There are rumblings that there may be a full concept album in the future, or Harris's British Lion might do one.
@@Bad_Wolf_Media It is a Concept album inspired by the novel 'Seventh Son' by Orson Card. The idea to base the album around the folklore concept of the seventh son of a seventh son came to bassist Steve Harris after he read Orson Scott Card's Seventh Son.[3] Harris stated, "It was our seventh studio album and I didn't have a title for it or any ideas at all. Then I read the story of the seventh son, this mystical figure that was supposed to have all these paranormal gifts, like second sight and what have you, and it was more, at first, that it was just a good title for the seventh album, you know? But then I rang Bruce and started talking about it and the idea just grew. I know Dickinson himself said later that its more of a 'half Concept Album. According to Harris, the band "spent more time checking up on each other to see what everybody else was up to, just to make sure the story fitted properly and went somewhere". To make sure each song fit with the record's concept, the band drew up a basic outline for the story, which Harris states "didn't make the actual writing any easier ... I probably took longer over the writing I've done on this album than any I've done before. But the stuff we all started coming up with, once we'd agreed that we were definitely going for a fully fledged 'concept' album, really startled me. It was so much better than anything we'd done in ages". So Harris himself considers it a concept album and each song does 'follow' on - even if its not a 'concept' album like Operation: Mindcrime for example.

man i never expected you listening to this song, for me The Prophecy and Judas Be My Guide are the hidden gems of Maiden´s discography. Its a shame Maiden never played both of this songs live. The acoustic final section is pure magic. Thanks for the video.
I particularly enjoy how the many key changes within the song (which I often dislike) work so flawlessly in this case. Somehow, everything seems to work perfectly.
this is easily one of maidens most classical sounding songs while also carrying that same maiden energy we know them for with the heavy metal sound and dave’s absolutely masterful solos
Guitar players love E minor, but one of the most famous Iron Maiden songs is not on that key, "The Number of The Beast". I believe it's on D major, kinda unusual for metal.
@@jimmyggs91 ... Steve Harris plays bass, and a lot of these "E minor songs" are composed by him (I am a bassplayer myself). Guitar players also love A minor ("2 minutes to midnight", anyone?)!
Very underrated song with medieval vibe and amazing acoustic guitar outro. Dm/Em/Am at verse. Next POWERSLAVE from Powerslave (1984) album. Written by Bruce. Amazing guitar and bass solos at the same time, and not Em xD.
I love that you appreciate Maiden! They never got a lot of airplay in the US, but the fans they have are absolutely rabid. Guess that's why they're still selling out 100k+ arenas. Screw the radio! Up the Irons!
Thanks Doug! One of my top Maiden favorites! Glad you liked it. One of the few Maiden songs that fade out at the end. They have never played this live.. The entire 7th Son album is great
I was never a Maiden fan then someone bought me the seventh son album when I was at college . Incredible album . A must to listen to the complete album Doug
My friends and I are all in our 50's, we grew up listening on early Iron Maiden as it was played by our older brothers and neighbors, inherited all the albums, bought Somewhere in Time, and then this album came out. This is maiden at their peak... in writing, playing, style, vocals.
Bruce is a phenomenal singer, but my favorite Maiden album is Powerslave. I got into Maiden with Piece of Mind, but their musicality really exploded with Powerslave. As defining as Number of the Beast was, even Bruce has said it was Number of the Beast and Powerslave that put them on another level.
Still... Hard to fight these words. But when checking out Book of Souls, after like.. 30+ years? And STILL being able to amaze? THAT'S what makes Maiden so amazing to me.
In 1988, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son was the first CD I’d ever bought. Still have it today and it’s still one of my favourite albums of all time. It needs to be listened to from start to finish to get the full picture. Maiden were at the top of their game on this album.
I listened to the analysis of "the Prophecy" and "the seventh son of a seventh son" and they were fantastic, but I believe that this album should be heard as a whole to have the complete feeling of the work, as it is a single story , like a movie or book and each song works as a chapter of that work. If I may two suggestions for a song: Ozzy Osbourne's Revelations (Mother Earth).
7th son tells a story ,a narrative so to speak. My favorite maiden album to listen to start to finish, not necessarily the best maiden album but the story it tells is spectacular
Still remember when this album came out when I was 16, listening to it on my walkman on my way home from school. I was already a metalhead and a Maiden fan but this was the first time they were played on mainstream media that I was aware of. Maiden was at the time, and has remained my favourite band. It's cool seeing people react to Maiden for the first time, I've seen dozens of different people react to them, hip-hoppers, novices, classical musicians, vocal coaches and now composers. It is great to see these songs from my youth being analysed in this way and see people come to the same conclusion I had come to when I first discovered heavy metal as a young teen; Iron Maiden are awesome.
