- Everything you need to know to build the automatic water change system I use here is explained, as well as why you should not be concerned about losing an occasional rare fish as you learn how to keep them!
I really appreciate the fact that you impart INFORMATION on your channel, as opposed to the tiresome 'personality shows' many engage in. No need to answer.
Thank you for making these videos Greg! Need more guys like you in this hobby!
Your integrity balances your passion for the hobby, your business profitability, and your attitude of helpfulness towards us learners, in a way that’s wonderful! A million thanks 🙏🏽
The "special lab" comment got me rolling. So funny!
this is BY FAR the best video i have watched on that type of drainage system. Thanks. And keep up the great work
is the dechlorinator built into the system ? or how are you going about it?
I would also like to know this as well
The water supply will be going through a hma or a ro filter
Well you did a great job of explaining the drain system, but you kind of left out how exactly you’re supposed to make the fill part and connect both to your water supply. For someone with zero knowledge of plumbing, pvc and really everything DIY it’s like I’ve been half the equation and told to solve for X
Maybe it’s just me being slow though because everyone else in the comments seems to be understanding things just fine…😅
Nice touch on the tank level checks, and very informative and well made video. That’s an awful lot of pvc to replace a single drilled bulkhead though. Glad the system is working for you!
Look like a good set up but how do you remove chloramines?
Can you make this for like a python hose system? I don’t have a bathroom near me... It’s across the hallway and I don’t think my parents will appreciate having tubes going all over the place.
awesome setup. i have the know how to do this ,but i rent .so for now i will just use my pump and hose to drain tanks ,then i use a whole house filter and a hose to fill the tanks.
This is great. I'm new to the hobby and was thinking about this exact same system but never found any info or anyone who has done it.
Thank you so for sharing your ideas and knowledge with everyone and not hold it back
I must be a good aquarist - I have a special lab just like yours! As usual, I learned quite a few things. Your Q&A are so informative!
I'm so grateful you made this video. You explain it so well that I'm able to adjust and use this for my needs. My fish room is small (11 tanks and 2 tubs for snail grow-out atm ), but I still don't have the time to water change each tank individually. This helps immensely! Thank You
Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule for these videos. They are really great and have lots of good info in them.
hi, great vid, what would happen if you made a threaded hole in the top cap where the hole is now and fitted it with a airline valve, connect an airline then run it inside the tank and suction cup it to the side at the level you want your water to be at. will it drain to that level? also will you be able to adjust the drained water in the tank by adjusting the level of the airline outlet in the tank? I need to make one and test but if you have done this pls let me know how it worked, tks again for the vid.
So do you have any declorination running through the water or is it just regular tap water
Diy overflow not really consistent i try some of my tank already
When you install your overflow on tanks, do you need to have access to the backs of the aquariums? Or can you have racks of tanks back to back?
A great informational video Greg. The system is just what I'm looking for instead of drilling holes in tanks, as at present I only have 5 tanks but will be adding more soon and looking for an easier system to what I presently use due to a back problem I have.
please keep up your videos i love em.
Thank you very much for the instruction and the encouragement! I currently happen to be learning repetitively about the keeping(murdering) of Blue Dream neos. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong as I am able to keep the orange neos in good health. It's possibly the 'new to me' substrate in those tanks as compared to the 'regular old' gravel in the orange tank, but who knows? They really don't look all that good on black substrate anyhow, so I'll probably change it out before the next batch. Or, start a new tank! :D
Thank you Greg the info you provided is in creditable. The drain system will be used in my new fish room / shed and the fish well speaks for itself so when my room gets up and running I’ll be ordering
You sir are a genius. Been looking for something that is no drill DIY and fool proof like this. Truly a life saver to find this
This is the basic system I'm going to use for my fish room move to the outside shed. Only difference will be it will all go into a fifty five gallon tub which will then be pumped into my pond them to my garden and then back to the city.
Thank you
those blue striped goodieds are really awesome looking Greg. This was a very informative video - thanks for all the awesome work you do!
