I was excited to try to connect my lg 27 inch ultrafine 5k monitor to my iPhone 15 Pro but it doesn’t support thunderbolt. This is exactly why I was saying that they should’ve made thunderbolt connectivity as an option or release an ultra series to match the ultra watch this year. USB-C still has its limitations. I assume possibly this could be fixed with a software update, but knowing Apple not likely. It is interesting to see several UA-cam reviewers market the external display as a new feature, yet apple’s own displays, do not support this feature.
That is very disappointing to hear. However, LG 27 ultrafine 5k owners aren’t missing out on much. Because of software limitations, there are minimal productive use cases for connecting an iphone to a monitor.
Good video. All we're waiting for is Apple to support the external display setup. If they ever support it, we can only speculate. But the idea of making an iPhone your only computer is very exciting; I'm sure the processing power of the A17 Pro is good enough for a desktop experience.
The A17 is on par with the M1. In an ideal world, it would be my only computer. With extensive USBC capabilities, I wonder what apple's plans are for it. Generelly, techy hardware upgrades like neural engine, nfc, U1 chips either : -Strenghten the advantage of ios native apps. -Reinforces the eco system. -Encourages you go buy a new apple accessory. The usb type c capabilites of the 15 Pro are extensive. Blue sky thinking here. I wonder if the 15 Pro could power a £1,500 Vision light night year that doesn't have an M2 chip. The vision pro would only tethered to an ipgone 15 pro with a magsafe battery.
So what might happen if they did that is people will have their phones plugged in more and the controversies over battery wear will probably only increase, but we are looking at the future Mac Mini there. It's a baby Mac. It has the spirit of Apple's Macintosh and does even more in some ways and less in other ways that have to do with UI size limitations. Maybe we should enjoy iPhone for what it is without forcing it to be something else for now. There's genius in iPhone... absolutely. One day iPhone may be the only computer though once they come up with a dock for one of their displays or something that they can motivate people to buy alongside their iPhones. :)
@@brandnaqua I agree about battery wear. My 15P gets noticeably warm from charging unless I charge it on my magsafe stand that has cooling. Tethering a vision pro to an iPhone which is in your pocket on a warm day would be detrimental to the battery. Fair enough. Let th iPhone be an iPhone. However apple should bring MacOS desktop apps to the ipad. I would love to use the ipad as a tablet and feature complete computer.
Thats a big oof. My 4 year old Galaxy Note 10+ can be connected to a monitor and using Samsung Dex, transform into a full desktops experience with resizable windows, full mouse and keyboard compatability etc. It's better than not only the iPhone's monitor support, but also the iPad's by a mile, and that thing is advertised as a mini computer basically. Nice video though. Usually Apple is always years late to implementing a new feature. However, I don't ever see them implenting a similar feature to Samsung Dex just because they want their computers to sell 😂. They did a very good job with the iPhone 15 lineup this year. I may upgrade seeing how it compares to the Galaxy S24 Ultra. If I do switch to an iPhone, I will just miss some of the basic features that Apple is missing such as one hand usability, actual notification centre, individual volume controls and being able to place apps anywhere on the screen to name a few.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I wish that I had no "upgraded" from a 2017 ipad pro to an M1 ipad pro. Although the hardware is superior, the OS is a MAJOR bottle neck ther prevents you from exploiting the hardware. Like driving 911 GT3 on country lanes. My last Samsung was an S6 Eege in gold. Stunning phone. If I want to try Dex, which phone would you recommend thats not too expensive?
@@HonestHans365my last Samsung was the S22 ultra. I believe the base model S series of the galaxy line all have this capability. There’s really nothing like it on the market from anywhere else but Samsung.
@@HonestHans365 100% agreed on the iPad. Unfortunately the hardware is nowhere near being used to its full potential. It has gotten better over the past few years but still has a long way to go if it wants to achieve that "portable computer" goal. As for Dex, I'd recommend anything from a Galaxy S10 onwards. I believe you could pick up a used one for £150 or more. It is a flagship phone feature so you'll need to get the S10/Note 10/S20/Note 20/S21/S22/S23 (prices obviously going lower the older you go)
Exactly the type of video I was looking for! Really hope apple will support stage manager and FULL screen external display support without letterboxing (I thought M1 iPads didn't have letterbox!?) Anyways, as of now it seems unfair to have such a strong processor in the phone but no ability to use it as a computer. Samsung is way ahead here with their dex.
You are welcome! Unfortunately M1 iPads have letterboxing on external monitors but that’s because apps for the tablet have not been designed to scale to 16:10 or 16:9.
Yeah, me myself I got an iPad Pro 2020 (not M1) and there are some app that scale to full screen on the external monitor so that is really an indication that it would be possible if just apple wanted us to@@HonestHans365
You can choose the speakers on iPhone or iPad. Just go into Control Center and tap on the like AirDrop looking button above the playback controls and there you have a list of all connected speakers and you can choose which one to use exactly like the Mac.
Cheers! I actually own an Oppo A54s that was used as a temporary phone for my GF early this year. It has a USB type C port. I’m now tempted to find out whether there is a DEX alternative for non Samsung phones.
@@HonestHans365 At the moment I'm still using my laptops. It would be perfect to use something always being with me, like the Iphone. Maybe in some time I'm using an IPad for this... I'm not sure about that...

This must change. Apple are advertising the video-out feature for professional use during shooting or recording. This will remain misleading advertising until they enable some apps on iPhones to output 1080p, 1440p or 4k over HDMI. When connected to a monitor, the ideal would be for Safari, UA-cam, Chrome and a few other apps to use the same aspect ratio as the iPad.
That is correct. The monitor doesn’t have an AUX port. Monitor and battery powered speaker are connected over Bluetooth with a red cable used for power. For wired speakers, you could hook up USB speakers or use a USB-to-3.5mm adapter.
DEX is wireless with the right monitor and it is possible to use it in place of a desktop (I own a business and do it every day). Apple will never allow this.
You are not wrong but there is hope! This year Apple will allow side-loading in Europe and there is pressure from regulators for apple to make all APIs accessible to 3rd party developers. Fingers crossed this will open the pathways to a DEX capabilities.
The option to disable charger could be nice. However, if using an iPhone for power intensive tasks, you are more likely than not going to want to charge it - especially if you want to continue using it afterwards. When I record continuously for 90min the battery gets drained from full to zero. Then it gets drained further whilst uploading 50-90GB of content via iCloud.
You can connect a 12 Pro to a TV using the lightening adapter which has HMDI and USB out. Stick with the official adapter as some third party ones don't work with Apple devices or do so unreliably.
It should. However the base 15 only supports USB2 speeds and not USB3. As a result there could be future differences in what the base and pros as capable of as “computers”.
