@Browntable I feel that a defining moment is the Return of the Jedi scene where the Emperor is about to kill Luke. He says to Luke that he is about to pay the price for his lack of vision. A lack of vision through the power of the force is the root cause of every failure of both sides not only the Jedi.
This is THE SCENE that got me into movies when I was 12. This made me realize that there's more to films than great visuals and action. It's about emotion. It inspired me, gave me hope and encouraged me to look what's at the horizon. Thank you for reminding those sweet memories! Ugh I'm starting to sound like a boomer...
May sound crazy but I'm not sure Lucas wrote Star Wars. After watching decades of him in interviews sometimes he has no idea what planets they're talkin about, races of creatures, etc. It's like he stumbled upon someone else's work and stole it. I believe the real story of Star Wars battle was written by someone else that died.
@@blaze556922 She killed Jabba, Went to save Han, Helped fight the empire in many battles, shot a bunch of Stormtroopers. I dunno man, she really is very ungrateful.
To me, the one scene that has always defined star wars for me in its core is from the return of the Jedi. The final battle between Vader and luke. His final line after looking to his father's cut hand and remembering that he is his son. Snapping back to the light, and delivering the best line in ALL of star wars: "I am a Jedi. Like my father before me.
It's times like this where I'm truly happy that I call myself a Star Wars Fan. Yes, the series has had its ups and downs, but much like all things, you'll always have the ups to look back on. This video, the binary sunset, just reminded me of why I loved Star Wars in the first place. I won't lie, so I'll say that this video made me extremely emotional. So thank you Star Wars for all the great memories, and thank you Browntable, for this beautiful video.
Dude that shot is a masterpiece all on its own. Its beautiful and hopeful and when Binary sunset score hits it brings me to tears. Such a beautiful peice of music. It's why I felt like *spoiler alert* Luke's death in The Last Jedi was so fitting and impactful. Him staring into the same two suns as the same song hits but instead of being a dreaming stary eyed 19 year old in the desert he's on a mountain top, where he's older and wiser and filled with a purpose.
I was actually watching A New Hope yesterday (as part of my SW binge leading up to Rise of Skywalker) thinking about the binary sunset scene and how beautiful it was and now you drop a video. It's simply one of the most elegant and simple shots in Star Wars yet it says too much about Luke's state of mind at this point and where he's going forward in his future.
This scene is so beautiful. It's the beginning and end of Luke's journey. The beginning of the franchise and where it leaves off in Revenge of the Sith. It would only be right if The Rise of Skywalker ends similarly. All wrapped up in a neat bow.
Fantastic video, man. This is absolutely one of my favourite scenes not just in Star Wars but in all of cinema, and you beautifully explained why. Great job as always.
You see this is what I really love about video essays. Every time I watch a browntable video, I never look at the movie the same again because the videos add so much depth.
This....... Is beautiful..... I cant Express fully how much this scene means to me. Luke Skywalker is my hero, This scene inspires me when im in a deep spot in life.
A new hope (the original theatrical edition) is still my favorite Star Wars movie to date. This shot is just one of many shots throughout the movie that are mind blowing
This essay brought tears to my eyes. It organizes every thought i’ve ever had about the symbolism of the binary sunset and clearly conveys the true power of the scene. You didn’t neglect the effect that the music has on it, and I just want to thank you so much for making this video!
What a wonderful idea, the movie community needs more stuff like this! Uniting us in a world we all love, and inspiring those who may not analyze films like this, to do so! Amazing.
My favourite scene in the whole franchise, no words needed. The shot and the music perfect and perfectly timed as moments later R2 goes AWOL triggering the journey.
Holy shit this is Browntable at his best I never knew you were such a Star Wars fan and I never knew your channel would ever be THIS great but boy I was wrong, thank you for this and may the force be with you!
Episode IX spoilers below The binary sunset is once again used perfectly as a closing image of this movie, clearly showing us that the future of the Galaxy is now once again unclear, but with a heroine that very deliberately embraces change as a force for good. I thought we had the last sunset at Luke's death in Last Jedi, so I was somewhat surprised by its usage at the end of the saga - but it fit perfectly as a closing statement. "Change happenes, you just have to make sure it is a good one".
They ended the rise of skywalker with a binary sunset however it was only rey's back. It could have been better if they recreated the scene with rey full of emotion with same shots and camera angles as a new hope's binary sunset. It may have delivered more nostalgia to the fans.
I fell in love with Star Wars with some clones and a musical peice, binary sunset that is. I have not watched even a single Star wars movie. This piece represents the beauty of my life!
I was 5 years old in 1977. Star Wars was the very first movie, that I ever saw in the theater. My grandfather took me to see it, before he died the next year. My grandfather looked just like Obi Wan Kenobi. I didn't understand, in my 5 year old mind, why grandpa was on the screen. The opening music of Star Wars startled me. It was so loud! And the visuals, the battle in space, and others were fantastic. But one of my favorite cinematic scenes, was Luke's binary sunset. It was hauntingly beautiful. The music of John Williams fulfilled the emotions of family, memories, nestalgia, change, loss, uncertainty, and hope.
Dang, I’m so glad you showed the connections between the Binary Sunsets in the other scenes/films 🤯 That makes each of those scenes have even more meaning and power 😯 I look forward to remembering this info, thanks! ❤️💜
I think Lucas is one of those directors who is great at creating individual pieces of a story, but they often don't all come together in a smooth way, but when it does come together and it works, it's some of the strongest stuff out there
It's going to be interesting when the Rian Johnson trilogy (reportedly, or whatever else is released) comes out to see what positive light the 3rd trilogy gets, in the same way that the prequels are now be appreciated.
Soul Index I don’t think Rian Johnson’s trilogy will be that bad. I don’t think Last Jedi was terrible, but just out of place. It felt like something that would come more naturally if it was released post Skywalker saga.
@TheDiabeticGameMaster Same for the prequels, loved them 😅 I kind of feel like the attitude we're seeing towards the new movies is what was happening during the prequel releases, but just amplified because social media is now a thing.
@TheDiabeticGameMaster there are young kids now too you know. Ones who don't care or know about opinions on twitter, my 9 year old brother loves the sequels even though I don't. I love the binary sunset, and yes credit is due to the Binary Sunset music playing at this very part, but that should actually have been analyzed instead of merely presented.
I thought this was a video essay. Where's the research?
The things John Williams did to bring together music for the scenes for the original Star Wars were amazing. The most important, after all, is the Binary Sunset's use of "the Force motif" which at the time was considered merely Obi-Wan's theme. But even before that was recontextualized as the movie became a trilogy, within just the movie itself, the fact that this motif is played here, connected with the final use of the Force at destroying the Death Star, combined with the tripling achieved by playing it here, then with Obi-Wan, then with Obi-Wan "being with Luke", all of that isn't brought up.
The Binary Sunset doesn't just punctuate the start of the movie thus far. It creates a pattern with things up the very end of the film, culminating in the final piece of music A New Hope. It starts with a march version of Binary Sunset which again creates a pattern and for the first watch, a recontextualization again of what that theme means, and what Luke means to the story.
All of that was missed because it was more important to make something short instead of something material.
