The 2022 Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS Is Fast Access To Sun And Fun

- Опубліковано 27 лип 2024
- The Porsche 911 is available in coupe, cabriolet and Targa models. But the GTS version of the 992 has been missing in action. That wrong will be righted in early 2022 when the GTS returns to slot in perfectly between the Carrera S and Turbo S. A bit of a bargain (for a Porsche) it's available in all three body styles with Porsche's 8-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission or 7-speed manual. All but the Targa 4 can be had with rear and all-wheel drive. Can't decide which one to buy? Collect them all! Tom Voelk travels to Porsche's North American headquarters in Atlanta, GA to drive the Targa 4.

Your infectious enthusiasm for this car is a joy to witness
Why are these videos so good? I think it's because I feel like I am Tom's buddy coming along for a ride and a review before we have a burger somewhere. No cutesy lingo, no spewing firehose of facts, and no pretense. Just a fun review. Thanks.
Targa has been the only car poster I have in my life, one day, just one day, I will get one GTS 4 Targa in my garage. Great review Tom as always.
It is a gorgeous car.
This is true. Looking at vehicles clinically, I always find a few lines that make me wonder if the designers had to compromise for some reason. Here? Nope.
Targa is the chicest variant for me in the 911 lineup Top-notch review, mate
Funny, I just saw the Smoking Tire's review on my coffee break. I love it when respected reviewers shout each other out. Great vid, as always.
Tom, you are living the dream.
I kinda prefer the silver bar to the new black one.
Your ability to include the perfect sound bites of a press launch are commendable. Your attention to detail doesn't go unnoticed even on a press launch. Great work again, Tom.
Very enjoyable review. I agree that $200K is an insane price to pay for a car, even one as great as the 911 GTS Targa. The way I got my GTS was to go with a CPO. Last year I bought a 2017 Carrera 4 GTS with less than 6,000 miles on it and in like-new condition. Essentially a garage queen. It had seven months left on the original warranty plus a two-year CPO warranty that kicked in once the original warranty expired. Got the car for $110K. That is still a crazy amount of money for a car, but a great price for what was a virtually brand new Carrera 4 GTS. Every single minute spent in the car is pure unadulterated joy.
good choice
I have a 991.2 Targa GTS 7 speed manual. It’s my rain Porsche. Probably the best all around car I’ve owned. It does everything well.
What's your dry weather Porsche?
That navy blue blazer line - that´s where you got me. No lifestyle babbling, no skinny jeans and 2000+ sneakers, just a navy blue blazer mentioned. Magnificent. Bow to your Sensei.
Awesome car by the way. No heavy hold pomade required.
A targa is a car for them drivers with an attitude, a cabrio for the happy-go-lucky dudes and dudettes.
Technical specifications are negligible, both rule in their own right.
You decide.
Another outstanding review of an outstanding vehicle thanks Tom.
I enjoyed this review, I’m now subscribed.
You always look happy BUT even more so when driving a Porsche. And especially a classic like this one. What a collectible.
Great video and I enjoyed this fun fact section; thanks Tom! I think I'd have to get the Targa (after I figure of how).
Beautifully done review
Tom, you are the Porsche of car reviewers.
Beautiful car. Nice scenery. Helen is my favorite vacation spot.
We bought a 992 Carrera in ‘22 and will be selling it this Spring when we take delivery in Germany of our ‘23 Targa 4 GTS. We started out with a 944, 918 Boxster, and Macan. The Carrera is a beast, and this will be a great throw back to our drop top days, but with all the things we’ve come to like about the 911 series. Spot on about fit and finish.
Anyone else audibly gasp when he said $200k? I would’ve thought $130k!
A good review for sure, GTS is the sweet spot!
Tom is just as good on a review of a bargain crossover as he is on the most discerning German roadsters. He is just the best. I wish he would review my 840i cabriolet.
Hello Tom… Greetings From Atlanta!
Always enjoy your great videos.
Can you tell me what was the route you drove to find those great curvy roads leading to Helen?
Thank You So Much!
I'm not a convertible guy, but the 911 Targas I think actually look better than the regular 911 (sacrilege probably) and if by some miracle I was in a position to buy one that's probably what I'd go for. The opening/closing theater is something else
Now I just need these to depreciate to the point I can afford one. And there are some AWESOME roads around Helena! We used to do an annual Victory bike event there.
Good luck getting one anytime this year!
There’s something so cool about the Targa
Great auto, excellent specs.
While 5 Miata RF’s for the price of this Porsche would be fun, I feel like the Porsche is more fun.
Depends on the situation, I have a 992 S Coupe and a ND Miata and in most normal situations I’d say it’s more fun based on the fact of its significantly lighter weight and ability to push it much harder because of its shorter gearing and drastically less power
Wow! I’ve wondered about AWD on the Targa for years. Thanks so much for the trivia.
It's who I am, it's what I do.
I have also, or primarily, heard chassis dynamics helping to make up for the higher center of gravity and extra weight up top and back, more assured handling.
