If you were a professor, you'd be the one everyone stays up until 2am to get a headstart in registering for your class, and hoping they get in.
Also, somewhere in an alternate universe, you're dropping your next music album.

I've been debating narrating my own book vs getting a guy for the same reasons! I am so glad you made this video, it just pushed me further into the "do it myself" camp! Please make more videos about this process! As soon as I get through the release of my second book, I'm going to start recording my first.

I recorded an audio version of my fanfic book. Audiobooks are great for people who like to hear stories while doing other things, for people with vision problems, for people with dyslexia. Mine has been pretty well-received so here are some of the things I learned from the experience.
My setup is a USB audio interface into a laptop, connected to a 24" monitor. I have the PDF of the book on one side of the monitor and the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software on the other, so I can see what is being recorded. The recording area has a little bit of sound deadening (some wall hangings, carpeted floor, etc.)
I generally record chapters as separate files and finish one or more complete scene(s) in a session. Here are the lessons I have learned, so far:
    1. If it's your own book and you wrote and edited it recently don't waste time marking up - you know it!
    2. If you get it wrong you can edit it. Just stop for a second or two then do it again
    3. Use audio software that you have learned how to use (I use Reaper for music so I use it for audiobooks)
    4. Find a quiet place that you can use for all of the recording sessions of the whole audiobook
    5. Set up everything you need and leave it where it is until the audiobook is done
    6. Have a good mic in a good mic stand and use a good audio interface
    7. A pop filter in front of your mic is a good idea OR use your mic at angle so you're not blowing straight into it
    8. Actually, use your mic at an angle even if you do have a pop filter!
    9. Record yourself a lot at first so you get into voice acting and don't hate the sound of your voice
    10. Keep you recording area tidy so you don't knock or touch anything connected to the mic
    11. Measure the distance and angle of the mic from your mouth - tiny changes in position change the tone!
    12. Never make a loud enough noise that you overload the mic signal - unless the cat attacks you
    13. Don't record when you're tired (or drunk) - it will be obvious
    14. Watch out for sentences losing their energy and volume towards the end (this might only apply to me)
    15. Your facial expression can be heard in its effect on your voice, so keep it appropriate to what your reading
    16. Try to keep the tone and accent of the narrative sections consistent, as with each character's dialogue
    17. Remember it will take longer to edit the audio than to read it, as you're going to have to listen to it twice or more
    18. Keep gaps between paragraphs a consistent length (with some flex for pacey sections)
19 Keep gaps between scenes consistent - and noticeably longer than between sentences
    20. Use noise gating and compression to clean up the recordings. Use EQ to keep your voice distinct
    21. Much of the editing involves cutting the length of silent gaps. If you can automate that, you can save time
I hope some of this helps someone

The best advice I got for doing voices other than my own (such as male, old, young, etc.) was to change the /cadence/ of how I spoke rather than trying to lower or raise my voice. I listened to a friend of mine (who narrated audio books professionally) do a female voice, and though his voice was naturally deep if I closed my eyes and simply ignored the tone of his voice, I felt like I was listening to a woman. He spoke in a more breathy manner, took his time with vowel sounds, and added these little touches that were very feminine. MUCH better than when men try to speak in a high tone but otherwise change nothing - falsetto doesn't work. Additionally, if you can put your breath in different places, such as trapping into your chest (older person), pushing it to the front of your mouth and slightly into the nasal (young), or filling your chest with breath (male), it helps a lot.

Is audiobook out yet?? My Mom and I want to get back into reading and this seems like the perfect start. We need the audiobook version though because we're going to be listening while we work out. Also, your method just worked on her 😂 I told her that your character ends up blind for 100 days and then I told her why it matters to her and she was laughing and she was engaged...after two sentences. So yeah. Go Abbie!

Perhaps you already knew this story, maybe you didn't, but I thought of this nugget of gold as you reveal this aspect of your writer-journey.
    Film: Once
"A vacuum repairman (Glen Hansard) moonlights as a street musician and hopes for his big break. One day a Czech immigrant (Marketa Irglova), who earns their living selling flowers, approaches him with the news that she is also an aspiring singer-songwriter. The pair decide to collaborate, and the songs that they compose reflect the story of their blossoming love."
Glen Hansard wasn't/isn't an actor, in the true sense of the word, but rather a musician (The Frames; gorgeous Irish alt-pop band) AND the writer of EVERY song for this film concept. They completed a bag-load of auditions, but couldn't really find the right 'actor' for the musician role. The story has it that they went back to Glen, the musician, and asked him to audition for the acting role. Long story, short: NAILED IT!
It was so amazing that to watch the film, "Once", you would think your watching a documentary. You would think that Glen and Marketa TRULY fall in love and are a couple in real life; such is their on-screen connection. The song "Falling Slowly", went on to receive critical acclaim, awards etc...
Which goes to my point. Ultimately the artist most heavily involved in the creation/existence of said-art is quite often the most capable to extend it forward in another direction. For 'One Hundred Days...', this is clearly going to be you, yourself.
Well done, and thank you for causing this to exist, and furthering it's reach and appeal.
    DW.
ps. You may well love the film 'Once' also; feel free to check it out! Story-telling/Music/Humour/Irish things!
    It's a quadruple-threat!
    ^_^

Thank you! Although I wish I had this sooner, so many great tips for those of us creating an audiobook of our books.😁 I love your behind the scenes and thank you for sharing your journey! 😊
I dove into the audiobook world not long ago and started podcasting my first book of my nine book series. I recently discovered Protools because my daughter is preparing to record an album and we are her behind the scenes editing and mixing team. And I wondered if Protools would work for audiobooks. And you showed it does! And so cool because Pro tools supports multitract recording, excellent for the plans I have for the radio drama of my third book in the series.
I especially love audiobooks that are read by the author but those have been mostly nonfiction. I don't know if any fiction books I have on Audible that the author reads themselves. So yours will be the first and can't wait to listen to100 Days of Sunlight!
