Halo CE's Maw Warthog isn't faster, but has a lower mass value, which in game physics; allows it to accelerate uphill more easily; allowing it to clear the jump.
I'd always felt more floaty in the Maw Hog
I fucking love the way Halo CE hogs felt. The suspension was amazing for the time
In the developers react to speed runs video they said it was faster
@@PunaheleHoku I mean, that was years after they made the game, it’s totally possible they misremembered in the moment.
@@barmacidic2257 how is that more likely then them being correct?
In Halo 2, there is actually a distance marker. If you're taking too long to complete a mission and the game thinks you're lost, a waypoint eventually appears
Halo 3 has them too
There are also various patch notes which mark the default radar range of various game modes.
And I'm about 90% you can just set radar range in custom game modes, I think it gives the precise measurements; and some random loading blurb, I thought the game box insert said something but I just checked and the only measurement is the size of the ring.
1st person view while in the Warthog passenger seat is so much cooler to me than the 3rd person view you get in every other halo game
I feel like it should be an option whether or not you can be in 3rd or 1st
I wish you could actually drive Halo vehicles in first person along with proper controls (independent driving and camera control). The camera controls always annoyed me in Halo, like I can't look behind me in the Warthog without the stupid thing trying to go that way!
@@scottthewaterwarrior ikr
@@scottthewaterwarrior Seeing as I cannot play Battlefront and pilot fighter ships without it being in 1st person, I agree. I would play a lot better in 1st Person.
Hey.
I appreciate that you pointed out that your standardized measurements are a little bit flawed, and then explained why. When weirdness happens, you explain it in detail. When you switch metrics, you explain it in detail.
This is straight up scientific, and WHEN different mods come out for longer forge 'roadways', this will still be very useful data.
I feel almost silly for pointing this out, because y'all have pretty much always been honest professionals. Good on you guys! Keep going!

American sees metric system used
"Dis is science guiz!!!"
@@Ethiixx I mean.. most game analyses stack the character on top of themselves hundreds of times and use that as a metric. Some just measure distance in 'units' which is an entirely meaningless term. How would you reconcile vehicle speed when distance is overestimated and in-game days are sped up to be like 10 minutes? Add in the acceleration curve and you have quite a few calculations to do. How would you compare that to another game where time literally stands still while you go through levels? This kinda stuff is not an easy task, so you gotta use whatever standard of measurement is available. Here, it happens to be the metric system. In other situations it might be Mario's height or the radius of explosive damage. Working with the tools at hand to experiment and literally figure out facts is scientific. Really doesn't matter how you measure things, as long as it's consistent and convenient for calculations
Be nice. Americans are not unscientific. The vast majority of us hate the imperial measurement system.
bro wrote an entire essay 💀
@@KeatonPlaysGames yeah it's because he put in a ton of effort to make this video. Why is being invested in something and generally 'giving a damn' seen as ridiculous to you?
I liked this. It was good. I'm impressed. I'm sharing that feeling. Leave me alone. There's no wrong way to enjoy this kind of content
Also, it's 6 sentences. You're super cool for trying to make me out to be a nerd... on a video game youtube channel.
For some reason, due to game physics, Halo CE always felt the fastest..
apparently im not alone
Might have to do with the low friction. Feels like you've accelerated to a quite a high speed and have to break a lot to stop
Also, feels like the CE warthog has the best handling in the entire series...
It always feels like you're sliding on ice on CE for some reason. Like, I've heard of powersliding but this bad boy is straight up powerslipping at that point
@@Fr0stbite1801 yeah, as long as you were on a slight slope and your wheels started to rotate, you'd suddenly lose almost all friction. And by gently pulsing accelerator on and off uphill you could actually slide downhill.
The warthog on The Maw has a slightly tweaked physics profile compared to the other warthogs in the game, specifically for the jump the warthog has to do. It is not speed that is changed, but more to do with its in-air behavior. It is a small tweak, and I'm sure only noticed because of Halo Custom Edition, but a change that really shows Bungie's "Rule of Cool" mentality.
ive always known something was weird with the maws warthogs
namely because im always crashing the damn things lmao
It decrease its weight in the physics engine
You should have placed a flag every 10 meters and lap your timer each time you pass one which would allow you to find the absolute max speed and the acceleration of each warthog
Hey dude, make sure to report the scammer in your replies
@@JamesTDG they ran off
I'm not saying this wouldn't have been tedious as hell, but Bungie _did_ use Blender & 3DSMax for all their modeling. It wouldn't have been unreasonable to load-in objects from different games (such as crates) with the same in-game units. Even if a 'Halo 2 unit' is bigger than a 'Halo 3 unit', you'd be able to get a conversion by comparing their sizes in Blender.
