I genuinely like Attack of the Clones, and I've never understood the hate for this movie. Is it perfect? No, but there's much to appreciate from this brilliantly crafted story. I think the manipulation of Palpatine was brilliantly told throughout the prequel trilogy, and setting up Anakin from an optimistic child to a lost cause adult shows what great vision George Lucas had as a writer.
I fully agree. People sometimes pay to much attention to the bad dialogue, but beyond that the overall story is really good. The downfall of a whole democracy is perfectly pictured and you couldn't show it better in a movie. The older I grow the more I understand and value it. I think the really only big flaw are the dialogues. They might highlight other flaws but I think the rest would be ewsier to overlook because movies are never perfect and will never be flawless
@@SilverViper1000 There was never any hate for the movie back in the day. EII was actually the best received episode from the Prequels. EI sucked balls. EIII got off the hook only because it has very solid first act (up until "Another happy landing" - and then it goes downhill pretty quick), and of course, because "Spielberg cried" when he saw the movie and simply couldn't live without sharing the fact. YES, some of the dialogue is really clunky and YES the movie is not perfect. But it was a COLOSSAL improvement upon EI, it has really neat structure and great ending.
One thing about AOTC, I can still turn off my brain and enjoy it at the worst parts. Unfortunately I cannot dumb my brain down enough for TLJ and TROS. I might never come back.
I love Attack of the Clones. It's the first time we see Obi-Wan in charge, and his growth from being the student in Phantom Menace. Anakin starts out kinda whiny, but everything from his arrival on Tatooine to the end of the movie is gold.
Attack of the Clones is great! People need to understand that George Lucas is not a Hollywood filmmaker, he's an Experimental filmmaker. He wrote Attack of the Clones in the style of a 1930's Soap Opera Drama, with sprinkles of a Detective Noir story, which is ultimately what it is. If you look at the Prequels as a Tragic Family Soap Opera, you'll begin to understand the sensibilities behind Lucas's writing style.
I probably watched AoTc more than any of them tbh . I had it on dvd before 3 came out and I wore it out as a kid , especially having battlefront 1 and all the action figures from the movies . It was a good time for Star Wars kids . And to this day I still love second one .
I've always preferred Revenge of the Sith because the climax really is a trilogy-defining sequence, but I have always appreciated Attack of the Clones. The dialog is sometimes overly wooden, but otherwise, I think it walks the tightrope between being a romance and developing the state of the galaxy quite well. Tbh, teenagers are as cringe-inducing as they come, so Anakin being whiny and overly sappy is pretty on point for his age.
Even as a prequels fan, I have to disagree. A lot of problems that people have with the prequels in general are really just problems with this movie. The whole movie hinges on the romance, and it is dry as a desert. The actors and script never once convince me that these two characters actually have feelings for each other. Unfortunately, this is to Episode III's detriment, since Anakin's love for Padme is so central to his fall. Anakin is a creep. They spent so long depicting him as an angsty, creepy teenager who was well on his way to becoming Darth Vader, it's like they forgot that Anakin's story is meant to be a fallen HERO. Episode III scrambles to show us Anakin's heroic side in the first act so that we can actually feel for him when he falls. That was Episode II's job. I could go on. Lackluster special effects, mysteries that aren't properly explained, the worst duels of the prequels, senselessly drawn-out action scenes, tell-don't-show characterization. But it's really those first two points that cause the biggest problems, because they make Episode III's job harder.
Because he was given proper development. I think TPM should've done what AOTC did(just age Anakin a little bit first) then have him be more hero-like in AOTC and then have ROTS showcase his downfall. I know that George wanted him to be a pure boy in TPM but it didn't work .
@@orbaitv5991 Personally, I think it worked. The prequels in a flawed way, still shows us the journey of a boy going from a slave to youngling to Padawan to Jedi Knight (in the micro series) to Sith Lord.
My mother is a strange case, she saw the originals as they were coming out, but she didn't saw the prequels until years later, but when she saw them, she loved them, even a bit more than the originals, at first she couldn't believe these weren't the first movies cause the effects in the originals were less modern (she didn't understood the concept of prequel yet, until I explained), we recently went to a Star Wars movie cycle, when I told her we were going to see AOTC, she got superexcited cause that is her favorite, and then ROTS.
My problem with this movie is that Christopher lee’s count dooku only got like 11 minutes of screen time. George casted the late great sir Christopher Lee (at the time he wasn’t knighted), one of the greatest, if not the greatest actor of all time, and really the greatest person of all time, and he gave him 11 minutes.
@@brucewayne1662 we needed to know more about him, like in that deleted scene where obi wan and Jo casta nu discuss dooku in the Jedi archives. There was a bronze bust of him so we know what he looks like, we would’ve learned that him and qui gon shared the same ideals as far as defying the council (before we learn that dooku was qui gon’s master). There was deleted dialogue where Jo casta nu went into why dooku left the order, saying that he thought that politics were corrupt and the Jedi betrayed themselves by serving the politicians. Then there was a later deleted scene where dooku talks to padme, where he says that the republic is beyond fixing. We still wouldn’t know a whole lot about him, but with this information I explained would’ve let us know why dooku is doing what he is doing.
