Used the same mix for 1st and 2nd coat all the time. But i always go over the joints first, so u end up with 3 coats over the joints. Then its just speed skim me up baby. Love the videos
Exactly how I plaster. I've recently watched a couple of your videos and you're a good spread mate. I'll get my apprentice to watch them and take notes now I know your process is the same as mine! good job.
Looking good mate keep it I always find it easier to start from the bottom to top I just can’t be bothered after the walls covered with plaster I want to clean my tools not rushing jumping on the hop up to clean the edge coz in most cases the ceiling is plastered already so the edge goes off quicker
This lad is a good plasterer, good speed, neat job, never goes on hands and knees like some of the others do, if everything went tits up with his private work he would still make money on the sites, unlike some of the other you tube plasterers
the only reason why i really love starting in the top corner is the fact that it takes much more time than anywhere else, since you have the longest corner to work with. if i waste the most time on top first and then keep applying the bottom, the mud sets more evenly than the other way around. i think there is nothing worse than having parts of the wall set at a different pace than others. it also helps if you might drop some mud, it will fall on the wall below which is no problem instead of messing up your plastered surface. as ben glue mentioned below, pushing against the plaster from below makes it easier to apply. all of these things come especially true for me when working with natrual lime and clay plasters. though in germany we mostly spray the plaster on the surfaces, almost nobody does apply the material by hand anymore to safe your body from all the stress and increase the speed by at least 500%. you simply can't outplaster a machine that keeps applying around 20 liters of material every minute. that is the standard in germany, for that reason, to keep a good price for the customer and get a job, it is important to step up the game with machines. there are exceptions where application by hand is still used, but only if the surface is really small so it doesn't make sense to invest all the effort of preparing the machine, which easily takes off a third of your time just to get it going and clean it up afterwards.
Sound advice about trying new things. Tradition is just peer pressure from dead people. There is a lot to learn form the old ways but a lot to be discovered from experimenting. Great videos for folks like my who are not plasterers but can do it when required. Learnt a lot from your videos
you're so much quicker than me, I did this earlier more cause I mixed up more than I needed, I did have to wet up the gear a bit to make it workable for the second coat, but it came out all good in the end and deffo saved some time less waiting to trowel etc.
After 46 years of plastering I sort of please myself how I apply the skim coat, but take yesterday for instance I did two gauges each gauge taking in about 3 bags so I get as much on the wall as quick as possible then fill in the top when I'm down to the last couple of handboards, skimming is now the only part of plastering i enjoy because I find it that easy i can just daydream all day.
I think,... starting at the top corner more aplies to outdoor mixes, that go on in much thicker coats. So that you're pushing the plaster up onto itself, not allowing it to sag. Keep up the good work mate.
Everywhere in my local area no matter what type skim render lime ect its always shy on the top me and dad recon it's from starting top left and always dragging in from the top line I dunno. But I love starting from the bottom being a lanky streak of p!#s I need to get the lower bit 9ver and done with ASAP lol.
Why you waiting for the spark to fit those lights🤔 you just plaster straight over that, the spark can fit them later. Easier to clean without the lights as well
Hi, please can you make a video on how to effectively clean your tools and bucket, I find am spending a lot of time and making a lot of mess in the process, hate cleaning and was wondering how you do yours. Thanks mate. Love you videos.
take a toilet brush, it works wonders :) it has stiff hair, making it great for cleaning your tools, including the mixer or bucket. a brush from a broom might work aswell, but for the mixer the toilet brush having the hair point into every direction is definitely the better choice.
Hi, when applying the second coat I always struggle seeing where you’ve been between the first and second coat’s are there any tip’s, I was wondering whether a colour pigment could be added to the first coat so you can see the second coat better?? 🤷♂️ what’s your thoughts, cheers
I don't plaster enough to really get my speed up and develop time saving techniques but last week doing our bathroom wall I did leave the sponge float out which felt like a little advancement. Still mixed up way too much for the second coat though and had to throw it. Some you win, some you lose.
Can you plater over walls that have layers of paint without scraping the paint off first? Some of the paint is sort of a shiny texture and flaking off in places. Can I just put PVA on the wall first?
I just wanted to ask one more question regarding the speedskim. Following the 1st Coat I used the speedskim and Had a lot of trail lines and fat on the Speedskim do I use the plaster back on the wall or just Clean of the speedskim ?
Hi I'm new to plastering I was Going through your videos and wanted to ask, do you use The speed skim on the 2nd coat aswell as the first coat and than start troweling up or just use the speedskim on the first coat and than follow the procedure ?
What Ive noticed about your plastering, and it might just be because the distance and angle of the camera, but your wall appears flat as soon as you load up. Are you that good or is it just the camera. Love watching your vids mate.
There is nothing wrong with starting from the bottom... I've been plastering nearly 30yrs... I switch between starting at the top and starting from the bottom.. As long as you scratch on and top off neatly, keeping the skim flat scab free and no water marks... Jobs a good one..
The only rule you broke was not stuffing the cable tails up in the lid, bollocks to the sparks! 😁 After 40 years of spreading I'm at the stage of its getting a bit tough now and I'm gutted cos I love it so much. If you wanna do a fun/educational video how about doing a dirty water hit in a hot room, preferably a lid,I KNOW you know where I'm coming from don't ya mate. Hahaha.
Despite going over it twice, it's still a 1 coat plaster because it's from the same batch. You shouldn't kid yourself or anybody else. I'll consistently mix up 2 bags first coat and 1 bag to top it off. 25 years with my 14" marshalltown and that's it. No plastic, flex or speedskim, just the trowel. 3mm, no scrim showing through, no scallops and no brushed finishes in the corners. It would've took 2 mins for you to mix a second coat and would've been a much better finish that needs less water to trowel up.
then people wonder why the prices are high. You have got to price accordingly if you are faffing around with sparkies that dont give a shit about anyone but themselves and plumbers who are the same. Anyway rules are there to be broken. I was taught to start from the top and do ceilings first but the only reason to do ceilings first is so you dont drop plaster on finished walls, but if you cant do the ceilings theres no reason for cracking on with the walls and give them a wee scrape down if you drop any plaster on them later
Been plastering for years, tried to plaster from the top first like they say you should but doesn’t work for me, start from the bottom always, get videos 👍
Everyone has their own way of working bro. Being a lanky git I work opposite to you…top down. But that’s because it’s easier for me. 1 mix 2 costs is always the best way too, less waste and cleaning… All these little things get you in and out quicker
I'm quite disappointed Blain, but fair enough i understand circumstances. Try garden hose next time, you won't need to go down for water every time. Your method is OK on plasterboards, but I see plasterers do in it on solid walls and it looks like shit, very poor quality. 2 separate coats will always look better, but it much more easier.. but why we even bother with NVQ's means nothing to me.
Used the same mix for 1st and 2nd coat all the time. But i always go over the joints first, so u end up with 3 coats over the joints. Then its just speed skim me up baby. Love the videos

