In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm once again making it a #maidenmonday by returning to music by Iron Maiden. It's a grand occasion, as we're celebrating Bruce Dickinson's 65th birthday! The Wicker Man was the first song workshopped and released by the band after reuniting with Bruce and Adrian. It's a classic IM track! Up the Irons!

You really should do an untypical Maiden song soon, my suggestion would be “Prodigal Son” from the Killers album. I’ve never heard a Maiden song like that, quite unique in their catalog. Thumbs up if someone agrees.
also strange world
Totally agree. Honestly, a lot of Maiden's music is pretty monotonous, but both Strange World and Prodigal Son are brilliant, creative tunes.
With their first lead singer they were closer to punk then metal imo
@@davidebasile9422 I've been trying to get him to do Strange World for a year. Maybe he's allergic to it.
I always suggest Powerslave, that is a rich song to be analysed. tempo changes, tune, key etc..
When my daughter was only about a year old I caught her singing the Whoa O O O part while headbanging in her car seat while we were driving. I was totally shocked. This CD came out shortly before she was born and was probably the only CD I had in the car for years. She became pretty brainwashed by it :D She eventually would request songs off of it, such as "snowman" (The Nomad :D )
I was about 1 week old when I first heard Maiden. My dad rocked all Maiden albums on our car's cd-player all the time. Brave New World came out the year before I was born so it was probably one of the first ones I heard. So many great memories :D
You should really do some Bruce's solo stuff soonish. Something like Book of Tel, Jerusalem, or Darkside of Aquarius. All of them quite epic, and all of them in the key of E-not.
He recently toured with a small orchestra doing covers of Deep Purple and they did a couple of his solo songs. They still sound so good. They did Tears of the Dragon and Jerusalem. Absolutely worth checking out. ua-cam.com/video/Dk1ggxkeUcs/v-deo.html Also his rendition of Perfect Strangers is just... chef's kiss.
I second this!
Tears of a dragon should be the first. Just beautiful
Better than maiden
Yes definitely agree. Anything off Accident of birth would be awesome
Steve Harris' tone is always so punchy and forward in the mix. I love his playing.
Thankfully with Steve as a founder and primary writer of Iron Maiden songs, bass is prominent in Maiden songs.
It's what I love about bands like Maiden and Rush. Very audible and punchy bass.
When I started playing bass at 16, I was absolutely obsessed with Steve Harris and his playing. Just a little over a year after I started playing, I had already bought all of his signature gear, his bass with the pickups and strings, his Tech 21 Sansamp, all of it.
@@haydenarlington8256 That is really cool. We all get one signature of our heroes I think. I almost got a Geddy Lee J-Bass. Instead, I got three Marcus Miller signature basses. One Fender and two Sire
The most anticipated return. The Kings of Metal met again in 2000 and thus achieved the greatest power and creativity!
Hi Doug, love your reactions. With Oppenheimer now being a movie hit, I would suggest to you to listen to Iron Maiden's Brighter than a thousand suns. It's literally about the invention of the nuclear bomb. It's inspired by the book of the same title. The song is quite interesting musically as well, using odd meters, interesting riffs etc. Another great example of them blending serious topics of history with great music. It's definitely one of my favourites.
This song is great. I suggested it a few Weekend ago. I LOVE this song. Hope Doug would React to it.
Great song! Would have been a more interesting choice.
Any song off A Matter of Life and Death will suffice! It's one of the best metal albums ever.
This is such a great album! The Nomad is one that I think you would really enjoy.
NOOOMAAAADDD!!! Great tune! Can't wait for Doug to do that one!
Yeah, Life's Shadow by Beckett is a great song with a great tune, you're right about that. (For anyone who doesn't know, Maiden plagiarised Life's Shadow twice, first taking the lyrics for Hallowed Be Thy Name, later on taking the tune for Nomad.)