I've had a theory for a while that a lot of people's perspectives on the Prequels were influenced a lot by their preconceived notions of how things "went down" before the Original Trilogy. For example, my Dad and Brother believed that Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader was more _gradual._ Not in the "dark side" mind you, but physically. They believed that over the course of a few years, his body gradually had to be replaced with machines, until he was more machine than man; they believed his respirator was the result of a starfighter crash that nearly destroyed his lungs. And it was the slow loss of his "humanity" that drove him to the dark side. In fact, they had believed he was already "more machine than man" by the time Luke and Leia were conceived. I didn't have any beliefs or theories going into these movies. Where most people were looking for validations for their beliefs, I instead went-in looking for _answers._ And I got them and was most satisfied by them. Personally to me, the plot with Padme and Anakin is secondary, where my focus is on Obi-Wan's investigation of Jango Fett that leads him to the discovery of Kamino and the Clone Army waiting for them there. The final shot of the Clone Army in the movie set to the Imperial March says it all. _"This is how it happened."_ To me, this made sense as to how the Empire could have a seemingly infinite number of disposable Storm Troopers to do their evil bidding - because this movie implied that they were literally _bred to be soldiers;_ mindless drones who follow orders and nothing else. And I stand by that, regardless of how recent changes to the canon make the claim that the clones were phased-out and replaced with recruits or conscriptees - to me that makes less sense. Because when you have an army of slaves bred for war that you can order by the millions, then you don't have to _pay them._ And when you're a tyrannical dictatorship that controls the means of production, _you don't have to pay for their creation._ Needless to say, I've always felt this movie was underrated.
This! i too had a lot of thought on how it all went down when we only had the original 3 movies. As much as i loved the prequels i seen them quite young too, i can only imagine how older people felt when they came out eventually, after living with their own imaginations for years previously
@@lordsidious83 THIS. Absolutely the reason why all the 70s kids shit on the prequels. They didnt see what they thought they were going to see. The thing is though, i believe a lot of what they wanted to see is actually covered by the clone wars series. But good luck getting them to give THAT a chance
to some extent i could make the same argument about the sequels, i for one was waiting all three movies for them to reveal that Ben and Ray were actually brother and sister, and that han and leia were the parents she remembered, and that they had abandoned her in case the dark side took over their family again there would be another hope for balance in the force HOWEVER, i do believe there is solid objective arguments for why the sequels are bad. From the fact the writing had no sense of continuity with a different director trying to make a different saga every movie. To the fact its the only star wars movie that has any kind of narration, because its creators lacked the ability to show and not tell, to the relentless woke narrative constantly being shoved down your throat from every corner of the story
This happens with most franchises, unfortunately. Once you get past the first few (usually three) installments, fans start getting their own ideas of what *should* happen.
Attack on clone definitely underrated it shows Anakin wasn’t ready for romance at all people like to harps on Anakin being whiny but it just shows he’s a teenager and like us we whine a lot it’s happens. I understand why the Jedi don’t allow emotional attachment it get in the way of there priorities but caring for his mother wasn’t wrong. When he’s lost his mom that hit hard for me I would probably done the same thing take out the tusken but it takes great strength to not seek revenge taking the remains of shmi bring her home to her family is way more important. Me personally it was never about loving someone, getting married and having kids it all about if you lose them the way you act to it is what defines your character that matters because love is no place for the dark side it just ruin relationships. In the end of the day I just feel sorry for Anakin.
@@realaidenthomas I truly believe Anakin can be the Jedi that he is dream of being because if Luke can be a Jedi like his father than his father can be a Jedi like him. To be honest the Jedi and Obi Wan do care for Anakin a true friend and family would both care and criticize him it call tough love not like Palpatine who tells Anakin what he wants to hear not what he needed.
@@realaidenthomas The lesson I learned in revenge of Sith always keep your humanity and your freedom never sacrifice it to a Tyrant/Devil ever and yes not even for your love ones. It best for Anakin to have courage spend every moment he has with Padme till her time had come let her go out in her own terms because controlling the way she dies is the same taking her right to live and ignore the words of the Sith. Also the attack of the clone deleted scenes are cool.
The problem is that the Ankin in TPM comes across as more mature than the one in AOTC. I think Lucas wanted to make Like 2.0 and didn't understand that it did not work.
My biggest issue with Attack of the Clones is how underdeveloped the Separatist movement is. We are told that there are a group of systems lead by former Jedi Count Dooku that wish to leave the Republic, but we aren't really shown why they want to and how they are being manipulated by Palpatine. In The Phantom Menace, we see his manipulation of both sides much more clearly and fully developed. I know Attack of the Clones is half Noir mystery movie, and the nature of mystery is not revealing everything, but with such a large time jump between Phantom and Attack, you would think there would be more context given to the state of the senate and outlying systems. I know this gets explored a little bit in The Clone Wars and even in The Bad Batch, but it is a shame that the Separatists were given such little screen time in comparison to the other factions in the Star Wars saga.
Political side of the Star Wars Universe is what completely slipped away from the sight of Disney executives. The sequels totally rekt our dear Leiah (sorry I don't remember how to spell her name in English) and all what she was fighting for her whole life. I was so disgusted when I was watching the three movies and seeing zero progress in Rebellion/Resistance movement (again, sorry if I misspell the names). So that Disney trilogy went to a trash bin for me.
@@SunShine-xc6dh The Separatists were not established in The Phantom Menace, the Trade Federation was. The Trade Federation may be part of the Separatists in Attack of the Clones, but the Separatists are a much bigger than they are. It is a movement of systems that wish to secede from the Republic that was formed offscreen in-between movies. I think the tyranny of the Empire is easy to grasp just fine in the OT and you get to see some of its inner workings with the meeting with Tarkin in ANH and the meetings with the Emperor in Empire and Return, as well as the officers who report to Vader. In the prequels we only get two meeting for the separatists, and they are really brief and do not give us that much perspective as to why they wish to secede from the Republic as a whole.
