- Here's a cool Jazz/Funk/Fusion tune I recorded for Spanish guitarist Javier Salinas. I always film all the sessions I'm doing and couldn't decide which take I like more so I sent Javier both. I love your “old school” approach to recording, where you do a full take and avoid lots of chopping, changing and moving parts around on a computer screen. It’s much more organic and alive this way.

yeah with shit load of shoots here and there you can't even fucking follow what the fuck is going on when there are thousands of frames, I actually unsubscribed from many drummers channels just because of that, it's just impossible for me to enjoy those videos
@@RandySeverino Lots of modern recording encompasses of separate takes within one song. Not a lot of drummers/musicians do everything in one take anymore.
This is how real musicians record. Why do these people think that the right way is old school and the easy way is “right” nobody shows up to the studio ready to record. Garbage for the dude that spent there whole life getting it right, perfecting, and polishing. All these kids be like “what do you mean a click? Can’t you just fix it for me? ....I’ll practice to the recording before the show..” Fake musicians. 🤮
if you are skilled enough to do so, its an opportunity. but there are some music styles where this feeling-thing is not needed that much and its all about tightness and perfection, so you work out, what most of the drummers can't do live. and the production will benefit.
so its not a different approach to recording in general, but more a difference in the choice of what of musical way you wanna go.

I can see your mind at work, TL. I can't imagine what you'll sound like after a few more takes. Some tricky transitions (in there) that create lot's of room for experimentation. Very inspiring!
Lovely snare drum sound and off course the bass guitar too.
Take 2 is a touch more interesting for my money.

THAT INTRO (3:30) is More Interesting in Take 2 than ANYTHING in take 1 (esp the Take 1 intro)!

Thomas, do you do all post editing (video and sound) for these UA-cam videos you upload? Like this video for example. Did you mix the sound to your liking? Or, was someone else behind all of that magic? Haha. Either way, it sounds incredible. That ride ping and trashy cymbal mix is a hard wave to touch on.

Both takes were amazing, but take 2 seemed to flow a bit more organically. You seemed to be feeling it more in take 2. Fantastic drumming and fantastic guitar work. I think the album will do really well. Peace out.

that's some really tasty playing. We all know the guy is a chops monster but it takes a level of musical maturity to play for the song.

We are TOLD total lies like "you can either play for the song or overplay". NOPE. Jazz drummers can play like maniacs and STILL SERVE THE SONG, but Rock drummers are mostly meatheads. We were LIED to about this. (The result is endless meh albums out there.)
SIMILARLY, have you ever heard teh "conventional wisdom" (aka LIE) that there's ART MUSIC and then there's COMMERCIAL music? (Yeah, that's why Pink Floyd outsold 99% of the most "COMMERCIAL" acts ever?)
THE DUMBEST GIRLS ALIVE are singing BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY at Karaoke! (Do you know how AVANT / EXPERIMENTAL that song is??)

Awesome! Upon first listen - which is invariably unfair to both takes - seconds one felt better. But that may be because I could follow better after the first listen. I'll have to relisten to both I guess :) super fluid yet massive drumming 🤘
Take 2 BUT! Play it at 0.75x playback speed 😏 clear winner. Also shows how preciseTL is lining up with the lead.
It is interesting that my 10-month son likes to see your videos. Hope he will be a drummer. Awesome performance.

I see your playing a 4x14" snare drum.
What kind? (ie; bronze, maple, etc.)
id give this dude a good 7.5/10 for this effort. He could grow his hair a little and take pride in the fact that most of the best drummers have long hair i.e peter criss, robert sweet, Tommy Lee and Paul stanley to name a few. You might even play more better. Have a listen to I was made for loving you and you will hear the big drum solo dadadadadadadadada played by the catman Peter 'Anton' criss this is pure drumming awesomeness and you sir would catapult yourself from a Dream theatre reject to a makeup wearing girly guy. I didnt think much of D/Theatre so dont get too discouraged. Those bitches take themselves wayyy too seriousness dude

The best Thomas Lang playing I've ever seen, such a power player really locks this down so much control and groove. I like the way he digs the stick on to the snare just after the beat. This is it! Hideous music though...

Just heard the final song, and Javier seems to have liked your very dry sound as it was. Great playing by all musicians on the whole EP, and who ever mixed / mastered it certainly also knows what he or she is doing. You can hear everything that goes on in all the instruments. Love it.