Amazing what a guy 😁👌
Thank you for all you do- this is amazing and so useful. Thank you.
Pure genius!
thanks
How do you dechlorinate? I may have missed it. We have chloramine in my area so I dechlorinate my water in a brute trash can before pumping into the tanks (time consuming only holds 45 gallons and I have 30 tanks)
Why not using reverseosmosis? Using chemicals to declorinate is so against building a nature habitat in your home. It's like taking pills, instead of eating healthy.
@@0Turbox reverse osmosis takes out the nutrients in the water that my fish need. I would have to add back to the ro water for all the fish I keep.
@@dwsnono9104 There are no nutrients in water, you may mix it up with minerals. If there are nutrients in water, you call it soup ;) You can add minerals back to distilled water, there are several products for it on the market. One cheap solution can be, if you grind sepia carapace and add it to the water and also salt. Fish get their nutrition over their food.
Show de bola.
You can email me at selectaquatics@gmail.com, and we can talk about your setup - Greg Sage
They are doing well here, and I have been gradually shipping them out to wait list customers! Congrats on getting them doing well - there are many that want them! Send me an email at selectaquatics@gmail.com. Thank you!
Why do you have a separate drain line for each level of shelving? Why not have it all drain to one pipe and then out to the drain? Seems like an excess of pvc, valves and solenoids. Please tell me what I'm missing! Very informative, thank you.
Thank you for sharing. I love your videos. I always watch them more than once. Hope you are doing great Greg! - Little Bobby
i have belonsix from trinidad and i want some help sir
Email me at selectaquatics@gmail.com, and I would be happy to discuss your belonosox further!
And except for an occasional siphon that may lose its siphon, nothing has ever broken! Greg
having pipes everywhere like that would do my head in...lol ,great info though if i can get over that
Omg I'm only up to 10 tanks and I'm losing my mind trying to keep up with water changes. Although, I mostly keep koi and goldfish so the tanks are a *bit* bigger than average! My supply water is untrustworthy so it goes through a whole house carbon filter and then a water softener first and then I "make" batches of water in garbage cans lol. I am desperately looking to improve my method, but I run into problems because a lot of the tanks sit on the floor.
Would you loose all of your siphons if the power went out? Causing your tanks to overflow
I understand the hobby completely but when you have so many tanks to take care of, i feel as if you never get to enjoy it.
thanks Greg! i really enjoyed this info and maybe one day ill do this
right now i only have 9 tanks.
Beautifully simple...will add to my 75 g. T hank you and keep the vids rolling
I enjoyed the video yesterday and have to say it was another GREAT informative video. I enjoy the fact that after watching one of your videos I'm always informed, but even better, I've learned something very valuable and practical. Keep them coming. I don't need to be entertained, I watch videos to learn things that I can apply to my own situation. Thanks again! --Michael
Thank you, Michael!
OMG that is such a perfect answer. You cannot be afraid to fail to keep fish!!!
Actually, I do not dechlorinate. Greg Sage
This is great information for all those with multiple tank syndrome. I would only imagine the time this has saved you.
Well that's a whole experience put in this video
Excellent just what I needed Greg much respect
Great video, definitely solves my issue on trying to figure out how to get auto drain for tanks. Does the size of the loop you use to maintain the siphon matter? I notice most of yours go 75% of the way down the tank, is that necessary to keep it below where they intake is in the aquarium? Thanks in advance
The external loop, if it is too shallow, may lose its siphon more frequently. The depth of the external loop was simply where I found holding on to the siphon to be most consistent. Some people go deeper, I have not found that to be necessary.
Amazing setup. Looks great sir.
So sweet I want set something like this up.
i like the setup but way too many valves and areas for it to break. I liked how you explained how this system worked.
Fortunately, with the exception of a knob breaking off once in 20 years, there have been no other breaks or mechanical problems. Greg Sage
Sorry - but I have to respond! I set out to do exactly that - Thank you!