For around $200k it’s perfectly reasonable to gripe about plastic door handles
Best plastic.......better than RR shit
Why would you want to get out?
You rock in that Targa Tom
My favorite sport car of all time.
I'm perfectly happy with a base 911 in the same special order Chalk paint. As a matter of fact, I have it as a screen saver on this laptop, waiting for the day when I have enough pennies to buy this thing.
Yea any other variant is just not worth the money , only one I would shell out the cash for is the turbo but other than that na
At the hotel where I was staying across from Porsche HQ, I ran into a guy with his father that was taking delivery at the Porsche Experience. The last time I saw that kind of excitement, my small kids were waking up on Christmas morning. Pretty sure he told me it was a base Carrera. Black on black.
@@DrivenCarReviews I completely forgot about the taking delivery/Porsche experience thing. I'll add that to the list of options, along with the sport exhaust with black tips. Thanks Tom!
great video
love your good vibes
5:11 does it come with a periscope so you can see oncoming traffic in a pretty long bend?
I just ordered the cabriolet in Chalk, and it’s supposed to deliver March/April timeframe. I can’t wait! 😎
I love my '16 911 GTS Coupe!
This seems like the ultimate car for this channel! When I see Toms classic throwback style I picture the 911 targa as the accompanying car.
amazing car!
Great car, great video. I don’t expect to have have the budget for this, but if I did, I’d probably just stick with the cab, for RWD and not b-pillar wind noise.
Beautiful car
currently own a 991.2 Carrera ... it's a great car; could only imagine how 992's are
My dream car!
Great video and review Tom! Just drove the 992 cab back to back with the 991.2 Targa 4 GTS to help decide whether to go cab or Targa. I was surprised at the reduced amount of wind noise in the cabin in the Targa compared to the cab at both 40-50 mph and at highway cruising speeds. Next up on the decision list is manual vs PDK. Some reviewers comment on the lack of low end torque (below 3k rpm) on the manual. Have you noticed this in the 7 speed manuals in the 992? I have not had the chance to drive one with a manual yet.
I've found more wind noise in the Targa, coming off the B pillar. I don't recall being disappointed in the torque driving the manual, it could simply be how well the PDK is tuned to the engine. That transmission is a marvel. That from a guy that likes manuals.
I would have liked to hear what it sounds like inside with the windows down as well. If you did this off camera can you provide some feedback? Thanks for a great review!
Great review as always, Tom! My father had an '86 Targa in 1987, until he purchased his '96 Cabriolet new, which "we" still own. I learned to drive stick on both and his '69 Beetle.
I really like the continuous taillight on these models
I am envious! The 911 Targa is my favorite Porsche. It is an incredible machine! Glad you got to drive a 911 GTS.
Note to self: buy a lottery ticket tomorrow 😁
In my opinion this is the perfect 911 ever made…. Such gorgeous….
But there are virtually NO new porsches in dealerships throughout the U.S. market and that circumstance is NOT expected to change until 2023 at the earliest.
Keep the windows down and add a simple Blackmail (Or Other) Anti-Wind Buffeting pc right behind the rear view mirrors. They work great. Enjoy the ride
It’s unfortunate that they blacked out the b pillars on the gts targa. Can it be optioned to get it in silver like the rest of the trims?
The perfect car for Bobby Axlerod to give to his housekeeper for a Christmas tip. I want one; can I have one?
I love those cars.
Get the cabrio! The top goes down, the weight goes down, and the fun only stops when the monthly payment clears... :-)
and what's the reason you can take the top off only if the car is not in motion?
and why the cabriolet can activate the top when moving?
Fascinating review-love this car.
RE: Your intro music. I'm thinking Wild Cherry playing that Funky Music. Don't deny it ;-)
Wild Cherry has a lot more funk in it. I stand by that statement. Also, James Velvet could be a great lead singer's name.
I've been to Helen, GA. It's a quaint little German community. Similar to Leavenworth, WA.
If you want to visit the ultimate German town, visit Frankenmuth, MI (just north of Flint). There's also the ultimate all year round Christmas 🎄 store called Bronner's Christmas Wonderland.
I was going to mention Leavenworth but figured it was lost on most folk.
Targa is the most gorgeous!
yeah the GTS is my dream car, perhaps the targa, but I may prefer the coupe look
This is the Perfect Porsche in my opinion. Just hate the markup the dealers put out in the market to get into one.
Everyday all year round is right. Thank you
Targa is for sure a pdk car. It's a big fat luxo car. Looks great.
Buy both.
No evil twin or TP test? Joking aside, awesome car but new or used very aspirational. Is there a sensor that prevent the Targa roof mechanism from working when close to a wall?
The Targa looks so sexy! Excellent review. Your enthousiasm is inspiring!
I'm not really a sports car fan. I'm more into sportsback/ hatchback Grande Coupe/ GTI type stuff but man, this car is gorgeous! Someone in my complex has this gen 911. It looks really good in person. Even your great video quality doesn't do this car justice. This targa looks sweet!
