This has to be the greatest song ever written about our fallen servicemen. He really gets down to the depths of what the family back home goes through when they lose a loved one in war. This is purely God given talent.

Since I want to sing this song, I pulled the lyrics down from internet. Then, as I typed these words out, there was no way I could hold back the tears. I was there. I lost dear friends in 'Nam, and each time I remember thinking, "It just can't get any worse than this." But, each time, it seemed to be worse than the last. This song is the epitome of the meaning of Memorial Day! Thank you Statlers and Jimmy Fortune!

Every once in a while a song comes along that will make you realize the sacrifice made on behalf of liberty and freedom. Men and women have gave all...they are more than just a number..more than a name on a wall...I salute and remember each as individuals that had families that loves and misses them.

    The Wall
    When I see the Viet Nam Veteran Wall;
I can't help but to cry and even bawl.
    As I remember my life's pathways;
My emotions are moved from memories of yesterdays.
Then; I was young and ever so bold,
I never thought about becoming old.
I went to war at the age of nineteen years,
During that year, I grew into a man and cried many tears.
People not being in a war can't possibly understand,
What a young boy did while becoming a man?
Today; I still ask myself many times,
Why did so many of the nation's young had to die?
When I see The Wall; I stand proud and tall
For only some have been where I've been,
And only some have seen what I've seen.
Some people think I'm odd because they don’t understand,
The way I was raised and what I did while becoming a man.
I did whatever I had to do to get the job done,
Of seven men returning, I'm the last one.
During the holidays, I try to remember the good times I've had,
But, most of the time, my emotions become real sad.
Saddened by the memories of those which died,
Not really knowing the reason why.
Saddened from the guilt of returning alive,
When eighteen didn't out of twenty-five.
The seven who returned feels the blame,
Five of them came home mentally or physically lamed.
To cope with where we had been,
And try to forget what we have seen.
Some can't forget what they did.
Doing anything trying for the memories to be rid.
So, when you see a veteran which has turned to drugs or drinking
Try to see things as he does and think what he is thinking.
Try to imagine his memories, and can you feel his pain.
Can you imagine sleeping in a foot of cold mud and cold rain?
    Some have lost their usefulness,
    While others have become homeless.
Some turn to drugs, while others took their lives.
Some turn to GOD and took a godly wife.
    What was it all for?
So big businesses could keep their doors open?
Was it done to thin the population out?
Whatever it was for, the reason I have often thought about.
    `
I don’t think anyone on earth really understands,
Why things happened and why war is the nature of man.
I know one thing for sure, life is uncertain no doubt.
You can be here for one second and the next checked out.
With that thought in mind, I thank God from saving me from hell,
For giving me a godly wife, for being one of two who is home well.
You will take nothing for granted after being in war.
You will appreciate what you have much more by far.
Someday for a visit to The Wall, I will make a way to go.
Maybe I'll find the answers I need to know.
But until I do, or die, my memories will be with me,
For I know this is what God has for me in my destiny.
So, when I see the mobile Vietnam Veteran's Wall,
I'll think of all Veterans of all wars who have given their all.
May they all be blessed from God above
And receive God's grace through his love.
    Vietnam. March 1969 - March 1970

So many young men who didn't get to go home to their families. I was given the job of writing to the families of 6 of our boys who were lost. There are no words to express the feelings, the great loss. Some times there just aren't enough tears. Been to the wall saw the names of my boys. Still not enough tears. Served 12/28/67 to 6/24/70 USMC

Duk Ho was a sh_t hole. Tears and blood fell like rain. Writing from my heart. My Shannon left to be with God in Heaven. The Lord giveth, and taketh. But she took my heart. I gave so much to the service of this country. And the VA has turned its back on me and other veterans. We will take care of you no matter what. What a lie. So many gave their life's blood, or wished they had instead of locked in a mangled twisted form from which there is but one escape. No I do not pray for me, but for my Shannon and those fallen and their lives lost. God Bless their families, as they lost also, so very much. Nothing will or can ever, that is a long time. Ever bring them back. God bless, I salute you, all. Dennis. I love you Shannon.

    .. "could You tell him
He's more than a name on a wall"
.. this version with a live audience in a more intimate setting .. remember 68 Thousand DIED in a WAR that was ended in 1975 .. when if you read the "Pentagon Papers" ..the Government knew it was un-winnable in 1967 .. i was one of the draftees called in 1971 .. into a WAR that at the Time had No End in sight .. most folks of my era don't respond well to "Thank you for your Service"
.. we were not greeted well and mostly NEVER wore the uniform outside the gates .. and definitely never over seas when off duty .. the times were much different .. thank you for your time ..

I saw this when it was on tv. Jimmy Fertune didn't know Jan Howard had lost a son in vietnam. They show her a few times while he's singing. After the song someone I think Bill Anderson told him. He went over and hugged her neck. I cried the whole time he was singing this. I can remember when her son died. She had just recorded a song about him not long before he died.

Very moving song, too many young people have shed their life blood in wars in the belief to achieve peace but to no avail. Only God’s Kingdom will attain that in the near future were mankind will live in peace and wars will cease. Check Isaiah 2: 3,4 .The United Nations have failed miserably.

I had several friends who died in this useless war. My second cousin , Ford Hamilton, my classmate,Robert McGee, and my baseball buddy, Willy Berryman. What a waste of great Americans. Fantastic song.

I love this song. I'm really happy I discovered it with all this 'ed Sheeran' and lady gag on the radio. (Don't get me wrong, I adore Sheeran). But I discovered this song by 'the petersen' family band. Deffo check them out performing it, i adore it.

They dropped the end when Bill Anderson told jimmy that Jan lost her son in the war. He didn't realize that. There no dry eyes in the room everyone was real quiet during the beautiful tune.

I honestly don't know how she can stand it without crying and screaming. Maybe she had cried all the tears out. I know what it is to lose a son. Not in the senseless war, but in a car wreck. I can only imagine her pain. I'm so sorry for all the mother's and father's and brothers and sisters that lost a loved one in that war. It was so senseless. 🙏❤️
