just fyi for anyone that finds, just both arm both tracks at the same time and you won't have to play the song back just to record the full midi chord sequence into your Synth track
Excellent! I haven't the time to make up my own chords, as I'm still chord-challenged and didn't have the time to put them together myself...so I was really glad to see this video appeared "recommended" in my UA-cam feed. I've had Cthulhu for awhile, but it sat on my computer. I only rediscovered it a few months ago, with the knowledge that I could use it in Logic X as a MIDI FX instead of having to set it up in the Environment. With this pack, which I bought last night and just briefly tried out, this is gonna be super cool! And also, +1 for MIDI FX Freeze for getting those chords. I am actually using another chord application, so this will be complimentary, especially for quickly capturing ideas. Thank you!
no, in logic pro x you can just open cthulu as a midi effect, like any of the other stock logic midi effects. it's very easy, no need to go into the environment anymore. also, in logic you can't get the individual notes coming out of cthulu which is lame but there is a free plug in called midi effects freeze (just google it) that will transform the single notes into chords/or notes for further manipulation.
yeah, it's much better now. it's funny, i used digital performer for a long time and then switched to logic x, so i never used any earlier versions of logic. thus, i have never needed to go into the environment, like ever. which is good, because, frankly it confuses me.
I agree, when i first loaded it in Logic Pro X like 2 years ago you had enable the IAC buss and then use the environment which introduced a lot of latency. Im glad there are some better options now though.
I wonder whether you would consider a follow up on this amazing tutorial as I think there is so much more to share about this excellent device. For instance, while you were experimenting with chords in Cthulu, I could see the name of the chord generated by your single key press displayed to the left of the virtual keyboard. Meanwhile, the names of other chords were displayed above the virtual keyboard. Were those related to the chord you had triggered? Were they recommendations from Cthulu for chords to follow on? How would you play those specific chords? Personally, I am hugely excited abou Cthulu but have yet to really dive in. Your demo is a start, although personally I have no real interest in the genres you demonstrated, I think it could lead to some inspiring ballad melodies
I don't know why people have such a hard time setting this up. I literally figured it out by myself, I think the UI is very intuitive and self-explanatory.
you need 3rd party software (loopMIDI), or you can record the cthulhu sine wave audio into edison, then use "export score to piano roll" feature to save as midi notes
Just a note for people without any musical theory knowledge or experience, essentially what you're doing is painting a picture with pre done little cutouts. On their own they look nice but you as an artist dont know how to put then together to get a well compossed picture in the end. Make sure to understand progressions of chords and the goal of the chords. Its no use having a library of chords if you yourself dont know where you're going with it. The more people disagree with this statement the more empty music without personality we will have. The easy path leads to less love and joy in making music.
As I'm reading the comments, a question comes to mind: will there be updates for this pack, and if so how can folks be notified? That said, I'll soon play around with it some more. Thanks again!
+ADSR Music Production Tutorials Good idea, although there are some errors in the music theory you programmed this with. In a preset that is supposed to be in Bbm (B flat minor) the chords that appear in Cthulhu's thought bubble appear in # (sharps) and some chords are erroneously labeled for example: F7 (F Dominant 7) appears as (Fmajor7) which are two very different type of chords. This is pretty annoying since you're selling this, therefore I was expecting at least the theory to be right.
I was very excited about the new technology, and I spent $ 150 to buy Cthulhu and many preset kit. But it 's hard to make a popular hit song. Do not expect much!
Just wondering, did you ever consider coming up with a chord progression with Cthulhu, then chopping that chord progression and then rerecording a new chord progression with the newly chopped samples from the chord progression, and then adding some effects to try and season it to your liking and to come up with something more creative as opposed to just using the chord progression you created with cthulhu? If you've never tried this, give it a try and you might be surprised with what you'll creatively come up with. Good luck.
Please let me know which presents to use for future bass & future house? It would save me time (possibly hours) to know which would work for each sub-genre' .
Just picked up Cthulhu for and using it in Pro Tools. Can you explain how to do the same set up you have here in Pro TOols? I want to play an external synth live like you are using the arp function in the plugin. Can't figure out how to make that work. Thanks!
Okay, I haven't bought this yet but it really looks cool. I was wondering, however, can the arpeggiated notes be played over the top of the chords? If so, how would that work?
if you use the Am EDM Chord, you have to play the notes within that scale right? for example if you play a F sharp note, what chord will Cthulhu output?
I would like to see a tutorial on how to trigger external gear like the MV-8000 while using this plug with pro tools. (Seriously..... I still use the MV. ;-)
There is a bank called Deep House chords in the pack. Ultimately you can apply these chords to right kind of sound (Rhodes, Wurly, analog pads etc) and you've got some soulful chords if you play them in the right progression. Hope that helps.
Most soulful house producers ate musicians and really know there theory; it'd be better to learn the theory than to just use this plugin... would be more rewarding in the long term
@@benbrooker You're are right, but the chord progressions they use are quite simple... And that if they use a chord progression at all... What you need to know to build those progressions isn't that much... And regarding the scales... you could use triads + 7th...
mike, i just purchased the chords & arp for cthulhu..i already had v.1 of cthulhu from a couple yrs ago...i placed the arp/chord folders in my presets folder (where they should go), but when i open up the VST-cthuhlu the presets DO NOT not show up. Please let me know what you recommend doing (yes i reset my computer as well) thanks!
+3ple my Cthulhu is playing just fine.. I've placed the arp/chord folders exactly where they need to go... They just don't show up when I open Cthulhu to play... I'm using ableton 8, OS X 10.9 I wonder if that's the reason.. Ur using the most recent op. System...
Hi Korey sorry for the late reply but yeah in the latest version the locations were changed. Im glad you got some direction on where to place them now. Enjoy and thanks !
It can be useful to learn more about scales and chords but from my point of view this plugin cut corners on music production instead teach people how to play chords and be more creative.
Whats wrong with making life easy for people, it's not cutting corners, it's just computerizing the whole process. If we are to follow what you are saying, we might aswell just play live instruments instead of using the computer.
Why not use both??? Absolutely learn as much music theory as you possibly can, and use tools like Cthulhu to speed up your music-making process! I think it's a win-win tbh.
You're the man! No one else even mentioned the AU and VST differences.
Ads in an ad... That's like watching TV and having a commercial during a commercial break interrupted with a commercial break of its own.
Anthony Fantano is a very talented man!
Not the first time someone has called me Anthony Fantano lol
Finally a straight forward video showing how to use Cthulhu to trigger your VST instruments! Thanks mate!
You don't even have to come up with your own 4 chord progressions anymore! What a time to be alive!
Man, you gotta wake up... nothing leads to nothing :D
just fyi for anyone that finds, just both arm both tracks at the same time and you won't have to play the song back just to record the full midi chord sequence into your Synth track
I imagine a bunch of tentacles playing when I hear those arpeggios.
Hahahahahah
Hahaha

