You should have placed a flag every 10 meters and lap your timer each time you pass one which would allow you to find the absolute max speed and the acceleration of each warthog
I'm not saying this wouldn't have been tedious as hell, but Bungie _did_ use Blender & 3DSMax for all their modeling. It wouldn't have been unreasonable to load-in objects from different games (such as crates) with the same in-game units. 10:45 Yes it is from a developer commentary. It was in "halo devs watch a speed run", the one with Marty. They did actually give the warthog a higher maximum speed on the maw because the warthog run was built and the warthog was subsequently tweaked for balancing. They discovered they couldn't actually beat the warthog run with the newly balanced warthogs so instead of changing the map all of the warthogs on the max are slightly beefier: they have a lot more acceleration and a slightly higher top speed.

So unless it's somewhere else, that's where that comes from.
i guess its difficult to say with the infinite wathog since you have no straight aways but to me it feels like the fastest but maybe it just has the fastest acceleration.
For all the classic Halo games you could have created an empty box map that was however long you needed it to be in Blender and imported that into every Halo from CE to Reach to make sure your testing environment was the same size in every game. You could even place objects to mark 50 metre intervals. Then you could compare the max speeds for all those games to the units-per-second speed defined in the vehicle's tag to see if world units are roughly consistent between all games (pretty sure they are). If you want to include later games, rip the model of a forge object from 4 or H2A, check how big it is and use it as a measuring stick for the other maps. When he said "the real Warthog" and that it only goes 15mph, I was like "LOL, yeah that looks more game accurate than Hoonigan's but we all know Hoonigan's is WAY faster."
I feel like this would’ve been a little better/ more accurate if you reached out to mod creators for help with this, they could’ve made simple maps for ce-3 for more accurate testing, you could’ve tracked acceleration, made uniform maps so you could more accurately compare, and measured speed on inclines and declines. Then you could fairly easily recreate those maps in forge in 4/5 and reach since you can adjust and measure distances using coordinates, additionally the benefit of creating bespoke maps for testing is you could eliminate any variation in the warthogs starting position by aligning it with the stop point so all you have to do is get in the warthog and drive straight potentially using Keyboard and mouse to avoid stick drift. And if you really wanted to take it to the next level you could design an area in line with the track to observe from so you could lay the clips next to each other so we could’ve actually seen what it looks like side by side as if they were racing

We actually got pretty good at it too to the point that the tracks looked like irl tracks for the most part. There was also other leagues like rally with the warthogs, and motocross ect. We really had everything going on for a bit.
halo 2 did have a book included with the physical OG halo 2 that held some information on vehicles, it may have some distance or speed measurements in there.
Great video-but to get around the acceleration problem, just add some track before a start line that you use to speed up, and then measure the time between the start and finish line when the hog is only going at maximum speed. Cheers!
This wouldn't take into account differences in scale. If they modelled Noble 6 using the same character height as chief, then Halo Reach distances would be too high if N6's height was lore wise lower.
Theory about the Halo 3: ODST speed. They scaled a lot of things down for ODST, including the player model, so it would make sense that the player's speed may have also seen a slight decrease. It would also make sense if vehicle speeds around the board were also decreased, especially if the vehicle speed is a variable dependent on player speed. No evidence, just a thought.
Another issue with just doing “300 meters” or so in each game is that every game is a little different so 300 meters in one game might be more or less. You could have done pixels, since they’re all consistent no matter what.
Could you use a Spartans dead body to calculate distance because it's the same model as cheif and we know his height is 7 ft tall maybe you could figure it out?
yeah, those top speeds are about right for a military vehicle, the M998 HMMWV (Humvee) has a top speed of around 65-70 ish. the newer variants are actually slower than the M998 because they have all that add on armor or (theoretical) extra loading capacity, despite having more power on paper.
@@TuSoKa67 that's what I mean, the newer ones are heavier, even though they have a higher power output on paper, they have a lower top speed. plus they are abused horribly by the human potatoes who work the motor pools. I mean, they make it work, but I've seen beer cans used to patch hoses and pipes.
For the Halo games that have PC modding tools it may be worth it now to try to build mods to help you with this sort of thing. In particular you could have built a very precise map for your tests, maybe even have scripts to time the runs.
Bro could've made it easier by using a oval track on 3 and such lmao. The top speed in reach is like 124 I think. I know the mongoose is 95 mph, but it depends the angle of ur stick if u actually hit it or not. Edit* just checked in my big oval track and yes, the max speed for the warthog on halo reach is 124.
In halo 2 one way you can measure distance is by your spartan step size. If you know about he height of a spartan you can easily calculate the step size. Then just take that many steps. A little tedious but it would work
Yeah, I will let you off the hook for Halo Wars, the hog's speed varies so much in it that it cannot be reliable, especially with the bash ability. (however, from experience, I do know that the upgrades for the hogs do not affect speed in HW1, IDK about HW2)
Before you start, the most precise way to do this is calculate how many pixels are in a singular yard or foot, then measure how many pixels forward the thing moves per second at top speed, divide the thing by the other thing and you get how fast they go or whatever
Was playing mcc multilayer yesterday. Noticed that a majority of people play the custom games instead of classic games. Also got stuck in a game with a guy using cheats and 2 team mates who kept team killing, the host took ages to ban him.
i feel like it wouldve been more work but you shouldve tested it uphill downhill and level because normally youre never on a flat surface driving a warthog in halo
Could potentially use 2A's Hog as reference point for 2's Hog. 2A's Hog = 4's Hog in Multiplayer, but I'm pretty certain that 2A's Hog = 2's Hog in Campaign. Check the in game units against the speed of the 2A MP's Hog and then compare to the in game units of the 2A Campaign's Hog and get a speed measurement from that, and you'd have a speed for 2's Hog. Could be completely wrong but having switched between graphics on campaign the distance/speed of the warthog feels no different between each version

