      If I was needing a place to stay for over a week but less than a couple months, it would be perfect. I could cook for myself and clean my laundry but no extra services. Would a tourist want an extended stay in that area?

    These are legitimately my favorite videos because it feels more realistic than big travel blogs. Like this is clearly a real place that real people stay at. In fact, it's almost like getting a digital postcard from a friend who wants to share their travels with someone who couldn't come along. Which is wonderful :)

    I think the whole hotel setup is amazing! So carefully thought out with enough shared spaces to compensate for the basic rooms. Clean, bright and inviting. It really makes you think about the amount of wasted space we have in North American housing. It would probably be too confining for some people (and, as you pointed out, there's a potential for head injuries!🤣) but it shows what can be done with small spaces if care is taken in the design and planning. Thank you for the tour. I enjoyed it immensely!. Also, thanks for not blowing off the roof in that wind! I know you want to fly, but that is definitely not the way!😂

    • @michaelcherry8952
      @michaelcherry8952 6 місяців тому

      @phillydisco Sadly, I think you are probably right. This is not to say that in Japan you find people who do not take care of their surroundings (that happens everywhere) and in this particular case, it's a hotel so people that come here have self-imposed behaviours that are culturally expected of "guests". In North America, there is a sense of entitlement that, in extreme cases, leads to the kind of hotel horror stories you hear about. That being said, I think the model of space utilization would be appropriate for low-income housing, so long as the residents feel that they have a stake in keeping the place in good nick.

    • @jnharton
      @jnharton 4 місяці тому

      It may be "wasted space", but we aren't short on space. And I don't think anyone would willing do without a private bathroom at home.
      If Americans were a little more comfortable with shared facilities, hotels could definitely serve more people, though.

    I remember the hermit in the mountains - one of my favorites! It was so obvious the amount of work you put into that one. I recall you were corresponding with the only person who could get you to the elderly gentleman. Not just anyone could go there and you could not get there by car. I can see why the process was long, but your hard work paid off! That video touched me and still affects me to this day. I hope you are someday able to do a follow-up on him.
    As for smaller but still interesting content, it's just great to see an upload from TokyoLens!

    Compared to the spaces we usually see you in... you could've told us this room was Tokyo Dome and it'd be believable, it's practically massive compared to most of them. You can full arm spread multiple times over in multiple directions in that room unlike many of the others where you'd be lucky to get elbow room in at least one dimension.

    I don't think you have to worry about the hammock chair. The hooks that hold them up are usually rated for ~350-400lbs (158-181kg). Not to say that you shouldn't take care when getting in them (you don't wanna flop onto it like a beat-up couch in a frat house), just that it's not dangerous to sit in.

    Thank you so much for your videos. Such positive energy and commitment. I also really really liked the videos about the tiniest shop; it was like cult to watch the purchase of the shop, wow. You set a high standard for video blogs and especially the topics. 👌🏻

    Kagoshima is one of my favorites. But it's so far away. :) Last year when I visited I went directly from PDX -> SEA -> HND -> KOJ. I took a cab to the APA hotel in Kirishima and I had no idea I'd see so many Joyfulls (I'd only been to one by my aunt's house in Yamaguchi Prefecture). Turns out Joyfull is mostly a Kyushu family restaurant.
    Oh, and I met a very nice obaachan who told me about moving to Kagoshima with her husband after he retired and staying there and how much she liked it (even though her daughter made her give up her car). She warned me about the infrequent trains (everyone else has a car) and told me it was a beautiful place to retire. I meet the nicest people in the middle of nowhere and it's on my (mostly fantasy) list of places I want to move to.
    The APA Hotel in Kirishima had excellent breakfast but I was just there on my way to Ibusuki (gotta get buried in hot sand once in my life). I guess the only thing I'd say about the area is don't run through Kagoshima station thinking your Suica is good for the whole trip. Once you get out of the city going south, it's not useful. However, contactless VISA works. In any case, I had a few long conversations back at Kagoshima station having the stationmaster get me out of the hole I'd dug for myself. Perfect place for that, by the way. Not too busy and the stationmaster is very helpful.
