      If you look, you can usually always find an old, well-maintained Honda or Toyota that can be picked up for $1000 - $1500 and will be more reliable, and cheaper and easier to maintain, than any GM you can finance

      My mother got one as a rental after someone hit her New Beetle in a parking lot (if that gives you an idea of her tolerance for rear blind spots). JP3 Doesn't matter. The SSR needs to be looked at through the lens of the place that it was sold, the USA and Canada. If you take the car out of its context, it is meaningless. If it were sold in Australia, where Utes are commonplace, it would be awful, but in the USA with a completely different context, it is something other than awful.

      Except you can open the trunk with a dead battery. This guy obviously didn't read the manual. From the manual: 1. Remove the trim plug, located on the inside of the liftgate near the center. 2. Locate the release
      lever on the latch. 3. Insert a tool into the access hole 4. The liftgate will unlatch when the lever is pushed rearward. Push the liftgate to open. 5. Reinstall the trim plug. It takes about 30 seconds to do this. I know I've done it before.

  • @nbookie
    @nbookie 6 років тому +45

    We had the 2.2 5 speed manual version (see profile pic, and video) and put almost 100k on it with a trailer in tow almost constantly (it had no tow rating for the manual versions). Fold the seats and it was like having a smaller mini van (mini, mini van?). This thing could move 1000 pounds and park anywhere. Get 27mpg and bark the tires in second. The SS didn't come out until after we moved to wyoming and needed something to clear the snow. I still look for one today since we are back in houston. For a compact vehicle it did it's job well.

    • @nbookie
      @nbookie 5 років тому +4

      @John Drohan we lived 4 miles down a private road with no maintenance for years. It took a lifted truck to get in. Add to that over 100 inches of snow (always in blizzard form) and this things had no chance in Wyoming or Montana. I took it to ohio for a winter and it was ok on city streets in the snow but not in the big horn mountains.

      @cronoesify 4 роки тому +2

      @@espneindanke9172 I got a late model HHR way back when I first started my post college career back in 2011. We got it super cheap (less than 10K) with only about 7K miles on it. Everyone made fun of it, but I found the space in the back usable enough, gas mileage fine enough, and I rarely had to service it.
      Then I moved to NYC, and just said....nah to owning any car.
      But the ugliness absolutely grew on me, and eventually I found it very appealing.

    • @espneindanke9172
      @espneindanke9172 4 роки тому

      @cronoesify
      Mine is one of the first models and - believe it or not - I bought it, because it's very unique here in germany.
      Only 2000 cars were sold between 2007-2011 and most are "done" by now.
      So it's very rare and doesn't lose much value.
      I spent 8000$ with about 45k miles on it. But even the shabbieest HHR will stay over 5000$, as long it is road legal.
      People are turning heads, when I pass by ... unfortunatly mostly older man and less younger women^^
      Worst thing, that happened to me was, that a girl on the gas station called it a PT-Cruiser (these were sold very often in germany).
      BTW: The water in the cabin came through the windshields seal and was fixed for less than one Dollar :)

    my dad has had a 2006 hhr since it was new. it's nothing special, it just gets it done. no fancy bells and whistles, just turn the key, put it in gear, turn on the ac, and go to work. that's all it was meant to do. I have somehow fallen in love with the damned thing. we race cars and this thing is our tool box pretty much. we lay the back seats down and can carry just about anything you want to. we've went through at least six inside door handles because they're made more flimsy than a lays potato chip, but everything else has been normal. couldn't complain about this thing if I wanted to. good job Chevy, you've made a good one.

  • @TodayWithDustin

    I had one and it was the best vehicle Chevy has offered IMO. This was very practical for moving households, it was a wonderful traveling car, and I believe it was safe. Now I am aware a lot of people didn't like these cars but I LOVED mine! There was only regular maintenance for mine. I even bought mine used 07 LT and it was great. I actually couldn't of asked for a better first car. So then a while ago I bought a PT...I liked the PT a lot, but don't get me wrong I didn't love it like I loved my HHR. Nothing could ever be loved like the HHR by me. I wish they would come out with something similar.

