  • As you may or may not know, I am a South African currently living in England. In this series, I'm home for an adventure and to reconnect with a place close to my heart.
South Africa is a large melting pot of diversity, but often tourists and explorers don't experience the country off the beaten track. I sincerely hope this series gives you a sneak preview of some of the unknown gems and other fulfilling experiences in the Rainbow Nation.
When visiting South Africa, it its ultimately the people you meet that enrich your visit - and they are the primary focus of this video. Join me as I explore one of the South African towns I grew up in - the beautiful Lambert's Bay (Afrikaans: Lambertsbaai). It is a small and relatively remote fishing town situated on the West Coast, approximately 280 kilometres north of Cape Town.
I am very lucky to meet Mercia, a local resident, on my way to town early on in the vlog. She kindly offers to show me around one of the neighbourhoods.
After a brief period of conversation and getting to know one another, she realises I am the boy who her friend's mother (Lena) was a nanny to - what a huge surprise! Mercia subsequently takes me to Lena's house and I reunite with her after all these years - a very special moment. I hope to meet up with her again for cake and coffee before my trip ends.
I also meet an artist, a diver, a fisherman, a rapper and some very dejected Manchester United fans in different parts of the neighbourhood. They all have their own interesting stories to tell and insights to share. Stories and insights that add to the charisma of this beautiful town. I also hope to meet up with some of them again, should time be on our side.
Yes, it is fair to say that Lambert's Bay has its challenges, but its people are warm, endearing and hospitable. It may be a small town, but it packs a punch in terms of character.
Note - most of the conversations and background chats are in the local language (Afrikaans) but I've translated many of the pertinent ones / added text to explain the context of the conversation :)
A special thanks to Mercia - you were a wonderful tour guide and I really appreciate all your efforts!
