  • A walkthrough of my Hobie i11s inflatable kayak. I've rigged this boat to have options for many different kinds of use based on the H-Rail and H-Crate systems. Curious about how we got the rails on there? Check out our install video for the i11s H-Rail system!

    Hi, We are all looking forward to live testing (especially offshore) ! Question: what do you use to seal the screws (on cellbox or for the rudder control mounting plate) ?

    • @AmericanKayakSupply
      @AmericanKayakSupply  5 років тому

      In this case I just used some stainless self tapping screws for the mounting plate that the rudder control is on, then coated the ends of the screws with a bunch of marine goop. For the Cellblok I mounted the base plate of the blok on the mounting plate and bolted it down, also marine gooping the holes in the process. I installed some H-Rails on a customer's i11 here at the shop as well, and he ended up mounting the Cellblok on two H-Rail Mighty Mounts which turned out being a much more solid setup. If I could do mine over again, I'd probably go that route instead.

    How do feel about doing a similar set up on a i9s inflatable and then using it on rivers with both Class I & II water, maybe a little Class III. The I9s seems to be more similar in sizing and design to the other fly fishing personal fishing rafts on the market; Sea Eagle, Water Master, etc. Thanks in Advance!

    Liked. How do you mount items on the Railblaza rails? The rails are not round so it seems that you are using a particular adapter? For example, I could note tell how you could mount the Scotty on that rail.Thanks in advance for any insight.

    I was wondering if you could put an H-Bar on your inflatable? 68 year old female with 68 year old knees....It would make a world of difference for me. Also can you put the Sidekick AMA on the inflatable....just for me to feel more secure. Love fishing...live full time in 40 foot RV and fish with my sister 8 weeks a year in remote lake.... and would love the convienience of getting in the water within 10 minutes and feeling safe and secure with my 5 1/2 pound pooch.

      Hey Anne, I would imagine we can figure out a way to make it work. There are a lot of different kinds of inflatable mounts that can be used to adapt parts made for hard kayaks to fit inflatables. Shoot me an email at info@americankayaksupply.com and we can figure out what kind of parts we'd need to make the H-Bar and Sidekicks work on your inflatable!

      I've considering a couple of things - I might be able to pull off an Anchor Wizard mounted far back on the H-Rail, but that seems like a lot of weight given how much I already have on here and that it's held up by plastic. I'm also considering doing an anchor trolley by mounting a couple of the inflatable padeyes (they mount using the same glue I used for the RIBports here) to the side of the boat (one at bow, one at stern), then clipping some Harken Carbo Blocks onto them and running the trolley through that. Just haven't had the time to get around to it yet. That's about the best idea I've been able to come up with so far!

    Great video! I have a 2019 Outback. I want to install the long Hobie H-rail bars to the kayak using the gear tracks. Could I use a StarPort Minitrac to connect the H-rail to the gear tracs on the Outback? Btw, how long is that H-rail that you installed?

    • @AmericanKayakSupply
      @AmericanKayakSupply  5 років тому +1

      Thanks! I've seen a lot of folks installing H-Rail systems on the new Outbacks, but I don't think any of the ones I've seen have utilized the gear track system for mounting. The only downside of the Miniport Tracmounts is that they like to wiggle loose, so what I would do in your case is go with the Starport HD + TracMount kit. That would be much more reliable and a little more low profile/less snaggy.
      The H-Rails I used on the inflatable are the Pro Angler 12 H-Rail upgrade kit, which I then cut down to 38" (that would be too short for what you're trying to do). The 21" rails would be too short to span from the front track to the rear track on your Outback, so cutting down a pair of PA12/14 rails would probably be your best bet.
      Just let me know if you need links to any of the parts I'm referring to here!

      @@AmericanKayakSupply I took notes of the parts you mentioned and will find em here in my hometown of Houston. A concern of mine is I have the Boonedox landing gear. Will I need to get those spacers that Boonedox (H-Rail Lifter Kit) sells to lift the H-rail slightly if I go w/ the Starport Hd + TracMount kit? Finally, what did you use to cut down your H-rail? Thank u so much for your input/advice.

    • @AmericanKayakSupply
      @AmericanKayakSupply  5 років тому

      @@jimbeauxjimenez1850 valid concern on the Landing Gear. You may actually be able to squeak by without spacers since the Starports will add a little extra high to the rail clearance.
      I just cut the rail down with a hack saw, easy peasy and super clean.

    Can you stow the kayak's bag and pump on the boat with the H-Crate too? I'm hoping so; that way I can take the rig on a bus. My plan is to start at one harbor on Lake Michigan, fish my way to another harbor, and use the bus to get back where I put in.

