    Looking good! You should make sure the drip emitters are above the water line. Also, they will clog so be mindful.

      Thanks Michael! I watched the videos on your system, they were extremely helpful. You’re 100% right, I’ve already had a few clog on me! Devising a plan to keep them above the water line, thanks for stopping by!!

      could also back siphon. but considering how high they hang probably not.

    I am interested in setting up something like this but i was just wondering, surly if the water is coming straight from the hose then it’s not been treated? Or does it not affect your fish because it’s a small amount

      Great points. I briefly mention at about 2:27 that the water passes through a homemade DIY carbon filter. There is a tag that pops up in top right corner which brings you to the video I watched to make it. The carbon takes out many impurities but I also only do 10-20% water changes maximum at any time. It’s generally considered safe to add water without treating it as long as it’s a “small” percentage....however there is risk involved. I want to add a more complex prefilter at some point.

    Hi Ryan, just a quick question. With regards to the carbon filter you have there on the wall, how long before you have to remove it and change the things inside it ?? I am in the process of doing the planning of how to set up my tank air and water system, being that some of my tanks are in separate rooms inside my house lounge room and dining room and the rest are in the old kitchen at the other end of the house.. hmm any help or ideas would be appreciated.

    Ryan, where do you buy the bulk carbon and how long will a system like this effectively remove the chlorine?

    If I ever do something similar, I'd use RO mechanical and carbon filters. Also, there is a LED controller on eBay/Ali with a timer function that can easily drive a relay to turn on/off an electric valve.

    How many gallons of water do you think that charcoal filter could handle before you need to replace the carbon?

    • @WildFishTanks
      @WildFishTanks 6 років тому +1

      That’s a great question and I’m not 100% to be honest. I plan on changing it every 3 months. This is something I need to do more research into but I always keep it to 10%, 20% max in any one day

    Greetings Ryan. Nice video as always. At the ornamental fish farm we used the same system for water changes. I kept asking myself a question about these automatic systems, what is the percentage of "new" water that enters the tank that goes directly to the drain, before mixing with the "old water" or even better, pushing "old water" out? I thought that to optimize water changes in the fish farm (where you have big mass of fish per water volume and a lot of waste) I could make my self a "conical" tank bottom that converges to a valve. Open the valve and you can remove water + litter that sinks to the bottom, close valve and only then add "new" water. In fish farming you have high fish density per unit of water and this may save a lot of labour in cleaning. At home, people will not use tanks with conical bottoms. After all you want to add gravel and plants and make conditions optimal for aquarium creatures. Anyhow I think this is a nice subject for thought and discussion.

      Thank you my Portuguese friend. I have seen people with fish rooms like mine use a system like that and I agree it works well for many reasons. If I had bare bottom tanks and just wanted to breed, I think I would use that model. I watched some of your wood oven videos, you are very creative and innovative!!

    Any ideas on ways to get bigger tanks for pretty cheap in Cali?

    • @WildFishTanks
      @WildFishTanks 6 років тому

      I think your the one who needs to give me advice, you were the one who just found a free 80 gallon! Lol getting tanks cheap or free is always a crapshoot and a timing thing. You can set alerts on craigslist, that is my best bet. As far as cheap ones you just have to keep an eye on craigslist, offer up, let go, Facebook, etc. Once you get over 75 gallons it’s hard to get a good deal, atleast by me. If you do find larger ones they are usually brown trim and sometimes leak.

    Looks really simple - so it requires how many plumbing degrees? I actually enjoy water changes and my fishroom is too small for auto changing at the moment. If I ever get my rack of 20s in, I might be a convert.

    Great tanks and set up but I'm afraid it's not 10 percent water change because water exiting the tank is half freshwater and half old tank water which is more like 5 percent water change not mentioning all the poop and rotten food still left in the tank to foul the water
    I would suggest use the syphon pick up all the yak and then let the automatic water change fill the tank
    Great video thumbs up

    If I want to do say a 20% water change, how do I calculate how long I need to run the pressurized water to achieve that? As new water is added it dilutes the water in the tank and less "old" water is moved through the bulkhead but at the same time "new" water is also being drained out. One can calculate the flow by seeing how long it takes to fill a 5 gal bucket and calculate gal per minute or just trust the rating of the emitter. The question is, how many minutes to run the pressurized water for a 20% water change. I don't believe the math is as simple as 2 gal per hour, for an hour, is 10% for a 20 gal tank because once it starts filling, you are draining old and new water out of the tank at the same time, not just old water. If anyone can shed light on the math I would really appreciate it as I am contemplating a similar system.
