Russell’s Multi-Layer Moccasin Construction Explained
W. C. Russell Moccasin Co. CEO Luke Kolbie explains Multi Layer Moccasin construction, which was developed at Russell in the early 1900s receiving US patents. The ingenious, yet extremely difficult and time intensive process includes up to 4 individual wet lasting processes, more than any other boot construction in the world. This process, handed down from shoemaker to shoemaker with constant improvement has allowed Russell to become the foremost experts in performance outdoor footwear. With numerous world firsts and three pairs in the Smithsonian, Russell Moccasin is undoubtedly the most accomplished boot company in US history.
End cut offs have long been the best way of explaining our Multi Layer Moccasin construction and has been included in our advertisements since the early 1900s. You can read more on our Process page russellmoccasin.com/pages/process

For $700 they should be 100% water proof. I can buy 4 pairs of the Irish setter wing shooter boots that are 100% waterproof for the price of one of these! I’ve worn the same pair of WS since 2014 I’ve worn the soles nearly smooth still no leaks. You can by a $40 boot at Wallmart that only lets in “some” water lol

I want a pair of your oneidas and bird shooters but the sizing of your footwear is quite confusing. I wear Allen Edmonds dress shoes in 9 3e and Alden boots in 8.5 ee/eee so I’d think RM would be in 8.5 ee or so but after trying the scanning size feature, I was assigned a size of 8 e. I’m so confused what to believe given that my AE and Alden sizes are based off the brannock device.

I remember back in the 1960s in Laredo, Texas, my grandpa and my grandma, we used to cross the border to Mexico to buy Mexican beer and a dry beef called- carne seca from a town called sabinas hidalgo- they still make it today, it's dehydrated beef and they rolled it up it's cook with eggs and tomatoes and onions after it's a prepared they call it machacado it's a very popular meal in the northern state of Mexico, and I remember the butcher shop and other neighbors around the business they always had a list of things they wanted my grandparents to bring back on the next trip to them - everything from hand towels shampoo Levi's pants and Levi's jackets stetson hats exetera exetera- The reason was because everything made in USA was excellent quality and I mean Everything, today everything made in USA still great quality but it's a little more expensive and somethings are just not made here anymore, Russell moccasins are still made here and it's a living pruff that Made in America is Made good ,I'm retired now so I don't do lots of outdoor activities but after watching how good this boots are made I'm in 100% and it's a perfect excuse to go walking and exercise but the best part is the feeling of wearing a great pair of American Made by hand boots. GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GID BLESS THE AMERICAN WORKING PEOPLE AND THEIR EMPLOYERS.

Very useful, and very cool to see up close how these unique boots are put together. it's extraordinary how advanced they were from the early day of manufacture, and also ho unique the techniques have remained. I supposed there is no was to industrialise these construction techniques, one of the reasons (besides patents?) that they were not more widely copied.

I owned a pair of boots similar to W.C. Russell Moccasin Co. boots back in 1995. Those boots were excellent, and I loved the way they fit, I eventually out grew them, and I've been looking for something similar to purchase for the past twenty nine years. Something tells me the manufacture of my old boots copied W.C. Russell Moccasin Co.'s pattern, but there's nothing like the original. I am ready to pick up some of your boots. I am constantly wearing out boots and gloves as well because I am outside working so much so I think that I need to buy my first pair. This makes sense to me on how they are built because from making moccasins myself for myself and family you indeed do start from the bottom and go up for your moccasin m. First we trace out the door to make sure that it’s gonna fit your foot personally and true. That’s what my daughter used to wear as a child all the time or she went barefoot. I’m glad I stumbled onto this video.

If you don’t already own Russell boots, you waited too long. They don’t offer the same services they always have. Do they still offer custom foot traces for the perfect fit?…NO! Do they still allow you to customize leather or lace up options?….NO! Well ok, did they go down in price since they offer less?…NO! Fine, then they must offer more boot models?… nope far les! It’s a classic case of the new guy chasing profits instead of obtaining perfect fits. Basically 80% of yelp reviews are 1 star since the new owner took over.

I own 3 pairs and love them, I'm not sure this changing of ownership will be good for the brand. Choices and customization is what drove the brand to this point and these new owners want to do away with that. This is certainly an attempt to wring more profit out of the brand name.

That's awesome! If you look at a cutaway of the boots on the Process page of our website it makes a lot of sense. Once you get above the inner vamp where it joins the quarters, there are needle holes that will allow water to seep through. Below that, it actually has to soak through both leather layers, which would take a very long time. Glad your are enjoying them and can't wait to see the video!

Its a very compelling message - Longevity, hand made in the US, good designs that are repairable, theoretically waterproof without crazy degradable membranes. The legacy of Russell appears to be stark. I just hope that legacy still exists, and if I decide to spend 2.5-3 times as much money as I would normally spend on boots, that customer service is willing to actually help me if something goes wrong. And I also hope that the money going toward those boots would be for the actual features, materials and labor of the boots with a fair profit on top. Hopefully not just a brand name price padding to line the pockets of a venture capitalist wanting to cheapen and streamline a product and coast on the namesake of a previously high end brand while quality degrades.
