So it was the late 90's. This is a few years after Kurt Cobain died. Music was in the grips of the Napster revolution; it was the beginning of the end of the music industrial label system, but it hadn't happened yet. This was pre-Columbine, pre-9/11. Rock was really groping around looking for that next big thing. It was the era of Limp Bizkit and Korn (not that there is anything wrong with them); it was the gap between Grunge (if you could call it that) and New Metal. Deftones and Incubus were really big at the time. And then comes this song and this video, and it was unlike anything anyone had seen or heard. And then Spiders came out, and people began to realize that SOAD was a seriously talented band. They'd shed the kind of psycho-circus, punk aesthetic but retain their signature style. SOAD has aged rather well. Hope they come back together to make more music,
As a 40-something that lived through this strange era of music, I 100% concur. This was most definitely out of left field. I’m not a personal fan but, I can’t deny how original and creative this is…
@@braindedpxl We lived through strange times in life and music, fellow 40-something. ;)
I got to see SOAD and Incubus at Ozzfest, just before they both got big. Amazing shows.
Armenian sound really
@@chrismunoz7859 certainly prominent in that mix. There's a lot of punk, grunge, and opera too.
Please stop apologizing for stopping the video, we know youtube will remove your video if you don't pause it a bunch of times and that said:
I think i speak for the most of us when i say, we are HERE for YOUR voice and for YOUR two cents on our favourite bands and tracks.
We're not here for the music, we are here for you, cause we've already heard the songs a billion times.
YES! EXACTLY!
This was their first video/ single
"P.L.U.C.K." was the perfect ending to that debut album and is so underappreciated and underrated and commonly over looked
P.L.U.C.K. is an amazing song, and it's a shame that one of their most powerful songs (IMO) gets forgotten
revolution the only solution
@@realisticphish one of the BIGgest factors, it didn't have any music video to do an extra push 😮💨
Watching Aileen, then hearing Sugar. I might go into a diabetic coma since both are so sweet 😊 always sending positivity and love❤
This is the best SOAD album, and i will forever die on that hill.
Not minimizing anything they did afterward but man.. that first album hits sooo hard.
Toxicity is the tour I saw them on so all they had was that and the first album. So lots of gems! I do like their later stuff too but those two albums hold special places in my heart.
The descending harmonic guitar riff in War blew my mind. A lot of great songs through their discography but that first album was chef's kiss.
You are 100% right. I will not entertain a single opinion that Toxicity is better than self-titled. This is one of my favorite albums of all time.
real
Exactly.
This is the first SOAD song i ever herd and it began my life long love of the band.
Same here!!🤘🔥🤘
Its the "oh... kay" to stank face while bobbing back and forth for me 😂
Great reaction
I still remember when I first seen the video on MTV in late 90s. I was just getting into rock/metal around that time. I was so captivated by it. I remember thinking "what am I am watching!?", but in a good way! Then I caught the video for "Spiders" and I was hooked on this band.
Yes nothing like system of the down to get your blood pumping. Another amazing reaction
Soad is one of the best bands.
That Music Video was from the MTV Era, that’s why it was censored
System of a Down is a solid kick in the chest. The first two albums are exactly how you described them, outspoken and unapologetic. Their simplicity in style and powerful message cut through all the bullshit of what was popular at the time. I think I saw them around 15 times in the early 2000s. The energy they brought to any venue was so explosive, I'll never forget them!
This was the song that introduced me to them. My local alt rock radio station played this sometimes, and 13 year old me was amazed.
I had been learning and performing Carnatic vocal music since the age of 5 and was dipping my feet into heavier music.
I was acclimated to screaming by Dragon Ball Z, ya know.... the whole cathartic explosion of power, very suitable for metal lol.
So I was in the perfect place for metal to get its talons into me. I already loved Slipknot, Rage Against The Machine, Disturbed, Korn, Deftones, etc.
And here was a man who screamed his head off, but also was unafraid of proudly showcasing his culture's musical traditions through vocal ornamentation, which was actually very much in the same quadrant of musical space as the type I practiced. I wanted to be in a metal band someday and if Serj can do it, so could I!
SOAD is quite meaningful to me for that reason. Eventually after I entered highschool, I kinda moved on to heavier metal genres and got into death/thrash/black metal, but to this day I'm still grateful that SOAD let a South Asian-American kid dream.
Sugar listening Sugar. Greetings from Belgrade, Serbia. ❤️🖤♠️
Probably the most innovative band in rock and metal. Totally unique.
Sugar is the song that turned me on to SOAD in 98..Was up late one night and seen their video 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
this song was one of my dads “on repeats” i’ve known every word since i was a kid! awesome seeing you react to this
I saw SOD open up for Slayer and Fear Factory back in the 90's. Never heard of them before that but they made a huge impression on me at that show. They are now one of my favorite bands.