An interesting suggestion but the question then remains about time. AotC is the 2nd longest at 2hrs 22 mins (of 6 movies) and while the theme of the scenes you suggested fits in with the Macro view, there's few times where one could add or change a scene to show this idea. The best I could come up with are: A change to the scene in Palpatine's office, a hologram showing the changes to galaxy over a period of time; A change to the scene on Genosis with Dooku, again a hologram showing the systems changing allegiance; and finally remove some of the Dooku chase scene to include a separatist council setting with Dooku via hologram while on his way to Coruscant. These 3 make the most sense since its already established that Sidious controls both sides and AotC makes it clear the Separatists follow the charismatic leader, Count Dooku. Again good suggestion but one that comes at some cost to redo the scenes (A Small Fanfilm might be able to do it)
@@meh3277 Very true, it is a long film. It is actually 9 minutes longer than the Phantom Menace (if we are talking about theatrical versions). I do applaud George for making a noir/romance Star Wars movie that feels very different from the others. It is a big reason why it has been growing on me as of recently. I guess George wanted to focus less on the macro scale and more on the micro scale. Focus on two lovers during uncertain times and on the edge of war. I do like your suggestions; they are non-intrusive ways of adding context to an already long movie. I think the most we get in the main cut of the movie is Count Dooku's explanation to Obi-Wan that the senate is being controlled by Darth Sidious. He phrases it as a way that makes it seem like that is the reason why so many systems wish to leave the Republic. I think for the cut we got, it works fine, but I would have liked a little more meat to it.
I lost my mom when i was 7 years old, something people don't understand is how much we are afraid of losing the people we love. That's why Anakin asks that way. He will do anything not to lose Padme.
I can't watch those again. I thought I could re-watch TFA but nope, knowing where it's headed just disgusts me. I've almost successfully convinced myself that they don't exist.
I still think TPM is the worse one. AOTC is underrated and overlooked due to its poor romance. But in actuality, it's quite creepy, written well in that sense. Anakin, young Darth Vader, was able to use the Force mind trick to make his future wife fall in love with him. Has Anakin done anything romantic to earn Padme's love? No. Was Anakin making unwanted moves on her and made her feel uncomfortable? Many times. Yet at the end, she end up falling in love with him. Even in an interview, Nathalie Portman straight out said Padme fell in love with Anakin because of his looks.
I loved episode 2 since I saw it at Chinese Mann on opening night. Most people enjoyed it there. Then the remarks about it being bad started and I noticed people not enjoying it much the second or third time I saw it later in theaters. What can I say? It had issues, but if you watch it for what it is, it’s a pretty good film. I liked it a lot better than episode 1 upon first viewing and haven’t changed my opinion even though people seem to hate episode 2 the most in the prequels.
I've always ranked it 4th out of 6. It's better than ROTJ and TPM (imo). The few cringe moments aren't enough to detract from what the rest of the movie offers. It's by no means a bad movie. And it just looks great even as it ages somewhat. As Adam Savage has said, it's a beautiful movie to just run in the background (which I actually do, often).
My ironic take is that Attack of the Clones is definitely the most underrated Star Wars film, even though I still rank several of the others ahead of it. It’s definitely the most interesting Star Wars film and has a lot of stuff going on that people don’t normally recognize. (Especially considering that George Lucas built Star Wars on narrative inversions (or poetry as he’s been quoted), Attack of the Clones is the inversion of Empire, which itself is an inversion of A New Hope. There’s several storybeats with murky messages because of that.)
Actually both Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire were born in AOTC but the protagonists didn't know it yet. So didn't those people who were too busy hating the movie instead of watching it. AOTC is even more solid than TESB in terms of plot. I watched this movie in theatre when released. I was 14. I never complained about the dialogue. Nevertheless it may be because I watched it dubbed into my native language (European Spanish). Sometimes a good dubbing can fix a bad dialogue.
@@realaidenthomas You're wellcome! The dialogue still received criticism in Spanish reviews. Nonetheless after watching both the original and the Spanish versions I think the latter improved the line delivery a little.
TESB is overrated. The only point its plot has is to take the audience to the "I am your father" scene. At least in AOTC we can see the first steps towards Vader and the Empire. TESB is much better executed than AOTC though.
The fact that people can't see that this is the best film of the trilogy blows my mind. It has flaws, but the flaws with this film aren't anywhere near as severe as the ones with the Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith. Anakin's gradual fall to the dark side is executed remarkably well in this film, unlike Revenge of the Sith, where he goes from being a great guy to doing things that even Darth Vader would have had too much of a conscious to go through with in ten minutes, which totally contradicts the gradual change that the original trilogy alludes to. I'm sorry, but Anakin did not wind up in that suit on day one of joining the dark side. He just didn't.
Years laters, and I STILL cannot understand why people hate Hayden Christensen. Plus, I came back for Anakin's dual wielding and his quote, "I don't like sand."
I know this movie isn't perfect by any means, but I would be straight up lying if I said I didn't love it in spite of all of its flaws, because this movie is genuinely fascinating to watch and think about. The action, the music, the clones, the final battle (all 3 of them), Obi-Wan going on a detective spree, Anakin barely keeping it together after his mom died in his arms and giving into his attraction to Padme during a major war, the gradual layout of the Empire getting started with the war. I found all of that fascinating and pretty compelling.