Nicko impresses me in this tune. He plays single kick peddle but sounds like double bass. I'm sure that was challenging live.
Yea love the dudes playing and charisma , it's just Nicko not Neeko , if you have ever heard the story of his nickname 😊
He only tried to use a double bass pedal once, broke it and said fuck it haha
Great performance by Bruce, Adrian and Nicko on this song.
I’ve been to the Future Past Tour in Amsterdam last July. Great show and lots of energy they have. Special respect for Nicko McBrain after his stroke in January to recover for this journey.
I love when you react to Iron Maiden! MaidenMonday is always welcome!
Please do a reaction of basically anything from the Chemical Wedding, which was the album Bruce and Adrian did just before rejoining Maiden. I think Jerusalem would be an especially fun one for you, as you may already be familiar with the traditional arrangement/melody of the Blake poem, but that whole album is gold.
For the next one, maybe try "When The Wild Wind Blows" from The Final Frontier, IM's studio album from 2010, one of the single best epics from Maidens extensive catalog, an absolutely beautiful song in my opinion. (Then maybe you can try Montsegur, from their 2003 album Dance Of Death, their heaviest song)
Absolutely agree
Great suggestion. Great song.
I would love to see you react to some Bruce Dickinson stuff from solo career like: Jerusalem, Navigate the Seas of the Sun, Chemical Wedding or actually any other song.
Hard to believe this was 23 years ago. Adrian smashing on that E blasted light back into the dark times of him being out of the band during the 90s. Made this old guy happy.
I clearly remember reading about the reunion, Bruce and Adrian returning to the band, while Janick keeping his role. I went nuts! Absolutely crazy and excited, because I just knew it was a game-changer for them, and also for metal music around those years.
Then this song comes out as a single, marking the return for Iron Maiden as we know it… boom! bought my ticket and went to see them at Earl’s Court in London for that tour. Amazing performance! Being in the crowd for that chorus is just an unforgettable experience.
Was at the Earls Court show in 2000 too, my first ever Maiden show and it was truly immense! Still love the Brave New World album 🤘🤘
@@chrishampton1981 It was my first as well! They also had Slayer in the bill. What a night!
@@sebastianschilling7337 A truly awesome night indeed! Have seen Maiden eight times overall since that show and also had the honour of meeting Steve Harris in 2014 which was truly awesome as he inspired me to pick up the bass guitar
Brave New World came out on my birthday. May 29th, 2000. Best birthday present ever.....
I was so hyped when I heard Bruce came back & Adrian is the reason I picked up a guitar as a teenager. The Earl's Court show with Slayer was one of the best Maiden shows I've ever been to & I've been to a lot
Thanks, Doug. Up the Irons!
Maiden rarely misses with their music. Been a fan since Powerslave back around 1985. So many good memories and so much good music.
Love the t-shirt Doug.
mmmmmm Haken bacon.
Another good reason to listen to Maiden? Nicko just revealed he recovered from a stroke at the beginning of the year but has been drumming on their tour this summer. Up the irons!
Maiden is Maiden. I remember like it was yesterday of the release of this album and I was present at Rock In Rio 2001 watching the guys take this sound live one of the first times. It was impressive and certainly historic. This song is mindblowing, i may say.
A pity time doesn't come back... :)
Up the Irons!
Nicko`s kick drum impresses me. Singel pedal and sounds like double.
Also worth noting when it comes to Nicko is that what sounds like double bass pedals during the chorus is done with a single pedal. The only time he ever tried out double bass pedals was on the next album, with the first minute or so of "Face in the Sand."
I absolutely love Bruces solo stuff, each album gets better in my opinion
it is said yannick gurrs. bruce introduces him, on the dvd dive dive live. he plays guitar and his usual energetic self.
great song, from my favorite album... Bruce came back to Iron Maiden.. nice songs.. great :)
I love this album!!!!! Brave New world is still my favorite album and the title track is such a great song. The ghost of the navigator is another great song!