Amazing car. Nearly perfect spec, at that price I’d opt for the full leather interior as opposed to Alcantara. Well done Tom. 🍸
Exactly, I don’t understand the Alcantara craze. Vastly prefer leather
@@alh06 I like the grip of the suede in hard covering.
@@DrivenCarReviews yes, but having to keep it clean????? Hard pass....
I think Porsche should also make Targa versions of 911 GT3 Touring and Turbo S.
Definitely a great car and a great car video!
Red light: hmmm 🤔🤷♂️
Always the sign of a great car. 😁
I'd stick with the Manual for control as I drive than just ride..
Driving a 473 HP 911 Porshe is a dream come true for anyone four wheels passionate. I could notice your hesitation for red lights. You're forgiven. Congrats! By the way, did you get paid for it? 😉
I would like to see a manually operated targa top like the 80's and see what the difference in price would be or enjoyment factor and weight savings.
Knowing Porsche pricing it would probably cost more as a 'light weight' option
I had an 80s targa - storage of the top would be an issue if it were removable.
Yeah, wish they made the targa manually operated so that it wouldn't be this heavier compared to coupe. That huge part that lifts at the back is also begging for a failure
“ mounted in the rear”
Me- immature snicker
Tom, in no way is this car worth $200k grand. Porsche must be able to get it, or it would be priced more appropriately. Car prices these days are insane.
Why yes, it can get get those prices. Chances are demand will exceed supply.
They absolutely get it, and they will sell every single one of them that they build. Porsche can seemingly do no wrong today.
@@DrivenCarReviews I've owned 3 Porsche's, two were brand new in '03 and '06 then a used '07 later years. These were all Boxster models, but they were great cars. I simply am amazed at the wealth out there today for such vehicles and the willingness to spend this kind of money on a car. Currently I'm driving a Mercedes S550 that I paid $19k for. Can not beat the luxury for the price. Keep up the great reviews, I always sub and watch them. Even if the car isn't worth the money....to me. lol
Worth I’d highly subjective and i agree with you as an ND owner. But as you go up the income bracket price sensitivity Becomes less important in exchange for performance luxury and exclusivity
I'd get a turbo/S for that much.
So a wind-blocker had to be added because saintly Porsche got it wrong first time around as the cabin was blustery. Something that humble Mazda with the Miata got right FIRST time. But as a badge snob it always has to be Porsche eh?
Is that the JF from Fast Car Daily?
My favorite version of 911. Has been forever. That being said, I enjoy the last generation with the glass top oh so much more. It’s just so classy and beautiful.
I have a friend with one of those. I know what you mean.
Was there any wind chuff on the targa with the top down? The ND2 RF had wind chuff not as bad as the Supra but still annoying.
Not really and I forgot to but the wind blocker up. FYI, I was doing between 50-65 MPH while talking to camera. Very little EQ. Roll the window down though and there's some road off the B pillar.
For 195k I'd rather have a base Turbo, Turbo S or GT3!!!
But then you have to spec it.
My ‘22 Targa GTS is on the boat and will be here in a couple of weeks. Let me know if you’d like to do a 2nd take review.
Good luck gettin' one...there aren't any AND if you do find a GTS...check dealer mark up...
That Targa 4 GTS sure is nice. Too bad reporters don't talk about Porsche and truth. You may know Porsche as part of VW group has lied about emissions and fuel mileage for the past 17 years. . As a result, that company has been ordered to pay their customers millions. The U.S. dragged them kicking and screaming into honesty court. Some company, eh?
Covered it. A crime against humanity. That was seven years and billions of dollars in fines ago. I have moved on.
Mid Engine Caymen or Boxster is a better Car. 242 laps on the Ring. No problems.
Not as good as before around 2000-2005 but best 911 this generation.
Targa hold their resale values better than all other 911 variants other than the GT models.
A coop is something you keep chickens in, just saying.
Perfect Car is absolutely right. The classic Carrera shape is always a treat among car design and it's innovative engineering is second to none. Gun metal grey, Matted black or classic white is color that brings out it's personality. Good presentation 😎👍
Silver and red I feel portray the Porsche identity
@@alh06 Agreed! 😎👍
Would much rather have a GT3 touring instead of this.. that is if I can get a freakin’ allocation for one.
I thought they got rid of that electric shaver🪒shifter I guess that’s only in the gt3 touring?🤯🔫🚙
The front wheelhouse looks quite "empty"
GRANDE PORSCHE 👍 🇮🇹 👍 🔝🔝🔝
Is it " Ice Grey Metalic " ??
I don't know. Had it for four hours and had other things on my mind.
Ok, Thank you for answer me, and I have one more question.
If your age is 28~35,, you can chose the car. ' Lamborghini Urus VS RangeRover AutobioGraphy P530 ' Which one will you chose ?
It has the face of a Volkswagon.
I'll take the Corvette Z06.
Can't believe this is $200k lmao
GTS Targa don't has the helper springs... sounds more like paid advertising!
