I have a M1 MacBook Air and I have just bought this anker hub. I have an ssd Samsung T7 shield. Strangely I get around 650 mbps through the hub, the some as directly connected to usb-c on MacBook. I also have an intel 27´ iMac and on this older computer (2017) the ssd gets around 900mbps speed directly connected to usb-c. If I connect the ssd through the hub I get the some speed - 900 mbps on my iMac. I can't understand the results...but it seems the hub is actually 10Gbps... Thanks for the video
I appreciate your evaluation and attention to power charging the 8+1 hub with Anker. I recently purchased the Anker USB C Hub, 555 (8-in-1), with 100W Power Delivery to use with the Microsoft Surface Pro 11 that I picked up in late June, as it only has USB-C connections. Should I buy a 100W USB C Charger as an accessory, or is it unnecessary? Your video is almost three years old, and you are inquiring if things have changed with the Anker 8+1 hub and newer ones, such as the 555.
Of great interest for me: How do latencies/ping measurements compare among these hubs when cellphone ~tethering/supplying internet over the hub's ethernet jack to a connected device alongside those data rates?
One more question please. Plugging my Ethernet cable in this hub gives me half the speed as going directly into the Ethernet port on the back of my iMac. Is this to be expected and for what reason? Thanks.
@@Laporte48 Shouldn't work like that but consider that you are sharing data across one port, so if you have other stuff going on, there could be a speed reduction. If you plug in the hub and ethernet, you should see a 1gbps connection (about 112MB/s) which should match what you get on the iMac.
thank buddy. for now i have macbook air m1, 1 4k external monitor and 1 external ssd. should i buy this hub? i am likely gonna buy it. I prefer one hub for charger so now have only one port left (type c thunderport 4) to reach the 4k external monitor (lg 27up600) and external ssd asus rog strix.
Just wondering: 2:00 the drive is connected to a USB 3.0 Hub, even if it is recognized as a 3.1 .... could there be a USB 3.0 throttle ? USB 3.0 --> 5 Gbps USB 3.1 --> 10 Gbps
@@tdcattech Maybe I interpret it wrongly, but the information that appears at 2:00 is that the drive is connected to a 4 port USB 3.0 Hub, and this hub is then connected to a USB 3.1 bus. So the hub seems to be acting as a 3.0 connection.
Ah, sorry, yes. You're quite right. I didn't spot that. I have just connected this to my work laptop (Windows) and, although I can't speed test, the device manager now shows an Intel USB 3.1 Host Controller and 2 x Generic SuperSpeed USB Hubs (as well as a load of other stuff). I don't have a clue why the Mac appears to use a USB 3.0 hub for this connection but that might well be the reason for this bottleneck. Many thanks.
@@tdcattech so basically it’s a macOS issue that this hub is only detected as USB 3.0 instead of 3.1 10Gbps? Or does it mean 10Gbps data port only works in intel-based PC/Mac?
@@tdcattech Hello.! I was doing speed tests and I found something quite strange. Oh, you also asked about VAVA. I've never tried them but they look similar (and I know that does not mean they are the same in any way) to the the Satechi hubs. All metal, sleek design. I have a video coming out in a week or two on this hub from Satechi - geni.us/satechislim - It's similarly priced to the VAVA and is very nice to use. I haven't speedtested yet though. That will be in the vid.
You talked about the handshake of the device to the USB storage devices but you didn't test the handshake between the hub and you're mac, you should of unplugged from the mac then replugged in
I've never used a Satechi but they certainly win on the design and build quality front with their sleek aluminium case ( geni.us/satechiv2 - I was looking at this one). Depends what you need though. I would miss a USB-C data port and the Satechi is only USB 3.0 5gbps whereas the Anker is 10gbps USB 3.1 (assuming your laptop supports it).
If your laptop and devices can use 3.1 then it would technically be faster. It really depends what you’re doing. You’ll only need 10gbps if you’re regularly moving big files.
@@tdcattech yes, sad, but true, Had it for a year and it worked pretty flawlessly until yesterday it just died. Power light comes on but does not connect to any of my computers...
Will it get hot when connected to ethernet for hours, just ethernet , and will it affect my m1 macbook pro cause a lot of hubs were causing damage to m1s online, also i am looking at caldigit soho but it does not have a ethernet connection, what do you recommend thanks in advance.
It will get warm. This hub has never got more than warm for me. As for whether it will damage your M1 Mac, I'm not going to commit on that one. All I will say is that it has not damaged mine to date. :-)

I bought a generic type c hub probably 10$ . Microsd card supposedly 100mbps shows barely 30mbps read
good test. thank you.
Can you do a speed test on the ethernet port? Mainly for latency, ping, and achievable bandwidth.
I did it today. I get 900mbps download and 200mbps upload which is very good.
This hub does go to 1080p 144fps?
Does it have problems with overheating? And if it does, does it disconnect all the devices connected to it randomly?

No. Not that I can see. If you've already got sufficient power on the desktop, it can be powered entirely from that.

Yes. No external power is required. The PD in is just for pass through to the laptop etc.

your usb c pd input has to have a 65w power brick

Is the advertised 10gbps cumulative, eg two drives simultaneously connected and transferring at 5gbps each?
Yes. It’s a limitation of the USB 3.1 connection to the laptop so you won’t be able to achieve 10gbps on multiple devices at the same time.