If you have the conversions, you can suddenly use the in-game units.

Yes it is from a developer commentary. It was in "halo devs watch a speed run", the one with Marty. They did actually give the warthog a higher maximum speed on the maw because the warthog run was built and the warthog was subsequently tweaked for balancing. They discovered they couldn't actually beat the warthog run with the newly balanced warthogs so instead of changing the map all of the warthogs on the max are slightly beefier: they have a lot more acceleration and a slightly higher top speed.
*maw
10:19 The warthog had another speed through development. It could not make the jump so they changed it through the whole game just for this Mission
Yup, its not a rumor. It was confirmed by the devs in an IGN dev commentary while watching a speedrun.
well yes but no, what they really did was increase the horsepower so the jump wont slow it down but max speed is the same.
They changed the campaign warthog in all halo missions but didnt change the multiplayer one
It isn't through the whole game as both variants are present. one variant is used in The Maw and the faster variant is in multiplayer. I am not sure which version the other campaign missions use.
Imagine being too fast to make a jump like that
Master chiefs height should be consistent against all the main games you could use that as a vertical distance and then compare it to the size of a warthog
It’s not
@@robertogonzalez1907 isn’t that the only comparison that maters tho? Because that’s how we view the game.
This was awesome! Mongoose next?! Also, You forgot to mention the Hoonigan Warthog built during the release for Halo Infinite. It's 1,000 Horsepower and they said in a video it was built to go over 100 mph. 👀
In the developer commentary of the speedrun--when those were really super popular--they actually state that they had to slightly boost the Maw warthog because the speed of the regular warthog wasn't fast enough to clear areas of the trench run. So unless it's somewhere else, that's where that comes from.
I never imagined I’d watch a 23 minute video on the speed of Warthogs in Halo…
No regrets.
i guess its difficult to say with the infinite wathog since you have no straight aways but to me it feels like the fastest but maybe it just has the fastest acceleration.
For all the classic Halo games you could have created an empty box map that was however long you needed it to be in Blender and imported that into every Halo from CE to Reach to make sure your testing environment was the same size in every game. You could even place objects to mark 50 metre intervals. Then you could compare the max speeds for all those games to the units-per-second speed defined in the vehicle's tag to see if world units are roughly consistent between all games (pretty sure they are). If you want to include later games, rip the model of a forge object from 4 or H2A, check how big it is and use it as a measuring stick for the other maps. Pretty sure the grid plane object in those is the same as Reach too.
The amount of math involved, not only you finding out how fast the pumas are. You just indirectly taught us how to calculate speed and convert it from KPH to MPH. Good stuff Rocket sloth 👏🏾
the halo infinite warthog just seems a lot faster than the others like it's uncontrollable. I believe this is a combination of a really fast and gentle acceleration curve and vehicles being weightless
bungie has already confirmed in an interview that the first warthog on the right in the maw is tweaked to be faster than any other hog in the game. Although I don't remember if they said it had a higher top speed or higher acceleration or a mix of both
You guys forgot about the real life warthog that Microsoft paid Hoonigan to build with a v8 turbo charged LS engine that has over 1000 horsepower
Next time my Physics students ask "when am I ever going to have to worry about unit conversions in real life?" I'm showing them this video.
You Won Hit Me Up🎁🎁🎉🎉.......
A bit off topic there but I find it funny how the Hog's headlights reflect on the floor, even though it's behind a wall at 19:27 ^^
Anyways, thanks for the video guys, take care
You're the only other person I've seen so far using the Big Sur coating for your Spartan/Sidekick. Always nice to see someone who shares the same taste. Also, nice work on the testing.
