    When I paid $500 to have my RV inspected before buying, I used the report to negotiate an additional $3,000 off the price. I also had an mechanic check the engine nd transmission, but by then I told the seller, it would either be a big problem and I would not buy it of if it was a small problem, I would accept it. This was because he was concerned that the second inspection would trigger another round of negotiations. I did not want the seller to sell out from under me after spending $500 for the inspection. The seller was very fair. I did not negotiate on every point as I knew the Roadtrek was 13 years old. So it helped me save money, but also, after making the needed repairs, I felt comfortable driving it all over the country and in to some fairly remote (though not off road) areas.

    Go to the grocery store or deli and acquire a long sheet of white butcher paper. Place the paper on the ground under the vehicle directly below the engine. Start the vehicle and let it idle for 15-20 minutes while you are talking to the current owner and checking out other areas of the car. Now, pull the paper away from the vehicle to inspect for any oil leaks that have dripped onto the paper........... If there is even 1 drop.... Don't buy!!!!!!

    Good information! Pay attention to the marker lights and insure they aren't cracked have been sealed properly. That is a common place for water to start leaking and it can run down the entire side of the RV on the inside of the siding and cause lots of damage. (Ask me how I know) Also you can get on the ground and look at the bottom of the outside walls and check for wood rot from the same leaking water problem where it migrates to the bottom and ruins everything. Also look for rust colored screws on the overhead trim and sidewalls which indicate rusting metal from leaks. This same problem will show up on the overhead bunk inside due to marker light or roof leaks ( ask me how I know about this too). Just watch a few RV repair videos where they take apart an RV roofs and sidewalls to show the damage and you will be amazed at what can happen.

    Thanks for this video. I saw a vid done by an RV dealer who told people what potential problems to look for when buying a NEW RV. He said a new RV sitting on a lot can have water damage just from being out in the weather. He suggested using a moisture meter to check inside the RV ceiling esp corners, inside cupboards, around doors etc. Any place water might collect. I certainly agree esp how fast RV's are being thrown together.

    I bought a used Class C from a local private owner he was the second owner....I did my own inspection And what was most important to me was the Engine/Chassis ...The running or truck part of it and the water leaking ....Most of that was in remarkable shape...NO water stains on the overhead at all....
    I did end up repairing almost everything else as I expected to need to do...But I was able to do all of that myself...so none of it was a huge beget breaker...I replaced the converter and repaired the water heater and furnace...fixed a ton of wiring upgraded all of the lights... both the 12 volt and the 110...and stuff like the marker lights and tail and backup lights and the Onan...and the cruse control..and the window washer...Replaced most of the plumbing including the toilet ....and I replaces all six tires and did the brakes and changed all of the fluids myself and and the shocks and sway bars myself and added air bags ....that is really needed to pull a toad...and replaced a countertop and the microwave...and added a Fan...
    This sounds like a lot but it is routine for ten years on a well maintained RV...and The important stuff is the lack of water leaks and rot and the integrity of the engine.chassis ..That is where you will lose or need to spend big money along with water and rot...
    And never had a single issue with the mechanical stuff.... Engine....Transmission....Steering...Alignment...Brakes...on the road...needing expensive Emergency Repairs Never had a leaking problem...but you do need to keep up with all of your caulking and sealants...

    Knowledge is from learning - thank you for teaching. Stupid is from knowing and ignoring the knowledge. Often knowledge is ignored because of the cost of an inspector, yet pay later for all the unknowns that would have been discovered by an inspector.

    My first time with trailers. Despite an inspection that gave it an all clear, loads of things broke down in the first year. And it took me a while to figure out that the reason the shower had hooks on each corner was because they were probably hanging shower curtains on each side to keep the walls from getting wet and mildewing more inside. Not that the sellers *told* me that...

    When we were looking at RV’s (and remember to check the tires on trailers and 5thwheels as well!) we ran into several with clear water damage and bad seals. Refusals to put out slides or awnings was a huge red flag. And people that couldn’t show or tell us where the electrical, water, and propane was! If the owner doesn’t know how to change the tanks or replace a fuse, I find that concerning. We took over a month to find our rig, with upfront, honest, and informed sellers with maintenance records. And visually inspect the slides and tanks if possible. A cracked tank or leaking plumbing is also a concern.
    After 5 years in wet weather stationary we are starting to lose the seals and have water problems on the inside, because we haven’t been maintain them while we build our house… so it’s good to remember that roof care and seal maintenance is an ongoing process. Although I’m gutting the RV for appliances and going to use it as a flat deck or chicken coop when the house is done this fall. Our original plan was use it for travel or resell, but the years of boondocking and farming have changed that.

