thank you so much. I have a 60 year old trumpet that I haven't touched in a year and I used another oil since I didn't have the valve oil. I didn't have the touch so I used the steam from boiling water in a tea kettle. takes longer but works. thank you again.
You have to be pretty daft to think that vegetable oil would have worked. That's like using crisco for cork grease XD

Thanks for this very helpful video! I'm currently fighting stuck valves on an alto horn I got for $50 at a pawn shop. All the valves and slides feel like they're glued in place. Just now got the bottom caps off the valves and there's a ton of green gunk and crusty stuff. So looks like I'll be trying this method asap

That set of pliers I need to get in my growing trumpet tool kit.
I used WD-40 on an old horn before field practice when I was in HS. I wiped off the excess and the valves worked pretty well but the fumes just about made me sick. It seemed like a good idea at the time!! 😂Thanks for sharing!

My trumpet was for rent sooooo...
I've never run into vegetable oil, but what I have run into both on valves and trombones slides is someone using motor oil, or horns that reak of Brasso. I'd love to hear his suggestions on cleaning that kind of mess up.....
i've heard so many times cocnut oil is just as good as regular valve oil. I have been really curious to try it out but after watching this i don't really know any more... XD

Can you do a chem dip to get the vegetable oil off?
It even applies to woodwind instruments because if you used vegetable oil to lubricate sax keys, they would become stiff.

Mineral oil or sometimes called air tool oil is good.
I’ve got a old German Acme trumpet. It’s beautiful,but the valves are a little slow. It’s got springs on the bottom of the valves .It uses old style Conn type springs .Do you think I should use some compound on the valves..?
Probably not because old valves are too loose already. There are many reasons why valves are slows and lapping compound addresses only a few of them. I would try everything else first.
What about a solvent or penetrating oil? Boiling water?

this one of those moments when I thought I saw everything, but no. a veggie bach! ugh. myself, I would have started heating with a hair dryer to be gentle and safe, then progressed to a flame.

The trumpet I currently own, Its 3rd Valve is also stuck... However it got stuck due to another trumpet player of mines setting it right under me as i was about to sit down. I've checked for dents and everything and nothing appears to be wrong with it. I've applied valve oil to it to see if it'll help and nothing has worked. I've managed to later get out the 3rd valve and do a deep clean of it and the rest of the trumpet to see if it'll help out. So far its only allowed me to press it down, but it gets stuck once its pressed down. Is there any way you can help me with this situation?? How can I get it fixed?? (In case you need to know Its a Glory Bb Trumpet bought from amazon from a company Named Glory)
It sounds like the knuckles on the 3rd slide were pushed into the casing causing the casing to be out of round. I did a video on something similar to this several years ago on a different channel. The situation was a little different, but you should be able to get the idea of what is going on and you can probably fix it yourself. You just need to be careful or you can do more serious damage.

I have a slightly sticky valve caused by a slightly moved tuning slide bent during shipping. If I pull on the second tuning slide the problem is fixed temporarily but after a while the first valve starts getting sticky again. Any advice to fix permanently?

I do have one, but the chemicals do not work well on this substance.
I will do a video on chemicals when I get a chance. I hope it will be within the next month or two, but it may be longer.

@@TheBrassandWoodwindShop Using organic solvents such as alcohol or acetone (Probably the solvent that you use to remove lacquer) should be quite effective. Acid won't dissolve vegetable oil.
I was screwing in my third valve and I got the finger cap stuck crooked. Help!

I would say to put some drops of valve oil, or if you have it, use some slide/cork grease (the kind you squeeze out) and try to work it carefully. If that doesnt work or if you are unsure if it works, just take it to an instrument repair shop or somewhere a professional is who actually knows what they are doing.
This does apply to french horns, valve trombones, tubas, baritone horns, etc. any instrument w/ Valves. You should never use vegetable oil on valves because it becomes sticky.

Thats interesting, I like buying instruments and playing, and I fix instruments because sometimes they aren’t in great condition (I also fix my friends instruments a lot. A trumpet i bought had this green stuff and i thought it was lime deposits. I now know it was vegetable oil 😂. This is pretty funny but makes sense. Plus the trumpet smells horrible and the valve oil look really “old”. It was vegetable oil, definitely. Using heat though would have helped...
If you find that someone with a Bach Strad is using vegetable oil, check for brain damage of the player or check to see if the trumpet is stolen.
Can you use bycicle chain oil on a trumpet?
No, i would not reccomend it, just ask like, a school for valve oil if youre a student, if you arent a student, just buy some valve oil.
I used Mobil #6 velocite oil to lubricate the valve (it's almost transparent and almost odorless. If you find the piston action slower, use #4 instead). I feel that it works better than regular valve oil because it evaporates slower. Moreover, it's so much cheaper.
Don't use random lubricants. Low quality lubricants may be corrosive and sometimes toxic. The lubricant you use must have copper strip corrosion rating 1a.
what do you clean the inside of a trumpet with I heard clr and water to clean?
I have never used CLR, but I would think that it would work well to get off the lime deposits on the inside. I am not sure what it would do to the lacquer though, so be careful not to let it soak for more than about ten minutes.
what is the heating tool called? where can i buy one?
I think it is called a Mini Torch. You can probably get one from your local hardware store, Ferree's Tools, or on the internet.

Help my trumpet valve won't go back into its casing
There are a lot of reasons for that to happen. Was the valve or the casing dented or marred? The best way to diagnose the problem is to take off the bottom valve cap, clean the inside of the casing with a soft rag to get the junk out and then put the valve in bottom end first through the bottom of the casing. See how far the valve goes in without forcing it and then try to figure out where the problem is by how far the valve goes in. I will try to do a video on this within the next few weeks or months.
Where do I get those pliers?
You can get them from a band instrument repair tool supplier such as Allied or Ferree's tools. If you do not have access to these suppliers, you can ask your hardware store. They may have these or something similar in the plumbing section. Ask for "Soft jaw pliers".
vegetable oil and animal oil all degrade/decompose into carboxylic acid over time. They smell terrible and will ruin metals. Spindle oil does pretty good job on valves if you're searching for cheaper alternative (but do be careful that some machine oil/grease may contain additives that you don't want to inhale). Oil the valve frequently and give your trumpet a bath once in a while, it'll always be in good shape.

There are a lot of other reasons for valves to be stuck. I wanted to make sure I got a video of this because it does not happen very often.

i dont think i could have face palmed any harder because if i did i would have knocked myself out. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!? to be fair it likely did work at the time but that dosent mean that was the thing to do. its so easy to find some cheap valve oil online. knowing that someone put vegetable oil in a Stradivarius makes me think that some people that own musical instruments maybe should re-consider owning them for the instruments saftey
