Would be interesting to see a comparison with other similar hubs, like the OWC one. The video couldn't be sponsored by any of the manufacturers though.
Agree. I own 3 CalDigits, and two OWC Thunderbolt expander hubs. I could totally do a comparison. I'll tell you that both the CalDigit and the Anker work great. I've been disconnected much too often by the OWC (the new thunderbolt one) and the caldigits get VERY hot (at least mine do). This Anker one surprised me at how it never got much more than just a tiny bit warm even with everything running at full throttle - such as editing 4K ProRes 422 video. Bottom line: we are finally at a place where there's some serious choice, and some much needed competition on the USB-C dock space. 👍
@@pal2tech I have an older OWC Thunderbolt 2 hub which I used with my 2013 iMac, it’s now used with my new M1 Mac Mini via an adapter, and it works great, it also doesn’t get hot. I got all my external storage connected to it. I was considering a 2nd one for the other USB-C port on the Mini, but it needs to be able to connect to my Dell 4K monitor via USB-C, as it has USB ports of it’s own in which I have speakers and a monitor light connected. Beyond that, I’d like more USB 3 ports and preferably an SD card slot, and a USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 for external NVMe storage. I currently have an external SD card dongle connected to the Mini. I’m not fussed over HDMI or ethernet.
@@msandersen Had an OWC dock before and an OWC 10Gbps adapter plus a few OWC cables, and neither worked particularly well due to loose connectors. Thunderbolt connection is flimsy to begin with, then the bad connector selection or mechanical engineering from OWC made it worse. So far I've used Lenovo, CalDigit and Lintes (which does only OEM, so you never buy a Lintes under its own brand name) docks and a QNAP 10Gbps adapter, both are better in terms of mechanical stability than my OWC units. Also FYI, the only truly mechanically and electrically stable 40Gbps Thunderbolt cables I'v used are those 80cm Apple passive cables. They are surprisingly cheap too, but they are stiff and I would not want to use it on connections that I expect to unplug very often. I also have an active cable from LG (the one came with LG monitors sold in Apple stores), which is flexible yet very stable. All other 40Gbps cables, active or passive, are trash in my own experience. If I need a cheap long cable particularly used with worn-out jacks, I use a 20Gbps cable, which is much more reliable due to its slower data rate.
All the peripherals clattering to the table after you plug them in really makes this video for me! Hilarious, yet informative. Love your high energy. Very well done!
If you plug two monitors into the two hdmi ports on macOS , the two monitors will mirror and display the same content. Why did you not mention it and make it look like this dock can support dual hdmi without mirroring and intentionally hide the part when you plug the monitor cable in ? Why did you use your hard drive to cover the ports where display cables were plugged in ? You were using a hdmi to usb c converter to make it work , but why did not you mention it in the video ?

In the beginning of multi USB chargers I need a lot one of these for my travels.. I chose a Anker charger with 5 ports and my regret can be measure with the percentage of the ports that stopped working.. Now I have only one port usable..
Um, your speed test didn't test "how fast it can go through this hub". The Disk Speed test measures the external drive's (e.g. your samsung x5 ssd) read/write speeds, and your drive is writing at half the claimed write speed of 2300MB/s. T3/T4 has theoretical 40Gbps "bandwidth," which does not equate to max theoretical data transfer speeds, since data transfer has and is limited to PCIe speed, which for T3 is 16Gbps and T4 32Gbps, and because the bandwidth is shared with data, video and power. So, bottom line you will never ever get 40Gbps data transfer speeds, because 40Gbps refers to max bandwidth.
I was looking for a good hub and I found your channel. I'm digging the vibes here! I like your style of review, you've earned a like and sub! Looking forward to your other videos!

I appreciate that the M1 Apple Silicon is not supporting the more than one display, but does the M1 MBP support the Thunderbolt 4 and get the speeds you speak of. I am VERY interested in the hub IF it can support the data speeds across the single Thunderbolt port on the M1.

Great review! If I were to use a Thunderbolt 3 laptop, is it just incompatible for the multiple screens? Or it wouldn't work totally for all the ports at all?

Nice. I personally use a razer thunderbolt 4 dock. For me I chose it because I liked the 4 usb-c/thunderbolt ports on it rather then hdmi or display port as I only use it for peripherals that I want to swap between a gaming PC and a Mac Pro. I have them both connected to my monitor so I just swap inputs on monitor and plug in the thunderbolt cable from either computer to use single peripherals. Kind of acting like a KVM for me. But if you wanted to use it for video out any of the thunderbolt ports work with usb c to display adapters. I have tested them.

So, though this video all fun and biased towards Anker I wanted to do my own testing. I have this exact same doc demo'd in this video and a OWC doc and did some testing. I have a Macbook Pro 2020 edition with 4 thunderbolt 3 ports on it. The very first problem I found with the Anker Apex 777 was that the ethernet port was only getting a max throughput of 600Mbts per second up and down. I could not reach my 950Mbts that a standard Startech ethernet to USB C adapter could achieve. I then did the same test on the OWC and found I could get 680Mbts which is still nowhere near what I should be getting. I changed Thundebolt cables and changed ports on the laptop and still didnt fix the issue. SO either these very expensive docs are not fully compatible with Thunderbolt 3 on Macbooks (Intel) or they just dont delivery as they promise to.

Excellent point. I’ve feared that the reason is, that all of the manufacturers are using the same internal board. I’ve watched this segment for since the launch of TB4 and I’ve only seen this form factor. Perhaps the worldwide chip shortage is to blame. This configuration works great with a laptop. However, the TB4 cables are limited to 2 meters and as a result one can end up with the cable chaos shown in this video.
That's the first thing I noticed. Killed it for me :-(
@@JasonFiske You may be on to something with the chip shortage and sharing the same board. The only things I want on the front are a sd card slot, usb-c, and usb 3.1 gen 1 slot for temporary connections. Here's to hoping someone makes a clean layout for a TB4 dock!
Thank you very much for the video. Great review and content. Just wondering if that hub is supported by the new 2021 MacBook Pro 14” now? I know at the end of the video you stated that it’s not really supported and it’s an Apple issue. Anyones input would be much appreciated.
That laugh at 4:37
Anyone got this to work with Lenovo Legion 7i Gen 6 (2021 version with 11th gen Intel processors)?
did you get your 16-55 lens fixed yet? what was wrong with it.
Sending in this week. I’ll make a video once I find out.