Thank you for pointing out all of the positives in this movie. People nitpick and focus on the negative and make them seem way worse than they really are. Theres so much to enjoy about Attack of the Clones. I don't feel the same can be said about the sequels...
I wouldn't say that AOTC is good, but when I rewatched it months ago, it wasn't that bad as I remembered it... its watchable but that's as far it improves for me
I'm not blind to the movie's flaws, but I do credit this one with getting me into Star Wars in the first place. I had kind of seen the movies that came out before it (as in my dad dragged me to see them, but I didn't pay attention to the story so I didn't really understand what was going on) but this is the first one I really paid attention to. That makes this one a gateway to me discovering the rest of the franchise, so it's more nostalgia that I have for this one than anything else. But there's still plenty to enjoy about it, and it's world's better than anything Disney has put out in the last 2 years.
Ok imma ignore the fact that you are a Dortmund fan (Bayern Munich fan here) and just say I really liked your vid man. It isn’t a perfect movie but it still has a lot of good moments in here for sure.
Padme (and by extend Luke and Leia) exists for Vader to turn back to Anakin. Palpatine was grooming him and would have turned him anyway, perhaps easier. He just chose to use her to do it.
Its nice to finally hear a fresh perspective that isnt loaded with backhanded anger and resentment. I know this movie aint perfect. But it has alot of setup in it that i think pays off revenge of the sith. Like anakins anger and how it forshadows his eventual descent into the darkside. The origin of the clones and the beginning of the clone wars, and how they play a siginifcant part in order 66 and the extinction of the jedi. The forshadowing of palpatine really being the sith lord behind it all. Theres more than what i said but it is good setup for revenge of the sith which payoffs most of them.
I mean, other than the backhanded anger and resentment towards the sequel trilogy of course, which every person who is talking about the prequel trilogy can't seem to resist not chucking in despite having no relevancy to their points in the video, being movies made over a decade afterwards and by effectively completely different people.
@@destinedwarlord2128 i hadn't seen the sequels trilogy so I can't really judge, I've seen vids about it bashing about it. And yea, feels like they're unnecessary beating down a dead horse at this point. Still thinking of seeing the sequels though.
You earned a subscriber from me. I don't even like AotC that much, but I don't hate it. I think every Star Wars movie has its merits and demerits, and while I don't like AotC as much as you do, I agree with a lot of what you said. I do think the movie suffered a bit from plot convenient occurrences and poor pacing occasionally, but I think the amount of hate it gets is absurd. One thing I don't think you even mentioned was the aesthetic; this movie's aesthetic was like nothing seen before and I LOVE it. I'm just glad to find a Star Wars fan who creates POSITIVE content because it feels like so much of this community just wants to spread hate.
Person watching Star Wars for the first time with no nostalgia for the Prequels here: For me, Attack of the Clones was the worst movie out of the trilogy, but not because it was bad - I actually loved all three of the Prequel movies! It just wasn't as fun and interesting compared to TPM and RotS, though it still had plenty of strong moments, like Yoda VS Dooku, the Zam Wessel chase and the Tusken camp scene (I also found the conversation between captured Obi Wan and Dooku really interesting, for some reason). Then again, I guess I DO have a tendency to like movies people claim to be bad, like Spider-Man 3, The Hobbit trilogy and (please don't kill me) The Last Jedi.
'The Last Jedi' is a decent movie. It's just a terrible sequel. It's like having Ernest Hemingway write chapter eight of a novel by Jane Austen. Hemingway is a good writer, but a chapter by him would be out of place in a Jane Austen novel.
@@BroadMeadow-d9s Even as a film, The Last Jedi is not that good. Apart from a few nice little moments, but so little exploited. Instead, Rey who still doesn't know what she's doing there, Snoke who turned out to be a damp squib, the Finn-Rose arc that ultimately serves no purpose except to slow down the story, just like Laura Dern's annoying character who has no reason not to reveal her plan, instead she sows discord in the crew, Poe has every reason to believe she's a traitor... Only Kylo Ren seems to bring something, but once again he's too sensitive to take on the role of the main villain of the story, he is similar to Anakin episode II (Ironically), and then Luke who never really changed, and who still needs Yoda to move forward. It's still a step backwards. At the end of the film, all the stakes of Episode VII were closed. Episode IX was bound to be a nameless mess.
@@SunShine-xc6dh I never claimed it wasn't fun and interesting. All I said was that it wasn't AS fun and interesting as TPM and RoTS. That doesn't mean that it WASN'T fun and interesting at all, I simply enjoyed watching the other movies in the trilogy a little more (or a lot more, in terms of Revenge of The Sith).
"Attack of the Clones" is my favorite Prequel movie. It's also tied with "The Empire Strikes Back" as my favorite Star Wars movie. I realize there are many people who do not share my opinion of the film. But you know what? Should I really care? I believe I should care about how I feel and no one else.
I'm an old school fan, A New Hope was my VHS that I wore out. When Empire came out there was an event at the local cinema and my dad snuck in with me. There was R5-D4 and Boba Fett wandering around and snacks. I took my nephew to see Jedi when it came out. I had issues with the prequels. But I love all of them anyway and honestly maybe Clones is my favourite honestly. I forgive a lot because so much is right. But this is where nobody else seems to agree with me lol AoTC is my least favourite score and Across the Stars just doesn't really get me like virtually everything else Williams has written. The callback to Duel of the Fates with Anakin on the speeder bike is epic but, yeah, I prefer every other Star Wars soundtrack. I still really like it, don't get me wrong but, and nobody else I know agrees.
