Glux and all of the Azuls are great! I enjoy playing Qwirkle with the family, too.
So glad to see Glux on here! SO underated I wish it would come back in print
I was surprised not to see here Hanabi. And Mandala Stones is another one I like. Nice list!
Indigo is pretty great. I wish more games were like it in the way you are in cahoots with different players in different areas/ways.
Between two cities
Azul Summer Pavilion. Love the changing wild tiles.
Dude!! I was just wondering about good multiplayer abstract games! Thanks for shedding light on the topic!
Tom didn't mention it but look at a game called Winter Queen. Plays 1-4 players all player counts are legitimately fun
My favorite themeless game (some call it abstract) is The Game of 49. So much fun.
My Favorite is Fibe Tribes, but if that’s not abstract enough its Azul Stained Glass of Sintra closely followed by Sagrada
I love Tash Kalar! It is perhaps my favorite abstract. A close second is Bullet♥️!
Azul its my favorite, especially :Summer Pavilion
really fun light gameplay
I love Shipwreck Arcana which you played yesterday. Great for multiplayer.
I recently discovered K3, a newly published game, and it is fantastic in a minimalistic style. Simple, yet some meaningful decisions to make.
Photosynthesis is great and mean. It looks so beautiful, but you get into each others face from the start. But my favorite for sure is Taluva, such a nice looking game with so much depth.
Never heard of Pueblo. Wow, looks like something I would love.
My number 1 is *Mahjong!* There are many different rulesets but I would recommend *Zung Jung* rules especially for board gamers.
If you like Through the Desert, Babylonia is absolutely worth checking out! The only downside compared to TtD is that it doesn't accommodate 5 players, but it's a superior and equally fun territory control abstract. Oh, and it doesn't have the camels. Tie, then!
This is a fantastic video, something I've been curious about. Project L is amazing. I've enjoyed Mandala Stones. If Azul counts, I wonder if Reef would? I love Reef.
Great list
Reiner Knizia has a lock on this gaming category and you forgot about KELTIS. Another good multiplayer abstract is Hexago Continuo.
Through the Desert is out of print!!! Ahhh!!!
If we are going for the lightly themed, one under appreciated stand out for me is Caterbury(2013). gorgeous board.
I gotta give it to Project L. It’s beautiful, quick, crunchy, engaging, and immensely satisfying. It’s also a great gateway game as well. The ghost piece and finesse expansions are also excellent; they expand the strategy and decision space in the game. My only real gripe is that there is no real meaningful player interaction. But still; brilliant brilliant game.
Through the Desert is fantastic. It’s a close second for me. Superbly interactive. Easy-to-teach. Deceptively deep. It deserves a reprint. It’s never leaving my collection.
Had 'Project L' only been more consistantly available!
Great list, on mine would have been War Chest.
Spirits of the forest.
This is my favourite abstract game for multiple players, scales well. It is cutthroat with 2 but much more peaceful and relaxing with 3 and 4. You just focus on collecting your spirits and do well without worrying what others are grabbing.
The game also has fantastic components.
Many thanks for this video! My favorite abstract game of the shown games is SAGANI! 🥰
Have you ever played Noctiluca by ZMan Games?
For me it's Torres and Tigris and Euphrates
War Chest and Blokus are in my choices.
Eko is another treat of a game!
He took my topic idea. 😎😊
Surprised that Reef didn’t make the list.
I also greatly enjoy Coatl and Sagrada
My favorite is Bullet
Kind of expected War Chest to be on the list, but I assume you mostly consider that to be a 2 player game.
I would add Taluva here.
Surprisingly few that I’ve heard of. I like Azul 1 and 3 and know I would like Project L. I think Through the Desert sounds the best here but may try Reef based on comments.
Battle Sheep is one of my favorite Multiplayer abstracts. I really love all the picks on this list though. I only played GLUX 2 player and thought it was “ok”. Pueblo is gonna be high on my list to play next time I get to a convention as it’s one nobody in my gaming group owns. Blokus+/Rumis+ also would have made my list.
Qwirkle, Azul, Reef, and Samurai all came to my mind
Would you put abstract card games in a separate category? Things like Arboretum, hanabi, the crew or sushi go have zero real theme but they're not considered abstract games. Maybe themeless card games can be a top 10 for another time
Yes, I would.
Chakra is my favourite one at the moment.
Yea some love for Santorini New York! I like both but agree Santorini is a 2 player and NY is more.
Blokus, sir. Also Azul Summer Pavilion is definitely the best Azul.
My top games are Azul (original) and Reef. But there are other two I feel deserve to be mentioned: Sentient and Kamisado.
Tom has gone full quaker on this one!
Sagrada is my favorite. I like Azul too but I prefer Sagrada.
Is Torres an abstract or strategy game to be able to make this list?
Santorini: New York.
One of those painful game names.
Renature is my favourite
Sagrada for sure!
