I work at a used car dealer who specializes in flood cars, you would be suprised how many cars we have saved with fully submerged cars and engines full of water or even ice when they sit in the winter
I'm skeptical about a 650S engine working in a P1. According to wikipedia "McLaren and Ricardo redeveloped the M838T engine for use in the McLaren P1. The engine has been upgraded to optimise cooling and durability under higher loads. The engine block has also been modified to incorporate an integrated electric motor as part of a hybrid drive train."
He likely means that it would more or less fit in there and could be used as a replacement with I assume some modifications, but it’s probably similar enough.
The M838T engine and transmission are exactly the same in the MP4-12C, 650S, 675LT, and the P1. The differences are in the boost levels from the factory, and some upgrades to the coolant tank, dry sump pump, and some clamps. All upgrades can be retrofitted to any of the cars as they just replace the old parts. For the P1, there is a difference in the housing to accommodate the electric assist motor on the housing. P1 is rumored to have better pistons, but other than that, you could technically retrofit it with any of the previous gen engines as long as you swap out the housing for the electric motor. There are plenty of 900 plus RWHP MP4-12Cs, so the engine is pretty stout.
Current owner (who has experience rebuilding a totaled McLaren) said he believes the engine will be salvageable with a total rebuild. Some of your individual estimates were different from his, but you both came to about the same total estimate. He believes he can get it done substantially cheaper himself though, going to be interesting to see.
Houston is right, except the motor costs more. but tavarish has a different business model. he us using the p1 to generate youtube income. the videos over 1-2 years him and all the other car guys will make will bring millions all together so the cost for the car and the repair is irrelevant
@@tektkite7255 actually Tavarish said he will not bring substantial money from UA-cam ads, to outright pay all the money he has to pay for retail parts for the build but he will make it work however he can to get it done over time through sponsors and whatever he can do himself like he did on the 675LT
@DATAPUSHER Freddy has said because of the unusual materials this car is made of there's surprisingly little corrosion. He hasn't seen the transmission much yet, and he says the turbos are totally seized, but the engine turns and is totally rebuildable.
The engine wasn't running when it was in the water. I'd disassemble the engine and trans and thoroughly clean every single part, replace all the seals, anything that would go into an engine and trans refresh. I suspect any rust would be film on the surface, not heavy pitting, same for the engine cylinder walls. I expect the crosshatch pattern should still be there. Worst case a ring of rust that the piston rings wipe away the first few turns by hand, heads off. You have to make sure there's nothing that floated through an open valve It would have to be a passion project still. I'd take as long as it took to get good replacement parts for anything that absolutely had to be replaced. It might cost more than it's worth, at the time, but long term it will go up in value, and it has a story. Document the process of rebuilding it on video so that any potential new owner can see what was done and gain some trust in the car, aside from the assumed running, cleaned up, fixed up, car. The price is high for a totaled car, but I wouldn't turn it into a backyard hill jumper.
With tavarish removing the hybrid system and making a high hp build instead this prediction seems pretty spot on! With a build like this only way to make the money back is make content on it.
The biggest issues is the tub being filled with water. It’s hallow and there is aluminum plates fused into the monocoque.. so you have to drill the tub to access the backside of that to stop the corrosion.. If you can’t do that, everything he’s talking about, doesn’t mean squat…
I think Lanzante will be interested. They will either make it a P1 GTR, or a P1 Spider (for their limited run). The title won't matter outside of the US, as Lanzante will (effectively) re-title the vehicle. If I'm right, you owe me a hat! LOL
All of the hype this car is getting should help Tavarish make some money rebuilding it. Houston is spot on with his pricing if one were trying to flip it, but Tavarish is doing it for the clicks.
The P1 is an absolutely sexy car hands down seeing that car in this condition is heartbreaking and i think it's worth saving its worth the time and effort but 800k reserve is insane and i agree with Houston on that if they lower the reserve it would be an awesome project and the HDK kit with some Houston spice on it this would be the most badass P1 in the world
it's not about fixing that car it is about project, youtube content if you think about it in this way sure it worth it. If you go and search on youtube about P1 rebulding you will not find single one. Even if you sell this car as a spair parts it will return the money you pay for especially if you fix them.
Wait you quoted the battery at 150k a 12 volt battery does not cost 150k mate were do you go shopping. You can get a battery at your local parts store from between $80 - $200.
Salt water flood, the body is really the only thing salvageable.. I would put the body on a custom tube chassis and build a built 2J in it or something..
After watching Freddy for almost 5 years I am sure it will be a lot more than giving it a go, after his 675LT he can get this P1 looking great. and having @Matt Armstrong with him I am sure parts may be a easier option..
I don’t know what you guys heard but it is impossible to ever register a flooded car. Look it up! this thing is going to end up like the Pelican Bugatti. Doing the rounds from insurance lot to optimistic shop and again for years to come. Too bad, it's (was) a great looking car. Ditch the hybrid, throw in a 650S or even LS repower in there and it'll be a fun driver for someone who gives no ducks.
