Kia EV9 GT LINE Road Test and Night Drive: This 3-Row Electric SUV is One Of the Best I've Driven

2024 marks the debut of the new EV9, Kia’s first all-electric 3-row model. Built in both Georgia and South Korea, the EV9 has already snagged industry awards and is one of the most anticipated SUVs this year.
In this video, Camera Guy James and I take it for a spin through the highways and backroads of Northern Ontario to bring you this very comprehensive report.

Let’s talk numbers. The EV9 lineup starts with the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) EV9 Light, boasting a 76.1 kWh battery and 215 hp. But hold on-the real star is the AWD GT Line, like my tester. With two motors and a larger 99.8 kWh battery, it packs 379 horsepower, 516 lb-ft of torque, and a range of up to 435 kilometers (around 270 miles).
My test drive took me from Central Ontario to Sudbury-a 450-kilometer journey. The EV9 excels as a long-haul cruiser. Smooth ride quality, minimal noise, and a planted feel make it perfect for those open-road adventures. And the seats? Pure luxury. Trust me, you’ll want to take them inside once you get home.
Switch to sport mode, and the EV9 transforms. Precise steering, low center of gravity, and confident handling make winding roads a joyride. Plus, safety systems like lane-keeping and radar cruise work seamlessly in the background.
The i-PEDAL MAX mode lets you brake and recharge by simply lifting off the throttle, giving your right foot a vacation!
As the sun sets, the EV9’s LED light show begins. Futuristic patterns, high-mounted taillamps, and a sleek dash create an otherworldly vibe. And those LED headlights? They’re spot-on, with precise beams and an automatic high-beam system that’s on the ball. On Sudbury’s Highway 69, the EV9’s high beams cut through the darkness, revealing wildlife warnings and distant corners. And on divided highways, peripheral illumination keeps you in control.

I don't have a family to haul around in an SUV and I'm much more a sports car fan, but on a personal level, of all the ~80k SUV's I've tested (and there have been a few), I found this to be one of the most impressive in memory-- Kia's EV system and the displays / interfaces / features that go with it are very good, you've got the turn signal camera mirrors (a favorite of mine, wish all cars had em), and those seats are beauttiful.
It wouldn't be the first vehicle I'd buy if I was spending 80k, but it'd be high on my list of contenders if I was after an SUV at that price point.