It was cool the “oh ohh ohh” live. I was at RIR 2001, not only cool but it was mayhem also. 200k people and it was insane, but also great. Up the Irons!!!
I don’t know if you have reviewed The Darkest Hour by Maiden but it’s an instant classic in my mind. Great melody and the solo is amazing, and the lyrics are fantastic.
That whole second disc is fire! Bruce's vocals are just amazing.
As good as it was to see Bruce back in Iron Maiden, the albums he made with Roy Z are much more interesting and musically adventurous. Anything from Accident of Birth or The Chemical Wedding is worth listening to
Thanks Doug! Maiden Mondays are always welcome!
Love the Iron Maiden support. Two quick things…
~ the returning guitarist’s name is Adrian Smith, not Aidan.
~ the album title is ‘Brave New World’ not Brand New World.
Love the analysis and your respect for metal 🤘🏻
As a devotee of the old Burning Man, I Instantly appreciated this ancient Pagan ritual. As a huge fan of Iron Maiden, this song was perfect.
You should have listened to this song from the live album En Vivo
Great song. Little known fact. There is a US RADIO EDIT! The same song just with an additional line in the chorus. GO CHECK IT OUT!!
thanks for this doug! you should check the nomad from the same album :)
Boost for NOOOMAAAD! :)
Rock in Rio version is the one. The Wicker Man is a very strange but pretty good movie.
this one deserve a live reaction, specially rock in rio 2001!!!!
What a great reaction and what a great song. I'm a victim of the algorithm unfortunately and haven't seen your videos for a while. Great to see another Maiden Monday!
Is a concert song: yes it is.
I was an Iron Maiden fan for about a year before this came out, I was still in grade school. I was so excited that Maiden was getting back together. BNW is such an awesome album and return to form. Would love to see Ghost of the Navigator, Dream of Mirrors and Out of the Silent Planet reviewed. 😊
"Brand New World" 😂 Awesome faux pas there- I imagined a whole album done in the musical style of the "Holy Smoke" video
You should do a reaction to the Rock in Rio Live version. It’s another level of awesome
Ugh! CHILLS! Been a fan of Maiden from the beginning, and this by far, has been my favorite opener they have ever done! Arthurs Farewell was the intro, and then it rolls into this to lead off the concert. Saw them in Cleveland, and when they played the "Your time will come" parts, they put the lights on the crowd as if to say, "You wanted a reunion, you got it! Now enjoy"! It just blew me away! The best way to see this one is to watch the Rock in Rio 3 version. Crowd was insane!
Nickos super tight 16ths on single pedal.. what a beast..
Get well Nicko
please do The nomad and Ghost of the navigator !
This is a fairly straight forward song. They always make these kind of songs singles from the upcoming albums.
But, it has been 2 years since you did my Blood Brothers request. I thini its due time you do The Nomad next 😂 I think you are gonna enjoy that one, especially the mid break 😊
The live version from "Nights of the Dead, Legacy of the Beast: Live from Mexico City" is the ultimate live version of this song.
Single kick pedal on this one, like most everything Nicko plays. Fastest right foot in rock
I gave up listening to Maiden after Bruce left the band. I was so excited when this album came out. Great stuff...The Wickerman actually got a little local radio airplay.
For me the best version of The Wicker Man is the latest live version, Adrian's solo is beautiful as never
Hi Sir! Thank you so much for having Iron Maiden special. Can you please review another Iron Maiden song from the same album Brave New World. The title of the song is NOMAD. I know after you hear that song it will be your number 1 IRON MAIDEN song....please please please see, hear and and be fascinated by its riffs only IRON MAIDEN can do. I hope you will grant my request. Love and respect for you Sir from the Philippines. God bless you! Up the irons..c",)
I will die on this hill but I think you will LOVE Iron Maiden's "The Legacy"!
