more profit out of the brand name.

With this kind of construction, replacing the toebox really becomes a big pain. Maybe good for hiking, but not optimal for work.

  • @dudeman1828

If you don’t already own Russell boots, you waited too long. They don’t offer the same services they always have.
Do they still offer custom foot traces for the perfect fit?…NO!
Do they still allow you to customize leather or lace up options?….NO!
Well ok, did they go down in price since they offer less?…NO!
Fine, then they must offer more boot models?… nope far les!
It’s a classic case of the new guy chasing profits instead of obtaining perfect fits. Basically 80% of yelp reviews are 1 star since the new owner took over.