Maybe I missed it but how do you neutralize chlorine?
Very good, Thank You
Amazing informational video. I have been trying to figure this out for awhile now and accidentally stumbled upon your video. How lucky! Thanks!
I always wondered how you maintained the syphon. Thanks for the video!
So when you do lose syphon on a tank, do you walk in to a flood?
Ah, never mind you answered me😉
When siphon breaks and you have to remove the pipe to start it how do you have enough time to put the pipe pipe back without spilling water everywhere?
Great Question. There is a way to create a pvc line that will not spill, but it would require an extra valve on each drain setup, so I just do it commando and quickly. And with some thought beforehand, and quick, efficient movement, you can do it and spill very little. I will also just put a 5 gallon bucket beneath where I'm working, and fortunately, I need to restart a siphon very rarely.
Thank you. Enjoying your very informative videos, thanks for sharing.
Hello, would this system work on a aquarium maintained only half full? Thank you.
In other words, if I want to maintain the water line at 50% aquarium height :).
It could but losing the siphon in the PVC would be just that much more prone to happening. If you used the first set up, where you drained and filled with the same line, it would work better. Good luck!
thank you!
Sure wish I could like this video more. Thanks for the multiple mind vitamins.
What don't you like? Greg
Sorry for the misunderstanding. What I was trying to say is I wish there was a way to hit the like button multiple times. In my opinion your are a great gift to the fish keeping realm. The Best!!!
Thank you! Greg
will this works on tanks that are located on the floor (not on table)?
You will want the drain line from the aquarium to go to a drain where the water will flow quickly, and where you want it to go as a result of being on a decline from the tank to the drain, wherever the drain is located. You do not want a drain line that is so level that water accumulates in the piping when it is not actively draining, and to do this, the origin of the drain should be at least a foot above the ground, assuming your drain entrance is at ground level. I generally ensure that any tank with a drain line starts off mounted at least a foot off the ground, simply so that I give myself some incline to work with. Make sense?
Greg Sage make sense. Thank you Greg!
What do you not like? Greg
Due to timing I think you meant my dislike? I subscribe to your channel because I *DO* like your knowledge and content very much!♥ And I agree with Mike, your sharing this craft is so kind and needed. I just don't like his lumping an entire generation into one pile, and a nasty one at that.
They are not Soulless.
A person could write off an entire section of humanity if they wish, but shouldn't then be surprised when they find that section has written *them* off as well...
The best way to 'reach' a generation is to try to understand them not condemn them.
Gotcha - I spend many hours a day answering emails from younger people, most that genuinely want to do well, and come from a background of being a K-12 teacher, where I well realize that the future of these fish in the hobby rests in the hands of our younger generation. My efforts here are to get some of that information that I used to get from having nearly memorized a number of aquarium books that were widely available and that I always made a point of purchasing as soon as I could. Today, the transferring of information is different, and I hope to reach many of the young people that I write, by producing these UA-cam videos. This is why initially I had thought you had a complaint - and asked so that I might improve what I'm doing.
You're an artist worthy of an apprentice. Would be nice if this skill is passed on to the soulless millennial generation.

Doing my best...:) Thank you! Greg
Greg Sage please don't let your craft die. My biggest regret is giving away old books, mainly my freshwater aquarium ones.... maybe consider writing one. Godspeed
Thank you! Greg
When each shelf line does not not go directly to the main drain line, you will end up with water mixing up between tanks. Top shelf will drain into middle shelf tanks, etc. You definitely do not want that. So each shelf goes independently down to the main drain line with no potential for backup. Greg Sage
I change about 15% a day, and am not concerned about dechlorinating. Greg Sage
A totally, I do not dechlorinate, and by keeping daily water changes at 20% or lower there has not been an issue. Greg Sage, selectaquatics.com
Water must be cheap in your area.
Fortunately, I do not need to deal with chloramines where I am. Greg Sage
Thank you! Greg Sage
