I just wanted to say I think you handled the issue around this game so smoothly. Full disclosure and not condemning or supporting one way or another. I think the way you were so matter of fact about it is why chat was able to stay mostly amicable about it. I already had a lot of respect for you but the way you handled this just really made me have an even higher respect for you.
Thank you for acknowledging Her Interactives decision, the content warning, and keeping things civil. Not easy to do. All that aside, we see The Hardy Boys in Last train for Blue Moon Canyon and they still gave us 4 other characters so idk why they couldn't here. Same with Kappu cave
My sister and I were just talking about how it would make SO MUCH MORE SENSE if the culprit to turned out to be Andy Jason. It's the same voice actor, most people have played Deception Island, and both games take place in the water. I really have no idea why they chose the culprit that people are least likely to remember for the big reveal.
Or, as he said in his Everything wrong with video, Shorty would have also made sense. Considering he worked for Bess and George's aunt and uncle, and is a treasure hunter. I think he also said that it's the same voice actor. Plenty of characters who would have fit the bill alot better than Dwayne Powers of all people.
I'm so glad you played this one after all. It may be one of the sorely lesser games in the series (right up there in no particular order with Kapu Cave, Shattered Medallion, Twister, and Salem) but it's still got some really good parts, and it's still part of the series. We shouldn't pretend it never happened.
Yeah, this was around the part where their animation imrpoved. I do very much agree those are the weaker games - Trail of the twister is... probably the best of those. Only because the culprit was obvious. Shattered Medallion was just... eh.
I honestly really liked this game for the setting and the puzzles. Even though the mystery aspect wasn't much, it felt like an exploration game and that was fun for me. And the music was great too!
I can never play this game, even when I was gifted this game 10-12 years ago I didn't have the computer to play it. so I'm taking to watching a walkthrough to see what I've missed all these years since the game was released. I've always enjoyed your walkthroughs man, thank you!
It would've been cool if Johnny was actually Jamaican and a treasure hunter who lost everything trying to find El Toro's treasure. That'd be why he seems to live exclusively on his boat/the beach, why fixing the motor is so important, why he moves from island to island a lot. And he just keeps to himself. Maybe he had a treasure hunting partner who betrayed him or something. I also think it'd be neat if Bess wasn't actually kidnapped, but accidently fell into El Toro's resting place. All the movements and weird things about the island are just Bess setting off booby traps trying to get out. Maybe Johnny could decide to help Nancy find the treasure (and Bess, but he's mostly just in it for the gold) then betray her at the very end. It'd be cool to see a game without a defacto "culprit". Like in Castle Malloy. Fiona was just trying to finish her father's work and Matt happened to stumble into the lab where he kept setting the alarm off.
I actually think the driving in this one is much easier than Secret of the Old Clock. You don't have to worry about gas or flat tires lol. And once you're familiar with where everything is there are a ton of shortcuts you can take.
I heard in a sort of "history of" video about either this series or HER that apparently it was selling pretty high on eBay for awhile right after they discontinued it, like they were discontinuing one of the best games or something 🤦♀️
I remember being so disappointed in this ending. I was playing these as they came out and played every one of them except Stay Tuned For Danger, so when the villain was revealed I was like who?
I like how Nancy sees a pile of gold, jewels and priceless jewelry and then a shoddily carved rock square that seems to be a vague clue. and in her mystery addict mind she assumes the stone map is the treasure the kidnappers are after and not the half a billion dollars in gold dubloons.
I never want to hurt anyone's feelings. Here are my main complaints: 1. No Flashback to Dwayne Powers 2. Different voice actor for Dwayne 3. HER should change the ending, or the character, and republish this for PC. A few of their old staff could probably fix this one issue on contract in 4 months time. A truly creative solution would quickly fix this.
I agree they could change it easily and would be the best thing to do so this game could live on...but probably only with the old team...just feels unlikely now
I've been wanting to play this one myself, it doesn't open no matter how many times I re-download it, rename the folder, or do the compatibility mode. Does anyone have any tips?
If we really look at each game with sensitive eyes, we will find a LOT of harmful stereotyping and instances where they really dropped the ball with people's cultures, accents, lore, and so on. The Irish guy in the pub in Castle Malloy was a ridiculously offensive caricature and Fiona herself I found an incredibly poor handling of someone with mental issues and mutism. The whole over the top presentation about "the little people" and all of that. It's the obvious tropes. Like all Irish people believe in fairies. They could have used some Gaelic and totally missed out on that. HER should remember that they are representing a people, a culture, nations etc. It's not enough to just be sensitive to POC. Everyone should be given the same respect.
That's just how the world is now you can make fun of Caucasian people all you want but you better not misrepresent POC it's not right it's very harmful but that's the world we live in now
I was surprised they added in 1801, 1845, and 1916 because those are pretty dark parts of Irish history (yes, even 1916), and Ogham was a nice touch but I absolutely agree that the ridicule aimed at Donal (and the characters botching the pronunciation of his name after literally having one of them say, "It's like Donald but without the last d,") was bordering on xenophobia. Every single character, even Nancy, Ned, Bess, and George mocked him in some way for something specifically Irish. And since there were English characters in the game, it really was not a good look.
They have a lot of those issues in other games as well- and I understand it's of the time and all but it still makes them unpleasant to play. It's also disappointing because these games arguably strive to be fairly educational, and I don't think mocking people's names and cultures is particularly conducive to that.
As much as I accept their decision to discontinue this game, this was the first Nancy Drew game I ever played/completed and will always have a special place in my heart... honestly the only part I truly hated was the rock climbing puzzle. I wish that tossing the sea urchin to the monkeys kept them from throwing rocks at nancy and george, but by the time you finish that puzzle, there's never a need to rock climb ever again... except back down.
I have a love hate relationship with this game. i mean it probaly has the most puzzles of any game in the series and the hole hunting for pirate tresure is a cool idea but the mystory is soo poorly done i mean theres only 1 suspect so its soo obvius who it is and the reveal at the end about it being a villen from a past game would have been cool if they had not been from one of the "least enjoyable" games in the series. not to mention the ended feels a bit meh considering you never get to confrunt the villen and after all that setup it feels kinda anticlimatic even if you do find the tresure and get the extended ending" put it this way following a tresure hunt is something nancy dose alot but normaly it is along side a actual well written mystory this game is basicly just 1 long tresure hunt where we already know how its kinda gonna end from the second we realise theres only 1 other person on the island. im not saying its perfect but shadow ranch atleast had a supprising reveal of who the villen was and had some good story reveals thoughout the game and the tresure hut was quite well put together "and anything that dosnt have that awful awful awful monkey board game gets 10000 points just for that"
I hope HER is remaking this as Ransom of the Seven Keys. I didn't buy the game because the besides trying to finish a few Nancy Drew games at the time, the puzzles and design didn't interest me.