    @roberthunter6927 Рік тому +2

    A "musty" smell on entering an RV! It is obviously a sign of mould, and it does not take long to see water damage somewhere, or even mould growing inside a cabinet/drawer or storage space. And obviously, you don't want to sleep or spend any time in confined space like that. It was an older rig, over 20 years old, and the dealer had the temerity to advertise it for about $55,000.
    Engine problems tend to be obvious for people with a little bit of knowledge, but a high cost item are transmissions, particularly automatic transmissions.

  • @YllaStar95970
    @YllaStar95970 Рік тому +23

    An OBD code reader will pay for itself, and give you a deep look at the history of the engine.
    Also check the dates of manufacture of all the glass, and headlights they should be a match.
    Finally lift the hood, and visually check the hinges. Broken paint around the fixing could mean removal, and a frontal collision.
    Ask the owner about their history of the vehicle......If it doesn't match by date what you just found.
    Walk away.😉

    fore what ever it's worth my personal experience is all vehicles are clunkers to some degree or another .. I own & drive & live in vintage vehicles .. My old 1983 Chevy V8 350 G30 one ton motor home suits me well .. it's simple & owner friendly to work on .. roofs still in awesome leak free shape ! I've been living in it for over 3 years now & plan on to death do us part ... very arrow dynamic with a rear covered porch ! It worked great over the road I took a small trip from Florida to Missouri & back to Florida .. it's awesome to travel in it's sweet spot is 55 to 60 miles an hour .. it has bias ply tires lol but they are doing great at that speed with no worries ! I am old & retired & in no hurry ..lol Very dependable little home on wheels .. looks more like a custom built box truck .. yes I fabricated it to be the best it can be & what I am using it for .. lol it sure looks like a old clunker but I'll take it over any thing that's out there for sure ! It fits me to a tee ! lol it's very light weight no over cab upper & the rear was shortened as well for the covered porch ! A true custom classic !

    I think the inspections are great. BUT, what if you don't buy the RV because it has too many serious issues and you paid some bucks for an inspection. What if you paid for the inspection later the Rv starts falling apart. I have been watching Bob since he started doing nomad videos and I bought and read his book. Time and time again, Bob has dissuaded his viewers against RV's because of the maintenance and repair costs. If you are dead set on getting an RV, sure an inspection is probably worth the money, provided you pay once and the RV lasts. Another RV option is getting a relatively new Rv and doing a 20-year mortgage, as long as it is your primary residence. That would be good as long as if you sell you can at least break even. Timbre Nighthawke, who lives out of his Class C and claims he got a 20 year note on a $50K Class C for about $200/mth. Something perhaps to consider.

    She says she's looking at everything but later says not the engine and drivetrain...Bob says he pays for engine checks. Follow Bob's money spent. If you're watching YT, and are a nomad, you already know how to learn new tricks. Learn your plumbing and other mechanical systems, and check it yourself. If you "Ask the owner" you wont get a true estimate to fix it. Focus on slidout mechanisms and if they still make it (a large manuf. went out of business 5yrs ago), check automatic steps, exterior panel joints at the corners and bottom often tells you if the top leaks, Good sealant on top of rotted panels doesn't help. Lean how to see trim screws that wont hold because of rot. Get an estimate for costs of reapplying all roof caulk. Those are the expensive critical areas with big $$$ repairs underneath.

      depends on your needs. in cold, rainy or snowy country cooking/living outdoors is a problem so having indoor living space is important. some people can't live without a toilet, shower, and kitchen sink.

      @@marzsit9833 lol yep at least for the toilet and kitchen sink. I ripped out the tiny RV sink and sacrificed some counter space and two drawers to put in a full size one. Also cooking and cleaning for a couple with an elderly parent you’re hosting for dinner every night. Then tore out the dinette to convert to a storage kitchen island (table top matched the counters!) next to go was the built in jackknife sofa because it was creating a cold zone and mold behind it replaced the late 90’s thetford with a ‘60’s porcelain toilet… and that reminds me…

    Years ago I saw a video where a guy used a quarter to check the outside walls. He tapped it for sound at different sides. Do you know anything about that?