Watch the Live Version of Wickerman in Rock in Rio
Nice to see you react to the studio version
Happy Birthday Bruce!!!
Hi Doug!
I'm Luis from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and I am quite surprised (maybe disapointed at some extend) since you seem to have missed one of the most iconic Iron Maiden's songs EVER. This particular song is from their 1985 album Powerslave and it's called Losfer Words (Big Orra)! It is an bot long instrumental song which I believe you gonna love. I would be very happy if you manage to do a Reaction video on that one!
TY very much for being there!
And I'm waiting to see your reaction and hear your comments on Losfer Words!!!
CHEERS!!!
One of my favourite songs.
I saw this tour in Toronto. The special effects set the set on fire. All of the crew were running around with fire extinguishers. The band kept playing and Bruce said we were in no danger. FIre out, the band kept going.
For a song off their debut how about "Remember Tomorrow"?
: Listen to the group's studio version of the song Iron Maiden - Hallowed be thy name .
I remember when you were just starting out and you did Maiden every week, go times. Congrats on all your success 👍
Please do Septicflesh for a MetalMonday ! They are amazing mixing Death Metal with Orchestra and Choir. Prototype, Sangreal or Prometheus (my favourite) are some to give a try ;)
This is one of my favorite MAIDEN SONGS..
Such an awesome song, the fans are always screaming for this one at the shows.
You my friend need to go over "When the Wild Wind Blows" off the 2015 Remaster of Final Frontier, it will blow you away...
Waka-waka
Doug, check out the rare US promo version of this song. Slightly different with a call-and-response chorus. 🤘
Flight of icarus will always be my fave maiden song, because it was the first I ever heard
My favorite Maiden song as well.
Yeah, probably my favorite, too. Can't remember the first Maiden song I ever heard, though--I think it might have been "Running Free," or something from the Paul Di'Anno years.
It’s not my favourite, but it was also my first. I was instantly hooked on the band.
@@6li8storm40 My brother played it for me off the Live after death cd because he knew I loved the story and I was hooked. Then he said sit back and enjoy and left. I heard churchill and aces high, my teenage mind was fried for life lol. Best live album ever inho
I cannot believe you haven't reacted to The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner yet!
It is one of Maiden's most epic songs!
Up The Irons!!
It feels like a new song... But it's 24 years old.. 😮
The title track is really worth looking into!
I love the way the video shows ...the movie background..THE WICKERMAN WITH CHARLTON HESTON
one of my favourites on the album. Maiden is always the best
LOL Sudden thought: Do Judas Priest "Breaking the Law" THE CORGI VERSION!!!!
You wouldn't have to say a word because of the cuteness overload.
"Even if Maiden did unplugged, they'd say 'Hey, we're not going to unplug the explosion machine!'".
I definitely recommend Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. One of the best, most epic examples of Maiden's ability to tell a story instrumentally and lyrically. Plus, I wanna say that it is not in E-minor. Try it Doug!
This was the radio single for the album they used as a promotion for it
Album name is Brave New World not Brand New World!
This is a great song live!
Innocent Exile - from their KILLERS album is a great deep cut. Love your channel sir
Based on the 1973 film with Christopher Lee. There's an alternate version of this song with the counterpoint, "Thy Will be done." The movie is about Christianity vs. Paganism. The warning is a Christian threat against the hedonistic ways of the island of druids.
You should try listening to the band Epica. A song like Sensorium or Consign to Oblivion would be an interesting listen for Metal Monday!
Probably my favourite song!! \m/...UP THE IRONS \m/!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What an absolute banger. Maiden at their finest.
That man is an Iron Maiden fan, no doubt
👏👏👏🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘😲clasic Maiden song !!!!... 😆yessss !!!