Eko and Feudal (1960s 3M game)
I need to try Santorini.
Shobu, Mouseguard: Swords and Strongholds, Hive and Onitama
battle sheep !
I was surprised photosynthesis didn't make the list.
Where would you rank Mythic Mischief on this list?
Element is really good
Mine is Photosynthesis. Similar to what you said about Bosk, I know it is supposed to have a theme about growing trees, but it really is just an abstract that is all about out positioning your opponents in my opinion.
I really like War Chest with 4 players.
Really love Sagani. It's similar to Nova Luna, but it's significantly better.
OG Azul for me.
Abstract defined as without theme:
1) Blokus. The most mathematically elegant of all.
2) Ingenious. The best take on dominoes in modern board gaming.
3) Quoridor. Tiny bit of theme?...
4) Dozens of traditional and modern card games (Bridge, 1000, Spades, Linko! etc.)
5) Multiple word and concept games (Codenames, Upwords, Just One, etc. Please don't tell me that Codenames has any more theme than Chess...)
6) Hey! That's My Fish! Tiny bit of theme there, but definitely not essential to the game.
7) Traditional combinatorial abstract games adapted for team play (Yonin Shogi, Rengo, several 4-player Chess variants etc. These classic 2p games are so good that even crudely adapting them for play in teams of 2 can result in an outstanding gaming experience.)
I quite like Zendo, but it may not fulfill the strategy criterion. Maybe Dimension?
I'm not a huge fan of abstract games, but I've always got time for Nova Luna.
Quoridor, Gemblo, Blokus, and Blokus Trigon
I still love Hive
And Quirkle!
While not obvious just by the name “abstract”, apart from having no theme, I consider an Abstract game (with capital A) must have some sort of spatial puzzle too, either movement or placement/removal. Otherwise, just as an example, we would consider most card games Abstract games.
Where did mandala stones land?
Go sure finds it's way to all kind of videos on this channel.
Reef is my fave abstract game and I like it more than Azul.
I was going to name a couple but now I’m unsure if they’re abstract or not.
Same, I really like Photosynthesis, which is thematically similar to Bosk (they're both very different from a gameplay perspective though). However, while it has the mechanics of an abstract, the theme is so well implemented I'm not sure if I would count it.
I really thought Photosynthesis was going to be there, one of the fiercest multiplayer abstract games I've ever played. Guess Bosk kicked it off the list!
I actually think Photosynthesis has a fairly strong theme.
Nmbr9 and dragon castle for me
No Photosynthesis?
Was sure 'War Chest' would be on your list
Qin is great
Zendo!
I don’t know if it’s just me but I would have thought that vindication would have been his number 1.
I don't think Tom would consider Vindication an abstract game per se, although he has said on several occasions it's a very abstract feeling game.
I was putting together a list, but it kept growing because most games are to some extent abstracted and then I started putting various card games into the mix and ended up giving up. The definition of "abstract" is too loose for my brain to put a list together.
6 nimmt by far
The common definition of "abstract game" is so unhelpful. You could argue chess has more theme than Dominion. We're almost always referring to open information spatial mechanisms.
What about _Keltis_ ?
Calico
Pueblo is $100 on eBay. Not that cheap.
I'd rather play Rumis / Block 3D. I find it funnier.
FIve Tribes didnt make the cut :(
I think Five Tribes and Samurai (Knizia) should/could be on this list. Great recommendations, though.
Qwirkle
How is tigris and euphrates not on the list let alone number 1. Others that came to mind were sagrada, dragon castle, reef, quarkle, and quatrex
Because T&E isn't an abstract game.
Have you played it? It may not classified as such on BGG, but it absolutely is.
Tom: Pueblo blah blah blah
Me: Oh that sounds so interesting (googles to see where she can buy it)
Tom: BUT ITS OUT OF PRINT
Me: NOoooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Actually Santorini the original game can be played with 4 players, and each two players make up a team sitting across each other, everybody use one god power, it's really struggling, much hard than it's played with two players.
Team Santorini is my favorite way to play. Coordinating with your teammate makes it more interesting, and since you share workers but don't have the same power, you can have to think differently about your turn.
No War Chest? :(
I consider War Chest to be a two player abstract. Yes, you can play it with more, but it's best at 2.
@@thedicetower Ah, fair enough! I quite like the 4p mode but I can appreciate it being seen as a primarily 2p experience
@@thedicetower I got surprised in how good war chest is with 4 players. You should try, if not already.
Photosynthesis.
For me, I would have to say War Chest and Dragon Castle. War Chest is probably best 1 v 1, but 2v 2 is also interesting!
Sagrada...photosynthesis.
Pulsar 2849
Forget Qwirkle???!
i thought santorini new york was awful compared to the original santorini. was not elegant at all
Too many good ones not on the list. I wouldn’t buy half of those. Renature is fantastic. Not even in the top ten🙃