21:48... Not to *Pushes up glasses* Ummmm actually you, but the real worthog commissioned by Microsoft from Hoonigan uses the same 1400hp powertrain as the Hoonicorn (Do yourself a favor and look that beast up if youre unfamiliar) which has a top speed of ~250MPH. Now theres a lot more weight on that car then the Hoonicron, and they have it running at less power (1000hp), I bet it would be up there for the top speed contenders. Also if anyone is interested, they have a whole series on building it. Was super dope to watch.

Everytime that dot lines up on someone's head my sniper instincts are itching to pull that trigger so bad!
I feel like this would’ve been a little better/ more accurate if you reached out to mod creators for help with this, they could’ve made simple maps for ce-3 for more accurate testing, you could’ve tracked acceleration, made uniform maps so you could more accurately compare, and measured speed on inclines and declines. Then you could fairly easily recreate those maps in forge in 4/5 and reach since you can adjust and measure distances using coordinates, additionally the benefit of creating bespoke maps for testing is you could eliminate any variation in the warthogs starting position by aligning it with the stop point so all you have to do is get in the warthog and drive straight potentially using Keyboard and mouse to avoid stick drift. And if you really wanted to take it to the next level you could design an area in line with the track to observe from so you could lay the clips next to each other so we could’ve actually seen what it looks like side by side as if they were racing
Maybe you can measure length in Halo 2 based on the Master Chief's height?
Using height and pixel measurements will be too painful to do, use stride length
You can make M/S to Km/h multiplicand ×3.6 because 1 km is 1000 meters and 1 hour is 3600 seconds so you can make it easier multiply for 3.6
You Won Hit Me Up🎁🎁🎉🎉..
Could you use a Spartans dead body to calculate distance because it's the same model as cheif and we know his height is 7 ft tall maybe you could figure it out?
You Won Hit Me Up To Get Your Prizes 🎁🎁🎉..........
22:24 If you hold down the handbrake/drift button, whatever you want to call it, it'll accelerate faster and reach an even higher top speed
That sounds like an exploit
Man, just so many variables to consider from all games. Just to get to the simple goal of how fast they go.
Halo Infinite’s campaign has some good straightaways all over.
You Won Hit Me Up🎁🎁🎉🎉..
Let's not forget the insane Warthog that Hoonigan made. I suspect that'll be at the top of the list.
When he said "the real Warthog" and that it only goes 15mph, I was like "LOL, yeah that looks more game accurate than Hoonigan's but we all know Hoonigan's is WAY faster."
WARTHOG GO BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Yes it does
Why did the halo1 warthog sound effect play in my head?? 😅😭
Usually BRRRRR elicits the sound of a buzzing minigun in my brain. Why and HOW did it automatically 'translate' this onomatopoeia!?
To be fair, the Halo CE Hod go brt brt Brt Brt BRt BRt BRTBRTBRTBRTBRTBRT
Warthog's difference:
Real life: a plane
Halo:a truck
Warthog's similarities
Brrrrrrrrrrt!
You probably could have gotten hel from inferno plus and modded the same map into every game and just race footage side by side
yeah the speed halo map!
also the maw hogs i believe were edited in some way to make the gap drop possible due to the normal hogs kept bonking the giant steel bar on the way causing a guaranteed death
I always thought ODST had one of the faster warthogs but it turns out it only feels faster because the camera is zoomed out a bit.
This is a great idea. You guys are gonna have to test every vehicle now!
You Won Hit Me Up🎁🎁🎉🎉.......
Is that a remix Blue Monday I hear in the background music? Which one is it?
watching them doing this live was so interesting
That guy made a warthog accelerator like a true made scientist.
Crazy bc I was thinking about when you guys would do this the other day thank yall 🤣
You Won Hit Me Up To Get Your Prizes 🎁🎁🎉..........
You guys test everything and I love it
actually surprisingly thorough, you don't usually get that from the halo crowd, I like it.
This wouldn't take into account differences in scale. If they modelled Noble 6 using the same character height as chief, then Halo Reach distances would be too high if N6's height was lore wise lower.
HOW did I not know that there's Warthog rally racing in the Halo universe? that's awesome!
You Won Hit Me Up🎁🎁🎉🎉..