    • @AmericanKayakSupply
      @AmericanKayakSupply  5 років тому

      Good question, Dan. The bag is pretty big , so I don't think it would fit on the boat. It would be easy to secure the pump to the deck of the boat with bungee. The only thing I can figure might work would be coming up with some kind of sherpa system like whitewater kayakers often use to carry their boats on their backs for long hike ins or portages. Basically a system of nylon straps or tie downs that create a sort of "backback". Or, even perhaps finding a pack big enough to fit the kayaks, but that is more packable.

    • @stephencooper9753
      @stephencooper9753 4 роки тому

      @@AmericanKayakSupply I have taken mine on ferries, but I usually leave the bag behind tied up when I take it out. (I take it to an island on the ferry, then walk to where I launch, and set it up, and leave the bag with pump etc in it and use a bike lock to tie a tree - low crime area, so not much risk) I also use a fold up hand trolley and put the bag on that - saves the wheels for airport use. Trolley much more durable especially over rough ground. You could bungee the bag down, it will get wet though. You almost need a bag bag! The bag it comes with is semi rigid, so maybe if you could find another storage bag and use the hand trolley, that might be an option?

    Please forgive the newbie question. I'm looking to buy an inflatable (I travel a lot), but I was looking at the I9s. With the I11, do I need to worry about getting wet? Is the i9 a good boat for bass fishing out west?

    • @AmericanKayakSupply
      @AmericanKayakSupply  5 років тому +1

      busfan01 no worries at all! Are you mostly just bass fishing ponds, lakes and rivers?
      If so it wouldn’t be any more wet of a ride than any other kayak. The seat height is the same as the i9, so you’d be plenty high up off the water. The i11s is certainly a better fishing platform and is much more stable than the i9!

      One last question. How much doe the i11 package weigh and will the bag stand up to the abuse of airline travel?

    • @AmericanKayakSupply
      @AmericanKayakSupply  5 років тому

      @@busfan01 the standard package (boat, drive, paddle, seat, etc.) is about 65 pounds.
      As far as airline travel goes, I haven't flown with mine yet but I do intend to. I believe the bag will hold up, I'm more worried about the drive and the seat that anything else. Granted, the drive and seat are both quite sturdy so they should be fine, I just might wrap them in something extra and put them in their own bag just to be safe. Still on the fence about that part.

    • @lhez

      I did travel 4 times by plane. I put the inflatable in a suitcase to reduce the size so I don’t pay extra size fees. That way you’ll probably be on weight limits depending on what suitcase you use (it has to be the bigger permitted by the airlines). Everything else (pedals, seat and paddle) goes in a separate bag. On my first trip, I used the i11s bag and wrapped it (compressing it) with nylon at the airport but it’s still a little oversize and it is a challenge to make it through. It holds up great, still like new! The i9s is for kids, it is too small and if you are tall it won’t work at all. I’ve used my ills in rivers, lakes and oceans (Florida Keys and South America), it is unbeatable. I hooked an 80 pounds tarpon at a 10 feet distance while I was standing, it is super stable.

  • @bobgomavitz1330

    Why inflatable? What are not getting from the i11 compared to....let’s say an Outback? Stability, how is it?

    • @AmericanKayakSupply
      @AmericanKayakSupply  5 років тому

      bob gomavitz I fish a lot of rivers in the PNW that have a notable number of rapids in the Class II-III range. The i11s in particular appeals to me because it has no keel, and therefore is much more responsive to my paddle strokes when I need to navigate said rapids. On top of that, it’s incredibly stable and works great as a fishing platform for calmer rivers, lakes, and ponds. I intend to try it offshore, but I’m fairly certain I’ll end up sticking to using the Outback for that most of the time.
      Generally speaking I just enjoy the i11s for it’s versatility - it’s a transforming kayak/SUP that can be modified to do almost anything I can throw at it. That doesn’t mean it’s great for everyone and everything, but it’s certainly great for certain folks!

    • @lhez
      @lhez 5 років тому

      You can take it everywhere and it hold up like any other kayak. Like WCS says it’s a fishing platform, lots of space. I own a Pro Angler 12 and I don’t miss it when using my ills. Plus it goes in my trunk!

    Also, I noticed that you installed the pan head mounting screws backwards, i.e., the nut should be on ghe bottom. not the top as shown. Also, I suggest using blue masking tape and cheap soldering brush for a neater install. Neverthelass, nice instructional video.

Would buy one immediately if there would be a color option that is not so surf guy looking but more natural like the older one. Any other color option. But bright yellow and blue is simply terribly annoying for a fishing kayak!
