  • This is a test of the old 145 gr Bow Bullet by Hoyt. Hoyt no longer makes these heads.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 20 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a perfect score of 20 + 1 Bonus Point. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 17.47 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.45" = 6.86 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.45” = 6.86 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.25" = 3.75 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 18.30 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 262 grams = 9.38/10 = 8.44 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +19 grams = 9.62/10 = 8.66 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (6/10=1.2 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 15.35 pts)
    There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (6.5" = 7.22 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score.
    ( 51 layers= 7.29 pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 15.5 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (7/10 = 3.5 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (0/10 = 0 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS:
    0 pts
TOTAL SCORE: 85.78 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
    Price: $???

John I remember these heads and also another host head that was kind of like the exodus heads, but they were huge! I think these did well and probably because they were American made steel! Great job as always! Maybe Hoyt will bring these back after seeing your test!

My buddy gave me a pack of these that belonged to his dad. I'm going to use them for my first recurve hunt. I love seeing that they held up pretty well in testing, but since they're impossible to find now; I hated watching them destroyed lol. Great job as always.

I have about 6 packs of these. If you remove the one bleeder blade, you will have a 100 grain broadhead. So, one can shoot a 145 grain or a 100 grain broadhead. My friend use to shoot these back in the early 90's and he wanted me to shoot one thru an older thicker 55- gallon barrel. I had a High Country Ultra Extreme set at 90 pounds and some 2317 aluminums. I shoot it 3 times into the barrel, and it held up really well just dulling it.

I bet a lot of deer were killed with that on the front of a 2317z

Wow, this did alot better than I thought it would. I figured it would fly like garbage. Such old technology it had to fly off,but nope.
I don't place much value in concrete ,but I do in the steel plate. It made a massive hole.onspite of it breaking after the second shot, bot holes where massive, and we don't shoot a second shot with a head on an animal without checking it fully and resharpening it.
The thickness of the razors might be as thick as any razor head made that I can recall, and I am NOT a razor head fan at all. The COC tip, also not a fan of without a Tanto edge to the tip,was thick enough to withstand a hard hit on a thick animal, even say up to an elk ? Not sure if Chuck Adams used these ? I don't recall him using them ? But curious if he did and his results are always money. I have no doubt these heads would handle just about any North American game, I would just need to see more 75 yard type flite.
Now I have seen similar heads built like this, one being the Carbon Express head which are also not made anymore. I'm not saying if made again this head would sell off the shelves. I believe today we have morphed generally to a COC 1 piece or mechanical. That's our market today. Guys who want to crash whatever is in their way opt for the COC 1 piece head afixed to a ferule and your deer guys, mostly on mechanical heads. These type of heads have mostly taken a back seat. What is left of that market, I think Magnus does as good a job with them as anyone today, warranties them, stands by them ,and is always available on social media platforms like ArcheryTalk..
Wonderful test once again John and hey, hitting perfect @ 30 yards in the X is great shooting on your part. The human error in my book makes this a 10 for accuracy. We are not shooting rifles, we are shooting bows, and it's not a 20 yard spot shot with target bow, but a standard hunting bow. If that arrow hits the green circle in my book @ 30 its a 10,human error, trigger punch, shoulder drop etc. Free hand shooting has errors.
All the best again John, thanks for the throwback.

I used these back in the 80's and when they dropped the 145gr. I switched to the 125gr. in the early '90's. Thanks for the memory jog. They were made in Taiwan.

I got some old NAP Razorbacks and Lighting 125 grams older fixed and more modern weighted sets for my brother one Christmas for cheap some going back to 1970's after finding him some at a garage sale. I thought he used some similar modern model of Thunderhead but no he used/uses G5 Montec and for small game 125 gram G5 Small game head as is more like a durable version of a judo.

Great video. I'd like to see a series where subscribers/viewers send in old classic broadheads and they are tested against similar (if available) new designs. It could be "Broadheads '82 - New What have we learned in the last 40 years" or something like that.

I had a pack before I switched to Muzzy 130 grain 4 blade.
My Hoyt Bow bullets weighed in at 165 grains.

    Thanks for the memories 😊

Now some Super Recurve designs using solid carbon fiber limbs or carbon fiber limbs with a fiberglass core most on an ILF takedown bow can get to 200 FPS or past 200 FPS.