I absolutely adore it when your children appear in the videos, it is so heart warming to hear you interact with them :)

They should remake this game. They could improve the story even.

I'm sure you've finished it by now and are satisfied in knowing you really weren't missing much 😂
Oh my golly Mary sounds like a young lady! It is amazing to see you grow since the first walk-through ❤️ 💖 ✨️ Proud of you Michael!
the real culprit is Johnny's Jamaican-Irish-French accent. absolutely criminal.
A better twist ending would be if the monkeys and CouCou teamed up together to kidnap Bess and Nancy had to play a game with them to free Bess.
I never knew until now that people didnt like this game 😂 Its not one of my favourite puzzle wise but i like it! Thanks for playing it 👍🏼
Nancy is a lot more chill about her friend being kidnapped this time around.
Yeah kinda wish she wasn't so chill about it haha

I know you were hesitant to play this but I'm so glad you did just for the simple fact that we got the girls back to back like that lol
Hooray! I voted for this game. One of my faves, who cares about HerInteractive anymore. 😉
the whole culprit reveal of this game is and was one of my favorites.
Still one of my favorties.
Okay Mary being too cool for Nancy Drew and sounding so grown up makes me so sad! 🥲

You were hit in the head by a bunch of monkeys? You're off the case!
I had no clue it was discontinued for this reason! It was one of the few that I never purchased and played

Did you turn off your Security Software because sometimes your security will think that it is a virus.

I think they could have only had one monkey and another suspect. Even if that suspect was just another Dwayne character.