The love story is backwards, too. Actually, it's a marriage story. Anakin and Padme meet right away and are never parted throughout the movie. They're literally together in good times and in bad times. But the wedding occurs at the end of it, not the beginning.
After watching The Phantom Menace, I began to wonder if Lucas should be confined to the director's chair and kept out of the writers room. After Attack of the Clones, I was certain.
I think there's a lot of groupthink. Something becomes the accepted POV (that AOTC is awful or that TDKR is awful) and people just go with it. That's not to say these movies are perfect or that you can't find fault with them.
If you really think about it, attack of the clones is the greatest movie ever made and now movies can stop being made because theres nowhere else to go. Movies are finished now.
Attack of the Clones is definitely not the worst Prequel (that's Phantom Menace) and its definitely not the worst in the whole saga. Episodes 7 through 9 are far worse than even Phantom Menace.
ATOC is definitely the weakest, but it's still good and could be so much better if they just release an extended edition eith some of the deleted scenes added back in. Most notable ones being Obi Wan and Mace talk about Anakin in the hanger, An extended Anakin & Padme arrival scene, meeting Padme's family sequence, Anakin & Padme speak refuse Count Dooku's offer to join the Separatists and their trial. All these scenes would've helped the film. Whoever was in charge of editing should've been fired.
like a couple other people have said, i think the biggest critique i have for this film is the dialogue and how .. poorly it's written. i adore ewan mcgregor and hayden christensen so i may be a little (a lot) biased but they did their best with a flimsy script and in my opinion it doesn't take away from what's so great about this movie. i think you really hit the nail on the head here
I used to consider it the worst one and out of the original six, it might be. But that doesn't mean that there is nothing to like here. I always thought it was a movie of strong bookends either side of an uneven middle section. I really like the start (up until the group splits up) and the finale (the Arena onwards). Everything between is divided between Obi Wan's detective-story (which I enjoy a lot) and the Padme/Anakin-Love story, which has potential and I get what its trying to do, but let down somewhat by clunky dialogue. That, some jarring tonal shifts and the annoying "Humor" around C3POs mishaps on Geonosis (which I actually like less than anything JarJar-related) are my main criticisms of AOTC. I can still rewatch it, though, unlike the so-called Sequels.
haven't watched the video yet but YES IT FCKING WAS listen I love the prequels I adore them really Jango is my favourite Bounty Hunter and Qui-gon is my top 3 fav Jedi, Naboo my favourite planet (after alderaan, but that one kinda blew up) and I just love the era in general, but for duck's sake, Anakin's dialogue is so horrible and awkard it's cringy as shit and makes me want to throw myself off the window every time I watch the movie. The rest of it is pretty good I'd say but those anakin-padme scenes really hurt
'Attack of the Clones' had a few weak scenes (Anakin and Padme scenes were clumsy/awkward), but the rest of the film is quite good--the world-building, the continued rise of Palpatine, the clones, Dooku, etc.
Has everyone already forgotten about episodes 8 & 9 , so why are we still going on and on about the prequels ? Because let's be honest , the prequels were definitely much better , and unlike episode 9 , didn't totally retcon and ruin the end of Return of the Jedi .
Not so much bad as I'd call it the weakest of the 6 films despite some memorable scenes and Dooku, who should have had more screen time and fleshing out. Hayden handles his scenes pretty well, although Anakin can be insufferable at times and Natalie Portman is more nuanced than I had remembered.
It used to be the worst from the bunch in my opinion, BOY, was I misjudging it... Incomes Sequel Trilogy Rise Of Strong Independent Female Character that can overcome any challenge without breaking a sweat because, she's just that powerful in the force.
If I have to say anything, I'd say this video is a lot of nothing. Alright, yes, the character dialogue is straightforward and is therefore them talking as exactly who they are. That's all well and good. However, what about that stops the dialogue from being low-quality? The issue most people find with the script is because it's so straightforward. No subtlety, nothing to unpack. Just straight up beating you over the head with the obviousness and rigidity. Also, why did you only look at the first line of that Business Insider quote in regards to the love story of Anakin and Padme? There was an entire paragraph there detailing their thoughts and you just powered past that and went on a tangent only about the first line about Padme existing to die. I'd say that quote overall makes a very valid point and you've just ignored 90% of it. The rest is pretty much just "CGI good, sound design good, movie's not that bad, ok bye", which I guess the first two are valid enough, although really it's only TPM's CGI that has ever been massively noted as being truly out of place, and having good sound design in a franchise where every single movie and nearly every tv show is pretty much at the top of its game in terms of sound design is a bit of an empty compliment. In all honesty, you have a lot to work on in terms of how you make these points. You will always get the people onside just by simply saying AotC isn't that bad of a movie, your video could be total gibberish and would still get hundreds of likes alone from that, but it's not that hard to see past it all if you have any sort of impartial viewpoint.
It’s so bad, ten mins in my heart just sank and I had to endure the rest, Hayden’s acting was… improved dramatically in the the next film and subsequent work, this entire movie was just a swing and a miss.