OMG!!!! That reaction was EPIC!!!!! I loved it SOOOO MUCH!!!! They kinda had you stumblin over your words!! That's a DAMN REACTION!!!! You should rock the dancing more often!! I absolutely loved that one!!!! I love some S.O.A.D. been rockin these guys since '00 I think?? "Sugar" is one of my favorite songs to play, it's so damn fun!! NAILED IT AS ALWAYS!!! G.O.A.T. love the videos as always.....Thanks for all you do!!!
For a change of pace with SOAD, you should check out, "Lonely Day." Daron has the lead vocals with Serj backing him. A rare ballad that amazes listeners to the diversity of SOAD.
I can't see the video you are watching too clear but the censorship you might be referring to is a quick clip of a sign saying, "Aspertame Kills."
I love how you get when the excitement hits you 😊😍
The subtitles really do help here, the words go by so fast.
I don't think you've had the band Nemophila on your channel yet. They actually covered this song, and a few others, earlier this year. Nemophila are yet another incredibly talented all woman metal band from Japan, and a favorite of mine.
I love this song. I forgot about that intro. Thank you for the reaction.
Thanks for watching this with subtitles. :)
Just gonna throw this out there Aileen, but if you want to some more Serj, I can recommend one from a few years back from the Metal: Hellsinger OST called “No Tomorrow”. Serj is the vocalist for the track and damn he does NOT disappoint
The most fun I've had watching one of your reactions, Aileen. Thank you!
sooo glad youve been uploading alot again!!
This was the song that introduced me to System of a Down and it has been my favorite of theirs ever since.
I remember playing this song to a band for the first time in London in 99 and they were like.. "damn. Dope." And they were a tough crew back then 👀
Love the new reaction videos Aileen and really enjoy the streams on twitch ❤. Love you feral familia
Great reaction aileen. I love it when you talk about how the music makes you feel. Hope you are having a wonderful day with Arya and relaxing ✌️❤️
Your reaction was beautiful. This song is insane. So calm then insane and heavy all in one. Love this song.
This is the first song I heard from SOAD and loved their music ever since. The best part of their music is that the lyrics have meaning and the melody is evolving as it goes. Pitch and tempo changes with Serg and Darren vocal range and harmony, it's hard to find a bad song.
This song talks about something other than sugar, IYKYK.
This is still my all-time favorite S.O.A.D. song! I love all the extreme changes in vibe and tempo.
Man you are ON these uploads Aileen!! It’s been a hot minute since I listened to old SOAD… nice!
this was the first SOAD song i heard when it was new on the radio. its so nostalgic for me. need the uncensored version tho haha
have not heard this one in awhile!!! THANKS Aileen!!!
Hi Aileen how always great reaction this song is so incredible Especially the last part.❤
This whole album is just bonkers. Pure gold! 🤘
Thanks for reaction 🔥🔥🔥
Yep!! That just happened!! Mindgasim!! Enjoy!!
I remember hearing this as jed's catch of the day on KROQ. The best part, he played the uncensored version....
Legends! 💯 their music library is soo over looked, by the mainstream..a lot of greatness! 🔥
Listen to every song on the first album. Suite-pee, suggestions, spiders, war, just that whole album rocks
That was a really fun song, and a new one to me. Love the dancing along to the song, and definitely no worry about the searing.
This was a perfect reaction for a first timer...lol. Somehow you popped up on my feed this morning and simply for reacting to this specific song, you earned a new sub today!
Literally same! lol.
@@killinglonliness88 idk if you have content, but your name takes me way back to the Razorblade Romance album by HIM...I'll sub you too if you're a creator, hahaha!
@@killinglonliness88 I'm aware that Killing Loneliness was on the dark light album...just made me remember some stuff from that era, lol
I wanna say, this was probably one of my songs by SOAD, if not my first song hearing them so I’m even more excited for this reaction from you 😭🖤
This song and video are an absolute assault of the senses!!
You have been on quite the mission yoooo 😅 been a while
This band is perfect.
Now, you should react to Nemophila's cover of this song.
Nice reaction, listened to System since their second album came out, got all of them since ofc, Their music is so entertaining, sometimes people don't even get the anger and resentment behind some of the messages they convey. Glad you enjoyed! 😀
This is a censored version of the clip for TV in '98, on CD there is no *bleep*ing censorship! (pretty sure the CD version is on youtube too, just lookup any song with "dirty" "uncensored" or "CD version" attached to it, lot of rock/rap isn't getting through the algorithm anymore, might have to dig a bit)
This whole album is amazing! 💯🤘🏼🖤
Two other tracks from System of a Down to check out: B.Y.O.B and Prison Song.
love it!
I saw them at ozzfest 98 and 99 for this albums tour cycle, and again in 02 during the toxicity cycle; as well as with slipknot on the pledge of allegiance tour mere weeks after 911 on the same album cycle. Those shows were so crazy and im glad i saw them just before they entered the stratosphere
LOVE this song. so good. so so good.
This was the first message from SoAD, honestly I had the privilege to see them live during their debut tour, and they are one of those bands that were on the same level of Machine head at the time in terms of hype, and they lived up to every amount of it
When I first heard this track by SOAD back in 98' it was OVER! I immediately bought their debut CD and played the shit out of it, over and over and over again. It never gets old.
