- In the first episode of our Laos series, we embark on a majestic river cruise for a two-day slow boat journey up the mighty Mekong River from the border town of Huay Xai to the UNESCO world heritage site of Luang Prabang.
With stunning views of the Laos landscape on either side of us, we sit back and unwind with a small group of amazing people as our cares float away in the current.
There are a few stops along the way. On day one, we take a short break in a lowlander village to get a glimpse of what life is like for the villagers along the Mekong.
After a majestic seven hours, we finally arrive at Pakbeng, a quiet little town along the river with a few cute cafes, restaurants, and guest houses. Here we settle in for an early night so that we can return to the boat early in the morning.
Day two is even more awe-inspiring than the first as the mountains get larger and more dramatic. We stop at another riverside village known for its woven handicrafts and Lao rice whiskey. After a stroll through the town, a little shopping, and a taste test, we set off again to our next destination.
Before making it to Luang Prabang, our final destination is Pak Ou Caves, also known as "Statue Cave," named for the hundreds of Buddha statues that adorn the cave. We explore the temples and look in awe at the statues brought here for safety during the Vietnam war and for good luck ever since.
As the sun sets, we enjoy the remaining moments on the vessel that became our home for two days. In this adventure, we truly learn that the journey is just as important, if not more so, than the destination.
We then finally make it to Luang Prabang to begin our exploration of Laos!

Hi both, I traveled up Mea Kong river since I was 16 in yrs old from luang prabang to up north in 1973 it was very beautiful, I am now 64 living in California, so glad you both got to see the beautiful Laos ❤❤

I did this tour in mid February this year after a 3 year wait. It was the highlight of my 6 week trip and I was so sad to get off at the end. I’m going to do it next year for sure!

It was! Everywhere we went, the beauty just kept getting better and better! The Mekong is so incredible.
Great adventure. We did that trip in 2012. Amazing, Magical, Storybook. It’s sad they are building more hydro dams. Some day maybe soon we can’t ride the river like that anymore.

Just by the by, these river cruises don't run every day, so if Nagi's available dates don't work for you, Shompoo Cruise offers a virtually identical product at a similar price on different dates. I did the trip in reverse last year, and it was so great I'm going again this July.

Yup, there were us and eight others on the boat. But they typically seat up to forty, so I imagine it depends on the time of year.
July sounds like an amazing time to see Laos! We’re so jealous!
As far as gear, our basic setup is a Sony A7c and some lenses, and then we used a go pro and our phones for some shots too.
It did seem they were doing some bridge construction, but nothing that slowed our travel down.

It’s not a bad idea. ATM machines were around and can convert for you, but there are a ton of money exchange places.