This album was my fave for many years but I listened to it soo much it now takes a back seat. They're my favourite act. I'm enjoying following you on your journey through their back catalogue. Keep up the good work.
It’s worth to listen to this album from a to z since it’s a concept album inspired by the novel Seventh Son by Orson Scott Card. I love the artwork on this album. Derek Riggs best work.
I hadn't circled back to Seventh Son in awhile, really great album, thanks for the new discovery and reaction for you and re-discovery for me Doug! To echo below, The Clairvoyant, oh my, that opening Harris bass riff... soooo great and it only gets better from there.
In my opinion The Prophecy is a relative short song because it is the transition to the one of the biggest song of the record, Clairvoyant then followed by last song Only The Good Die Young. This is my favorite Iron Maiden record and it will be awesome if you can react to Moonchild which is the opening track!
Im absolutely gobsmacked to stumble on this. This song is rarely mentioned by anyone and is one of my favourites. I could always imagine violins playing the riff when it kicks in just before the singing starts. Great video, great song choice. Thank you, your reactions and song breakdown made my day. Magic.
The music on this album was the first music which ever really moved me, especially Infinite Dreams and the Prophecy. It came from such an unexpected direction as I'd always been led to expect heavy metal to be mindless!

of Maiden´s discography. Its a shame Maiden never played both of this songs live. The acoustic final section is pure magic. Thanks for the video.
I particularly enjoy how the many key changes within the song (which I often dislike) work so flawlessly in this case. Somehow, everything seems to work perfectly.
I love when you do iron maiden. More iron maiden mondays please.
this is easily one of maidens most classical sounding songs while also carrying that same maiden energy we know them for with the heavy metal sound and dave’s absolutely masterful solos
Bruce is epic on this track
Bruce is epic on every track...
Bruce is epic.
Epic is Bruce
The Voice of Bruce in This song is amazing. It show us why Bruce is considered one of the best vocals of heavy metal.
Lol!
Doug: maiden only writes in one key.
The prophecy: hold my key...
#spittake
Guitar players love E minor, but one of the most famous Iron Maiden songs is not on that key, "The Number of The Beast". I believe it's on D major, kinda unusual for metal.
@@jimmyggs91 yes , d myxolydian
@@emiliosetta3557 which uses the E minor scale 😜
@@jimmyggs91 ... Steve Harris plays bass, and a lot of these "E minor songs" are composed by him (I am a bassplayer myself). Guitar players also love A minor ("2 minutes to midnight", anyone?)!
This song is an absolute masterpiece... And so is the album 🤘
Very underrated song with medieval vibe and amazing acoustic guitar outro. Dm/Em/Am at verse.
Next POWERSLAVE from Powerslave (1984) album. Written by Bruce. Amazing guitar and bass solos at the same time, and not Em xD.
Yes, Doug should do several tracks from Powerslave, including the title track, Aces High and Flash of the Blade
Actually Seventh Son is a concept album, all the songs are conected somehow... it is totally Worth a full listen
The entire 7th Son album is great
Nice, calm song between the madness of 7th son and the Clairvoyant.. i love the full 7th son album. Greetings from Chile
I was never a Maiden fan then someone bought me the seventh son album when I was at college .
Incredible album . A must to listen to the complete album Doug
You should realy do the entire album on video. We love your reactions. DO IT!!!!!!!
"Infinite Dreams," "The Evil That Men Do," "The Clairvoyant", "Can I Play With Madness" so many cool songs from a single album.
That album has the best sound I've heard in my entire life
I listened to the analysis of "the Prophecy" and "the seventh son of a seventh son" and they were fantastic, but I believe that this album should be heard as a whole to have the complete feeling of the work, as it is a single story , like a movie or book and each song works as a chapter of that work. If I may two suggestions for a song: Ozzy Osbourne's Revelations (Mother Earth).
7th son tells a story ,a narrative so to speak. My favorite maiden album to listen to start to finish, not necessarily the best maiden album but the story it tells is spectacular
Infinite Dreams!! The best song of the album and one of the best songs in the whole IM catalog.
This is one of my favorite and most unrecognized Maiden tunes, thanks for having a listen.
We need to send Doug a Maiden shirt to wear on Maiden Mondays :)
With some Trooper Beer.
Love Maiden Mondays!! My life is better now :D
Probably their best album. Although Piece of Mind has a special place in my heart as well
This album was my fave for many years but I listened to it soo much it now takes a back seat. They're my favourite act. I'm enjoying following you on your journey through their back catalogue. Keep up the good work.
Dave doesn't write many tunes but when he does they're top notch
All songs connect to each other, Doug! It's a concept album, every song telling a part of the story. It really is a masterpiece.
