In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to The Longest Day by Iron Maiden. On this Memorial Day, I'm lifting up the spirit of Memorial Day by including one of IM's classic songs about war...in this case, a depiction of D-Day. As Usual IM doesn't disappoint!

I remember when it was new people kept complaining it's not classic Maiden and now it's considered a classic by most. I like that they grow musically and try new things, it makes their new work worth listening to. If people don't like it they can listen to the old albums. I feel the same about their recent album. Some may not like it but I think a few years down the line people won't care what year this was and if it's "real Iron Maiden".

This^^ Just as the trend for bands to play their most popular albums in their entirety on tour, Maiden comes along -- without fanfare -- and plays their best to date in its entirety.
I'm somewhat tired of getting live releases these days because we get so many of the same songs over and over, but if they ever release this tour I will run to the local record store!

Nice. I don't think that Maiden's intent was to glorify war, especially not with lines like "puking, shaking fear", and "to take a bullet for those who sent them here". The song has a gritty realism, and is an homage to the dead that necessarily involves giving vivid descriptions of the horrors that they endured. There are also definitive anti-war songs on the A Matter Of Life And Death album.
The A Matter Of Life And Death album is one of my favorite Maiden albums. It's very cohesive from beginning to end, and contains absolutely zero filler. It's criminally underrated.

Sadly, Iron Maiden's last truly wonderful album was 1988's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Sure, they've had moments of brilliance on most of their post-Seventh Son albums, but over all they lack the memorable melodies and tight production that Martin Birch had given them. Also, Bruce's vocals aren't nearly as good as they once were. Finally, the songs are overly long and, well, flat out boring. (This is also known as the "Progressive Rock Almost Always Sucks" rule.)

    • @brianthomas5260
      @brianthomas5260 2 роки тому +1

@@mournblade1066 I thought the same thing about Seventh Son being their last great album. I hated their next two albums and I never even listened to the two without Bruce. And never heard another song until about five years ago I heard those kids do some covers of songs I never heard. This being one of them. And it got me to listen to the whole album of “A Matter of Life and Death” I loved it. Then I heard their cover of “Ghost if a Navigator” from you Brave New World” and was amazed. So if you’ve never given BNW a listen to, you should. I think it’s better than 7th Son.

Brave New World is probably the best post-Seventh Son album (well, Fear of the Dark probably is), but even then it pails compared to their earlier stuff. The production of Brave New World onward is awful--they're all recorded live in the studio, instead of individually multitracked.

The only thing I found interesting is the double-kick action and I didn't think Nicko McBrain was into much of that, which is unfortunate. It is one of their best, it was great to hear them revisit For The Greater Good Of God on the Legacy tour, would love it if they played more songs from that album more often.
I know they’re getting older and with Bruce revealing he had to have hip replacement surgery recently, but I would love for them to do a “Audience With...” style show, where it’s just them, no support acts, and they just play a 3 hour set with intervals, they have such a vast back catalogue now that it’s the best way to fit as many fan favourites in as possible without sacrificing too much, and with plenty of variety to pace the show without blowing out...
Dream Theater did this “Audience With...” style of show recently on their Distant Memories tour, instead of a support act they played an hour set in support of their new album Distance Through Time, and then after an interval they played Metropolis pt2 in it’s entirety.

Greetings from Germany, Doug - I'd like to throw the song The Nomad from Iron Maiden into the ring - it is wonderful just how they put oriental music flair into this one. I instantly was sent back emotionally to the university days where I had the luck to belong to a expedition party making a Trans-Sahara drive with Bedouins (The Nomads!) and Jeeps to later find out that this route has been cancelled from the Paris-Dakar Rallye due to its difficulty grade. The song brought me back to this travel, to the people of the sand, the wind, the motion, the desert. Iron Maiden understands it artistically and beautifully to pay tribute to them - especially noteworthy is the magnific and awesome instrument part in the middle of the song. You might try it out - it is something more unusual for Maiden - at least in my layman ears. And again congratulations for your vlog - I really enjoy it - especially the part that you came to like Iron Maiden at last - I couldn't be wrong to turn to to Bruce once upon a time - i.e for over 33 years (being 49yo)- Cheers and stay safe, Chris

I want to thank you for reacting to this song... though not for the reason you may think.
I literally did not know that 'A Matter of Life And Death' was a unique album. I had been under the false assumption that it was a compilation of songs from other albums so had never purchased it when filling in my Iron Maiden collection.
This has now been remedied thanks to seeing this song reaction and realizing that it was a song I had never heard.
    Thank you again ;)

It’s taken me a very long time, but Nomad is starting to grow on me, kind of like how the more I listen to Blaze Era songs the more they grow on me. It’s a song I used to skip over a lot whenever I listened to Brave New World.

Yes! Glad we are back to Maiden Mondays! Understand there is a version of this song edited with the start of the movie Saving Private Ryan, very dramatic and matching The Longest Day tune. Respect for your military even though I am not from the US. Can´t wait to see To tame a land reaction, another superb song. Keep going Doug!

You must do more stuff of their greatest masterpiece - Somewhere in Time, e.g. The loneliness of the long distance runner, stranger in a strange land, sea of madness. Or from 7th Son , Infinite dreams or The evil that men do.

Adrian’s album... his writing and playing on that album is elite level, his solos on there are some of his absolute best (Wasted Years, Stranger and Alexander particularly).
I flip-flop between Somewhere In Time and Powerslave for my number 1 Maiden album.

Great album, i listen a lot to Maiden in my teens and early 20ies but after i got married i never could play this music home so it just did glide away but after my divorce in 2012 i did start to listen to my old favorites that was "forbidden" home and this album was the first that got me back on track with Maiden and it is one of their better, now IM are among my favorite bands again, thanks for picking this song, would love to hear Nomad from the Brave new World album, maybe im lucky on one of these mondays😃, great video and reaction as always