You have to remember too that was salt water and brackish water so the wiring in that car is completely fried along with the battery and a complete electrical system I agree with you though it would be a cool off-road project dumping LS in it and make a thousand horsepower tube chassis and just beat it through the desert
I must be missing something here as I have just finished watching Tavarish re build & test drive the P1, the videos have been around for a while so I don't think spoilers are needed. I agree $800k is too high for this car. $100k-150k may be a lil low in my opinion as well. Id assume a $250k-300k price range would be max in my opinion.
I suspect this was will end at a top bid of 300-400. Nowhere near 800k. I have seen homes collapse on themselves because a bank or insurance company wants 30-40% above what it’s worth. (Foreclosures etc). Might even be lower with the dead title.

Current owner (who has experience rebuilding a totaled McLaren) said he believes the engine will be salvageable with a total rebuild. Some of your individual estimates were different from his, but you both came to about the same total estimate. He believes he can get it done substantially cheaper himself though, going to be interesting to see.
We are all rooting for freddy
Yeah and he's doing it for the reason of making it his own thing and in the end being able to have his all time dream car.
Perfect breakdown Houston. Thoughtful
The sheer amount of hype that Tavarish is getting plus a sponsor for the build will make the $575k price bearable
Here after seeing Tavarish just purchased this car. Think he will pull it off though.
Get Tavarish on this! The off road idea would be great way keep and still drive it.
annnnndddd he got it
Seems like the real fight is between the value as parts vs the UA-cam content value
That was a brilliant assessment Houston, we can all see why you are so successful, you go into every detail and know your subject so well
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂
“The shocks are hydraulic”
At that price point might as well send it back to the McLaren factory and get it completely rebuilt through them.
Yup... Exactly!
I just bought 2 hurricane Ian specials and I’ve never seen insurance take so many reserves off. Literally every car reserve was taken off.
Houston can you do a follow up to this video now that we know Freddy has the car?
The biggest issues is the tub being filled with water. It’s hallow and there is aluminum plates fused into the monocoque.. so you have to drill the tub to access the backside of that to stop the corrosion..
If you can’t do that, everything he’s talking about, doesn’t mean squat…
I think Lanzante will be interested. They will either make it a P1 GTR, or a P1 Spider (for their limited run). The title won't matter outside of the US, as Lanzante will (effectively) re-title the vehicle. If I'm right, you owe me a hat! LOL
This would be a good use for it. I'd rather this than them modify an existing good OEM P1
lmfao, no.
Umm.. 🤔I believe you owe Tavarish a hat, a shirt, a pants, shoes and socks 🙄😏❗🤣😂
@@DOLEWDREW Just a hat! LMAO
Great: 🙄now I have a visual in my head of Tavarish driving a restored P1 wearing only a hat😭🤨❗😂🤣@@bob808
All of the hype this car is getting should help Tavarish make some money rebuilding it. Houston is spot on with his pricing if one were trying to flip it, but Tavarish is doing it for the clicks.
That P1 is right down the road from me, it is not just water it was salt water talk about corrosion it will set in and make things much worse.
Did your house also get destroyed
@@yeahok115sureNo we were lucky, minor damage. No power for 10 days.
The P1 is an absolutely sexy car hands down seeing that car in this condition is heartbreaking and i think it's worth saving its worth the time and effort but 800k reserve is insane and i agree with Houston on that if they lower the reserve it would be an awesome project and the HDK kit with some Houston spice on it this would be the most badass P1 in the world
Yeah anyone thinking they can get a "budget" hypercar is deluding themselves and they should just get a good supercar
Bruh it’s a car 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Suspension, wheels, tires, and like you said hydraulics for the wing and others components.
it's not about fixing that car it is about project, youtube content if you think about it in this way sure it worth it. If you go and search on youtube about P1 rebulding you will not find single one.
Even if you sell this car as a spair parts it will return the money you pay for especially if you fix them.
Tavarish just bought it and will it will be a challenge to bring it back to life.
Wait you quoted the battery at 150k a 12 volt battery does not cost 150k mate were do you go shopping. You can get a battery at your local parts store from between $80 - $200.
The P1 battery is more like a Tesla battery. The upgraded version was just announced at $156,000 by McLaren.
@@dezzyd1 so just get a Tesla battery the difference is a badge they are both made by Panosonic
I don’t think you mentioned it but the labor involved in the rebuild would be insane if the buyer isn’t doing it themselves
There is most definitely a person wanting to prove the naysayers wrong. All while pouring buckets of 💰 on it with little updates
You're crazy if you buy this brotha 👀
Waste of 💰
Had the pleasure to see the VP4 many times out in Arizona!
I cant believe the idiot tow driver put the hook right thru the rear wheel.
Ruined the wheel, bet the Drivetrain is fucked too
Salt water flood, the body is really the only thing salvageable.. I would put the body on a custom tube chassis and build a built 2J in it or something..
