good video 👍🏼 i'm pretty good at falling already but i have a hard time using my hands to break my falls i always go straight to forearms first for some reason
That's a good habit to have. You are erring on the correct side. Putting your hand our first is how you hurt or break your wrist. One of the most common skateboarding injuries. So first of all, GOOD INSTINCTS. Second of all, go find some grass or soft ground (if available). And just start practicing falling with put hand out first. Just stand, then tip yourself over and go into your fall. And practice rolling from your hand to your forearm. As you get comfortable, start falling in the worst directions and angles. Wear a helmet if you're in hard ground. Like, fall backwards on to your hip. Fall straight forward into your stomach. Fall straight down on to your side. And as you start getting good instincts, then start taking jogging starts. And then running starts. Always when falling backwards and at the worst angles, go slow and quiet and wait until you feel really solid before adding speed. And wear a helmet on hard ground. So eventually you'll be running, then turning and falling backwards. Your hands will be staying close to your body always, never left far away or reaching extended. And will simply be transferring to your forearms like you already are, just smoothing and slowing down the whole thing. Remember, the easiest way to get hurt is to put your hand out, and then get stuck on it a tiny bit too long or at the wrong angle. It's so easy! You have good instincts.
I started skating again after 25 years. Being over 40 I figured I'd wear pads. When I fell the other day I was wearing wrist guards so went to break my fall with my hands. My hands started to slide and I almost smashed my face. Luckily I sensed what was about the happen and turned my face into my should and rolled. Now I question weather pads are they way to go. Before I would instinctively fall properly and roll because I wasn't wearing pads. The think the pads made me complacent.
As an older skater getting back into skating after 26ish years, I had to relearn the importance of being able to get myself out of a trick that I know I'm not able to land, or when shit hits the fan, how to bail onto concrete. It wasn't an easy process as the problem was two-fold. My older age, coupled with living an inactive lifestyle meant that my hips were no longer limber like it was in my teens. My movements felt stiff, heavy, and slow -- all attributes not suited for skating. For the first time in my life I started to stretch (which is a form of exercise in itself), and I've been doing that for the past 2 years on a near daily basis. With the combination of consistent skating and stretching, I've regained that ability to make those quick movements to bail out of a trick, minimizing my chance of actually bailing onto concrete. I should also say I got influenced a lot by observing expert bailers, lol. I used to rely too much on my hand to brace my fall, but by watching others, I've been able to incorporate body rolling and sliding on my ass to save my wrists.
You didn't mention it maybe because its more intermediate but jumping in the air high, spinning and landing on your feet again as a bail technique. Works forward and backwards.
hey liam i want to learn bs crooked grinds but idk how to fall if i shoot over/land my wheels on the top of the ledge. any advice helps (i have no idea what would happen i only remember seeing ppl get bodied from it, seems like getting feet off the board and to the ground sounds impossible)
If you miss lock, the back foot normally catches ground first so you don't fall. If you're going fast you'll likely front roll out. Imo it's a rare fall when learning. But your reflex will W command if needed.
I have this Hole In My Hand, I Keep falling onto the palm of my hand. really annoying. I did this fakie bigspin Into this 8feet Deep Bank and I landed it really bad, slipped, Tumbled down the 8 Feet bank backwards without seeing anything using my hands to bring my body into a better position (landing on my butt) and carriying away the momentum I had at that moment. I really think I improved my falling Skills. I am still scared to Ollie our Funbox. Im always telling myself, If you gonna fall, Im accepting it because then I did something wrong and can Improve it. I really want my Ollies to be more boned and controlled. Thanks for the video

hi liam, how do you keep improving your skateboarding skills while minimizing injuries as much as possible?
I often repeat tricks until they feel natural enough before I try a new, or similar trick.
@@liam_dawson ok, a great help to me, thank you so much🙏

Good call. That's a legit observation. I respect pads, while perhaps no pads helps assist us in away like you said

@@SteveRuprecht That is true. I did miss that. Falling/bailing is so dynamic lol.

Wearing Guards for my Wrist makes it worse, because then I get the Fucking metal part right into that hole ^^
It sounds like you understand how to fall, and the more you do, you will trust yourself more.

@@liam_dawson thanks, those are the kind of falls that scare me the most. I dislocated my shoulder two times already falling like this.