I would like to put forward the argument that it isn't Anakin that we hate, but rather, the version of him that was presented to us in George Lucas's script, and under his direction. The way Anakin was written, on paper, is perfect for Darth Vader; the motivation is there, the tragedy of his life gives him a darkness right from the get go, but the way George Lucas portrays him is of someone who sounds entitled, whiny, arrogant, and generally obnoxious. With Luke, it's not so much that I grew up with him, but it's that his circumstances were vastly different to Anakin's. Luke was a normal teenager; he hated chores, wanted to hang out with his friends, definitely didn't want to go out and fight an evil empire -- but as the movies went on, Luke grew and developed into a stronger character, and he lost those whiny teenage aspects of him along the way. Anakin never did, and it wasn't his fault -- it was the scripts. My argument for him is, instead, to look at the Clone Wars animated series. THAT is the Anakin that people wanted; he's cocky, powerful, a bit whiny at times but no more than anyone else would be. It's a version of Anakin that was allowed to express his emotions in a way that felt natural, a version that grew bitter with how much red tape he had to get through to do what had to be done, a version that was terrified of losing the people he loved, and who grew more and more scared as the series went on. He was betrayed, suppressed, afraid, and when the day he became Darth Vader happened, it wasn't because Obi Wan didn't respect him, and that the Jedi didn't accept him onto the counter; it was because he KNEW that the Jedi couldn't do what needed to be done, that they would let Padme die, that they would fail him -- everyone -- like they always did, all the time, because they just aren't able to see the galaxy for what it is. Palpatine offered a better future, one where Anakin didn't have to lose the people he loved, one where he wouldn't be lied too, or be betrayed, or told 'no' by people too incompetent to actually see what was going on around them. He would do what needed to be done, even if it was horrible, because what waited at the end would be better for everyone who was left. And he was wrong. He was betrayed, he was lied too, and he lost everyone he ever cared about. It was a story about arrogance and fear, a story about love and how far one can go to preserve it, to save it, only to lose it all at the end. Darth Vader is supposed to be a man fueled by hatred, someone who unintentionally killed everything he wanted to preserve, and uses that hatred of himself to continue to commit atrocities -- someone who, deep down, still wants to be good, but doesn't have anyone left who is strong enough to reach into that darkness to find that last ember of light. But, if you just watched the prequel movies, Anakin is a guy who lost his mother, who was afraid of losing his wife, and who felt unappreciated by those around him so he gravitated to the one person who praised him, complimented him, acknowledged him -- to the person who promised him that he could save his wife if he sided with him, and so he did. It's a version of Anakin that comes off as arrogant, whiny, entitled, and narcissistic. One of those versions of Anakin I can easily see inside of the Darth Vader suit. The other, I can't.
EII isn't that bad. Most of the hate we see today had been put in motion by Red Letter Media Mr Plinketts Prequel Reviews. EII actually got quite good reviews and in comparison to the EI, it was something that finally resembled an actual movie. Today it's all about the sand bullcrap, but back then nobody cared. So what, Anakin can't talk to girls, big deal. 90% of the audience couldn't. The problem is that it is almost impossible for a regular person to understand how the movie landed with the audiences. You either had to be there more than 22 years ago or you need to dig deep & get to the actual contemporary reviews. Watching YT videos made 15 or 20 years later won't tell you a thing.
Yes The A-plot with Obi-Wan is very convoluted and has way too many plot conveniences for me to enjoy it, there's also the fact that Obi-Wan and the Jedi never have an issue with the clone template being with the CIS, or they're just too stupid to realize because the dark side is clouding them or something. The B-plot with Anakin and Padme is quite possibly the worst love story put to film and it's funny you said that Lucas thought they had good chemistry because their chemistry in the movie is weak at best. Anakin (Aka young Darth Vader; one of the most iconic movie villains) is a whiny b*tch, and I don't really like Luke when he is whiny either, but I don't think the comparison is fair because Luke becomes a better character throughout A New Hope and the rest of the trilogy. I don't care how revolutionary it was for the time, the CGI hasn't aged well and I'll take the practical effects from the OT and the mix of practical effects and CGI from Phantom Menace over the over reliance on CGI in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. The acting is very wooden, which is a problem with all 3 prequels. And, the final act isn't that great. Just a big CGI battle and then the worst lightsaber duel in the prequels, also, Padme shouldn't have been able to survive the arena battle, 92% of the Jedi there didn't and they have the force and lightsabers. I think this is the worst movie out of the original 6 and I don't care what Lucas' intentions are or what his vision was because none of that matters when the execution was terrible.
When The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker exist there is no way in HELL it's the worst movie. Even if those didn't exist it can still stand on its own.
One thing about AOTC, I can still turn off my brain and enjoy it at the worst parts. Unfortunately I cannot dumb my brain down enough for TLJ and TROS. I might never come back.
theyre not bad either and youre the reason why george lucas sold the franchise
@@iplaydodgeball people like you are the reason why Disney dares to produce such garbage.
I love Attack of the Clones. It's the first time we see Obi-Wan in charge, and his growth from being the student in Phantom Menace. Anakin starts out kinda whiny, but everything from his arrival on Tatooine to the end of the movie is gold.
Congrats! You a true fan of crap! Take a bow!
Doesn't make it good just because it's experimental. The writing is awful no matter what. I still enjoy the movie, just hard to look past the flaws..
@@jamesclarke6189I don’t think the story writing is awful, just the dialogue. Which I’ll give you that but still
People should learn to concentrate on a movie the time it lasts and not just spitting trash.