Bro me and my friends for years used to race in a nascar style league with mongooses. Halo really used to be for everything. Reach had the best physics so that's where we stuck to, and with modded maps with insane budgets we could build like full sized tracks for the mongeese. We actually got pretty good at it too to the point that the tracks looked like irl tracks for the most part. There was also other leagues like rally with the warthogs, and motocross ect. We really had everything going on for a bit.
The quality content i needed for today
*Gets backed over by warthog on the Maw*
It would be neat to test other things like other vehicle speeds and player speed when walking vs sprinting
343 should really consider adding a forge mode for all the games that dont already have it. It'd be really cool to see custom halo ce maps and stuff
You Won Hit Me Up To Get Your Prizes 🎁🎁🎉..........
They can't even add forge to infinite
343 deosn't give a shit about what's cool and fun though
Well, mod tools is just forge on crack my dude. Just look at Cursed Halo for example
Man, so many people missed out on Halo: Custom Edition.
Before you start, the most precise way to do this is calculate how many pixels are in a singular yard or foot, then measure how many pixels forward the thing moves per second at top speed, divide the thing by the other thing and you get how fast they go or whatever
Take a shot of water every time they say warthog in this video. You’ll be very hydrated :)
stupid question but did you try the halo 2 windows vista map editor to try getting the speeds for halo 2?
Dude, if you're going to mention a real world Warthog, do NOT forget the Hoonigan Warthog! That thing is a beast!
16:16 if you wait long enough a distance meter on an icon would show up on the bridge.
You Won Hit Me Up To Get Your Prizes 🎁🎁🎉..........
Dang... and I thought my fictional vehicle having a top speed of 195km/h was actually kinda slow in the grand scheme of things.
You Won Hit Me Up🎁🎁🎉🎉.......
blue monday remix in the background took my attention i couldn't focus on anything you were saying lol
The game were the warthog does not flip when you drive over a rock.
Here's an idea for Halo 2. MC's suit has a Canon height. Kill your buddies for 300 meters
You could of just used a custom mod map for Halo CE, 2, 3 and ODST to more easily test the speed
Was that song during the talk about how speeds are measured Blue Monday?
Another weird way you could measure distance is with elite corpses. I think in the instruction manual for the older games it states that elites are almost 9 feet tall. Just stack up dead elite bodies next time lol
halo 2 did have a book included with the physical OG halo 2 that held some information on vehicles, it may have some distance or speed measurements in there.
If you wait for adew minutes at the start of the city mission where you destroy the scarab in halo 2 a nav point will appear.
The Nav point ends once you ear the bridge, you can use that to measure the warthogs distance.
It is funny that the warthog is as fast as or slightly faster than a HUMVEE.
For Halo 2, you could just make a custom map (using mod tools) that's really long and nnot modify anything else
You Won Hit Me Up🎁🎁🎉🎉..
The halo Wars warthog 💀
The blue monday was a nice touch
Another way to test speed is to measure the self-body length it can clear within fix time, you can try that next time. It is useful when you don't have a universal comparison. So like "How many warthogs can it run through in 10sec."
Anyone else hear Austin from Game Theory yelling "PIXEL MEASUREMENTS!!!"?
yeah, those top speeds are about right for a military vehicle, the M998 HMMWV (Humvee) has a top speed of around 65-70 ish. the newer variants are actually slower than the M998 because they have all that add on armor or (theoretical) extra loading capacity, despite having more power on paper.
I've driven a 1097, soft top, on a Korean highway during the night with no traffic. Speedometer wouldn't get past 60
@@TuSoKa67 that's what I mean, the newer ones are heavier, even though they have a higher power output on paper, they have a lower top speed. plus they are abused horribly by the human potatoes who work the motor pools. I mean, they make it work, but I've seen beer cans used to patch hoses and pipes.
You could use the height of a dead spartan to measure distance
Will you guys be doing campaign challenge runs on halo infinite when co op comes out?
oh boy, love the stuttery footage.
Tell you one thing, the Warthog Run in Halo 3 feels the most epic regardless of speed.
I never thought I wanted to know this so badly before I saw the title. 🙏
I've found that in Speed Halo, if you reverse and go backwards you go even faster. Maybe something to do with negative acceleration.