Doug is slowly becoming a Maiden fan!
Now we must turn him into a Blind Guardian fan too 😉
Oh Hell yeah
haha to much double bassdrums :P
He is not ready for Hobbit Metal. Not yet.
He needs ro to And than there was a silence... Actually whole Opera album.... He will be blown away
He should start with The Bards song, A Past and Future Secret and Lord of the Rings etc before jumping onto the faster stuff.
🤞🏻
It's 4 years to the day since I saw Iron Maiden Live. Listening to them never fails to impress!
It’s worth to listen to this album from a to z since it’s a concept album inspired by the novel Seventh Son by Orson Scott Card. I love the artwork on this album. Derek Riggs best work.
Iron Maiden was my first concert in 1988 seventh son tour, I have been a fan ever since. This is great watching your reactions @DougHelvering 🤘
Starblind and Powerslave, you won’t be disappointed
Yeah. Both are great.
I think it was Metal Hammer who called Starblind a "forgettable filler track" when they reviewed the album...
Starblind is a hugely underrated maiden track.
@@stuartrose9866 What a bad take! To me it's one of their best songs period.
The final Frontier is a underrated Album, Isle of Avalon & When the winds blows wild again are great songs too.
It came from such an unexpected direction as I'd always been led to expect heavy metal to be mindless!
bro i love all your maiden reviews... i was surprised to see this on your channel! i absolutely love this song and this is my favorite all time maiden album... please please PLEASE keep making maiden reviews!!
please do the clairvoiant next!!
The lyrics are the whole album speaking to you
"Why won't you listen to me, is it so hard to understand?"
😉
I love this entire album and have listened to the songs over and over. In fact I say it’s their best album...I like it all but Seventh Son captures the band perfectly. Loved your take on it too! Now I’ll be looking forward for Iron Maiden Mondays with Doug!
Always glad to see a Maiden Monday pop up.
This is probably my favorite video of yours so far (for Maiden). Watching you be blown away at their change up was fun!
Seventh Son and 2112...You gotta listen to the whole thing start to finish to "get it"!
Agreed.
Both classic... you might want to toss a Operation Mind crime in there to make a complete madness of control.
Thanks so much for doing these, from a hardcore Maiden fan. The way you name off the different keys and how they work is like rocket science to me so this is really fun.
Talking to Seventh Son of a Seventh Son : absolutely listen to Moonchild !
for sure... i think he should review all album fron the beginning to end
I'm so glad you "doug" that Doug. it's very cool watching you discover new music genres considering your music knowledge. It's fun being on this journey with you. Thank you for chronicling it.
Love it when Doug does his proper analysis on the songs. Keep it up! Personally, I'd go for a Rainbow song now..
That outro... Is one of the most beautiful passages of any Iron Maiden song. Almost like the middle of Master of Puppets. It’s just amazing. Always loved that.
Yeah this album is so good. The best Maiden record in my opinion. And it should be listened to as a whole, from start to finish!
Best outro of any Iron Maiden song, period. Loved your reaction to all the key changes, "It shouldn't work, but it does" lol.
Hey Doug - The Legacy is another non-E minor track from Maiden and it’s very intricate with loads going on. Would love to hear your assessment next Monday if you’re open to it!
To be honest, I find it very hard to pick a favorite Maiden song, especially from the 80's. I always say that "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is my personal favorite, but every damn song gives me the chills. Anyway, I would like to give you a short list of songs you must definitely react to. Well, here it goes:
1. Iron Maiden - Where eagles dare
2. Iron Maiden - Caught somewhere in time
3. Iron Maiden - Sign of the cross
4. Iron Maiden - Infinite dreams
5. Genesis - Firth of fifth
6. Genesis - Supper's ready
7. Genesis - In the cage
8. Genesis - Cinema show
9. Uriah heep - Paradise\the Spell
10. Uriah heep - Salisbury
11. Uriah heep - Circle of Hands
12. Uriah heep - The Magician's birthday
13. Jethro Tull - Thick as a brick
14. Jethro Tull - Bouree
15. Jethro Tull - Locomotive breath
16. Jethro Tull - My God
17. Rainbow - Stargazer
18. Rainbow - Gates of Babylon
19. Ken Hensley - The Last Dance
OK ! I kept it short
Nice job Doug, I really like your reaction videos. Stay true !
Fotis from Greece
Thank you for taking these lyrics and music seriously. It might be mostly E, D and C but for Maiden fans there is true meaning in both the melodies and the vocals.
7th son is a very cohesive album
I love living vicariously through your discovery and analysis of Maiden's music, and also how you nevertheless don't shy away from providing some critique. I got into this band long ago, and love seeing the fresh enthusiasm!!