@@SmolecBeats I was going to say that!!

How can i re-harmonise my basic triad major chord to complex minor jazzy chords? This is the problem.
I don't know why people have such a hard time setting this up. I literally figured it out by myself, I think the UI is very intuitive and self-explanatory.
you're just watching for shits then?
Bought the preset pack, very happy, Thanks!!!
looks like the needle drop has another channel!
This is really dope, will deffinetly help with work flow
you did that procedure, can I do in logic pro also ok? in logic pro how to use? please make a video. please
Your voice is so "retro" lol love it
thanks for this but i noticed you barely discussed about arps.
nice guy nice product
I'm trying to get the midi information out of Cthulhu like at 11:30 in FL, and I cant for the life of me do it. any ideas?
If you still need help I'm here.
yea me too
Bluecat Patchwork
i know how to do this, it takes some creative routing,. i can make a vid about it if you want
you need 3rd party software (loopMIDI), or you can record the cthulhu sine wave audio into edison, then use "export score to piano roll" feature to save as midi notes
for those who use FL studio u open a pather and serum or any plugins then add vfx key mapper
Rholalalalala, god damn you inspired me man!! I opened Ableton, i loaded the TR-303 VST and Cthulu!!! MAGIC ACID ARP!!!
Where is the "generate Chord" part, you said in the beginning?

I didn't know David Cross did music production tutorials!
David Cross and Anthony Fantano’s love child
So what about people who use logic, studio one, Cubase ect any idea how to get the midi notes in your piano roll just like how you do in this daw
Thanks for the help!

Great video! Is it possible to create your own chord packs? How do these guys do it?
Is there a way to play the chords of Cthulhu with the preset of another VST, like this is made in this Video with Serum, in the FL Studio?
can anyone link me to the future bass drop lead of the second song? what preset is it?
looks a bit complex but great sounds 6:00

Ganja White Nights "Champaigne"?
How to use that with Digital Performer??
Comment utiliser CTHULHU Sur Reason ? C'est une galère quand même

A lot bla-bla-bla!
The real information you need starts 4 minutes after the boring introduction.

sucks... video's too long... too many unrelated stuff said that I couldn't watch longer... Scaler VST's better!