It’s crazy to think this was almost a quarter of a century ago now. The highly anticipated return of Bruce and Adrian, whose songwriting was sorely missed during the 90s. Whenever Bruce and Adrian write together, it’s magic, and when they contribute as a singular it’s usually memorable too. Adrian has credits on most of my favourite Maiden songs. You’ve done “Wasted Years”, which is penned solely by Adrian, I don’t believe you’ve done “Stranger In A Strange Land”, from the same 1986 album “Somewhere In Time”, also penned by Adrian. It has one of the best guitar solos ever, it was like Adrian had locked himself inside the wardrobe to Narnia, and when he came back he brought with him something otherworldly.
I’m surprised you didn’t go for some Bruce solo work for his birthday, particularly “Born In ‘58” (which he was), his solo work is fantastic, almost all of it is a different sound to Maiden (there’s two or three that sound like they could’ve been Maiden songs, “Road To Hell” the most notable for me). Interestingly, for the 2 Bruce albums prior to returning to Maiden (“Accident Of Birth” and “Chemical Wedding”), Adrian had joined him. It was almost as if it were written in the stars. They join up again, and then a few years later they both rejoin Iron Maiden together.
Always love the Maiden Mondays, hopefully you do the Book of Souls soon tho 😁
This song is a statement of intent, for an early 2000s reunion, like ‘Judas Rising’ by Judas Priest
FLIGHT OF ICARUS!!! Come on, man! UP THE IRONS!!! That's Maiden's best song, hands down! It's Bruce at his absolute best!
Watch Rock in Rio 2000 or 2001 on the Brave New World Tour they open with it and it's amazing
I remember when VH1 put 'The Wickerman' on air in 2000... Iron Maiden fans like me who had experienced Bruce Dickinson's leaving the band in 1993, were anticipating this record like oxygen after suffocating - we saw and heard what we thought we wouldn't experience again; a new Iron Maiden album w/ Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith.
No disrespect to Blaze Bayley, the vocalist who replaced Dickinson in 1995... good vocalist, but didn't fit Maiden's evolving sound. They needed that wide range and songwriting that Steve Harris was aiming for... They also needed a producer and Kevin Shirley was the right guy since their producer Martin Birch had retired in 1992... Steve Harris as a lone producer was just not getting the job done; too much repetition... not enough editing and sonically not where they needed to be on 'The X Factor' and 'Virtual XI' - 2 albums w/ Bayley on vocals. The 1998 single 'The Angel & the Gambler' was just a mess...
Since 2000, Iron Maiden's records have become more prog-oriented... longer songs w/ extended instrumental pieces... It might have worked w/ a singer capable of a high vocal range, but Bruce Dickinson was the voice that Maiden needed... Paul Di'Anno would not work vocally w/ these new epic songs like - 'Paschendale' ... 'For the greater good of God' ... 'If eternity should fail'... 'Isle of Avalon'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘
I'm sure you already know of all of Brice Dickinsons list of achievements in life like being a commercial airline pilot, an author, a champion fencer, and defeating throat cancer. He's quite an accomplished fellow.
THE NOMAD
doug big greetings from latam! yo should do lost in a lost world OR transylvannia+strange world. those are rlly good songs for u and your content! big fan brother! keep it up
It is also Sydney Croby's birthday. 08/07/1987
The final chorus is a nice throwback to Heaven Can Wait
one of the best track of "new" Iron Maiden, Adrian is great composer.
Yes maiden!!
Love your videos. I'm a huge Maiden fan live how you break down the songs. You need to check out Death of the Celts.
hey Doug if you want to be surprised and truly enjoy non Em maiden songs, you should check songs like the ghost of the navigator, powerslave, dream of mirrors, the lonelyness of the long distance runner, the many key changes in Aces high, revelations, flight of icarus, flash of the blade, be quick or be dead, lord of the flies, when two worlds collide, the talisman, and many many other more, there you have it, there's so much room where to choose instead of the conventional hit singles or songs that are mostly in heavy metal's favorite's key mode of Em. Great Channel nonetheless, i always enjoy your reactions and deep analisis of the songs.