You could of just used a custom mod map for Halo CE, 2, 3 and ODST to more easily test the speed
You probably could have gotten hel from inferno plus and modded the same map into every game and just race footage side by side
This wouldn't take into account differences in scale. If they modelled Noble 6 using the same character height as chief, then Halo Reach distances would be too high if N6's height was lore wise lower.
This is the content I subscribe for
actually surprisingly thorough, you don't usually get that from the halo crowd, I like it.
At first sight I’m like how tf you make a 23 min video just to answer which is the fastest lol
I've found that in Speed Halo, if you reverse and go backwards you go even faster. Maybe something to do with negative acceleration.
Someone did a fan made a street legal warthog that goes I think 70 or 80!!
what about the speed for the Warthog that was in Halo: Forward Unto Dawn movie they drove?
Crazy bc I was thinking about when you guys would do this the other day thank yall 🤣

Man, just so many variables to consider from all games. Just to get to the simple goal of how fast they go.
Another issue with just doing “300 meters” or so in each game is that every game is a little different so 300 meters in one game might be more or less.
You could have done pixels, since they’re all consistent no matter what.
On the GarishGoblin speed run the Bungie developers confirmed they made it faster.
Could you use a Spartans dead body to calculate distance because it's the same model as cheif and we know his height is 7 ft tall maybe you could figure it out?

Will you guys be doing campaign challenge runs on halo infinite when co op comes out?
yeah, those top speeds are about right for a military vehicle, the M998 HMMWV (Humvee) has a top speed of around 65-70 ish. the newer variants are actually slower than the M998 because they have all that add on armor or (theoretical) extra loading capacity, despite having more power on paper.
I've driven a 1097, soft top, on a Korean highway during the night with no traffic. Speedometer wouldn't get past 60
Is that a remix Blue Monday I hear in the background music? Which one is it?
For the Halo games that have PC modding tools it may be worth it now to try to build mods to help you with this sort of thing. In particular you could have built a very precise map for your tests, maybe even have scripts to time the runs.
Everytime that dot lines up on someone's head my sniper instincts are itching to pull that trigger so bad!
The average speed of a Warthot between fastest and slowest would 65.5/mph.
For Halo 2, you could just make a custom map (using mod tools) that's really long and nnot modify anything else

A little tedious but it would work
Ah, I know stride length, I believe Game Theory once tried to use this to measure the distance of something with that method before
Can’t believe it isn’t halo ce’s
No I mean it, i genuinely can’t
Finally, a creator that calculates in the correct measurements first.
10:43 they had to make the warthog faster due to the regular worthog not being able to make the jumps, back up by commentaries and stats in the files
You missed that other Reach warthog variant with no turret.
Edit : And no, I don’t refer to the Forklift 😒 …
Forgot the H5 ONI Hog and Vespin Rocket hog.
Yeah, I will let you off the hook for Halo Wars, the hog's speed varies so much in it that it cannot be reliable, especially with the bash ability. (however, from experience, I do know that the upgrades for the hogs do not affect speed in HW1, IDK about HW2)
Now time to do the ghosts

Before you start, the most precise way to do this is calculate how many pixels are in a singular yard or foot, then measure how many pixels forward the thing moves per second at top speed, divide the thing by the other thing and you get how fast they go or whatever
Finally math being helpful
Was playing mcc multilayer yesterday. Noticed that a majority of people play the custom games instead of classic games. Also got stuck in a game with a guy using cheats and 2 team mates who kept team killing, the host took ages to ban him.
Okay, very informative video, but god that choppy framerate in some of these clips is giving me a headache trying to watch.

i feel like it wouldve been more work but you shouldve tested it uphill downhill and level because normally youre never on a flat surface driving a warthog in halo
Yes, I HAVE wondered. Thank you for this lol.
My guess right off the rip is going to be Infinite's, aside from 5's rally hog.
It would be neat to test other things like other vehicle speeds and player speed when walking vs sprinting
I know halo 5 has a lot of different warthogs but one I did want to see was the oni warthog it was that sexy black came with a way better turret and was up armored

Here’s the fastest version of the Warthog, the M12S from the Forza Horizon series.
