You're correct that these are great vehicles. Mine has 312k and still going strong. Only thing was I had to change the timing chain at 294k. Best car I've ever owned. Absolutely trouble-free. Also no squeeks/rattles in the interior. The extra cheap old-GM dash plastic is tight as a drum LOL 😆. I know everyone hates GM but that's all my family has had for many years. Cannot think of any significant repairs being done to any of them.

I owned a 2008 HHR, and it was the easiest car to work on I've ever owned. It was practical, got, great gas mileage and the 4cyl. Engine had plenty of power. I got t-boned at an intersection and it was totaled, but, it still started and ran even though it was bent in half. Great car and I'm still looking for another one.

I thought this was going to be a complaint-fest, I'm glad to see the positive comments. Bought my '08 with 80k, now it's got 144k. Needed a water pump my first year, covered by used car warranty, then after 100k got front rotors. That's it. I've had a washer in the back, a dryer, and of course tools, then I can pop the leather seats back up and enjoy a nice car. Don't plan on selling it.

I bought mine with 80k on it back in 2012. I've drove across Canada almost I have about 284k on it now. My new mechanic complimented me on how great of shape it's in. It still runs like a dream. I love it for camping I put the seats down and made a bed that fits perfectly. Plus I bought one of those tents that wrap around the back of the car. I don't ever want it to die LOL

I bought an 07 in February of 2022 with 86,000 miles on it. Searched high and low for one of these cars. All I've needed thus far was a new fuel tank the week I bought it and a new catalytic converter 8 months ago. Pipe split and was getting very loud. Luckily the fuel tank was covered under the used car warranty. I paid cash for the converter. Outside of oil changes and a new set of tires this spring, this car has been a trooper. 2.4 has plenty of power and does good on gas. And the AC performance is the best R134a system I've experienced. Other cars do get cold but this car is damn near instant cold even on 110° days, really reminds me of old R12 systems. I'm surprised the capacity is less than one pound of refrigerant. Overall this car is fun to drive, the 260 watt sound system thumps, I use it to haul stuff around on occasion which is nice, and its quite roomy for my friends and family when needed. Probably the only 2 issues I have with the car itself is not having an Overdrive lockout. I don't like how using the "I" position with the transmission hangs the gears at higher RPM before upshifting when I only need to downshift one gear, and the single note horn. I'm looking into seeing if horns from a Malibu will work to get a louder 2 note horn. I plan to keep this car a while so I'm glad to see so many owners getting a high amount of miles out of theirs.

I'm not sure you could consider the HHR having a second gen version, most changes were incremental over the years. Mostly colors offered and safety and powertrain features being added. 09' probably being the most with E85 Flex-Fuel on all engines 2.2 and 2.4, plus Variable Valve Timing on both engines that year. Along with changing window controls from center console to door armrest. Interior and exterior looked identical for the 6 year run. Thanks for the tips, I've had the solenoid check engine light on once, but never came back; now I have O2 light on, bad sensor it seems.. Not hard to reach from what I've seen. Thanks.

Dec 2021 bought an 09 2LT with 25,900mi $9,850. Flew from Charlotte to Seattle to get it. Drove down the Pacific coast to LA then east. The sport suspension handled curves and twists nicely. Check engine light came on a couple times, for an hour or two. An auto parts store said the code related to the VVT, but would Check further when he wasn't swamped. As the car was running fine, the light intermittent, the oil and temperature all normal I continued home. As the dealer has failed to send the necessary paperwork for the DMV, until 21 days after the purchase, I haven't been able to buy a plate to legally drive it to a dealer for services I likely need, like the coolant and transmission flushed, sparkplugs replaced, etc. Good video and informative comments, thanks

@limabean13 make sure it is the Flex fuel version. That's 2009 and later. It will have a yellow gas cap and it should say it on the tail gate. Flex fuel is E85. It is usually cheaper than 87 octane. You may lose 20% of your gas mileage but it's not noticeable. It burns cleaner, it cleans as you use it, and it may also boost your engine power output and it also burns cooler. That means your internal parts are cooler. When everyone was paying $4.00/gallon for gas, I was paying $2.60-$2.80/gallon for E85.

    1. Not on manifold. Should know. Just did TUNE UP. Changed all spark plugs and coils. (2 hoses, 1 air intake sensor and "hood" cover - PULL HARD!) Also checked air filter!
    2. Throttle Body? Don't recall seeing, but might be there. AW! Will check later.
    3. Coolant System: 150,000 miles?! OR every 5 years? Not yet due, save for the latter. Will DO! (Heater core or radiator plugged. Got it.)
    4. Gas Cap √
    5. POWER STEERING: Get that warning light every now and then. Have to turn off and restart to resolve. IDK! HHRs seem to have lots of electronic problems.
    2007 model.
Otherwise been pretty good to me. Bought as demo / program car . 13k miles. First week, solenoid inside automatic shifter went out. Would not engage OR move!
    THANKS! Great Info.

Got my 2006 two years ago at 90K miles. She’s a dream. However, like other commenters, I’ve recently had problems that aren’t in the video. Ouch. They are:
Two weeks after last oil change, check oil light came on. I watched a couple vids on it but so far 🤷🏻‍♀️
Both passenger and driver floors flooded and soaked from rain, literally two days ago. That’s going to be a nightmare in labor costs 🙆🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

On mine, I got an error with the check engine light. 2011. They diagnosed an issue with the transmission and wanted $4700, they said they do not open them up to repair them, they just put a new one in. I cleared the error. Not worth the $4700, so I will drive it until it dies. I have always done the rest of my maintenance. Oil changes, etc., never miss they always on time. Whatever the issue is, occasionally it starts off from a stop a little sluggish. I let go of the gas, and push it again and that usually fixes it. Another place said it was the throttle body and they cleaned it out for $180, but the issue never went away, so it wasn't that. All in all, I love mine.