Freddy is one of Two UA-camrs that could pull this off..
Tavarish is going to give it a go.
Look it up!
I was buying a flooded C8 and I called a registration company and they stoped me from buying, they told me there’s nowhere in America that will bring a flooded title to salvage title, government and insurance companies won’t allow it for down the line safety issues
sort of interesting to hear the 'real' price of supercars vs the asking price. if anyone is buying used supercars at dealers you are getting hosed almost all of the time.
It’s not a supercar. It’s a limited production hypercar.
Tavarish got it for 575k. Even he admitted it was a huge gamble. I can't wait to see what he does with it.
That car is not worth 800k in its current state
I was thinking that they'd want 4-500k for it
It's Probably Going To Cost over a Million Dollars To Fix it That's Crazy 🤣
@@ChrisPBacon198 yeah it's sad but it should just become wall art at some rich dudes house
@@ChrisPBacon198 yeah might as well buy a used p1 and not have to worry about the title and other things going wrong then if you even fix it nobody is going to want to buy it unless its under 1mil
@@oxezq4362 All of Them Are Used Now but I Know What You're Saying 💯
Slightly off topic, but can we get a tour of Houston's watch collection. would be neat to see.
Tavarish say that he will fix all for 100k
The engine and transmission don't need to be replaced... just disassembled and cleaned. Matching #s is too important on a car like this.
Tavarish is probably writting the F1 expense off as a business investment. And let's not forget how many views he's going to do with this build (first video above 2M views as we speak). Even he he ends up selling it flush, he'll still make money out of that story! Glad to read he paid lower than the reserve though.
Well definitely know in the end
Great breakdown Houston!
He has never met Tavarish. 😁
The shocks are hydraulic ????? Wow ! That is really cutting edge! LOL
Tavarish will have this car back on the road..
I like that jacket Houston! Who wants to drive around in a salvage anything? Stick with the clean titles. Good info. When will we see that Bugatti?
Thank you! & hopefully soon, it’s still at the dealer. Waiting game at this point
who else is there after tavarish bought it
why would the old owner have the two cars they have and not have lifts that get them up out of potential water...
My opinion is they need to drop the reserve so we can see you do an awesome one of a kind build
Remember when a countache was $100,000? Imagine scrapping it then (2006) because it would have been $150,000 to fix the damage? Long term investment bro.
Salvage title cars don't appreciate at the same rate clean ones do and then there is inflation to factor in as well.
Tavarish just did a strategic move purchasing the P1...now he is becoming more popular and now a lot of other you tubers that wants to be part of his success on rebuilding it. At the end this will be free money for him from due to more youtube supports and he will become more popular due to this.
The prototype P1 VP4 McLaren needs to go to a good home I’ve seen it several times in person and it’s my favorite P1 it would be cool to see the owner of the VP4 and the flooded P1 live on together
this thing is going to end up like the Pelican Bugatti. Doing the rounds from insurance lot to optimistic shop and again for years to come. Too bad, it's (was) a great looking car. Ditch the hybrid, throw in a 650S or even LS repower in there and it'll be a fun driver for someone who gives no ducks.
😂😂😂 tavarish just picked that bad boy up😅😅😅 oh boy
You have to remember too that was salt water and brackish water so the wiring in that car is completely fried along with the battery and a complete electrical system I agree with you though it would be a cool off-road project dumping LS in it and make a thousand horsepower tube chassis and just beat it through the desert
Err ok
How much does it cost to get it redone at mclaren??
Did insurance not cover anything??
PLEASE do an update video on the P1, once the auction is over!
I Love the lane you're in now
I must be missing something here as I have just finished watching Tavarish re build & test drive the P1, the videos have been around for a while so I don't think spoilers are needed. I don't recall any prices, but it looked original & was definately moving under it's own steam, that guy should give him his beer back now.
Ah, I think you have been watching the 675lt build......not the P1.
I gather Tavarish never watched this ?🤔😂Or he did, rolled his eyes and then said "Hold my wrench AND my bank account‼"🤣
You can asamble every part and restore it
Freddie gonna roll up to McLaren headquarters in this baby
Some ppl have noooooo clue or act so innocent in terms of wanting to buy a flood damaged car like asif its a quick fix.
'graphics card and a rendering engine' love it :D
They had it today with no reserve as pure sale and then they switched it to minimum bid.
How prophetic, right down to the actual sell price.
Awesome video buddy. Thanks
You bet
I agree $800k is too high for this car. $100k-150k may be a lil low in my opinion as well. Id assume a $250k-300k price range would be max in my opinion.
I suspect this was will end at a top bid of 300-400. Nowhere near 800k. I have seen homes collapse on themselves because a bank or insurance company wants 30-40% above what it’s worth. (Foreclosures etc). Might even be lower with the dead title.
Like when people behind the table without any experience in working on a car estimated the value!!
Lol if you're talking about the guy in the video he's the guy who bought the flood veyron and has already rebuilt it