This is the content I subscribe for
Never wondered that
But now I HAVE to know
Great video-but to get around the acceleration problem, just add some track before a start line that you use to speed up, and then measure the time between the start and finish line when the hog is only going at maximum speed. Cheers!
Bro said "spartans dont just have a tape measure" but the radar clearly says 25m radius
I was totally just saying "what about acceleration" in my head and then they mentioned it.
Use a similar measurement system to halo 3 on all games, to give us a solid list based on this:
Its understood the warthog is different sizes a little bit, but the scaling is all different anyway. Find the spot in your straight away where you are at top speed, place spartan, then count 10-15 car lengths forward, measure& compare the times. You can use your initial data table to scale these results to a new estimated mph for halo 2
Also creative ways in measuring each speed.
You Won Hit Me Up🎁🎁🎉🎉.......
10:47 saw dev commentary over a ce speed run, one of them talked about how he had to tweak the maw warthog bc the normal ce one couldn’t make it
In halo 2 one way you can measure distance is by your spartan step size. If you know about he height of a spartan you can easily calculate the step size. Then just take that many steps. A little tedious but it would work
Ah, I know stride length, I believe Game Theory once tried to use this to measure the distance of something with that method before
That's about the top speed of my monte carlo lol
I know halo 5 has a lot of different warthogs but one I did want to see was the oni warthog it was that sexy black came with a way better turret and was up armored
You Won Hit Me Up To Get Your Prizes 🎁🎁🎉..........
W video and W music when's the next album Elijah?
For the Halo games that have PC modding tools it may be worth it now to try to build mods to help you with this sort of thing. In particular you could have built a very precise map for your tests, maybe even have scripts to time the runs.
10:43 they had to make the warthog faster due to the regular worthog not being able to make the jumps, back up by commentaries and stats in the files
I bet Vadam could shed some light on the unit scaling across games. The Forza Warthogs have different handling properties across games too. They made it faster in FH4, but I'm not sure about 5. The Landfall prop Warthog has been replaced by the new one made by Hoonigan, which is a very real car with a very large engine. I can't find any exact figures, though
You Won Hit Me Up To Get Your Prizes 🎁🎁🎉..........
I would like to see this same test for other halo vehicles too, like the Scorpion!
Thought I’m pretty sure it’s the Halo Reach Scorpion right off the bat, that’s the only Scorpion I’ve ever splattered other players while driving lol
Was playing mcc multilayer yesterday. Noticed that a majority of people play the custom games instead of classic games. Also got stuck in a game with a guy using cheats and 2 team mates who kept team killing, the host took ages to ban him.
Someone did a fan made a street legal warthog that goes I think 70 or 80!!
Did anyone else feel an increase in speed on the warthog on coastal highway in ODST?
You guys ever thought about doing Halo 5 LASO? Just to say you have all the mainline halo LASO games under your belt.
You could have done 2 equations for each warthog run. The more correct velocity formula that accounts for acceleration is:
(Final velocity plus initial velocity)/2 = (final position minus initial position)/time.
You would have every variable besides the final velocity, but it would be an average from 0 to the max. This in conjunction with the acceleration formula a = (vf - vi)/t, you could isolate any 5s interval that youre still accelerating (as it should be linear) and combine the two equations. In that 5s interval, you'll again have all the variables besides the vfinal for the first equation which you can find and then use for the acceleration.
Now having the acceleration, you can find the exact max velocity by combining the two equations into vf^2 =2(displacement x acceleration) + vi^2.
(This is done by isolating the time variable in each equation; t = (vf - vi)/a and t = 2(displacement)/(vf + vi). t = t, (vf - vi)/a = 2(displacement)/(vf - vi)).
Could potentially use 2A's Hog as reference point for 2's Hog. 2A's Hog = 4's Hog in Multiplayer, but I'm pretty certain that 2A's Hog = 2's Hog in Campaign. Check the in game units against the speed of the 2A MP's Hog and then compare to the in game units of the 2A Campaign's Hog and get a speed measurement from that, and you'd have a speed for 2's Hog. Could be completely wrong but having switched between graphics on campaign the distance/speed of the warthog feels no different between each version
Your testing methodology also assumes that a halo “meter” is an actual meter rather than some amount of in game units, and that what each game calls a “meter” is the same exact distance in all halo games.
I love this channel
