Star Wars was originally made for kids, but in a way so that adults could also enjoy it. It's evolved now. Some of it js geared towards kids, some to teens, some to adults. It's meant for everyone.

It would be smarter to say that Star Wars grows with the kids. A lot of adult fans were introduced to Star Wars as a kid, and when they grew older, they found more to love and appreciate from the franchise. Saying that Star Wars is for kids is not only stupid but it completely completely leaves out the kids who grew up.

Also Andor was specifically marketed as a star wars show geared for mature viewers. Same with Boba Fett 💀💀.

The irony of this point of view is that I started watching Star Wars as a kid. Grew up on the OT even though my Dad was an avid trekkie. The key is the impact the franchise made on me as a kid left an indelible mark on what I enjoy in entertainment. So now I'm an adult who is invested in the galaxy far far away.
I do think, as is the mentality of the age the films were made, the target audience was kids because scifi wasn't an adult genre at all. That doesnt mean adults couldnt enjoy it and obviously they did. But the real growth was the kids like myself who grew up on it. Then my generation didnt like the prequels cause they were made "for kids" and now there are adults who advocate for them as the best in the whole series.
There are adult concepts and dialogue rife within most star wars content which speaks of a very adult disconnect from what kids like or understand but that doesn't change the intent.
I guess what I'm trying to say is it's more nuanced than black and white. It is, fundamentally, intended as media for children. A heroes journey, good vs evil, a tale to inspire and evoke imagination. But those characters, exploits and stories inspire us into our adult lives and we carry them with us. The galaxy grows with the audience as it were. Rogue One, Andor, some episodes of Clone Wars, Mandalorian, etc all have adult overtones because the kids have grown up and I think, to Lucasfilm's and Disney's credit, a lot of those shows and films were made with those adults in mind.
A long answer. But hopefully a welcome one ;)

I would take issue with the idea that sci-fi wasn't an adult genre. The people interviewed in the archival footage were very much into science fiction.
The main point I'm making is that while Lucas' intention was to make kids content, that doesn't necessarily mean he hit the mark.
I'm glad you mentioned the prequals because those don't just have adult overtones. I mean, look at Anakin at the end of Revenge of the Sith. That is not kid appropriate content.
Also, while I can only speak for myself, Lucas' issues with the prequals had a lot to do with writing and directing. While they aren't listed on IMDB, Lucas had help making the New Hope script palatable for audiences. He also didn't solely write and direct the two follow-up movies.
Lucas is creative, but as I said in the short, he's a bit tone deaf when it comes to his target audience.

@@greatwhiteapereviews It's not that sci-fi wasn't targeted at adults, it was just widely considered to be - like Fantasy - a genre geared towards youth. That isn't to say that some movies in the genre weren't absolutely for adults I just remember as a kid my grandparents saying how star trek and all that space stuff is fun for kids but they wanted to watch the news, lol. Might be different elsewhere, but I think thats a reason so many Sci-Fi shows never lasted in the 90's, because the genre wasn't taken as seriously and wasn't as successful as others.
The prequels have adult overtones in the sense of political machinations, senatorial debates, and all that dry stuff that bogs down the action of the films. I know my 6 year old doesn't love the part with all the talking, she wants the lightsabers and the silly stuff lol. Whether those adult overtones took center stage for the audience is another question, but I definitely think Lucas couldn't achieve his vision of a true kids movie because of that. War and Politics, Trade Blockades and that sort of stuff is not kid content.
Anyway, I agree - Lucas is far from an excellent writer of dialogue and his wife/partners were paramount in making the OT palatable and even then there are plenty of campy moments. That's why when people get hard nosed on the writing and direction I have a little chuckle because it's never been super serious or deeply profound for the most part. With plot holes and cheesy lines abounding.
Lucas' issue is that he isn't really making the movies for the audience. A New Hope was a passion project he obviously never expected to succeed to the magnitude it did, and when it did he wasn't prepared to alter his vision or pander to the fans that were everywhere. He was telling his story and that's how it was going to be. It's actually a respectable outlook because the second you start altering your vision to appease the mob is the second you lose your direction entirely. There is too much division and everyone has their own personal view of what they want the content to be, where it should go, how it should be portrayed. That's why all the vitriol over Disney being garbage and Lucas being deified doesn't make sense to me because Lucas has had plenty of clapback in his career from fans too. Grass is always greener on the other side I guess.
Boy can you get me talkin Ape.

This "for kids" defense can involve cognitive biases like the "sunk cost fallacy" (where they justify their investment in the media) and "ingroup bias" (where they defend something that aligns with their identity or interests).
Ultimately, it’s a way to protect their enjoyment or investment in the content from external criticism.

Just because something is made for kids does not mean it has to bad. Kids shows are usally more thought out than big Blockbuster Movies, just look the MCU for example or the Sequel Trilogie. The problem is not the audience and it never was.

meanwhile star wars: murder, mass genocide, literal war, bounty hunters who do hunt and kill their targets, body parts getting cut off, if you also count the medium rare Anakin special, children getting slaughtered, siblings making out the list just goes on so as far as I'm concerned star wars isn't for children it never will be people need to stop making everything child friendly it's a problem that needs to be fixed asap

Blame Disney, they know know how to make stuff for children, so any product they get for adults they make it more and more kid like.
Like how Jurassic world with the mansion was just became a kids movie, like having Chris prat half tranquilized flopping around away from lava.
That looked so thing right out of despicable me and it nearly made me walk out of the theater.
Starwars rebels is quite literally designed for kids, rather then being for late teens like the clone wars series, they went into slap stick comedy.
Disney just cares about selling rather then caring about the fan base or even caring about said product.