Hahaha this cracked me up 😂
Exactly how I plaster. I've recently watched a couple of your videos and you're a good spread mate. I'll get my apprentice to watch them and take notes now I know your process is the same as mine! good job.
I’ve plastered alone doing everything it’s hard graft big respect .
We 2 coat with the same mix all the time if what’s left in the bucking is setting off knock it back up goes on lovely and sets off quicker 😊
Looking good mate keep it I always find it easier to start from the bottom to top I just can’t be bothered after the walls covered with plaster I want to clean my tools not rushing jumping on the hop up to clean the edge coz in most cases the ceiling is plastered already so the edge goes off quicker
This method needs a name. We do it quite often and nicknamed it 'the grant' because a bloke called grant introduced us to it 😂
I’m learning the trade and love watching these videos, so therapeutic😊

Nice one, pretty much my exact process.
Always good content and full explanation great videos

Very true. I always start from the top right with Rendering for that very reason. Bang on

Sorry…I should have explained. There’s only one that’s fitted, the one in the video. He has to come back to do the rest
@@PlasteringForBeginners ahh gotcha👌🏽👌🏽
What’s with the metal rings around the screws on the vaulted ceilings? Never seen that before.
Board and stand for me hate using it out bucket best job i ever had on the trowl was on £30 a day long time ago 👍👍

@@dali1384 thanks Dali, never thought of that but will give it a try. Cleaning for me is the worst part of plastering.
Great idea!!

Stick to a routine ,,, the first coat should be flat enough that it is obvious where you have applied the second coat.
I have the same issue, hard to tell between the first cost and second coat. A tutorial on this would be nice. 😊
I don't plaster enough to really get my speed up and develop time saving techniques but last week doing our bathroom wall I did leave the sponge float out which felt like a little advancement. Still mixed up way too much for the second coat though and had to throw it. Some you win, some you lose.
It’s little wins mate! Fair play to you…keep it to
On a job like that why you not using the cordless mixing drill?
Can you plater over walls that have layers of paint without scraping the paint off first? Some of the paint is sort of a shiny texture and flaking off in places. Can I just put PVA on the wall first?
I just wanted to ask one more question regarding the speedskim. Following the 1st Coat I used the speedskim and Had a lot of trail lines and fat on the Speedskim do I use the plaster back on the wall or just Clean of the speedskim ?
Do you use corner trowels or are they just a gimmick
question: Why did you not apply any primer onto the drywall before starting to plaster ?
You don’t need it mate. Just skim straight onto it (unless it’s over 6 months old. Then you need to PVA it 👍)
@@PlasteringForBeginners Thanks for quick response ! Learning so much from you.

What's the mix of that plaster? Is it lime based?
Always start top left hand side if you left handed right side it's the way all real plasterers work old school

hope you ain't on price pal
I’m on price mate. 4 - 5 bags a day is more than enough for me! I’m not here to kill myself
im getting tired watching you there. You can see why machine plastering took off in Europe. This just seems so old school.
Why respect sparkies, they do not respect ANY other trade, think they are god's gift.
