My plumber charged me £1300 for two days work fitting a bath and changing pipes. Bath and taps supplied by me. Also £260 for replacing 2 radiators that I supplied.
My electrician charged me £1400 for 3 days work just Labour and certificates
My plasterer charged me £180 for a days Labour I supplied all the materials.
The plumber worked for a business and the other two were sole traders.
Apart from gas I am now going to all my own plumbing from now on. As for Brickies you would rather knock a wall down and replace with a wooden fence than pay their extortionate prices. The problem in this country is too much red tape for a sole trader to take in an apprentice. Big government intervention has messed this country up. They would rather bring in cheap Labour.

As a self employed painter and decorator 30yr you know the ones if you can piss you can paint we are a finishing trade and a vast majority of my time is taken up making good and making stuff look pretty for the client bad miters, ify plastering, holes left by Mr sparky and his mate Pete the plumb have even had to repoint walls to paint because the brickie knew is was to be painted, replace broken panes because there's no glazers, even had to tell Steve the scaf where the boards should be. Yeah we the lowest paid.
But without us the job ain't finished and that means unhappy client.
I love my job and that means more to me.

I'm surprised there was no mention of tilers. That's a skilled job and there's decent money to be made, especially in Victorian tiling. At a guess, I reckon they earn as much as plasterers, but I might be wrong.

    • @tilerman

I've been tiling 35 years and years back i done geometric tiling and yes, it was good money but there's not much demand for it nowadays. I haven't been asked to do any geometric jobs for some time now. As for pay, as with any trade, depends where you are and demand. I'm to old for site work now and where i live tilers are two a penny. To many tilers after not enough work and prices have dropped. I was making more money on a more regular basis 25 years ago doing commercial contract work. Had enough of it TBH.

I’m a bricky on a price and the money varies so much just due to things which are out of our control, such as you turn up to the job and your scaffold hasn’t been raised, you’ve ran out of sand, cement, which as labour only you can’t control. And of course the weather is a big factor but you have to make hay while the sun shines👍

Im a Bricklayer and i would agree with this im self employed but would say over the 25yrs of being a bricky my earnings have always been fairly high in comparison to the other trades...the last generation of bricklayers have all but gone im 43 and not seen anybody coming into the trade for at least the last 15 yrs. So there isn't many guys left and even less good guys around. My dad was a bricklayer and always told me they were the top of tree on a building site and I have to agree although I have admiration for all the trades. The better way of looking at it is an old site agent once said to me a pound for pound you get more from a bricklayer than any other trade and when you put it like that you really do.

I'm sure there pay is very much higher, all the houses round the expensive areas where I live have trade vans outside - I'm sure this is due to not declaring a lot of their earnings. Pretty disgusted at what they are getting - I have done all the plumbing, carpentry and painting in my all my houses which shows I can do their jobs but they couldn't do many other jobs without years of training. The amounts they try and charge are ridiculous and they get away with it due to shortages. Why are people going to bother doing physics, engineering, medicine if they get paid more for sticking some tubes together to make a long pipe - I think we all need a living wage but the disparity in wages between different job types is insane - my local hairdresser wants more for sticking some highlights in your hair (again you can do yourself with hair dye kit) than it costs to get a consultation with the top consultant heart surgeon in the area.

Unfortunately wages arnt based on how much your tools cost...would be nice though if it worked that way but its basic economics There's a huge demand for Bricklayers and very few about if any decent lads anymore. Im working on a job where one of the new build houses is having a thatched roof. The thatcher thats doing it has hardly any hand tools in comparison to yourself but is the only one of 2 guys in the whole of the East Midlands...its a 4 week contract for him and his wage bill is 35k, that's just shy of 9k a week wages and he is fully booked for the next 3 yrs. Supply and demand means he can charge what he wants 👍 and his worth is huge.
