@@henryellis154 well you can't exactly have something with about 10lbs of torque if you needed something to go through a field or you were competing in mud climbing events like people do in Land Rovers. Not only that not saying it is for Speed or performance but why are they then comparing a V8 and the TD5 and not a 2.25. Just merely stating a fact that when you are comparing things like this people do actually have a hobby and race and do things like hill climbing events in these cars.
V8 all the way. I had a TD5 disco then sold it for a V8. Miles smoother to drive as well and personally didn't think the TD5 was a well designed engine. How the injector harness was designed which let oil run through it and into the ECU was annoying.
michael ross td5 was ground breaking in its day but as you say had its bad points. It was the worst defender ever though. I had one that was well tweaked and 6months old. It drank fuel and was useless off road with all terrains on. Glad to have a 300tdi now.
you've got directional tread tyres vs non directional tyres, to do comparisons like this you've gotta keep tyres identical as a tyre is the most essential part of a vehicle to determine it's performance on the ground.
I loved my old V8. - the engine was described as "lazy". For that read - inefficient! But boy, what an engine note. I wonder what difference a decent muddy hill might have made to the performances.
david houlihan same towing capacity in both I believe. I had a td5 after a 3.5 v8 series 3 and have to say the td5 was fractionally better in fuel but not massively
+RidingWithBen Don't want to be a bitch but Moog said that he is happy anyone to use his music as long as they put links in the description and credit him for it.
epic video. would love to get a D90 or D110. do you think that your tire difference would have anything to do with it.. the V8 is running muds and the TD5 is running all terrains. cheers guys
Great video- good to see some drone footage. I went through the whole V8 vs. diesel thing, although I was trying to decide whether to go 200 or 300 Tdi or V8. Ended up going V8- my '85 Ninety originally had a 3.5 with twin carbs & a 5 speed, but it's now automatic (from a Discovery 1) and 3.9 V8i (also from a D1). The main reasons I went V8 are sound- the diesels are so noisy- and that lovely V8 burble. I went auto because the car is eventually heading to the U.S. Virgin Islands, which are pretty steep- so I'd be wearing clutches quite quickly. What is the ratio of your V8 transfer case? Mine is 1:2, which is great on the highway but not so good at lower speeds. Trying to decide whether to go 1:4 or 1:6...
+Paul K I belive it is a 1:6 ratio, but I haven't got the papers at hand from the guy who built it. I do like a low ratio and lots of toque at the wheels, compared to a higher ratio such as yours
Finnish Defense Forces uses the TD5 Defenders. They've been used and abused by us keen drivers for years and would barely be road-legal in the civilian world but they do work. They're far from a joy to drive but the keep rolling and rolling on.
Here in Africa. If you want to drive around town, and the odd occasion some dirt road, they love their V8's. If you want to drive 2500km into Mozambique or Namibia etc, td5 is the engine.
v8 just for sound plus its more a modifyable engine if thatsa word evener, ive had bowlers and lightweights v8s and the v8 is the only way. sorry eveyone maybe I am too old skool.
Fun vid. You guys should have used low range for the race however. Unless you had long stretches where you could get above 40mph for extended periods of time.
No worries. Might make for a good comparison for another time however. I still think it'd probably be quicker (having raced round a number of fields myself in Land Rovers). But to be fair, I really don't know what speeds you were getting up to on the straights.
Hi if its possible can you please tell me if you have any videos related to the Defender TD5 air conditioner installation showing all the gas pipes/bolts /compressor and indoor unit preparation please. I just bought ac kit (used) and i could not find any guidance on how to install it step by step. Thanks in advance
+Lone Woodpecker The torque is about the same, but the V8 pulls more than the TD5 in the lower revs, due to the turbo needing to spin, but around 300-310 newton meters. The V8 goes between 8-5 km/l (22-14 mpg), depends if it warm enough to drive with the windows down, and revs up (y) - Nisse
+xxxenricop I have thought of getting a LT95 gearbox, but still I do like cruising around with an automatic transmission (ZF 4-Speed). It was a fun day, and we will sure return to the same field, with new cars and improved LR's ;)

I've worked on the Defender 90 and 110 for 14yrs at Solihull building them on the production line,at least 30% of the vehicle get dispatched from the plant across the world with missing vital spot welds, death trap if they got involved in an impact,as we say at landrover the shitist 4x4 by far compared to our outside advertisement the best 4x4 by far,we laugh at our customers on how they're mugs conned on purchasing shit
Enjoyable to watch 2 blokes who love their 4x4's, putting themselves and the cars through their paces.
Going through a slightly wet, slightly muddy field at 20-30mph is not putting anything through its paces. A Peugeot 206 could do that.
Ha, ha. A Peugeot 206 eh? I'd love to see that.
Well, like I said, it's a slightly muddy, slightly wet field. I maintain that pretty much any FWD or 4WD car would make it around there with ease.

td5 has that british country vibe. v8 feels like an effort for potential buyers in florida
