It's the opposite, Americans used to have the same chance to mature enough if they go to college, but nowadays, America players arrive in the NBA without experience at all, too young to be considered the potential leaders of their teams, by the time they start really competing two or three years later European players are already leading their teams and the stats. ¡So who's weak?

The difference between Europeans and Americans was never that big until American players stopped going to college for a full experience. At least three years. The only player who did well straight from high school was Lebron. The rest needed time for adapting.

European players generally play in the Euroleague before getting noticed and recruited into the NBA. They play against men and not teenagers like in the NCAA, in a very tough championship.
So in the end, no surprises with Gilbert Arenas. As during his career, he speaks and acts without thinking.

Euro players being talented and more prevalent is one of the reasons people use to point out how much better the talent is today compared to the past, yet now those same Euro players are dragging the league's quality down. That doesn't make any sense. Not only that, but those two ideas directly conflict with one another.

In 2023 FIBA World Cup, USA with basically all- black team played atrocious defensive and couldn't even metal. The European teams played defense and played a smart team game.

Bingo. Luka has been playing professionally since he was like 12. Lots of the Europeans have, they're much more battle tested, tougher and resilient. I can't imagine most of our AAU players trying to play against actual professional athletes. They'd need a psychiatrist after every game...😂😂😂

Look at the quotes from the players on the 2023 USA team World Cup team. They were saying the Euro rules are far more physical than the NBA rules. That they were having trouble adjusting. Luka is quoted saying no that scoring is far easier in the NBA than the EuroLeague.

To be fair, i had his PO stats in mind blocks and points just raised around 10% per minute thats not exploded. His Assist, Steals and blocks also got more in the NBA (mostly significantly), just his FT% and attemps declined.

all rule changed in the NBA that have happened that were in the idea of making it easier for the offence was all 15+ years ago. I can't even remember the last big change that happened besides hand checking being removed and that was all before European players started taking over
One thing to take into account is that the rules of basketball are enforced in Europe. An offensive player can't get away with traveling, double dribble etc. So the first European players that came to the nba couldn't play defense that effectively, not just because the game was faster than in Europe, but also because the refs did not call things they should and the europeans had a hard time adapting to this "double standards."

The thing is outside of hand checking and zoning, the rules haven't even been changed that much. They just flat out stopped calling them. Its why I like watching college and Olympic basketball more. It's also why the American NBA players look confused playing Olympic basketball even though the rules are largely the same.

As somebody who started playing basketball in Germany until I was 13, then played 4 years of high school basketball, then became a youth coach back in Germany, the idea that we emphasize team defense over 1v1 defense is just patently false. In nearly all European countries playing zone defense up until 16u or 18u is illegal, EXPLICITLY for the reason that we want to focus on players developing 1v1 skills on defense and we want to emphasize rotations. Meanwhile, kids in the US for a large part are playing zone defense in elementary and middle school because coaches care more about winning at that level than player development.

I would argue that a lack of defensive euro’s also probably comes from a dislike for euro players. Gm’s and scouts generally prefer American players, they’re more willing to take what they view as a ‘risk’ on someone who will put up 25-30 pts a night than a more defensive player.

Kudos to you for listing the older European players as well. With the few there we’re back then most of them could defend well. Also surprised (or shouldn’t be surprised) on how Domantas Sabonis was skipped over as a good European defender. When he was a rookie with OKC he already played some of the best defense in the league, and majority of it was switches on the perimeter. I used to watch the Clippers then as a CP fan, and I would hate when Sabonis was on the floor, because I knew CP was going to have a difficult time getting a shot off when Sabonis was switched onto him. Now he does his thing in the post as well