@@swamp9121 the story writing is awful as well, there are so many logic gaps in the decisions the characters make

I probably watched AoTc more than any of them tbh . I had it on dvd before 3 came out and I wore it out as a kid , especially having battlefront 1 and all the action figures from the movies . It was a good time for Star Wars kids . And to this day I still love second one .
Preach it bro!!!!
@@realaidenthomas Nah, episode 8 is the worst.
AotC is wonderful movie.
Cap😂
Anakin in ROTS was a big improvement. If that’s how he was in all 3 prequels, these movies wouldn’t have faced so much critique.
Because he was given proper development. I think TPM should've done what AOTC did(just age Anakin a little bit first) then have him be more hero-like in AOTC and then have ROTS showcase his downfall. I know that George wanted him to be a pure boy in TPM but it didn't work .
@@orbaitv5991hero like murdering children
@@orbaitv5991 Personally, I think it worked. The prequels in a flawed way, still shows us the journey of a boy going from a slave to youngling to Padawan to Jedi Knight (in the micro series) to Sith Lord.
The point was to show his development and set up his conflict leading to the dark side.
Not at all.
I will forever be grateful to AOTC for two things: the clone troopers - and Obi-wan's delivery of "Good job".
Shes mentally challenged
I loved this movie back in 2002! I love it even more now!!
That 11 minutes are enough to make Count Dooku a certified badass, though. A bit more minutes on Christopher Lee wouldn't hurt, too
That's all the story required though.
_"This is how it happened."_
To me, this made sense as to how the Empire could have a seemingly infinite number of disposable Storm Troopers to do their evil bidding - because this movie implied that they were literally _bred to be soldiers;_ mindless drones who follow orders and nothing else. And I stand by that, regardless of how recent changes to the canon make the claim that the clones were phased-out and replaced with recruits or conscriptees - to me that makes less sense. Because when you have an army of slaves bred for war that you can order by the millions, then you don't have to _pay them._ And when you're a tyrannical dictatorship that controls the means of production, _you don't have to pay for their creation._
Needless to say, I've always felt this movie was underrated.
This! i too had a lot of thought on how it all went down when we only had the original 3 movies.
But good luck getting them to give THAT a chance
to some extent i could make the same argument about the sequels, i for one was waiting all three movies for them to reveal that Ben and Ray were actually brother and sister, and that han and leia were the parents she remembered, and that they had abandoned her in case the dark side took over their family again there would be another hope for balance in the force
HOWEVER, i do believe there is solid objective arguments for why the sequels are bad.
Yes Anakin is arrogant, that's the whole point. If he weren't arrogant he wouldn't have turned to the dark side.
Beautifully put! Agree with you 1000% my guy 🙌
Dude wouldn't that be something! I think we all rewatch Revenge of the Sith hoping everytime he doesn't go to the darkside. lol
Why do they need to reestablish something already established in the previous movie? They are more fleshed out than the empire of the ot
He will do anything not to lose Padme.
i’ll rewatch this over the sequels anyways ( i love the prequels )

I've almost successfully convinced myself that they don't exist.
11:39 how did bro casually drop one of the best anakin edits ever in a vid 🔥
I still think TPM is the worse one. AOTC is underrated and overlooked due to its poor romance. But in actuality, it's quite creepy, written well in that sense. Anakin, young Darth Vader, was able to use the Force mind trick to make his future wife fall in love with him. Has Anakin done anything romantic to earn Padme's love? No. Was Anakin making unwanted moves on her and made her feel uncomfortable? Many times. Yet at the end, she end up falling in love with him. Even in an interview, Nathalie Portman straight out said Padme fell in love with Anakin because of his looks.
Not the worst Star Wars movie but I feel it’s weakest of the Lucas saga.
I think it's the best alongside The Empire Strikes Back.
The weakest to my mind is Return of the Jedi.
People in their 40s (likely OT purists) who claim they still don't understand the plot of Ep1 or Ep2... Concerns me greatly, lol.
You know what? I wanna watch AotC again. Thanks for this awesome analysis.
This was the movie that brought me into Star Wars and it’s still my favourite movie of the series
I honestly have never considered watching it and seeing the delivery in a different language. Thanks for the story; I loved reading it!
@@realaidenthomas
You're wellcome! The dialogue still received criticism in Spanish reviews. Nonetheless after watching both the original and the Spanish versions I think the latter improved the line delivery a little.
More solid than ESB 😂😂😂😂😂
TESB is overrated. The only point its plot has is to take the audience to the "I am your father" scene. At least in AOTC we can see the first steps towards Vader and the Empire. TESB is much better executed than AOTC though.
The original dialogue is awesome, actually.
Anakin’s fear of Padme dying turned him to the darkside. He lost his mother and he didn’t want to loose Padme as well.
You didn't pay attention. Anakin turning to the darkside happened over the course of three films. Hardly a matter of "ten minutes".
Great video you deserve more subs, stick with it !
Thank you. I loved Attack of the Clones as a kid. I watched it so much on dvd.
just the fact AOTC is the only movie to feature jango fett is a HUGE plus
I used to watch the entire movie just to watch everything from the arena to the end. Also, Anakin with a green lightsaber.
I'd literally watch AOTC over ROTJ

Padme was the best here, not a pregnant prop.
Dooku was actually great.

To all the people who think the dialogue is cringey, have you ever met a teenager? Or someone who has been emotionally isolated?