I turned my then 5-year-old at the time on to SOAD because he couldn't help but listen to it, and they became one of his favorite bands to this day thanks to "Suugarr!"
This song is still my top 3 songs from them and now my 3 year old daughter won’t stop saying “SUGAR” 🤣🤣
god, imagine hearing this in the late 90s. it knocks the wind out of you even today, and this was what they STARTED with. hell of a first single.
This song is like sugar infecting our minds collectively lol. Also the looking respectfully comment LMAOO 😂 And the guitars in the verse makes me wanna do the Happi emote LOL
Great song and reactions
You should check out maximum the hormone if you haven’t. I would start out with their song “Yoshū Fukushū”
I remember when I first heard this back in the day, I had the same reaction lol. I knew I had to know more about this band and I've been a fan ever since, even though they actually didn't have a very long run before a lot of inactivity save for occasional concerts. And that opening skit, from a late 90s video is SOOO PERFECT for today, with the attempts by our government to shut down TikTok cause they have become a news outlet and organization tool for causes that they and the corporate media don't like and with Meta itself with zero notice shutting off any political content from peoples feeds on Insta and Facebook, they don't like that so many people are awake to how badly we are screwed on a daily basis and so they are busy doing all they can to distract and outright ban any news or info sources that don't push their specific propaganda.
1st sonf i heard from and it blew my mind!!
I used to sing this at karaoke. It’s fun. Heroin is a hell of a drug
Seems to me you've been needing some system for a while! Awesome video, now I need some system too !
Man, the censored version just doesn't hit the same.
HAHAHAHAHA!! Love the reaction
Your faces are perfect, and exactly what I was hoping for 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻🔥
#SOAD #STANKFACE #SUGARRRR
The first album was the best one for me. Great song
U upload so much😭 but i love it
Love this song😎
Sick new world 2 here I come!!
This song got me into System
HELLO ALIEEN
Time for SOAD: Question! 🤘😈🔥
I agree with you. The topics SOAD covers are sometimes crazy and it’s like they let their vocals and their instrumentals embody that madness
Hi Aileen,
I don't know if someone has already suggested this to you, but since you mentioned multiple times in your various videos that you like reacting to and experiencing new bands I thought I'd suggest something totally different to what you normally try listening to - The HU.
They are a heavy metal Mongolian band that use traditional instruments mixed with heavy metal sound and throat singing. I've never heard of them until a few years back and am completely in love with their sound. It would be amazing if you could give them a listen and react to their Wolf Totem song.
Thank you also very much for all of your reaction videos - really enjoy watching them a lot! 😁
You should react to Bucketheads most emotional live version of "Soothsayer" it's an audio rollercoaster.
*Prison Song* by SOAD should be your next track. And do choose the lyric video for that one.
"One more thing Dude. Do ya gotta use so many curse words?"
"What the fuck are you talkin about, man?"
What a way to debut
I always enjoy just pointing out that they also have a song about pizza toppings.
Let's not forget the one about riding a pogo stick.
Hell yea. This and Spiders were 2 of the earlier songs I learned on guitar.
"Looking respectfully" lol
That intro though, and the video and lyrics, it's so incredibly poignant, especially watching it today so many years later, nothing ever changes...
They have a unique style/sound for sure. I love their song BYOB.
We need more SOAD here!!!!
heyyy do you like the manga berserk? cause like theres this really good deathcore band called "brand of sacrifice", that is kind of berserk inspired. their songs "exodus" and "purge" are pretty good, and i recommend those ones :)
Beautiful reaction to this System of a Down video 😊👍 I went back and watched all of your reactions and I have to say that this band who is from Armenia yes they are Christian in a sense that there is Christian basics in Armenia... You hit the nail on the head this band speaks social commentary with little regard to what others may think of their commentary..they're speaking truth and truth has a way of getting out and making sense 😊👍 Your analysis is spot on you are not overthinking you are having a great grasp on what they are saying... For this particular reaction video the way the world is they don't want the people to know what's going on and when per chance the people do figure out what's going on those in charge yes spank a little sugar on the situation to calm down protesting angst and just tell the people to look the other way no concern here nothing to see here... The band uses their platform to tell the truth about the events of the day Have a great day you and Arya 😊👍
Loving her vibe, she can move.
i'm just waiting patiently for 'highway song', 'soil' and 'know' to come along and absolutely melt face!
This entire album is 10/10. People talk about Toxicity but it has nothing on this absolute masterpiece.
Crazy expressions (indeed). Besides the drummer (stern, talented and BARELY movies)
I remember when this song first was released. 😂 I was like 17 and we used to drive around blasting it. 🤣🤘🏻😎🤘🏻Ah good memories. Find it with the curses in its much better.
OH YES FINALLY GOT SOME SOAD ON HERE!!!!
SerJ is a beast ❤
It indeed does make you babble. Not like an idiot though. Love the stuff and keep it up. 😍😍
The end 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
This was the first single and video from their first major label album in 1998