      You haven't driven enough Chevy's if you think this is the best. I like these vehicles, don't get me wrong, but there are better GM products being made that a little more thought was put into. Like the Trailblazer with it's fantastic engine choices (even the base 4.2L was way more powerful than it's rivals base engine) and the full size trucks are normally a solid choice for a truck with the best engine options in it's segment (based on durability, cost and how much power they can make per dollar).

      @@The_Fat_Turtle - Most people aren't doing anything crazy with their vehicle. They just need it to drive acceptably. They aren't hauling anything. They aren't driving aggressively. People comparing the HHR to Camaros and Trailblazers are not taking into account purpose. He refers to comparable use vehicles.
      My HHR has gotten 37mpg, is a panel, is great for advertising and holding my tools.
      I love my mother in law's Envoy (GMC trailblazer) very nice to drive, but it gets as bad of mpg as my suburban with much less space and power.
      I love my Camaro, but it also serves a totally different purpose.
      My HHR is the best vehicle I could find for it's purpose.

    I like the hhr, it is a has class of its own, it is different from the rest, it is unique, it has its own style, when you park in a parking lot it stands out from the rest, no guessing if it's your car, or have that embarrasing moment walking up to the wrong car , most cars look alike most with the same slope back that you can't tell the differnce from a kia, hyidai, ford, honda, and others. Yea, it's not the best car but it's not the worst, it rides nice a smooth and with the 190,000 miles on my hhr it still rides smooth and also shifts smoothly. I own a 2007 Chevy hhr with over 300k miles, it treats me very well despite its massive amount of flaws but I’ve discovered that I cannot allow anyone else to drive it besides me because every time someone drives it it ends up stuck in a parking lot somewhere with a dead battery because the key wouldn’t come out of the ignition, which in turn leaves me digging whatever is in the back of the car out through the backdoor and left on the ground so I can rip out the two plastic covers that cover the battery. Now there is a positive hookup and negative in the engine bay that I believe was put there when they installed the fake shiny silver plastic trim because it looks pretty but honestly it does nothing but cause me pain

    I had a 2007 Monte SS and I HATED how everything was all electric... no manual way to open the trunk, or even to unlock the doors. Yes, it had a keyhole on the doors, but there was still a delay from when you turned the key until it unlocked. That is why when I replaced it, I wanted something as "stupid" as possible, where the computer did much less... 2015 Dodge Dart with manual transmission, simplest radio/cd player, but the damn car still doesn't have a manual way to get into the trunk! Why is it so hard for auto makers to put a key hole on the trunks and passenger door? Does it really cut the cost of the vehicle that much to leave them off?

    Interesting analysis. If I may chime in....The PT Cruiser was designed by Bryan Nesbitt who was hired away by GM and asked to design a competing vehicle. Hoping to capture the momentum of the retro craze while getting a foothold in the emerging econo-"box" (Cube, Element, xb, etc) market, Nesbitt hoped lightning would strike twice. I suppose it's debatable whether or not it was a success. GM, in their typical fashion, may have tarnished their own sales figures by not including this as a Cobalt-variant in sales the same way Toyota included the Matrix as a Corolla-variant.
    My wife and I have owned 2 HHRs, the first being a 2006. We bought our 2011 after the first met an untimely end when an Altima pulled out in front of my wife in 2015. The PT Cruiser and the HHR were designed, in part, by the same person, Bryan Nesbitt.

    My grandma had one until someone merged into her and totaled it.
    My dad bought it, rebuilt it, lowered it and daily drove it for 14 years.
    Today he bought a used vw golf, passing the HHR onto me.
    I grew up in this car and I’m glad to continue its legacy for hundreds of thousands of miles to come.

    I really liked mine. An 2006 lt. Very few problems after 150+ miles.

    This video perfectly describes the experiences I had and how I felt towards my 2008 HHR, I thought I would keep it forever but I ended up quickly forgetting it when I got my 2012 Honda Fit..

      Funny my last car was a 2013 fit and I feel my HHR is a huge upgrade.

    Drove one of these as a rental, had to remove the chrome bezel from the shifter since it reflected mid-day sun directly into my eyes. It was surprisingly easy to do.. just grip, push, unclip then toss into the glovebox. Didn't even retrieve it when I turned it in.