Person watching Star Wars for the first time with no nostalgia for the Prequels here:
For me, Attack of the Clones was the worst movie out of the trilogy, but not because it was bad - I actually loved all three of the Prequel movies!
I'm with you on spiderman 3.
Claims it wasn't fun and interesting but like the lat jedi where the main plot point was a low fuel light coming on
@@SunShine-xc6dh I never claimed it wasn't fun and interesting.
Of course not. Everything from Disney Star Wars is immeasurably worse
Great video. I absolutely love this movie
For me ROTJ is the worst of the main Six films
I'm an old school fan, A New Hope was my VHS that I wore out. When Empire came out there was an event at the local cinema and my dad snuck in with me. There was R5-D4 and Boba Fett wandering around and snacks. I took my nephew to see Jedi when it came out.
I had issues with the prequels. But I love all of them anyway and honestly maybe Clones is my favourite honestly. I forgive a lot because so much is right.
But this is where nobody else seems to agree with me lol
AoTC is my least favourite score and Across the Stars just doesn't really get me like virtually everything else Williams has written. The callback to Duel of the Fates with Anakin on the speeder bike is epic but, yeah, I prefer every other Star Wars soundtrack. I still really like it, don't get me wrong but, and nobody else I know agrees.
AOTC is severely under appreciated, It’s better than everything post 2015
The love story is backwards, too.
Actually, it's a marriage story. Anakin and Padme meet right away and are never parted throughout the movie. They're literally together in good times and in bad times. But the wedding occurs at the end of it, not the beginning.
All the prequels are good, but ep 3 is amazing
After watching The Phantom Menace, I began to wonder if Lucas should be confined to the director's chair and kept out of the writers room.
After Attack of the Clones, I was certain.
I think there's a lot of groupthink. Something becomes the accepted POV (that AOTC is awful or that TDKR is awful) and people just go with it. That's not to say these movies are perfect or that you can't find fault with them.
1 thru 6 people. Stop acting like disneys attempts count
The sw fans that say these movies are bad will still quote them 99 procent of the times they quote star wars
It is much better than Episode I and its trade federations. I like it.
like a couple other people have said, i think the biggest critique i have for this film is the dialogue and how .. poorly it's written. i adore ewan mcgregor and hayden christensen so i may be a little (a lot) biased but they did their best with a flimsy script and in my opinion it doesn't take away from what's so great about this movie. i think you really hit the nail on the head here
The dialogue is not that Bad 😮
Bad dialog based on what? Normal people? Because in jedi aren't Normal people they are an isolationist religious sect that shuns 'Normal' interactions
It really goes to show how good George Lucas is as a writer
Frankly it's a lot better than Empire Strikes Back
I used to consider it the worst one and out of the original six, it might be.
Hal9000 edit of Attack of the Clones makes it incredibly better.
haven't watched the video yet but YES IT FCKING WAS
listen I love the prequels I adore them really Jango is my favourite Bounty Hunter and Qui-gon is my top 3 fav Jedi, Naboo my favourite planet (after alderaan, but that one kinda blew up) and I just love the era in general, but for duck's sake, Anakin's dialogue is so horrible and awkard it's cringy as shit and makes me want to throw myself off the window every time I watch the movie. The rest of it is pretty good I'd say but those anakin-padme scenes really hurt
I can’t believe I’m so late to a video, I have failed as a supporter
Worst Star Wars films:
The Force Awaken
The Last Jede
Rise of Skywalker
Awesome movie. 10/10, just like the rest of George Lucas' Star Wars films.
Can never be the worst one. Especially compared with the Disney Nonsense!
Compared to what Disney keeps cranking out these days, AoTC looks like "Citizen Kane..."
'Attack of the Clones' had a few weak scenes (Anakin and Padme scenes were clumsy/awkward), but the rest of the film is quite good--the world-building, the continued rise of Palpatine, the clones, Dooku, etc.
Assuming they weren't supposed to be clumsy and awkward
Has everyone already forgotten about episodes 8 & 9 , so why are we still going on and on about the prequels ? Because let's be honest , the prequels were definitely much better , and unlike episode 9 , didn't totally retcon and ruin the end of Return of the Jedi .
Yes yes yes all the prequels sucks!
No. It’s not. I will always love it. It will always have the prettiest sets in my eyes therefore I will always love it.
I liked the movie even Hayden didn't display a good acting technique. People who hate it aren´t star wars fans.
It’s so bad, ten mins in my heart just sank and I had to endure the rest, Hayden’s acting was… improved dramatically in the the next film and subsequent work, this entire movie was just a swing and a miss.
"Padme only exist to die" I mean did they see the prequels
To quote Caravan of Garbage, "you're allowed to like this awful movie." 😅
I love this movie in black and white
Dude it's my favorite one lol
Short answer.....Yes
Yes. Yes it is.
People have way too high expectations of Star Wars. It's Star Wars, not Citizen Kane. AOTC is good!
With Episodes 7-9 and the two Ewok Movies in existence, AotC CAN´T be the worst.
Yes
The A-plot with Obi-Wan is very convoluted and has way too many plot conveniences for me to enjoy it, there's also the fact that Obi-Wan and the Jedi never have an issue with the clone template being with the CIS, or they're just too stupid to realize because the dark side is clouding them or something.
Not reading all that
@@rankrodent2772 TLDR is that, yes, it is that bad.
Aotc has its obvious flaws but I always thought it was overhated