My friend just brought hers by my house to check an oil leak. I'm fearing its the crankshaft seal. I just changed out the thermostat as it was stuck open throwing a code and disabling the air conditioning. And we're going to have record highs of possibly 113° next weekend. Also need to replace the upstream O2 sensor but I couldn't break the threads loose. Was looking around for help with that when tonight she noticed oil leaking and a little smoke from under the hood. Car has over 221,000 miles on it and its been driven hard. So I can't really fault the car. Just age and miles. I wouldn't mind having one myself. The 2.4L with the manual transmission would be nice. Or an SS.

This is a question I just purchased a 2011 HHR from a reputable used dealer with an excellent inspection report everything works motor and automatic transmission excellent no issues except one..occasionally when sitting in traffic the idle will drop for a couple of seconds simultaneously the air fan will lose power, it’s just circulating air not the heater or AC then quickly returns to normal it’s only happened a couple of times but since Ive only had the vehicle for a week I’m on the look out for potential issues that could hamper a long road trip, when I first drove it home I used the AC and there were no noticeable issues I haven’t owned a vehicle for a long time so am hoping for some experienced insight on what to watch for or consider

The other one is " service traction " I'm guessing that has something to do with my anti skid because it goes off all the time. I can hardly use my breaks at all in winter. Gearing down a half block before intersection. Also it gets stuck in an inch of snow even with studded tires. What is wrong with my car ?

It's worth adding lower control arm bushings, TCM/BCM ground (on early models) and fuel line corrosion (in humid climates) to the list of issues. All are repairable and not necessarily dealbreakers but do get misdiagnosed by some shops

I have a 2007 HHR LT I paid $300 for my power steering replacement part at the dealership. My engine light is on. I was told it was bc I replaced my gas cap with a non-original "key gas cap.5⁴... It also, stopped me from remote cranking.... I ve tried to find a replacement gas cap that would allow me to remote crank again... Question: Do the original gas cap prevent anyone from siphoning and/or opening the gas cap/panel door? I was curious because I use to stay in an area where little children would do things to your car...ijs

I've had mine for 5 years, an 07. I've had one major repair replacing the timing chain guide. The alternator and starter have also been replaced. For the life of me, as well as my mechanic, is it throws up a misfire code at random, when there seems to be no misfire. I replaced all spark plugs and whatever ignition coil the musfire was related to, and it still will just randomly throw up the code and a light when it feels like it. It seems to drive fine, just a quirky car I guess.

My girlfriends 2009 HHR has a loud clicking noise in the engine. It gets louder every time you accelerate. I’m not sure what it was. When we got it we replaced the EVAP solenoid bc it was bad and the gas cap because it threw codes and no codes since. Maybe you would have some insight of what it is?

Can you please help me ? My 2010 HHR is having a problem with the ESC system. I replaced both control arms and front brake pads recently. The control arms were needing to be replaced but couldn't afford it for a few months. After replacement, I bled all 4 brakes. While test driving the brakes were working fine, I was driving about 30 mph then the "ESC Active" light came on in the message area then I lost all braking ability to the front wheels and had to stop with the emergency brake. Then it went back to working fine after the ESC message went away. I also noticed it did the same thing later on after hitting a bump in the road. I've done alot of my own mechanic work for about 12 years but I'm not too familiar with the ESC system. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Of the 5 you've listed, the only one I had was a dirty throttle body. Which, is easy to clean as long as you're careful. Sensors seem to be the thing that give these cars the most fits. Just make sure that when you change them that you're using genuine OEM parts! If you cheap out, you'll regret it...oh, and those cheapo plastic door handles breaking are a known issue.

Had to release camshaft & exhaust position sensors because they would throw a code after a heavy rain. We know how bad a design the rubber cover to the fan box.
If you don't know, you will when you find water on the passenger floor board after a good rain.
Don't run fan before relaxing that cheap rubber seal ($20 ebay) or your likely to bow the fan motor.

Love my 06 hhr lt at 264k miles. New thing im running into is exhaust fumes/odor coming from the engine into the cab. Any idea what that could be and what to replace? Most notable with heat on, and popped the panel on the passenger side and that's where the fumes/odor is the most. I'm thinking with the cowl seal needing replaced, and cabin filter, that hopefully fixes it.
Sorry in advance for any wrong terminology.

  • @robertballard8833
    @robertballard8833 Рік тому +1

Biggest problem wasnt even mentioned! Sub standard rubber parts - bushings, bumpers, etc . Most HHRs develop horrible front end clunks, thuds, bumps and clanks because steering and suspensions are worn out completely at 100K miles! never seen one that wasnt. Costs around 1500 to 2500 to install new parts with good bushings. .Timing chains can last 200K , but they usually rattle at cold start up before they go, so pay attention. Timing chain, water pump, and gears replaced around 122 to 1600 in my area. The mototrs can be good to 300K, so its probably worth maintenance. They are good cars for the 3000- 5000 most run. Buy 06 to 08 - avoid VVT if possible
