  • One of these USB-C hubs cost three times the other. Can it possibly be worth it? Here's a look at the Anker PoweCore 8-in-1 and Hyper HyperDrive Ultimate 11 Port with advice to help you make sure you get the right one for you.

      I am thinking of buying a Anker as I have a Macbook M1 Air which I also use for Music Production, I would of preferred if it had 3 x USB ports. 1x Audio Interface, 1 x keyboard/controller but it would have been nice to have a 3rd USB-A port to connect an External Hard Drive. I wonder if it is possible to connect a USB-A 9 port adapter to one of the USB-A slots?

    I'm looking for a dock for my iMac, but nearly all the ones I've seen are aimed at laptops only have a stubby little cable that mean the dock will be dangling in the air above my desk. The only ones with longer cables seem to be the more pricey Caldigit type ones that do quite a bit more than I need.

    I'll never use a Hyper product again. I bought a HyperDrive Duo 7-in-2 flush mount, and it heated up so badly that it arced and fried everything connected to my computer including the computer (2020 MBP), my audio interface, and a MIDI cable connected to my controller. I had to replace everything. Fortunately, Apple upgraded my bricked laptop with a brand new M1 MBP. I wasn't so lucky with the audio interface. I won't trust Hyper evermore.

    Hi - the type of information that you just shared is very rare and even if there are some sites discussing this, they are all very confusing. Having said that, I have a Dell XPS 9550 from 2016 where the HDMI can only support 4K 30Hz but there is a thunderbolt 3 which I believe can support 4K 60Hz. So my question is, will I be able to connect the machine to the Anker in your video and connect the other end of the USB to a USB 4K 60 Hz monitor? In essence, will the usb-c port in the hub capable receive the video output from the thunderbolt and push it out via the other usb-c to the monitor? Very confusing eh!!?!?

    • @MatthewFortner
      @MatthewFortner  3 роки тому

      Thank you for the feedback. I wish this would work for you, but this hub does not support Thunderbolt 3 so you would not get video through the type-C port on the hub. There are Thunderbolt 3 hubs, but at my last look they are much pricer. I wish I had an easy and inexpensive answer than that.

    How’s the performance of Anker? How do the ports perform in transfer speed etc? Any connection issues? Does the hub get too hot?

    • @MatthewFortner
      @MatthewFortner  3 роки тому +1

      The Anker’s 10GB/s is faster than all the 5GB/s hubs I’ve tested. I don’t yet have the ultimate in SSD to fully explore the limits, but 100GB data transfers from a middling external SSD to my 2019 MacBook Pro have taken 3 minutes. The Hyper was closer to 4 minutes. Anker says temperatures can reach up to 149 degrees Fahrenheit. In my experience, they all get hot and more so during intensive use. I’ve noticed this trend in a lot of recent tech peripherals recently. That seems to be where they are pushing to eek out performance. Too hot, though? Well it works without fault and I can handle it fine during use. I don’t leave it connect though when not in use. They use power even with no peripherals connected.

    The Anker hub you feature works fine until you try to charge your devices from the USB ports and need to unplug the computer and take it elsewhere for a while. Then the charging stops! I could not find the reson why this happens, the hub was still powered by the PD cable and should be passing power to all the plugged in devices. It just would not. :(

I’ve seen just a little on Reddit about this potential issue with M1 MacBooks. The thought is that users should unplug the hub from the computer before unplugging the power from the hub to avoid a power drop. The best practice might be to plug the power directly to the laptop until more is learned.

    Neither device is a hub and both are considered docks. First glaring mistake. After almost 3 mins, no mention of how fast you can pump data into either device, are they 3.0, 3.1 or 3.2 or God forbid USB 4 i.e. Thunderbolt 4?

    • @MatthewFortner
      @MatthewFortner  3 роки тому

      Hi, Wayne. I appreciate you taking the time to comment. While I’m not arguing over what the technically correct term is, they are called hubs by the manufacturers, retailers and consumers. They typically reserve the term dock for devices that require an external power supply to operate at any capacity, meaning there is no functionality without an external power source like with my StarTech Thunderbolt dock. These smaller devices, or hubs as they’ve been dubbed, can largely function off the power supplied from the computer or tablet - not requiring a power adapter at all times.
      I start with USB-A data transfer speeds at about 2m20s.
      I mention the USB-C data specs at 2m45s.
      I hope this helps and thank you.

    Hi @Matthew Fortner, my new laptop needs 95W input as minimum power and (apart from some 400€, workstation hubs) there really aren't any options with this high of an output. I will need to plug in the original charger directly. Can I use a hub like this without any extra external power? If not, I would need tow power bricks and one hub, just to expand the small port setup it has. This sounds ridiculous to me ...

      If you are using your laptop power supply in one port and this in another port, then you do not need an additional power supply.

    Hi sir,
    I'm planning to get the new M1 MacBook Pro, it only has 2 TB ports.
    I'll be using one of the ports to be connected to my external monitor (LG 27UL850) 24/7, it charges my old MBP at 60W rate, and I will expect the same on the new Macbook.
    But if I'm planning to get the Anker PowerCore 8-in-1 and attach it to the other TB port, how does it work?
    Port 1: Connected to external monitor, powering the Macbook at 60W
    Port 2: Connected to Anker PowerCore, requires 15W to power it, and powers the Macbook at 85W
    Will it mess up my Macbook? Is the Macbook smart enough to be used with an external monitor, while powering up the adapter while charging my Macbook at a healthy watts?
    Thank you.

    • @MatthewFortner
      @MatthewFortner  3 роки тому

      My M1 MBP has has no issues thus far with the Anker. Apple has also released updates to address the potential issues that seemed to be caused by non-compliant hubs. The 85w power spec on the Anker refers to the maximum power the hub can parse from charger. The hub does not supply power itself. You have to plug your power adapter into the hub or computer. If you plug-in a 100w adapter, it will supply 85w max. If you plug in a 60w power adapter into the hub and connect the hub to the computer, your computer will receive about 45 W of charging since the hub uses about 15w. If you can connect to your external monitor using HDMI with the hub, then you can plug your power adapter directly into the computer if that makes you feel more secure. Keep in mind that the hub will still draw 15w of power either way. So far it’s been enough.

    How can I test my type c after marker dongle watts consumption you have in your devices ? Just plugged it uses that much or after charging the dongles uses those 15w u mention ?

    • @MatthewFortner
      @MatthewFortner  2 роки тому +1

      I don’t know how to test that, but most manufacturers reference the consumption when citing the max watts and the charging capability. Those little things get hot so there’s considerable energy running through them.

    Hi
    I have questions for you
    I have brought anker usb c hub 555 8 in 1 . I brought it from Canada Vancouver via Amazon . But I'm in india is it will be work in India specially its PD port type c. In mac it's showing notification on battery ( battery not charging)
    But charging sign is showing on battery. Can you please help me on this.
    Actually canada voltage is different from India

    • @MatthewFortner
      @MatthewFortner  2 роки тому

      I’m not sure I know enough to be good help. Anker support would be a better option. It could be that your peripherals and laptop are requiring more power than required to charge. Whatever you have plugged into the hub saps power from what is available to charge the laptop battery. You have more than one port on your Mac, so you’d be better off charging directly regardless.

    You said that USB 3.0 is 10Gbit/s but 3.0 is 5Gbit/s. You need to do some fact checking before making videos.

      The manufacturer probably meant 10 in total. Not per one port.
